Keyboard requires some force... - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam General

I have an oddity... when using the slideout keyboard, I have to press hard, past the clicky feeling, to get some characters to show up. Is this a bum unit? Anyone have any suggestions?
sheesh, for this kind of money, you'd think there'd be some quality control.
Thanks in advance

Sounds like it may be one of the dodge models... What's your model number? (under the battery, in HERM6xx format)...

This is one of the known problems of early TyTNs (I think up to at least serial numbers 630F... devices). Mine had the same problem - however, after a few days of use it almost disappeared.
It's definitely not something that can be fixed by a software update. You may want to give your device a few more days, and if that doesn't help, send it back for an exchange.
Cheers
Daniel

I found that as you used the keyboard more, the more responsive it became. If I used letters infrequently they can need a firmer push. Over the last month the keyboard has become better and better

My first Vario II had a couple of keys ('a' and 'e') which had this problem. I found it a little annoying because I am quite light on the keyboard so I was missing letters out all the time in texts.
I have since had the phone replaced because it developed the alignment problem and my replacement Vario II keyboard is perfect, it does not require any extra effort at all on any key.
It seems some are more sensitive than others.

Generally it does seem like the buttons require more force than the ones on a HTC Wizard. I think it's something you just get used to after you use the device for a while. I'm still going back and forth between my two devices so am constantly reminded of the differences between the two.

Stock case, no keyboard

Has anyone opted to use the supplied case and leave the keyboard at home? If so does it lighten the load, reduce the bulk, and work pretty well? I realize it removes the ability to view the secondary screen, but for those who don't use the keyboard for much this seems like a way to mitigate the "pain" of carrying the thing around, especially if a bluetooth headset with caller id is used. Anyone?
Thanks

Do you have a different supplied case than the one with the Ameo?
I can't use the secondary screen with mine as the case isn't transparant.. :-/
Stock case is fine....for the moment!
Yeah ive opted to use the case without the keyboard, im finding im getting on with it well (especially since I purchased a Jabra 8010 headset, with caller id and vibrate)
This is great (altho im still getting used to 'whats that vibrating noise? oh its the headset, oops!' hehe!)
I find these work well together, it doesnt matter that I cant see the caller display thats there when the keyboards there.
As regards to typing, ive tried all of the options that are available Resco Keyboard, SPB Keyboard, the lot, and they are all ok, but i still go back to the standard keyboard on the bigger setting so the keys are easy to push. 90% of the time, with fast typing im fine, and happy not to be carrying the keyboard round, which i find worse than the onscreen keyboard.
Its not because of the feel of the keys on the hardware keyboard, its the layout. I just cant get used to it, and ive tried. I dont find it impossible to type, and I guess if i used it more then id get used to it, but the benefits of not carrying it around, outweigh the benefits of having the keyboard with me.
Id prefer a 'Skin' type of case, but even then, id be worried about the screen getting damaged, so for now, im happy to stick with the standard case that came with the Ameo.

I don't have an Advantage yet. I'm in the market for a replacement for my Wizard and have it narrowed down to either the Advantage x7501 or the Nokia E90. But there are so many production problems appearing with the E90 that I'm leaning heavily toward the 7501. Plus the OS (M$), is a known evil and my software for the Wizard will mostly work fine on it. If I do buy one I will likely carry it without the keyboard so long as I can do so while keeping the screen 100% protected, just as tomchap is concerned about.
I rarely use the keyboard on my Wizard and I suspect I would not use it much with the 7501 either, mostly because I don't need to compose much on my phone, and don't browse the web much either while I'm out and about. So for me the trick will be to find a way to carry it without the kb yet keep it protected while still being able to access the it quickly when I need to look something up in a rush. I have a BlueAnt v12 with caller id, so the phone can stay cased while I'm answering calls. FWIW my idea of an ideal case would be a crystal case with a flip up screen cover.
Thanks for the replies
I am putting the phone in my pants pocket without the keyboard. With the keyboard it is too thick. Without, it 'just' fits! W/O the KB the form factor is now in that sweet spot where I don't notice the bulk as much.
Plus, I am used to graffiti text input with my old Sony Clie, Palm OS, so leaving behind the kb is not a big deal for me.

Are you pocketing it while it is cased, or without? If cased, are you using the case that came in the box?
I think he puts the phone in his pocket without any case.
If so, in which direction does your screen point ?

