Greets.
I read some threads here, and I saw some critical flaws with Universal, namelly the usb port falling off and the battery getting messed up after 6-7 months. There is also that swivel mechanism, that does not seem to last very long.
So, do you think it's safe to buy a second hand Universal?
Thanks.
I had never been a fan of buying second hand electronic devices. I prefer them brand new and with warranty. Just like you stated, you can never be sure, unless you are buying the device from someone you know who takes really good care of their devices, just like I am. Do you know I had never dropped nor scratched any of my PDAs? How's that for being OCD? lol Plus, I always buy the screen protector first before the PDA, because none of my PDAs has been screen tapped without the screen protector ON. Is that too much information? lol
i think they're just isolated incidents/accidents
Although lots of problems, like what you read, but I really enjoy every moment of using this device.
Just buy a new one, or maybe now this device is "too old" (more than 1 year product) in the market, why not wait for newer ones which are coming soon beginning of next year.
I normally will not buy a new "OLD" product. Buy it when a product is just launch, that is where the kick when you enjoy all the problems. LOL.
I'd say only get it if you can buy it for REALLY cheap. The swivel mecnhanism REALLY sucks - it's really inferior to that of, say, my Sharp Zaurus SL-C760 (which is, BTW, 2 years older than the Universal... The HTC engineers should take design lessons from Sharp.).
Any complain about have one, you only have to get the latest AKU 3.2 ROM because the original one really sucks!
I'm preety happy with little notebook style PDA.
long time lurker on these boards
have used my x7501 as my primary cell for almost 2 yrs.
loved it and still do
but the new hd2 caught me...i have retired the old gentleman to his box....lol
I really like the hd2 much more practical for everyday use
another reason i switched...wm 6.5 was going to be the limit..i think the 1000ghz cpu requirement was gonna be the stopper on 7

I'm in the same boat as you. Just got an HD2 to take the place as my x7501. Much more 'phone-like' but with almost as big of screen. I'd still love to get linux ported to my athena, but I don't think it will happen... not enough people still interested in the athena, unfortunately.
If anyone is interested in buying my athena, let me know.
Strange, I am starting to carry around both the HD2 and the Advantage - they have different purposes. I still prefer to do longer emails on the Advantage, and the bigger screen is kinder on my ageing eyes for surfing and viewing documents. I think they both have a role. In fact, I am rather turning against the HD2, and starting to use the HD and even the Kaiser again - just so much more pocketable, and if you have the Advantage in the grab bag, you don't need the HD2.
Every time I get the Advantage out, people immediately start asking about it - I don't know why the concept didn't catch on more widely.

i totally understand where u r coming from...especially about the reactions when i pull out the "nasa satellite command module" as my coworkers call my athena lol
but im ready for something easier to carry...and im always afarid im gonna break the athena

I'm located near Chicago, IL. I'm not certain I want to sell my athena... I'd actually like to keep it, but I could really use the money as I've been recently unemployed. So, if you want to make me an offer, I will definitely consider it.
My X7501 is in close to perfect condition... always kept a screen protector on it, kept it in the case. The keyboard has a few light scratches from connecting it to the main unit... nothing serious. I also have a nice car-mount that attaches to the lighter hole in the car and the 4-in-1 adapter that has the USB-host, VGA-out, SVideo-out, & video-out. Also original box (rip on outside of box), and the included leather case(but one of the plastic pieces that grip the unit broke off... it's still usable, though.) I should also still have anything else that came with it originally (Software CD, Manual, etc).
Anyone interested can PM me an offer.

