Checking mail in standby doesn't work - Touch HD General

As the topic title suggests, I'm having problems checking mail with poutlook while in standby.
The "Check every..." option doesn't work, and when I hit "Send/Receive" and then press Power to enter Standby mode it stays in the same state when I power on the device later.
Does anyone else encounter this? On which ROM version/build?
I'm using ROM version 1.14.401.3 build 22273 WWE.

through which connection ar eyou checking mail? wifi or celluar?
when your phone goes into standby, only celluar connection is active.the wifi is turned off (unless you change the registry or use aadvanced tool to maintain wifi connection while the phone is in standby).

Cellular of course. I know that Wi-Fi doesn't work in standby.

Hi,
I've got the same problem. My X1 is configured to fetch mail through the data-connection (which remains open while in standby). But the mail is fetched only when I get the phone out of standby.
My version is the dutch unbranded version. Rom version: 1.02.937.3

Hi,
I have the same issue with my recently purchased Raphael.
No email pop when the device is in standby mode.
My former phone (Hermes, WM6.0) had a totally different behaviour, retrieving emails at the configured interval, either through cellulafr or WiFi connection. It seemed that the scheduler was able to wake up the device, open the connection as appropriate, and pop the mail server. Then notification was issued as a sound alarm, LED blinking and/or screen pop-up.
Is the new behaviuor linked to WM6.1 or to a manufacturer specific setting?
Please can someone help to sort this out ?!?
HTC Touch Pro T7272 (Raphael)
ROM 1.90.406.5 FRE
Radio 1.02.25.19

I haven't been able to solve this issue. I doubt it's a WM6.1 bug because I haven't encountered it on my previous devices with the same operating system. So the firmware has something to do with it apparently.
I installed one of the push mail programs called Seven (www.seven.com), and checking mail in background works just fine for me now, but this is not a fix for the native client bug of course.

I accidentally deleted poutlook file. Can someone please upload it so I don't have to resort to hard resetting the phone? I have a lot installed on it.
Please.
Thanks.

same problem
I cannot get the mail client to check for mail every 30 minutes when it is in standby.
Anybody?

Same for me. Discovered this problem in the last few days after setting up my Yahoo account to collect every 15 mins. It seems to do it as soon as I wake the device.
Also tried setting up Peak and Off Peak times and the schedule box is greyed out.
I set up a fake exchange server to highlight it but Im not sure if the settings are universal or just for the fake server?
@vangrieg
Which seven product was it please?

How does this Seven work?
Surely there's a way to make it sync while in standby? It's almost like you can't receive a text or a phone call until you wake your device??!?!?!

It works fine in standby. I'm not sure what you mean when asking how it works. It's a push mail service which uses their server as a proxy of sorts, which checks your mail on POP, IMAP, Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail, and even Outlook Web Access accounts. Whenever there's new mail, it's pushed to your device. So you don't check mail from your device actually, it's done by the server, your phone just downloads mails when they arrive.
From the UI perspective, you are just using your stock WM Outlook.

Text messages seem fine, but I've noticed the same with emails - nothing happens til the device wakes.
This is a bit of a deal breaker really - MS couldn't put this in to force people to use Exchange or something daft like that, could they?

I had the same issue on my diamond and You have to use one of the following programms called "Kaiser Tweak or Schaps_AdvancedConfigTool". There are two points, where you can set the "Suspend Timeout from AC resuming and Battery resuming". I have set the values from 1 second to 75 seconds

I dont quite understand how or why it should make a difference but I seem to have inadvertantly fixed this issue with my phone. Im on O2 and couldnt get my MMS to work despite having the correct settings. Eventually on the O2 active connection, I changed the WAP protocol from WAP2.0 to WAP1.2 and my MMS worked. Since then though so has my email! Previously it would only work when the phone was fully awake or when i sent/received, now there are messages waiting when I switch the phone on!
Gav

Ive had this since my Wizard. I assumed it was for a reason. If you dont touch your phone for 8 hours, but it is still connecting and retrieving mail every 10 minutes it is a waste of battery power. You won't see the mail till you bring it out of standby whether it has retrieved them or not.