I do the same and the screen is on my body/leg.
I found that this causes a lot of wear on the screen protector (you DO have one right?)
But i was too scared to have the LCD face outward just in case of a bump.
Yes I use the leather case that the 7501 came with.
I am more worried about the camera port getting scratched than the screen, which I have a screen protector on.

Anyone having problems with the keyboard?

This has gotten to be very annoying, whenever I'm using the physical keyboard, some keys, specially those at the top row, do not work. I used to be able to type by simply lightly tapping the keys, but now I have to press down on them with quite a bit of force. I got this problem after I installed the December ROM so I'm guessing there's a connection. Is anyone else experiencing this problem?
Just one key.
I have the problem with the "Y". otther than that I have no other problems with the keyboard.
I dont remember when it started, I just noticed it because every time I typed "yes" in messaging people would ask me why did I wrire "es".
No problems here. Although I only use it for typing here and there and for playing COD2 and Snow Rally City Stage. I figure that the keyboard isn't the most durable feature of this phone so i am very gentle with it. Do you have it insured?

Yeah I do. Doesn't seem like it's a common problem so I guess I'm going to have to call customer service. It's gotten much worse. About one in every four letters don't come up when I type.
I just type away on mine (when I am not lazy and use my touchpal). My 6700 was durable and so far my keyboard seems fairly robost considering how many times I slide it out and tap away...
This is the first thread I have seen regarding a potentially faulty keyboard.
i noticed it too with my 0/. button
my 'D' button
I have the same problem with my 'D' button. Otherwise works great.
got it replaced
Took it to my local repair store and had to wait a couple of weeks because the moguls are back ordered.

Am I the only one who isn't getting along with touch screen typing?

