My HTC Magician freezes when cold - JAM, MDA Compact, S100 General

I have a SPV M500 for a while, and now, when it coulder outside the phone simply locks afther a while. The green led keeps blinking but a can't receive calls, if a reminder is set, it dousent react, and the only solution to revive the phone is a fost reset (or to remove the battery cover a few time). Does anyone experience this problem? Is it normal that a 15-18 C temperature to freeze these phone model? Does anyone knows a solution? I have the last BigStore ROMs installed, could it be a software prob?

That behaviour may happen in subzero, but it should never happen within the 10 degree range! Batteries tend to be the component most sensitive to the cold, so I suggest trying another battery. Or for now, try conditioning the battery to increase the chemical activity in it - this may help its resistance to the cold, in addition to possibly extending its battery life. Conditioning the battery is basically letting the battery drop to near zero with intense usage (like looping a video or heavy gaming) before charging it, charging it to full and letting it drop to zero again through intense usage - this cycle may have to repeated 2 to 3 times to get results.

WOW it must be cold where you are.

HI,
I use my XDA to do count stock in frigdes that are 0 to -16 degrees and i have had no problems?
Maybe its because im only in the fridge for a few minutes. But i count everyday and i have no problems.
I'm pointing to a software prob too. I have those 'it wont turn back on' things (hot or cold) happen and the only way to fix it is with a soft reset.
Maybe cleaning the contacts of the battery would help.

I really dont think to be a software problem, cause it's happening evena after a couple of hard resets, and with the latest original rom for the model. I tryed even to empty and recharce a couple of times the internal battery, thinking that im might need "formating" due to usure. Ive bought an extra battery of 1300mAh, but all is the same. I-ve installed a prog callet Batti, that shows the battery pover and alo the temperature of the external battery, but it shows a 2.5-2.8 C INDOORE, IN MY HAND, where it sould be around 25-28 C.
I observed that the phoone freezes when the batti shows 2.1-2.2 C (i think 21-22 C). Can someone try this program (it's free) to see what temperature its showing?
Tx

Can someone please use a temperature reading software, to see at what temperature works usualy the phone. I'm using Batti, that shows 2.4-2.6 C when it should show 24-26C. Tx.

Question: Has ANYONE figured out a...