Schoolydoo, Mine checks every couple of hours and when i use my phone they are there ready to read which im happy with as it irritated me having to send and receive manually. Just posted what Ive found to possibley help others. Ive not had chance to set up a push mail system but as Ive got several different accounts Im happy with how mine is now working. It just seems odd that the protocol thing should effect the auto retrieval.

Hey, could you describe exactly how you did this please? I can't find the setting for this anywhere

In messages select the left hand 'all messages' tab, then right hand 'menu' select mms options, then the 'servers' tab. My phone then shows the only connection as 'o2 active MMS', select it and it opens a screen where you can edit the settings, the bottom option is WAP Version, select 1.2 and its done.
Like I said, stil dont know why it works but deffinately does! Let me know how you get on.

I've changed this option and I'll let you know how I get on. Thanks for your quick reply Gav.

annoying things!!!!

has anyone developed software or knows how to alter the setup on XDAII to avoid the following:-
when a text message arrives it disconnects the POP3 e-mail and has to be manually set back onto the POP3 account before picking up any new mail...... this is annoying!
When a message (e-mail or text) arrives it turns on the screen which is then active, if i have been using the phone and not closed the application fully (just hung up using the silver button) when the phone is in my pocket it starts calling the last number or something like that. I had a 10minute international call like this last week AND IT REALLY PISSED ME OFF!!!!!!!!!
so please if anyone knows how to fix these annoying little habits - could you let me know.
Thanks

By design, the GSM bearer has higher priority over GPRS "attaching" but not "transmission" ... this means if a phone or SMS comes in the middle of a live GPRS session (data is being sent or received) it will be blocked till the last packet is transmitted ... that's why the caller may got busy tone sometimes and other times not ... depends on the GPRS traffic status ... but since the GPRS is "Always on" in WM2003, the session will be resumed immediately but the application must be designed to keep the last session stack

you can select to lock all buttons except power when the device is off
start -> settings -> System -> Button Lock
cheers Biso,
but even with the buttons locked, a new message turns them all on again for however long the auto power off period is...... and then that is provided that no buttons are pushed!!
the point i was trying to make about the POP3 stuff is that if you have the device set to check e-mails say every 5 minutes, in order to do this the folder in the inbox has to be set to POP3 (or whatever you have named it)
if the SMS folder is open then it wont check POP3.
So every time you receive a text message the SMS folder is opened and it will prevent the device checking for e-mails until you go into the inbox and select the correct folder - ie. POP3!
I know its true that phone calls will interupt the GPRS connection, and that is not really a problem (apart from signing out of messenger).
Anyway thanks
- I never use MMS but i guess that would probably cause the same problems????

Download email period more than 60 min

I have a TYTN.
If I want to download emails automaticaly with a POP acount it is possible to set the period for checking emails between 1 to 60 min.
What if I want ot set the period to mor than 60 min ? (for example only 3 x per day)
This would help me to save battery power (because If you set to periodical checking the networkconnection does not disconnect automaticaly. You can disconnect only manualy).
I measured 25 % more battery drain if I am permanet online in the UMTS network.
If I am permanet online I have this nerving bug to get no phonecall when bluetooth is switched on too.
Anyone knowes a trick how to set up?

Please follow my articles - I've also published a solution to this in my article "The secrets of being notified of new, incoming E-mail messages on the Pocket PC" (see the section "The problem of staying-on connection" at http://www.pocketpcmag.com/blogs/index.php?blog=3&p=915&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1 ):
GB-SOFT Tweak will be your friend; go and read http://www.pocketpcmag.com/blogs/index.php?blog=3&p=611&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1
thank you,Menneisyys, for your answer. Of course I already read your (very interesting and usefull) articles and I know the program GB-softtweak already too.
My question is not how to disconnect network after each mailchecking.
I am searching for a programm or a reg.tweak to set the period of checking mails automaticaly to more than 60 min. I prefere a value of 8 hours, thats enough for me. (this saves battery, less downloadvolume, and no disturbing mail notifications at night while sleeping between 23 to 7 h)
So many settings can be changed in the registry, why not this value too?
Maybe someone knows?

I haven't checked this myself, but: most Messaging-related stuff is either stored as a binary flag (in large chunks of binary values) or in WindowsCE databases. I think in this case the latter is the case.
With other words, does this mean that I can not change? (I dont know how to fiddle around in the database).
Anyone with a solution?