Hi all,
I've been using my HD2 for a new days now and, it goes without saying, it's a fantastic device.
However, there are 2 issues that are making me consider the possibility of a downgrade (everything below that 1ghz snapdragon has gotta be a downgrade!)
1. Battery life
2. Touch typing
Now, 1 goes without saying. I've just today flashed with another radio so hopefully after a bit of trial and error this should sort itself out. So let's write this issue off.
But 2, the typing on the touch screen. I come from using a Hermes (though I used a Ubiquio 501 with front facing qwerty for a few weeks in between as a stop-gap to broken Hermes) which is obviously a full Qwerty slide phone.
I was told my various people that I could type as fast on the Leo as the Hermes which I just can't agree with. Though I can perhaps type as fast, I am constantly making errors which is getting infuriating. Though XT9 obviously helps a lot, when various characters aren't getting detected it becomes a real problem constantly backspacing to fix errors. Attempting to hold a text convo on Skype last night was a nightmare!
Errors on the Hermes were few and far between as you really 'felt' the Qwerty keyboard.
I've never owned another touch-only phone so my only experience is with this HD2. I can't imagine what it'd be like on smaller touch-only devices.
I have rather big hands / thumbs which perhaps doesn't help.
I'm going to stick at it and see whether it starts to be more natural over the next few days, but I just feel so uncomfortable using the touch keyboard right now.
I'm probably opening myself for a grilling from the small hands crew, but this is my opinion based on a few days use, coming from a Qwerty slide phone.
Are there any mods or advice people would recommend for getting used to touch typing?
try using Swype keyboard. It makes typing a lot easier and error-free. Plus, if you make any mistakes, there's a nice correction button to fix it.
For #1, it takes a few days after flashing a ROM (maybe even a radio) before the phone 'settles in' and takes on a reasonable battery profile.
For #2, some have said it can take up to two weeks to get used to the typing! I used to make a lot of errors but now I find myself not really thinking about it - just works magically.
i thought i was going to have issues also until i switched to the xt9. i was used to using the full physical keyboard on my touch pro and therefore didnt like the idea of having sugestive text input, but i have since been using the xt9 with great results. sometimes it gets it wrong, but generally it is correct. stick with it and see how you go. after all, does it really matter if it takes a little longer to send a text message.
Yep, weird thing is that by using the Swype keyboard, I got better at using the ordinary keyboard.
When I first started, I was way faster at using swype with one hand than I was at using the keyboard 2 handed, because I kept making mistakes.
However, now when I try it, I still make a few mistakes using the 2-handed keyboard but I'm slightly faster than I am with swype (only very slightly). And when I make a big mistake I'm a lot slower.
Overall, swype is really good for normal texting, and unbeatable when you're moving and texting at the same time (in my opinion). It learns when you type in a new word or name manually, so that next time you can just swype it.
The HD2 keypad like any other WM phone is extremely slow compared to a phone with physical buttons. i am still trying to find a good keypad that is as responsive (even when settings are set to max) that can type as fast as i can on a phone keypad without delay. The biggest issue i have is the WM default keypad, the buttons are not as big / spaced out as say the iphone and i am still trying to find a good keypad to use.
the swype keypad is good but any custom non dictionary words or double letter words can take some getting use to
From my other post:
"I would say that the best typing tweak is to calibrate the screen the way you naturally using it.
So, if your finger touches the screen under some angle while you type, calibrate that. (think of a cross as a letter and touch it under the same angle).
If you type with two hands, calibrate the left side with the left hand and vice-versa.)"
As reported back, this significantly improves typing experience in some cases.
I was struggling to text, had been since the start, despite installing the sensitivity fix, and calibrating using thumbs in landscape. It also annoyed me that the keyboard would slow to a crawl when something was updating in the background.
I've just moved over to Finger Keyboard and it is SO much better. Still not 100%, but I put that down to me adjusting to a new keyboard.
OP reporting back, and wow - Swype. Definitely one of those applications you think 'nice idea, but I doubt in practice it works the way it describes' - but how wrong is that? What an absolutely fantastic input method. Though I don't use it exclusively for sending text messages and when quickness isn't an issue, it's become my default method for typing IM's, most email and perhaps 70% of other stuff.
It took a little getting used to, but once you've got a bit of practice, typed a few of your more common words in (plenty of them being 4 letters after getting so frustrated typing on my HD2 ) it's a breeze. I love the fact I it recognises lifts from the screen as spaces, meaning you rarely have to use the space bar manually. 90% of the time it correctly predicts what you've swyped, 5% it almost gets it and presents it in the finger friendly list, and the other 5% you're typing something that isn't in the dictionary (do it once - it learns it)
Recommended to everyone to have on their HD2, whether they really want to use it or not. There's always going to be a time when you need 1 hand for something else, at least, particularly if you meet a girl who can take advantage of your HD2's brilliant display when sending pics.
Now I've just this minute recalibrated my touch screen (never even thought of doing that), let's see how the regular keyboard works. And to the person above - you're absolutely right, the use of Swype has improved my regular typing too.
I sure as hell miss a hardware keyboard but I'm getting used to these new input methods and am sure I'll stick with them.
Many thanks to all for the help.
MOD EDIT - Warez info/link removed. Warez is not permitted on XDA
FYI, if you have the new T-Mo HD2, like me, the screen cal is hidden. My keyboard required me to type up and to the left on every touch. Recalibration fixed that. To unhide:

Hi guys
I used to have alot of problems at first with the diamond 2 as it is also a full touchscreen keyboard. However, on the HD2,i have now got used to it especially when i use the xt9 feature. Ok, some abbreviations or short texts(your=ur, this=dis etc) can be a bit of an issue, but overall the experience is good. Now i have trouble using the diamond 2 keyboard compared to the HD2 as the diamond 2 is a resistive touch screen.....have to make more of an effort to type something.

N1 keyboard misfires

My keyboard misfires badly intermittenty. I know it's an old issue but I've never found a solution. The delete key inputs Smileys, the l strikes the spacebar...etc.
It does it with better keyboard also. I'm trying Smart keyboardPro now and it's good so far.
My question is, is this a deep software issue or a uncorrectable hardware issue?
thanks

Turn the screen on and off when this happens and it will be fixxed for a while until the stress builds up again.
I always turn the phone completely off and the keybord stops with the problem

Yeah, as Chopes said, turning the screen off and on works fine for me. Gets really annoying sometimes, I use Swype.
this is a constant problem for me and really the only reason I am considering the Nexus S despite it being a hideously ugly plastic turd.
currently though, the trackball is simply too important for me to lose. here's hoping gingerbread makes it less necessary by making it easier to interact with text via touch
The latest (Korean) radio version supposedly fixes that. I only had the issue a couple times, so I can't confirm.

