Bypass forced password for push email - Windows Mobile Development and Hacking General

Hi All,
I set my 8125 up to synch with my work exchange server in order to keep my calendar and contacts up to date.
My work server enforces a device based password now frequently when I go to access the device I have to put in a password before it unlocks and I can access it's functions.
Anyone know how to disable the password requirement?
I am not talking about removing the password to connect to the exchange server, just the enforced password to access the device itself after it has been sitting idle for an hour or so.
I figure it has probably set registry values to control the password type, size and frequency it has to be entered as well as enabling/disabling it.
Anyone have any knowledge of how this is implemented on WM5 with push email?

Bypass push email password
Perect!
Thanks

Could someone post a more direct answer to this question? I can't find anything on zenyee to address this....
Thanks!
EDIT: Never mind - I found the "Zenyee.com Stay Unlock.zip" utility here: http://mobilitytoday.com/forum/showthread.php?t=13030&page=2. (attached in case it disappears again!)

StayUnlock
More info can be found on this at
http://mobilitytoday.com/forum/showthread.php?t=13030
Zenyee StayUnlock worked fine for me until I upgraded to an 8525. Now I am not sure if it is working or not. Once it informed me that the security policy was being applied but I have not seen it since and occasionally when I turn on the phone I have to enter a password. It happens every time if I power the phone all the way off and then on again.
I just modified the lock timeout to be 24 hours so that might help.
In order to access that setting you may have to modify a registry key to make the option availabe. I had to do this on my 8125 but the 8525 already had the key set. Details of that key change are in the same thread of the link above.

Working on 8925?
Can anyone get this thing to work on an 8925?
I installed the Cab Zenyee.comStayUnlock.cab
I see StayUnlock in the Startup Items Folder.
I see Zenyee.comStayUnlock in the "Remove Programs" window.
I have checked my registry and it is already set to 1.
I still get the prompt for password every 20 minutes.
Do I need to do anything besides install this cab (since my registry is already set properly)? I keep reading that people are "modifying the lock timeout". What does that mean and how do you do it? Heck, changing this to once every 24 hrs is MUCH better than every 20 minutes.
Robert

Nevermind. I just found out where the "password settings" was. (settings > personal tab > lock). I've set that to 24 hours. We'll see if Stay Unlock keeps that from prompting me every 24 hrs.
Robert

I installed the .cab file that I found on here and I was very pleased with the results
I then cooked it into my ROM and am still pleased
One thing that was slightly nagging me however was the notification you get when the policy is reapplied. For some reason our IT dept have configured the policy to refresh every hour, which I can obviously bypass with this excellent utility. Unfortunately every hour there is a notification and a (slightly) annoying bleep as the utility kicks in. Not that noticable but still a bit annoying.
Anyway I went direct to the site (http://www.zenyee.com/) of the developer and found a newer version (2.0) that operates in silent mode by default
Excellent..... Hope our IT dept don't find out

i personally would be more concerned about IT telling HR.
As an IT Admin i can say those policies are there as much to protect corporate info as to annoy end users.

Stay Unlocked
I've been using this little app for 2 years since my Kaiser days and I love it. Now they got a new version which doesn't prompt security at all!

That's true and reasonable, but at the same time you have no chance to modify the applied settings temporarily, even when it causes more trouble than maintains security. Just an example: You use your PDA for car navigation. Chances that it will be stolen while you are driving are extremely low, but it is very dangerous to enter a PIN every 15-20 minutes during driving. For these occasional situations it is very useful to override default policy settings and set PIN activation interval to several hours instead of minutes.

Completely agree on this. I could have lived with the lock policy when the device stayed unlocked when plugged in, but keying a PIN while driving should not be done.
I had the same issue before with Blackberry Connect. Last friday I switched to ActiveSync push synchronization and stumbled into the WM lockscreen issue.
Zenyee's tool seems (just using it for some hours) to work on WM 6.5.x (23xxx build) Energy ROM.