I agree. People are always asking me about it in public, and many of my coworkers want one (but won't pay the price). Even when I pull it out in cell phone stores all the employees come over to look at it. Hard to impress cell phone store employees with a cell phone.
The HD2 will probably be my next phone, too, but I'm waiting for AT&T subsidizing this time. Hard to leave the 5" screen, so I'm not in any hurry.
I am an extremely indecisive person and am having a hard time pulling the trigger on a tablet purchase before August. I am leaning towards ordering a Nexus 7, but just keep wondering if that is the best tablet for me. I am a college student that is looking for something lightweight and portable to take to class that will allow me to take notes easily and browse the internet when I am bored.
I can't decide between the Nexus 7, waiting to see what the Fire 2 has in store, the Galaxy Tab 2, a refurb Asus Transformer, HTC Flyer, refurb Xoom or pretty much any other tablet that has decent specs and a price tag around $250.
Somebody help me, please. Any input is greatly appreciated.
Go with what you do best - don't decide now.
Wait until some of your classmates bring one in, and try it out.
Electronic gadgets never have to be bought - today.
I would like to add on to this question as I am also a college student on the fence about buying the Nexus 7.
Are there any really good note taking apps for Android? Like anything similar to OneNote on Windows?
Also are there any stylus like accessories for the Nexus 7?
Same answer - the Nexus 7 is not being sold as a note taking device.
If I were you, I would wait for a fellow student to bring one in and try it for notes.
It might be great, or it might just be too small.
Stylus support is something else you would have to just try. The Nexus 7 is not made for stylus input, but that is not to say there might be a third party solution.
Taking notes on the onscreen keyboard may be - challenging.
Voice dictation seems to work great - but your fellow students might object.

Correct me if I am wrong there is an Android version of OneNote available. There's also EverNote which is a decent note taking application.
I'm not really planning on using the onscreen keyboard, I would mainly be hand writing my notes (since most of my classes deal with drawing diagrams and using formulas and stuff) but thanks for the info guys, I probably do just need to do a lot more research before I make a decision.
Well I planned on using a tablet keyboard with any tablet that I purchased - I just can't decide which tablet to purchase.
Does anyone know that if I purchased the Samsung Tab 2, how long (guesstimate) it would be before a jelly bean update was released for it?
If you plan on taking notes with a pen line stylus you will definitely need to wait for 3rd party android development. Just the mere act that the screen register your palm when you rest your hand on it to draw with a stylus is a bad sign. All these android tablets are really design for entertainment. For a $250 choice is very limited. The only alternative I see is the Microsoft surface, but that's going to cost you $500.
The quote (maybe second hand) that I had seen from Asus was that they did not intend to offer a keyboard dock, because the 7" form factor was too small.
Tread with care when you explore new uses for what admittedly is a very versatile tablet. Might work great - might not.
I did see that Asus was not coming out with a keyboard dock for the Nexus 7, but I planned on using some brand of bluetooth keyboard with it or any other brand of tablet that I ended up with.
Has anyone used (or is planning on getting) a tiny bluetooth keyboard?
As an example of what I'm talking about, here is one, with case, for the Galaxy SIII:
http://www.chinavasion.com/china/wh...ies/Bluetooth_Keyboard_For_Samsung_Galaxy_S3/
Since the days of the original Sidekick, I've almost always had a physical qwerty keyboard (SK, CSK, SK2, SK3, SKLX, G1, CLIQ, SK4G, G2...)
I got the N1 when it first came out and spent a year keyboard-less, then went back to the land of touch typing bliss with a used G2. I've ordered the N4, and I'm sure I'll love the new soft keyboard, but sometimes I want the option of typing under the table with a physical keyboard, which I've never been able to do with soft keyboards.
I've found some nice, well-reviewed, Android-compatible bluetooth keyboards but I don't think it's going to be worth doing unless I can find a case that fits the phone and keyboard together. I tweeted @chinavasion to ask if they would create a keyboard+case combo for the N4, like their S3 one, and will report back if/when I get an answer.

They sell the just keyboard for $12:
http://www.chinavasion.com/china/wh...board_for_Android_iPhone_iPad_iPad_2_PS3_More
And cellphoneshop.net has the same keyboard on sale for $17 for the next two hours and doesn't seem to charge shipping.
I wonder if the S3 case would work as is, actually....
It's not like I'd leave it in the case when taking pictures. There's the rear speaker to consider, though, I suppose.
I've never actually been that fond of tiny physical keyboards, but if I were going to do that on these phones, I'd hold out for something like this:

I ordered a slide-out keyboard for the S3 and it works! See my thread here.
This is what I've been preaching for years now. We aren't getting any quality sliders anymore. The best we got is the Droid 4 on Verizon (Hell No to Verizon), some motorola phone on Sprint, or the Relay on T-Mobile. The largest we get is a 4.3 inch screen or a 4 incher on the other phones.
Honestly, this is crap. The solution to ALL of these problems is just to have the manufactures make good quality hardware keyboard cases in conjunction with their devices. I would pay $100 bucks for a high quality 5 row keyboard case for the Nexus 4.
It would be nice, yes. A good quality bluetooth keyboard and interchangeable "trays" to fit different models of phone would be worth much to me, and I'd continue to buy new trays for new devices as they came out. Someone should do a Kickstarter...
That's because not a lot of people want a tiny keyboard for their smartphone. It's gonna be so awkward to pull out your smartphone and then whip out a keyboard to type if you're taking a break at a coffee shop.