...definitive solution to the overheating (and subsequent crap battery life) issue with the Tytn/Hermes/8525?
This seems to be one of the most prevalent hardware-related problems I've encountered after perusal of numerous boards.
Charging, it heats up. Duh. Fine. Disconnect, put it in my breast pocket after it cools down, twiddle my thumbs. During this whole time, for purposes of this test, EVERYTHING is switched off: phone radio, wifi, bt, push, and as many of the background processes as I can kill without having the phone hang on me.
You'd think the symptoms would be the same every time. But nooooo...this thing has a mind of its own. Sometimes it'll be 5 mins before I start feeling the heat, sometimes 40. It's totally unpredictable. I've tried every way I can find to extend the battery life with no luck; this is getting retarded.
So: Battery life drops drastically once the thing starts heating up. But not before. From 3PM to 4PM today, battery life was at 100% and did not move. Sweeeet! I thought...too soon. Got that warm and fuzzy feeling - then it's in free fall. 10% down in 45mins, another 20% by 5:30, dead as a doornail by 8PM. That's exactly FIVE hours of "standby" with ZERO activity. Screen was turned on maybe 4 times just to check battery status. 200 hours of standby?? Sure, in a deep freezer packed with dry ice...
Installed Batti: if anyone with close to normal (advertised?) battery life has also installed it, could you tell me what your temperatures are like? When I'm charging, I'm at 35.6C. My voltage is at 4.213V - this might be the problem since the battery is listed as a 3.7V 1500mAH. Also, I removed the charger for about 30 seconds after Batti said it was charged, then reinserted it. It took about 30 minutes to tell me again that it was full - all the while listing the "Percent" as 100%. Gah!
Anyway - back to the reason I've posted:
1) Is this a phone issue, tweak/registry/software issue, or a good old fashioned battery issue? I've got another battery coming in shortly but it's nothing special, not sure of the brand, just want to compare it to this one - which is a Seidio.
2) If anyone else has had this problem and solved it, please let me know what you did.
3) This phone is for sale if anyone wants it and knows how to fix it. Other than the 5 hours of battery life, the phone is perfect.
Thanks all!
The only time I've ever had this problem was when I installed the very first Palringo mobile beta, and it continuously polled the Palringo servers whenever it was connected... I had a battery life of about an hour and a half!
I can only suggest you have some poorly-written app on your device which is polling some piece of hardware or using (or trying to use!) the data connection, subsequently failing and looping round to try again and again.
I'm not using Batti (using the BatteryStatus Today Screen plugin), but it shows temps - I'm charging my device at the moment and it shows ~41 degrees celcius. When I unplug the charger, I have about 70mW usage and when I tap to turn the backlight back on it roughly doubles (backlight on its lowest setting). Using roughly 40-45mA just idling, I have push mail turned on and ActiveSync is syncing probably every 5/10 minutes or so (can't remember the interval).
I get about a day's worth of usage including regular phone usage, data usage, then locking the device (including turning the backlight off) when it's just on the desk or in my pocket (less if I have BT turned on all the time, obviously). All I can think of is that you have some app on there which is either interacting with something else or causing the problem itself.
@slidizzy:
what is the manufacturer name on the battery?
There are threads around about certain manufacturer brands (there are a couple of different brands) and their performance..
i had a dynatec and it was crappy.. took it back and got a sanyo battery and all was good...
Possible solution - Same geographic location
Hi. I seemed to have the same problem recently. I think my radio was the new 1.54.00.10. I have two batteries and each one was killed in 6 to 8 hours.
I first downgraded the radio to 1.51.00.10 and it seemed a little bit better, but upon upgrading to 1.54.70.00, it seemed to have gone away. My OS is Pandora's 7.1 w/ 3.62.
With 1.51.00.10, I was able to get over a day's worth of life on one charge in 3G/H mode. It seems this 1.54.70.00 is giving me more life, but I'm still testing.
Maybe give this a try, upgrading to 1.54.70.00 and a 3.62 os. No problems for me so far and it seems like it's a keeper!
Hope this helps!
Quakie
Soft reset when it starts getting warm, soft reset after charging if it is warm when on the charger.
My 8525 used to have this problem, but it went away on its own. However, soft resets when the device felt warm did solve the problem when it was occurring. Note that my phone is no longer warm while charging, either.
A lot of people try various radio upgrades/downgrades and ROM changes to fix this, but I think that's on the wrong track as I've never seen anyone report that doing these things made any difference. However, if you're not using WM6, I recommend at least making that change.
Other than that, hit the reset button if it starts to feel warm for no reason and after charging, and you should be fine.
My guess on this is that there is some kind of problem where the device thinks it is plugged in when it isn't, and then it over stresses the battery causing the heat and fast battery drain.
My experience
I am on Rogers in Canada, the same company that owns Fido, and I wonder if there is a problem with their network/ActiveSync/3G/units compatibility.
carrier: Rogers wireless (Canada)
device: branded HTC TyTN WM 5
ROM: 1.34.631.14
Radio: 1.42.00.00
Recently activated Push Email and connecting to exchange server via Activesync. Push requires an "always-on" data connection. It seemed to have been working fine for about 2 days, then suddenly my unit started to heat up significantly, (luckily no screen warp), and my battery would drain from 100% to 0% in 5 hours (if I was lucky). Unsatisifed with Rogers suggestion that replacing the unit with a refurbished unit was the way to go... I continued my research and experimentation and 48 hours later here is whatI came upwith so far:
1) Hard Reset - did not help the situation
2) Soft Reset when heating up - did not help the situation
3) Most frequently associated activity - ActiveSync on with 3G Data Connecton enabled and server directed to exchange server... no difference depending on how often I had the mobile device ping the exchange server. The heat and battery drain occurred while the TyTN was in hibernation (dead unit in the AM when I awoke).
4) Battery drain modifiers - worsens with worsening heat, worsens and acclerates if you remain in an area of low signal (less than 2 bars showing)
Best solution(s)/explanation(s) to date:
1) 3G is a battery killer - it uses a lower intenisty signal, and it generally draws heavier on the battery and hardware when using the network
2) In Phone settings, switching your Band to GSM (2G) fixes the device into one band (does not allow automatic switching and constant detection of best signal). Unless you are a real Power User and rely heavily on every ounce of speed that can be squeezed out of 3G there is no noticeable difference.
3) I have switched off the "receive allincoming beams" for the Ir interface to conserve every mV of power in my battery.
4) Since the switch (a few hours now) I have had no heat issues and the voltage has remained stable with ActiveSync on and mild websurfing to download a couple of CABs... granted it is minimal usage as it is 2:30AM but I think this may be the trick (on Rogers with a TyTN anyways)
I'll keep an eye on this and do some more analysis on the battery... Any input readily welcomed...
M
sounds like you simply need to buy a new battery.
It's not a tumoh!
Doesn't seem to be battery...
I recently tweaked reg with some battery hacks, locked it into 2G and all has been well. Holding a charge with the data connection engaged 24/7 - drops to about 65% charge over 24h, having to charge only every 2nd/3rd day...