I have built a custom program to check emails based on the schedule you built.
I do not know if that's what you are asking.. Please check under my signature for link 'rk-OSR'
thanks for your answer!
before trying I would like to know:
I still use WM5
1) can I set the period for acess to a mailserver as I like? (multiple settings possible?), for example during day every 1 h, at night nothing?
2) I have manny emailacounts. Can I set for each a different period?
3) I dont use wifi. Can I use Umts connection? ( can I set your program use the 'standard internet connection' too? I mean the one which I normaly use for browsing with IE)
4) will the device wake up from standby when checking mailserver (of cours I guess it will wake up when a mail arrives because you mentioned that your programm is notificaton based)
I know, many questions.
thanks in advance

First of all, rk-OSR just performs email account send receive at specified time. Not from the exchange server.
All your email accounts will be available for sync using rk-OSR
1)Sync schedules you have to manually setup each... You can not set up eg for every 1 hr OR sync from 10Am to 5pm. You need to configure each sync
2)Number of mail account does not matter, but you can not specify which account to sync when. All choosen accounts are synced up
3)It will work on wifi or gprs/edge/3g etc
4)You can set up either way. Wake up or not to wake up.
But why don't you install the app and see if satisfies your requirements.
I hated this on WM5. However on Smartphone you could always have it check once a day not just from 1-60 mins. Gladly WM6 Pro fixes all this. You can have it check once a day and also have it send emails when you click "send". You still can't set times for your pop 3's to auto check but once a day is better than every 60 mins.
WM6 Black on the Tytn is solid.
Thank you juiceppc!
now I upgraded to WM6 too (and I am glad I did it)
I set to check mail once a day (I use a pop3 account) and it is working well.
Can somebody tell me how to find out at which time such dayly mailcheck happens?
Is it possible to set the exaxt time for a dayly mailcheck ?
(for example: check mail every day at 12.00 h)

Android 1.0 bugs and glitches

Has anybody else found annoying bugs so far? Here's the ones that I've run into:
- Address Book server sync overwrites changes that you've made from the phone (haven't confirmed this one, might be my fault somehow)
- Multimedia volume slider plays your ringtone once you adjust the volume, but plays it at the volume set in the ringtone slider (not the volume that you're actually adjusting)
- Browser bookmarks list has a lot of trouble keeping site icons straight, it just kind of randomly shuffles them around to the wrong site as you load different bookmarks
- AOL Instant Messenger app shows weird behavior, not sure if it's a bug but it is definitely difficult to use in its current state. Locking the phone prevents messages from showing up, then on unlock they stream in all at once, and if you go too long without checking in on it the program will be terminated but your screen name will not be signed out of AOL's server
- There doesn't appear to be any way to set a vibration for notifications like Text Messages or IMs
- Some apps (MySpace Mobile, specifically) do not account for their process being interrupted when the screen rotates and the current action will be cancelled or the program will freeze.
Overall great phone, I'm really extremely impressed with it as a whole so far. I'm amazed at how fast my internet connection is on EDGE, my old Dash was technically on the exact same connection but took 5 or 10 times longer to load a full web page. Even without 3G the web browsing experience is comparable to using my desktop at home.

Android will get it wrong sometimes on sms threads when the sender is not in your contacts.
I noticed yesterday I received an sms from [email protected] and deleted it. Later an sms from +1913XXXXXXX. When I pulled up the my sms folders later, the newer, undeleted sms from the 913 number said it was from @domain.com.
(and the two are in no way related.) I did a reboot and it still displayed the same.

Go to craigslist.org. I wanted to ask a seller a question. When I email from there, it gives me 2 options, to use my pop 3 email account or gmail. If I use gmail, it takes off the craigslist.org extension and replaces it with gmail.com. If i choose to send with my pop 3, it just opens a blank email without the email address. I try to copy and paste the address into the sending field, but it won't let me. I use craigslist a lot, so this is a bit of a pain...
Otherwise, lovin the G1

LongRunner v0.1 Beta - long life your battery - radio off, email sync on

The idea is: Radio consumes not unsignificant battery power, especially when you're travelling. Sometimes you dont have to be available for calls...
LongRunner turns off the radio part and keep that for defined time interval. Then it automatically sync all POP/IMAP accounts, the On interval should be long enough to even receive SMS.
Download
LongRunner.cab
(Tested on smartphone platform only, however it should work on PPC's too)
What do you think of this idea? Can it save any battery power? Can this be useful for anyone? Should I work on this or delete the project?
that's BRILLIANT!
thank you!
(Does that answer your questions? )
btw, the mail check thingy isn't necessary for everyone.. i suggest having the option to check mail and not make it the only option.
I'm currently not home to try and test this (Happy Thanksgiving everyone) but this is a great idea! I cannot wait to test this and please do continue development!
really great idea ! keep develop this project
i think it's a good idea too... i'll test it next week...