Have you read the thread to date? My keyboard is build into the case; it slide right out like my old HTC G2.
Apparently the hardware manufacturers agree that there is an insufficient market for sliders to justify continuing to produce them, but even that shrinking market could support an add-on keyboard that snaps onto the phone, I bet.

Definitely would like to get one for my girlfriend. She's having trouble typing with her nails
Any news on the bluetooth keybarod slide in case for nexus 4? I know there are some for schmangschmung S4 so this might be deal breaker for me in buying a new phone. im so tired of touch-typing... even if i love the swipe it cant beat physical keys, especially if you have a bit of hand sweat or cold fingers.
EDIT: DIY case

Im so excited now!
First and foremost: No multiple user support! Until this is provided by either Samsung or by a mod, I'm not buying this tablet. I was hoping to make this a coffee table appliance, and there is no way to achieve that without the multi-user support.
Another thing that kinda annoyed me was the seemingly cheap workmanship on the area where the bezel meets the plastic frame in the front. I held a white one at Best Buy and this annoying look immediately caught my attention. This would have looked much nicer if the bezel did not run over the frame and was instead flush with it. Normally I wouldn't care about this too much, but I know my wife will and ***** about how iPad looks nicer... jeez.....
So why am I posting this? I guess I needed to vent... I had so much high hopes for this device, and now I'm having second thoughts...

Well, you cared enough to reply, so that's something!
I think the Note 2014 is going to be the best there is for android 10 inch tablet (until next year) for what it all offers. The super close runner up will be the New Nexus 10 coming out soon. For many it could go either way between the two. I jsut love all the software extras and the multi tasking of this thing. My god the multitasking!!:victory:
Again the new Nexus 10 is not out yet but ASUS is making it and I'm not too confident in the quality control. But that is just me.

And besides, didn't Google announce that they won't provide external sd-card slots, because they were "too confusing" to the consumer??? Really??? Or is it because they want to charge an extra $100 for 16GB in this day and age? Thanks Google, that's a deal breaker. The moment HTC did that, I switched over to Samsung (also HTC stopped making the battery removable). I hate when Android device makers are trying to act like they are Apple. If I want to buy something like iPhone or iPad, I will buy an iPhone or iPad. So stop taking away things that give you an edge!
I'm afraid that's what Samsung could be trying to do here by removing the multi-user support. They want everyone to buy a tablet. They don't want family members to share. Well, for the phones, it's understandable. But for tablets, there is no reason not to share. I hope Sammy gets its act together on this...

Google's mission was to make the tablet as affordable as possible, it is one of the reasons why they cut out the ext SD card.
Their other excuse was switching over on how they wanted their phones to mount when connected to PC. But Samsung managed to get it working right, so I don't know what their issue was.

As a coffee table device? I wouldn't dish out ~$600 for a tablet I'd be leaving on the coffee table. Why not just get something cheaper? It doesn't sound like you're going to be using the s pen for anything serious anyways and the S Pen is what really makes this device worth the purchase.

Well, I guess I tend to always buy the top tier device and hang on to it for a while (still use my Lenovo T61 I bought in 2007 close to $2K). For now it will be a coffee table device, but for later I may turn it into something more useful. And no one can deny the stunning resolution on that screen.
I currently have Note 2 as my phone and I do use the S Pen quite often.
7just grab a nook hd+. 9inches and under $125.

You could try installing 2014 NOTE 10.1 RETAIL MODE APP.
I believe the way it works is.........
You activate the retail mode with a password and anything that is done in retail mode is erased when you return to normal operation. There is also a video that plays when the tablet has not been touched for a preset time.

Yes, I have seen that on the tablet at BestBuy. There was an "administrators" menu on settings and retail mode user or something close to that name was listed as an admin. But still doesn't achieve the purpose of being able to share the device with my wife without any hassle.