Recalibrate WM6 For Mugen 3000 mA Battery

I have recently purchased a Mugen 3000 mA battery. I am thrilled with the extended battery life after fully charging and discharging it three times as recommended by the manufacturer. What I find annoying is that WM6 no longer gives accurate information regarding remaining battery strength. If I run the battery down to 2%, remove the battery and restart WM6 says 37%. At 2% I can repeat and WM6 still says 37%. After running down to 2% a third time and repeating WM6 says around 10%. After that it varies a bit but you get the picture.
What I would like to know is if one of you geniuses out there has discovered a registry edit, hack or 3rd party software that will provide accurate battery info so I don't have to be distracted by having my battery say 2% for hours on end or repeatedly remove and restart.
BTW, BatteryStatus Ver. 1.04.200 beta2 build 0173 reports the same incorrect info and so does SPB Mobile Shell 1.5 Home Tab.
Thanks in advance for your informed guidance. OK, that is laying it on a bit thick but I always highly recommend this site to anyone I know interested in really learning how to take full advantage of that little computer in their pocket.
Take a search on XDA for Ariel monitor maybe it solves your problem.
Thanks for the suggestion. It is a nice little program but it suffers from the same problem. I suspect I need to find a way to change the mA capacity WM6 bases it's battery calculations. I don't know if that can be done with a registry edit or if there is a third party battery monitor that has an option to change the battery capacity for calculation of percentage remaining or better yet auto detects the actual battery capacity. Ideally it would be able to both accurately read remaining percentage and make reasonably accurate time remaining estimates based on current and historical battery drain data.
It is like driving a car with a broken gas gage. Sure, you can use the odometer to estimate how much gas you have left but you are always worried your estimate is off and you will be left stranded without a phone ... oops crossed metaphors.
How do the rest of the users with extended batteries handle this irritating situation?
Bump. I can't believe i'm the only one with this problem.
I know this problem also i will wait with buying a high capacy battery until i find such a hack
The Kaiser uses a smartbattery. The battery capacity is based on the information that a small processor inside the battery tells the phone's main processor. There are several things that could be the problem:
1. The small processor in the 3rd party battery is programmed with the old specs for the standard battery. The is nothing you could do about this.
2. The small processor needs to be calibrated. You would do this as follows; set your phone to never turn off no matter how low the battery got. Now, run the phone down until the thing dies from lack of power. Then charge it all the way up. This should fix that issue. I don't recomend doing it many times, because it is not good for Lion batteries to be fully discharged too often.
This is a very valid issue which I have faced many times when using a 3rd party extended battery with other phones.
Not sure how to solve it though, although I have the 3000mah on order myself.
I think the battery reading is given by the battery itself, and most of these 3rd party manufacturers don't really care to put a smart processor in the battery (to reduce costs/make it smaller/etc).
I have the exact same issue and although it is a nuisance, I have found a workaround to keep using the phone. Simply physically removing the battery and replacing it will increase your remaining battery power substantially. I normally wait till the first low battery reminder to do this. Also, how do I set the phone to never turn off no matter how low the battery gets? This would also be fine with me.

