Can I access pocket internet explorer on the go? - Networking

If I'm in a 3g area can I use the PIE (pocket interntet explorer) on the go? I don't fully understand how the net works on these 3g phones lol. Any help is greatly appreciated.

if the settings are set up
then you can use IE the same way as when
on grps, wifi, usb, bluetooth.......

Basically, Pocket IE (or Opera Mobile, or whatever browser you have on your device) is a dumb client - it can only tell if it has a 'route to host', that is, if it can connect to the URL you input or not. If it can't, the software (OS) takes over and attempts to establish a route to the Internet one way or another, so the browser can resolve the URL (address) and serve up the content for your request.
So, in essense, it's actually the netwokring layer of the OS which does all the clever stuff. Internet Explorer will just use the Internet whichever way it's given to it, so long as it gets it in a way it can understand. And bingo, this is where the long-established, universal standard TCP/IP protocol comes in.

Wifi Hotspots requiring temp user log in

Hello All,
I apologize if this has already been discussed. If it has, could you direct me to the thread?
We have a WIFI hotspot at my work. But, it requires the user to open the internet and either create a new user or log in with an existing one, which I have. I use it with my laptop fine.
But I want to use the standard IExplorer on my wm5 8125 (wizard) and auto login and not log out until I kill the connection. Is there a setting in the phone or software that allows for this? I know that there are a couple of different internet explorers like opera etc that allow for multi tabbing but I don't want to deviate from the standard IE.
Please let me know if or how this is possible.
Thanks,
CG

HTC WM6 as member of Windows LAN workgroup via WIFI

I have a new AT&T Tilt and I've just installed a WIFI access point on my home/office LAN. My WIFI laptop was simple to configure as member of the Windows WORKGROUP. I've been struggling with my TILT. Some questions:
1) Is this supposed to work?
2) How do you assign the TILT to a workgroup?
3) I can see other workgroup PCs from the TILT, but I cannot see the TILT from other PCs. I am able to ping the TILT from a PC both by ip address and by device name (which happens to be "tilt").
Thanks for any help,
From what I understand you want to be able to browse phone files over wifi?
Yes. On any LAN PC, I would like to click on "My Network Places" and see the WM6-Phone listed with the other WORKGROUP computers. Then I would like to be to click on it to browse its directorys. And also drag & drop files to/from the phone. Thanks.

Not sure that's going to work unless you can find some other way of connecting other than by using Activesync
I understand the "Not sure that's going to work..." part. I don't follow the "unless you can find some other way...". I'm not using Activesync (at the moment) I wish to use a WIFI Access Point to join a LAN WorkGroup. I call that "some other way". It would seem that this desire would be widely shared by the wider community of users. It's a logical thing to want to do. There are enough parameters to tweek that given the proper expertise, I would guess that you could connect anything to anything else. I just don't have the expertise so I thought I would pose the question...
As far as i know, windows mobile doesn't include a smb (file) server. You have only a client. This means that you can browse your desktops' shares from the phone but not the contrary.
Windows CE 5.0 and 6.0 actually have a smb server but i think this is not shipped with the Mobile variant.
Unless you find some 3rd party software of course (i don't know of any but i've never really looked for it).
Bye
EDIT: if you want to be able to share files in the PPC with the desktops in the network, you can install a FTP server in your PPC. Then you can use a ftp client on the desktop to browse the PPC.
Try this one: http://www.mochasoft.dk/freeware/ftpd.htm
Nice solution. Thank you.
Seeing LAN shares with Tilt
I have the same goal (to share both ways between Tilt and LAN), but some additional issues.Have had the Tilt for only one day, so forgive me for any dumb questions!.
Can't even see the LAN shares from the tilt (nor the other way around). The phone indicates it is connected to our WiFI, and other LAN PCs can see another's share \\Titan for eg., but when I type //Titan into the Tilt browser it says it can't connect to that. Any suggestions why?
I wondered if its a syntax problem. Seems the Tilt does not have a reverse slash (\), but I would think forward slash (/) should work equally well.
In some circumstances, the phone invites logging into a VPN, but we dont have one established on our LAN. Would this facilitate sharing files? Does setting one up require running a server or is a simple Peer to Peer network sufficient? If so, how do you set one up?
Once I am sure I hve a Wifi connection I will try the ftp client solution.
Any suggestions welcomed.
Thanks