PIN Number Screen Locking with AKU2 Exchange Server security

Hi,
I am trying out AKU2 with Push e-mail for my organisation. I want to implement a security policy that forces a PIN number and locks the screen after a period of no use. All works fine, so far so good.
However when the device is actively in use for something like tomtom GPS, even when powered externally. the screen lock cuts in requiring you to enter the PIN whilst driving, which clearly makes it unusable for GPS or really even as a carphone (although voice dialling on a bluetooth headset works even with the screen locked)
Does anyone know of a solution to prevent the lock kicking in whilst on external power?
Thanks
Richard
I have the same problem here. It makes TomTom unuseable after 30 min. Mostly I'll drive a little further than that!
Does anyone else has this problem, and hopefully an solution?
This is another aspect of the upgrade that I hate (in addition to the fact that you can't get vibrating notifications of emails while the device is in standby).
It's a problem for a lot of people....
I've updated my Universal to the AKU ROM and I'm having the same problem with TomTom, iGuidance, and OncourseNavigator (aka. Navigon). I don't know of a solution yet. I'm hoping someone will write a little application that will allow the user to specify "if program 'a' is running, prevent the screen lock. When program 'a' shuts down (i.e. exits), then re-start the timer for the screen lock").
I'd be willing to pay a lot of money for an application like that right now....
Same Problem
Same problem here in the german QTek ROM.
What about collecting a bug-list (No vibration on push email, Lock screen problem....) in the forum and sending this to QTek?

Is'nt it possible to make that same application to force a screenlock by pressing a hardkey? (on my work the phone is laying on my desk and i dont like that someone read my mail, msn or hotmail.
When there is an application which can do that, i don't have to use the automatic screenlock and there is no problem anymore when using Tom TOm

The problem with AKU2 policy is that the administrator of the exchange server decides whether you use the automatic screenlock and how long it locks after, the length of the password etc etc... The settings are greyed out after the 1st time you connect to your exchange server... so you no longer have a choice on the automatic screenlock...

So watch out trying to connect to your companies server with your mobile device. I think a hardreset is the only way to get rid of this annoying pin.

Setting up Gmail

Well, I've got Gmail set up with the messaging application on my Wizard running WM5. But this does not offer any option to setup peaktimes and offpeak times for the "Send and Receive" function. Only option is to set the interval in minutes.
Any solution.
I basically do not want to "Send/Receive" at nights and on Sunday....
Thanks in advance.

I know I have seen programs that do this, but for the life of me, I cannot find them. I wonder if they have all gone away, for some reason...
AHA!
Persistence pays off, at last. I have found this: http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/ppc-download-bandswitch-v1-2-3.html
It functions like MoDaCo's (may require free registration to download files) NoData application (which I was prepared to offer you as a stop-gap measure) except for one HUGE difference, it has a sleep timer like you wanted...
You'll have to guinea pig yourself, I don't have time to put the app through its paces.
Sorry, link was dead, but I tracked down the cab file.
D/L directly: www.commmgrpro.com
Use at your own risk. I just discovered it has a 15 day trial period, and the guy wants 10 Euro for the license. Seems kind of steep to me.
As a last resort, use NoData to disable everything before bedtime, and just switch everything back on when you get up. If I find something else, I'll post it here.
After some quick fooling around with my 8125 during lunch, I discovered that I can disable all network access (not just the phone) simply by putting my phone in airplane mode. Seems to block programs that automatically log on when functioning, too.
Give it a try.

Thanks for your replies... disabling network access is not really the solution I'm looking for. What I'm trying to do is reduce data traffic on the network (very expensive in India). Currently I've set up Gmail to be synched every hour instead of 15 minutes that I'd like to do. I hardly receive important email on Saturdays and Sundays. So I basically wanted to skip that.
Anyways, now I'm just switching off Auto synching on fridays and bringing it back on on Mondays... ;-)

Checking mail in standby doesn't work

As the topic title suggests, I'm having problems checking mail with poutlook while in standby.
The "Check every..." option doesn't work, and when I hit "Send/Receive" and then press Power to enter Standby mode it stays in the same state when I power on the device later.
Does anyone else encounter this? On which ROM version/build?
I'm using ROM version 1.14.401.3 build 22273 WWE.