If the purpose of the app is to disable the radio, hence incoming calls, then I would imagine No - it won't ring.
This is a cool Idea!
great idea as i would defenenetly use for sms.... but it is not working on my kaiser.

Whats the difference between setting to "flight mode" when no need to be avail.?
this one is automatic and will check your mail after a specific time interval...
so that you don't need to remember to put your phone on flight mode and then back.

i believe that wont happen, since sms uses radio.
this is for emails only.
correct me if im wrong OP!
It's not for emails only. SMS's and calls are the same thing. when you turn your radio back on you'll receive your messages. Emails have to be checked manually as they don't depend on the network, that's why he added the option to check emails when the radio's turned back on.
I clicked on start and nothing happened.
I have a Sprint Touch Diamond.
Make it a little a clear:
When radio off - How will incoming calls be received ?
SMS may be recd as and when I put my radio active.

you won't get incomming calls. all this does is allow you to set intervals for the radio to be turned on so that you can download your emails and sms.
i think this is what the app does
1 it disables the radio to save your battery(will disable both messages and calls)
2 it will enable the radio for a short period and check for messages
3 after the checking is done it will turn off radio again
My Tilt runs 40 hours on a charge with Flexmail running with online IMAP on 2 folders and periodically syncing 4 others. With Flexmail off, I imagine it would run well over 100 hours.
Doesn't seem like battery life is a big deal to me.. If your battery is running over 3-4%/hr, it's because of a lot of calls and or data and I don't see this program helping much in that direction.

[MMS/SMS] messed up - solved

I don't know if anyone else has encountered this problem, but it seems to me my SMS/MMS manager is messed up. I had a SMS conversation with 2 contacts and they received all my messages at once, 3 times.. I also received several errors at once "message could not be delivered, stored as concept" (needed to press 10 times OK). I received a MMS but couldn't download it (mms worked perfect with my previous phone). I sent 3 MMS's, but only the first one was received. When I try to open "sent items" my manager "blocks" (and does weird things when I keep scrolling down), but I can go back to the other folders. Is it normal that every message I sent is stored in Outbox?
Another q, how can I display "time" in my topbar? I know it was possible with my P3600, but since HTC Home it's a bit difficult to find this (non-existing) option.
Thanks.
I don't have this problem with my Snap - I have an unlocked HTC-branded device (not obtained from a network provider), OS details as per my signature. You?
To get the clock to show in the Windows Mobile Standard icon bar you need ClockOnTop.exe - there's no facility to put the time and date there otherwise (as you could with Windows Mobile Professional).
See here.
Thanks, I got the clock installed now.
I also have an unbranded HTC device. ROM: 1.19.404.1, Radio: 3.45.25.30A.
So you can access "sent items" without a problem? And your outgoing messages, are they stored in "Outbox" or "Sent items"?
I did something wrong during the first setup of my device:
When asked for my internet connection, I pressed "cancel" since my internet provider wasn't listed. Therefore the setup of my device wasn't completed and that's why my message system was driving mad. Probably also the result of receiving a few messages before completion.
I performed a hard reset, chose a random provider and everything's working fine now!

Well I had the same problem and it was really screwed up, my settings were listed and applied. That night it sent my messages time after time to all the contacts I sent messages to previously. I thought there would be something wrong in the network but my operator ensured me the messages originated from my device at a +- 10 minute pace.
I contacted HTC support in the Netherlands, I was told to do a hard reset and it was fixed. I recommend hard resetting all new Snap devices upon first use to eliminate this problem. I also received a message from a fellow new-Snap-owner who had the same problem, so watch out with this as it will tear up your phone bill!
My Snap is unlocked HTC branded and everything else seems perfectly fine!
Thanks for the clockontop tip btw!