I didn't run into this issue until I reflashed my ROM to one with W6.1. Then, rather than get 12-13 hrs with my 3amp battery, I'd get 6. I used my original battery, but when I put the 3amp back in, I still had 47% left.
It's the ROM, and until there's a fix, it would be a pain to pull and replace the battery just to work around. I've done this several times recently when I'm on battery power, but I'd rather not.
Anybody heard of any other fixes, outside monitor, or do we wait until we get a Windows Mobile 6.1 fix?
Still no luck?
Hello,
Has anyone been able to find a solution for this. I am ordering the extended battery today. I will try to fully discharge it and then recharge it as was suggested and report back.
I emailed Mugen. We went back and forth with them trying to troubleshoot whether it's the battery or OS. They were clueless, but did offer an RMA to replace the battery. I pay the postage. Not sure if I'll send it back if it's the OS. I pull and replace the battery right now. It's a real pain, and I hate opening the case so much, but it's the only way I can get an accurate read.

The processor is required for these types of lithium ion batteries because it regulates the charging of the battery. If it didn't the battery would not charge properly, or maybe not even charge at all.
There is no solution for now, people from other forums tries to patch battdrvr.dll.
But two things may help a little:
1.You may completely disable battery monitoring
HKLM\Drivers\BuiltIn\Battery rename or remove string battdrvr.dll
But you lost monitoring completely.
2. change HKLM\Drivers\BuiltIn\Battery\Order change value from 15 (in my case) to 0. - After this battery lasts longer until power off.
There is not complete hardware or software solution for this problem. We need to wait.
Low Battery warning:
By default, a PPC will sound a warning sound when the battery is running low (10%, fixed value), but there's no way to disable or change the notification. To enable this, so that it is visible in the "Sounds & Notifications" control panel, set:
HKCU\ControlPanel\Notifications\{A877D663-239C-47a7-9304-0D347F580408}\Default = "Low battery warning" (REGSZ string, no quotes)
Anybody have any updates on this? I have noticed this more on WM6.1, but it was still an issue on WM6. I just find this so annoying!
Is there any radio that can fix this? I noiced that this battery reading issue only occurs when the Phone Signal is on. When off, it never happens to me. Or it seems. So it has something to do with the radio.
bump, anyone got a solution?
this is very interesting, i bought the seidio 3200 battery i am having the same problems. i just tired the
change HKLM\Drivers\BuiltIn\Battery\Order change value from 15 (in my case) to 0
i am going to see how that works out throughout the day
Tried It
I am having same issue, reset the registry key to "0" and ran for a full day, no change, still incorrect reading. I have a 2700 Mah battery and the charge indicater is completely wrong on it. I have cycled the battery as per reccoemndations, but still get wrong power remaining readings. Can remove the battery and resets itselft to a more correct reading.
I am out of ideas, guess we need someone from HTC to chime in with a hardware fix.

i have tried it too and it still does the same thing. i would still need to pull the battery and restart the device for the batt meter to get a more accurate reading. i could do it about 3 times before the battery dies completely.
is there this problem with all extended batteries or just with the larger ones?
the reason I ask is that I've got a $17 credit at Amazon and was thinking of grabbing a 1600mah battery, it's only like $22 with ship so I'll only pay a few bucks for it really...
I wanted to get the larger one but it's fat and won't fit standard carrying case, but the 1600 is slim and will fit in place a regular battery

Battery emptied during the night??

Last night before I was going to bed I have had my xperia fully charged.
When I woke up this morning the battery was almost empty.
I can't understand how that happened :S I had no programs running except maybe g-alarm.
Anyone who has an idea what could've drained my battery?
No reception or low signal from ur fone provider maybe? it consumes a lot of power getting the signal. Or your wifi is turn on.
Happened to me several times.
But I'm not sure I didn't let something run in the background. Mediaplayer for example .. skype can eat battery in minutes too.
Also I don't know what battery level I had at the evening. It was above 50%, but then with Xperia, the indicated level does not correspond to remaining time well. It drops fast after 50%.
I would love if I could close any application with red phone button. Anybody knows about software which can do it ?

are you using fish panel?fish panel caused battery drain in my experience.also bluetooth and wifi as well.
do you use AEButton plus or S2U2 (more to the point AEButton here) as AEButton especially seems to have drainage issues if its 2.6.5, at least it seemed to for me and some others...