Hi,
I've got the same problem. My X1 is configured to fetch mail through the data-connection (which remains open while in standby). But the mail is fetched only when I get the phone out of standby.
My version is the dutch unbranded version. Rom version: 1.02.937.3

Hi,
I have the same issue with my recently purchased Raphael.
No email pop when the device is in standby mode.
My former phone (Hermes, WM6.0) had a totally different behaviour, retrieving emails at the configured interval, either through cellulafr or WiFi connection. It seemed that the scheduler was able to wake up the device, open the connection as appropriate, and pop the mail server. Then notification was issued as a sound alarm, LED blinking and/or screen pop-up.
Is the new behaviuor linked to WM6.1 or to a manufacturer specific setting?
Please can someone help to sort this out ?!?
HTC Touch Pro T7272 (Raphael)
ROM 1.90.406.5 FRE
Radio 1.02.25.19
I haven't been able to solve this issue. I doubt it's a WM6.1 bug because I haven't encountered it on my previous devices with the same operating system. So the firmware has something to do with it apparently.
I installed one of the push mail programs called Seven (www.seven.com), and checking mail in background works just fine for me now, but this is not a fix for the native client bug of course.
I accidentally deleted poutlook file. Can someone please upload it so I don't have to resort to hard resetting the phone? I have a lot installed on it.
Please.
Thanks.
same problem
I cannot get the mail client to check for mail every 30 minutes when it is in standby.
Anybody?
Same for me. Discovered this problem in the last few days after setting up my Yahoo account to collect every 15 mins. It seems to do it as soon as I wake the device.
Also tried setting up Peak and Off Peak times and the schedule box is greyed out.
I set up a fake exchange server to highlight it but Im not sure if the settings are universal or just for the fake server?
@vangrieg
Which seven product was it please?
How does this Seven work?
Surely there's a way to make it sync while in standby? It's almost like you can't receive a text or a phone call until you wake your device??!?!?!

It works fine in standby. I'm not sure what you mean when asking how it works. It's a push mail service which uses their server as a proxy of sorts, which checks your mail on POP, IMAP, Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail, and even Outlook Web Access accounts. Whenever there's new mail, it's pushed to your device. So you don't check mail from your device actually, it's done by the server, your phone just downloads mails when they arrive.
From the UI perspective, you are just using your stock WM Outlook.
Text messages seem fine, but I've noticed the same with emails - nothing happens til the device wakes.
This is a bit of a deal breaker really - MS couldn't put this in to force people to use Exchange or something daft like that, could they?
I had the same issue on my diamond and You have to use one of the following programms called "Kaiser Tweak or Schaps_AdvancedConfigTool". There are two points, where you can set the "Suspend Timeout from AC resuming and Battery resuming". I have set the values from 1 second to 75 seconds
I dont quite understand how or why it should make a difference but I seem to have inadvertantly fixed this issue with my phone. Im on O2 and couldnt get my MMS to work despite having the correct settings. Eventually on the O2 active connection, I changed the WAP protocol from WAP2.0 to WAP1.2 and my MMS worked. Since then though so has my email! Previously it would only work when the phone was fully awake or when i sent/received, now there are messages waiting when I switch the phone on!
Gav
Ive had this since my Wizard. I assumed it was for a reason. If you dont touch your phone for 8 hours, but it is still connecting and retrieving mail every 10 minutes it is a waste of battery power. You won't see the mail till you bring it out of standby whether it has retrieved them or not.
Schoolydoo, Mine checks every couple of hours and when i use my phone they are there ready to read which im happy with as it irritated me having to send and receive manually. Just posted what Ive found to possibley help others. Ive not had chance to set up a push mail system but as Ive got several different accounts Im happy with how mine is now working. It just seems odd that the protocol thing should effect the auto retrieval.