Getting internet programs to connect without IE

My Schools network uses clean access agent, which checks to make sure your windows device has the correct authentication. It will not let me go on ie, as it sees that I do not have the correct Virus protection etc. However it lets you use Opera, as it just lets it bypass the checks because none are in place for it.
I can use Opera or Skyfire, that isn't a prob. But when I try to use a program that connects to the Internet such AIM or QuickGPS, It won't work. Im assuming that the program is using IE to access the data. Although I have no idea how a program connects to the Internet (Does it use a browser?) Anyway, is there a way I can change the settings to get the program to use Opera?
Thanks,
I'm not sure that it will work, but you could try changing your default browser.
There are many threads in the forum with this information, Here's one, do a search for others.
hey, if you talk to your university's computer support team, they may tweak their internet settings so mobile browsing can work. i go to western connectisut state university, and i e-mailed the computer center with this problem (i dormed on campus and the ResiNET they used blocked me as well b/c i didnt install clean access agent. the university's network read my device as if it was a desktop since they blocked me saying i needed to install that ****ty software). once i did that, they e-mailed me back saying they updated their systems so i was able to use the web-based login, and then i began surfing the net. once u logged in, you should be able to update the GPS & use AIM with no real problems.
i hope this helps! there isn't a real way to bypass the system. believe me, i tried searching for ways to bypass the system. changing your default browser won't remedy it b/c the network only reads IP addresses and the fact information (doesn't matter what it is) is being pass through its network, it will block it without proper ID keys from the web-based log in. i even tried searching for a mobile version of cisco clean access agent but there isnt such software. like i said, talk to your university computing center and they can help you. it is really up to them to be able to change the settings around.

Wifi send recieve files

Does anyone knows can i send and recieve files over wifi like the iphone. My phone is a htc prophet.

if you can find a program which does it and is available for both iphones and wm then yes
otherwise you can use dropbox or livedrive or gmail and using the internet as middle station
so does anyone knows where to find such a program.
Google it and you will gett the path

I think you can...
Lets assume, PPC1 has been configured with WiFi Remote Access.
Create an ad-hoc Open WiFi network from PPC2.
Connect PPC1 to this network.
Turn on WiFi Remote Access.
The PPC1 behaves as a server.
Open a Browser on PPC2.
Try opening the server address (as displayed on WiFi Remote Access Interface on PPC1. This is device specific).
A page should open.
Perform the password authentication on both devices, as will be prompted.
Try downloading the file from yor PPC1, the way you download usually through your browser on PPC2.
Its technically possible.
I don't have two PPCs with me to try this.
But, technically speaking, it should run flawless.
But, again you need lots of RAM on both the devices, specially on PPC2.
But, you must have a bit experience to use it properly.
And, only using it can help you know it!!!
Isn't that?
So please Use it, then reply back.
And, if this works, it can be used as a two-way protocol also.
Best of Luck guys.
today i tried it and it works perfect i transfer files much more faster than with bluetooth thanks for your help

Explorer tries to connect to the device on port 80. If there is no service running you can't connect I wonder what page is viewed connecting to localhost when running wm5
I'am developing a mobile application based on OpenMobileIS open source framwork, this techno use the internet explorer web browser for application interface : webserver includes in the framework. So for that I have to access my application throught the localhost on internet explorer or another mobile web browser.
im having a similar problem on a wm6.5 device.
I want to dynamically forward ports back to my device from a remote ssh server, and im having problems...
I think its to do with wm6.5 not having a concept of a localhost...
localhost 127.0.0.1 connect
hi,
im trying to get a webserver running on my WindowsPhone!!!
i wanna exchange data with my home server later if WLAN access exist.
i used WindowsPocketPC 2003 and all worked well... now i have 6.5 and nothing works...
ok i have find out:
You need to change the registry because there is no hosts File like WindowsXP has. Or you can use a tool for this "Pockethosts"!
(or try 127.0.0.1:80/index.php - 80 is port of your server and give full name of file)
and you need to have Internet access. (I tested it with WLAN internet over my Router)
---------
but im still dont get it to work without internet access
can some one help with this?
(Internet access to connect localhost LoL)

I know it's been a year but I had previously tested on a device with Windows Mobile 6.1 and worked locally without connection, but now I have a just got a Handheld Device with 6.5 and if there is not a connection. The local web server is not accesible and says: Cannot Connect: Cannot connect with current connection settings. To change your connection settings, tap Settings.
I am using PocketHPH (Web server and simplified PHP engine with SQLite)
There is no place like 127.0.0.1 (home sweet home) !!
What happens if you install the Network Folder plug-in and NbstatCE ?
Nbtstat for the Pocket PC. Written in Embedded Visual C++. All versions of Windows CE have a file explorer which can not view windows shares easily. Nbtstat allows the user to view netbios shares on all IP addresses in a subnet.
http://sourceforge.net/projects/nbtstatce/
Though I'm not running WM 6.5.x I'm curious if these both links help you out...
and
Did you forward a port on your router? Thus trying http://127.0.0.1 : portNumber (no spaces here, I typed it this way otherwise appears)
..
There are 65,536 ports which can be used, though every port below the 56,000 is for the industry; thus use a port above 56,000
The web server was on default port 9000, then changed it to port 80. Like I mentioned before, works fine if there IS a WiFi Connection, but once it is lost I can't connect to the local web server.
Don't worry try one of this browser skyfire or uzardwebp and let me know

Can't download Skyfire, cause it's not available in my area. Tried uzardwebp, but just won't connect to anything. Installed Opera 10 Mini and similar results with IE. If there is a Wifi Connection present the internal web server works great. Once there is no WiFi connection I get Network Problem message in opera.