None of these. And Fish panel for example cannot be left running in the background (AFAIK). Media player, or skype easily, since they are even intended to be run in background.
Happens mee also sometimes. Weekend I noticed that after useing opera it does it. I chargered my xperia in friday, didnt use it then whole day, or in saturday, but in saturday night I wanted to check news whit opera, battery was 90% when I start, after use its was 80%. I go to sleep and morning I waked up to that xperia says battery critical. It cant be anything else when I didint use nothing else whole day, and when it was allredy stand one day whit only 10% loss, and now randomly use 60% battery at night.
I think I had S2U2 running in the background, could that be it?
I'll soft reboot before going to bed tonight and see what happens ^^
use fdcsoft task manager, it'll tell you what's running
battery won't run down on its own, it needs something to cause it.
as said lowsignal will do itn
do you really need to leave the x1 on overnight?
if you turn it off it'll be all nice and alert after a nice sleep
only time my x1 runs low is if I fall asleep reading something with mobipocket on autoscroll...
I found that when I was running Push E-Mail over iMAP, I had this battery draining issue. Make sure you're configuring FlexMail or any other IMAP IDLE client to only the essential folders that you want to keep 'live', as each IMAP IDLE folder requires its own connection and can eat up a lot of resources/battery.
I've actually wrote myself a MortScript that will monitor the battery status and allow FlexMail to stay open if the battery is over 80%, and it will close FlexMail if the battery falls below 80%.
Still hating the fact that we only get battery readouts in 10% increments. Total crap for a high profile device...
I don't need to know what is running. I want to be sure I've just closed something. In fact I need to close 99% of application, I only need IM+ in background and that only sometimes. Also sometimes I need to adjust some settings without closing current application. But otherwise I always want to close, not minimize, and I want to do it with a key.
Same issue here , will a lil bit more tricky , i had my phone TURNED OFF , and was CHARGING , woke up and the red little light on the power button ( light of death) was on, replaced my batter with my spare one , and the phone came back to life , yet it isn't charging ( the charging icon is there but still not charging) , I'm using the wall charger ( if any one is thinking of an usb issue) . So for now i'm useing an "external battery base charger" which sucks to be honest ( takeing the battery in and out isn't the best thing ever ) ..
The funny part is that SOMETIMES ( 1 out of 100 ) the phone charges, why !! i don't really know . I reflashed my device , hardreset and done anything someone can possibly do yet no solution , it's not on warranty and to be honest i think that it's more of a software issue (i know that not charging while switched off is against this ) , I'll be so greatful if any of you guys have any ideas
I had the same problem, but for me it happend when I got a text message at night the the screen wouldn't turn off but xperia tweak fixed that
I had one instance of mysterious night-time draining. It actually woke me up at 4am with the low battery alarm.
The only thing I think might have caused it is that I had it sitting next to my old Nokia, which was switched off. I figure its antenna must have been interacting with the X1's such that it had to go to full power just to keep the cell signal.
Hello all,
I don't have this issue now but i've noticed something weird last night.
All background applications was turned off, screen backlight was turned off, LEDs on both sides was turned off... But there was white light inside my phone. I was sleepy so i didn't check keyboard backlight. Propably it was it. It was visible only it dark, in correct angle.
I've turned device off and on again and there was no light any more.
I had tried this issue before, it fixed after I uninstall the SKtools
I uninstalled S2U2 and I think it made the job
Li-ion or Li-poly?
i've been searching forums here and there regarding x1's battery issue and i'm not using any of those suspected programs (AEplus, S2U2, batti, etc.). mine is just stock xperia as of now, except for SPB plus. but still my battery only manages 14 hours of juice with very minimal usage i assure you. i have tried charging while off, hard reset, upgrade to R2A UK generic ROM, but still my battery sucks. i also noticed on the Settings>Power box that my "Main battery" is Li-ion, isn't it supposed to be Li-poly as the one written on the battery itself (BST-41)? Also, how much drain do we expect from a weak carrier signal? thanks guys.

I also had a problem with the battery not lasting me through the night. I eventually found out it was S2U2. I upgraded to v1.45 (with the power-saving option) and now the battery remains at the same level during the night.

You said it yourself.
I've been experiencing this for many days. I would charge my unit overnight only to be awaken by the low battery signal. In a normal scenario my X1 would only loose only 0-10% over a period of 8 hours in standby. When the fast discharge occurred it would drop to 50-60% and the unit was warm in touch.
I checked repeatedly to find which program was to blame, soft reset the device various times and changed my usage patterns to rule out programs that didn't had to do with it.
In the end I discovered that every time G-Alarm was triggered or set up an Alarm the quick discharge effect and warm device appeared.
I got rid of it and haven't encountered the problem again.