Hey, could you describe exactly how you did this please? I can't find the setting for this anywhere
In messages select the left hand 'all messages' tab, then right hand 'menu' select mms options, then the 'servers' tab. My phone then shows the only connection as 'o2 active MMS', select it and it opens a screen where you can edit the settings, the bottom option is WAP Version, select 1.2 and its done.
Like I said, stil dont know why it works but deffinately does! Let me know how you get on.

Phone lock on hd2

Hello!
I have a problem with my hd 2.
Somehow I activated the phone lock, i'm not sure how it happened, as I know where the setting is and I don't recall activating it.
The problem is that I can't figure out how to deactivate it again (the check box "Prompt if phone unused for" is grayed out, can't uncheck it)
I can change the settings, like, how much time before it locks up or what password I want to use, but no disable.
I really don't want this phone lock to be activated so if anyone could tell me what to do to deactivate it i'd be most grateful!
Tried to search the forums for it but couldn't find anything.
Thanks!
try clearing the password fields, and changing the time to 0 minutes, and then see if it'll let you untick the box.
You can disable auto lock with BsB Tweaks. That's probably the easiest method.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=589305
MidnightDraven: thanks, I tried that but it won't let me clear the password field, just keeps saying that it's not allowed to keep it blank, even if I set the time to 0.....
johncmolyneux: I'll give it a go
Thanks both of you for replying

I tried out this application, and disabled the "auto lock" function, but I still get prompted when I reboot my phone, that I have to type in the phone lock code ?
Seems to have worked other than that....any other ideas as to how I can get rid of it completely ?
I don't know what to say mate. I just set mine to lock and require a pin, but it let me untick the "prompt if unused" checkbox and blanked out the password for me when I did it. It's now back to the way it was.
Have you installed any software recently?

It's possible. Try raising the issue in the thread you got the ROM from. I'm sure someone else would have seen the issue if it is caused by that ROM.

Figured out why it got activated!
When I setup the exchange connection for my workplace must be some sort of security policy, that forces you to activate the phone lock if you want to sync the emails, can't find away around it, but at least the mystery is solved

Hi,
I Have the same issue with exchange.
But there is no other option to disable it? some reg modification?
Hi all,
I've just got my HD2 and it's the first Windows Mobile device I've synced with my exchange server. Had the same thing and it really bugged me but I found a work around. If you're an Exchange admin (or you're in good with those who are), Google search for Exchange-2003-Mobile-Messaging-Part2-Uncovering-Device-Security-Policies - use the first link. You can disable the requirement for a password globally, or you can specify an individual user to exclude from the password policy. I've just added my username in as an exclusion and it works like a treat!
Good luck

Forced to have PIN on lock screen.

Hi All,
I have been through the pinned thread about tweaks and what not but couldnt find what i was after so i am hoping someone can help.
I have set my emails up on my HD2 and when i did that it made me set a password to unlock my phone...which is fine, however i get a problem every now and then when i go to type my password in that no matter what i type its always wrong, even though its right!
So i though the best thing to do would be to see if there is a way to get it to lock still but with out the password, so i'm hoping there is a tweak or registry edit i can do to not make me set a password.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Many Thanks.

This lock is from a default exchange server security setting. I have the same problem and overruling this setting with a registry edit won't work because on reboot the security policy gets applied again...
For the problem with the wrong PIN. Put out the battery to restart. This fixes the PIN problem (had this problem 2 times since november...)
If anyone knows how to kill the pin entry without changing the exchange security settings I would be very happy ;D

This sounds a bit like the wifi-in-standby issue that I fixed with an application. Basically, it's a reg value that tells it not to turn off wifi when you go into standby, but it resets when you restart the phone. I made a simple app that sets the reg value and put it in the startup folder so it's always run when you restart the phone.
If you give me the reg value that stops it asking for a PIN then I'll write a similar app for that. It may not solve the problem, but it sounds like a plan.
I will look to find the value again. Was in the beginning of my usage... I will give you an update when i've found the value/values.