Non-linear battery usage (@99% for 8 hours)

I have a non-urgent but pretty weird and annoying problem with my battery status. After charging (usually overnight), it sticks at 99-100% for most of the day if I barely use it. Once it gets below that, it steadily depletes faster and the last 10% is gone within an hour. The battery life itself is fine, for which I'm grateful! If I barely use my phone it will last four days or so and easily last a single day under heavy use. Strangely, if I reboot my phone, which I do maybe once a week, it suddenly ducks down to a more realistic number; say 50% before rebooting and suddenly it's down to 30% after.
Is there any way to fix the meter to indicate the true state? I can imagine there should be some way to calibrate it or I could even calibrate it manually if that's possible, setting the current 90% to 50% and 50% to 30% or so.
It might be relevant to know that I'm using Dutty's 4.3 Final WM6.1 ROM. Does anyone have experience with this or have ideas to point me in the right direction?
I am
I am using duty holy grail 2.1 win 6.5 with modified icons cab and i find that if it seems to be on a certain percentage for awhile i just soft reset the phone and it will drop 5 or 6 percent and start displaying properly.
My battery is similar although not as extreme. The first half of indicated charge lasts far longer than the last half. Also if i reset my phone the indicated charge will drop by around 20%.
It has done this since i've had it on standard Orange Rom.

I have the same problem!!!!!
Other thing I realized is the radio of my phone is always communication, i know that because if Iput my phone near a sound box (like my sux sound box pc) the box make a noise every 4 seconds, stop 10 sec and starts again...
Some one else saw it happen too?
Same battery probem...
Hi at all.
I have the same problem, the phone stay with aproximatly full percentage for 6-7 hours, but after these hours at hevery call the battery go down fast...
And, during the last 30% of the battery percentage the countdown is very fast....
can be possibile only 2 or 3 short calls, at maximal.
Problem of windows mobile software, or htc hardware...?
The battery meter inside windows have the same problem.
Best regards.
Luigi P.
Same issue here.
I believe everyone has it, but as battery life is generally really ok nobody complains.
Same problem here.
When a Battest runs in the background, then is the indicator at 80-100mA but sometimes it goes up to 280 for 20-30 seconds.
I donĀ“t know if there a program which need the battery power or the indicator shows not correct.
I have this Problem since i updated the Radio Rom from 1.12.25.16 to 1.13.25.24.
When i backup the 1.12.25.16 the error is the same.

Kaiser's battery drain so fast after dropped

After being dropped while charging, the battery of my Kaiser just use almost a day (previously from 2 to 3 days).
I installed acbPowerMeter to measure power consumption and it shows an unbelievable value: 4294967mA
When plugged into the charger, the power consumption back to normal (I think), between 90-275mA. I wonder if Kaiser power circuit is broken or not.
Who have experience please give me an advice. Thanks!
Hi, if you've dropped your device you should check the connections to the batery. Try pulling out the batery, check if the "pins" are aligned, check if you batery isn't cracked.
Other thing that might have happened is that if you install new software it may drain you batery, i had the same problem after flashing and was only solved after getting a fix from the chef.
Thank you for reply me!
I checked the battery connectors and tried different battery (borrowed from my friend), so the result is still the same. I did not install any software before and then.
Hello, I have same issue with battery drain. I don;t know if it was droped because I just bought it used and battery is draining in one day. I tried another tool called Mobadi, and it saying that my Kaiser using 90-200mA. how about you?
90 -200mA is normal draw. Your battery is losing capacity over years of use, thats normal.

...normal draw during screen on and active use...
with these older devices, there are too many tiny things that can go wrong which cause weirdness.
1. Testing with a known good battery (NEW does not equal 'known to be good'-- I had two new batteries which would not even take a charge, followed by a new NON OEM battery with a low capacity cell inside! they use some undersized cells probably for pricing reasons... sort of like sticking an AA battery in a C cell shell. Not really sure what you can do in that case...)
2. Hard reset and see if the problem persists before doing any more troubleshooting.