For me this didn't fix the problems mentioned at all.
While surfing the web I sometimes face them about every 30 minutes and always have to lock/unlock my N1 then to make it working properly again, although I have the newest OTA-update and (Korean) radio fw installed.
Strangely it seems as if these problems would occur less often when holding the screen clean...Don't know if that makes any sense!?
I have an issue where rapidly tapping the delete key selects text... not really sure why the heck that happens.
The only clue I can offer is that it only happens to me when I use one of several wall wart chargers that I have. One of the chargers seems to cause the phone to feel warmer than the others, and once it warms up, the KB goes wild. Removing the battery solves the problem and once plugged back in it doesn't recur till the following night when I plug it back into that particular charger.
Not a big samsung fan.
Is it a dead spot on your phone
I feel for you, this is a well know issue with the low-quality touch sensor panel used on the N1. The best evidence for this is seen with any application that is very touch dependent (like virtual keyboards). If you download any of the multi-touch testing apps in the Market and compare the results with any newer phone, the results are pretty sad. The Galaxy S for example can register 5 individual points at once, the G2/MyTouch 4G can see 4.
The charging/heating/screen going crazy problem is also common place - I run into it at least once a day.
I still love my Nexus, but this kind of craziness makes me think twice about HTC's decisions on parts.
Yes this definitely a major defect for a lot of n1's. I've done numerous swaps behind this issue, and every single one of them has suffered from this defect. As far as features are concerned, the n1 is the best I've had, but because HTC chose not to address the issue, I've decided not to purchase anything manufactured by HTC. Maybe if i only paid a couple hundred for this phone, i wouldnt be as disgruntled, but $600.00 is a lot for a phone with a defective touch panel. I'm so glad Samsung and others are providing better options out there. HTC will not get my money anymore.

[Q] Where to get a replacement vibrator?

Hi everyone!
The vibration motor in my Nexus One seems to have a slight fault. It normally works fine but when I use the keyboard, the vibration motor stops working after typing about 10-20 letters. I then have to slightly tap the phone on the bottom back (where the vibrator is located) and the vibrator then works for another few letters. I guess it either gets stuck or there is an electric fault with it which causes it to stop working after a few vibrations.
I had a look around but the only place I could find is a company called Global Direct Parts and they have a minimum order quantity of 150 Dollars, so that doesn't really make sense Is there any other company (in the UK, US, Asia - as long as they ship to the UK) which supplies this part? Or any other solution to my problem? I guess HTC itself is not an option as they will charge around 100 Dollars at least as well for replacing it.
Many thanks

On a serious note, does that vendor have the part number listed? You could maybe search google for that part number and see if any other hits come up.

The built-in keyboard doesn't have a vibrate option. In fact, no part of the stock OS has a repetitive vibrate mode. I assume that it simply isn't designed to continuously rumble like this, it's a phone not a game controller.

What do you mean by this?
The keyboard has haptic feedback built in and mine work very well and continuously for very long emails so it certainly is a fault with OP's hardware.
Also, the motor IS designed for continuous rumble as it's primarily intended as a ring substitute, intended to work for at least 30 sec at a time.

Also, if you press and hold the volume down button for a while, the phone will vibrate for as long as you hold the button down. I use that for faking incoming calls during meetings that I want to get out of

How long is the actual warranty? Because me feeling is that the phone is now older than a year. Plus the phone is routed and HTC might argue that due to the rooting, programs have used the vibration motor in a way not designed and therefore broke it...but I guess I could give it a try and contact HTC to see what they have to say!
In regards to the part number - Global Direct Parts specifies HTC736660 as it, though this might be just their internal number as a Google search only leads back to them...and I guess there must be another company on this planet to also provide such a part.
Regarding the keyboard, the vibrator even seems to fail when I press the virtual keys on the bottom too often, it just seems to start malfunctioning once it had to vibrate a couple of times. It clearly is some sort of fault, I had a Nexus One before (then switched to Apple and back to the Nexus) and the first one never had this issue...
Just to add - incoming calls is not so much of an issue, I only had it once or twice that it didn't vibrate and it also doesn't stop half way through, small vibrations e.g. from keyboard input where the motor has to switch on and off constantly seems to be the problem, not so much to keep running once it has started. So it seems as if this 'swing element' that causes the vibrations seems to either get stuck or the motor does have a slight electric fault and sometimes can't get this element to rotate.
Thanks
Alex
Cant be a year old.......dont think it was released until early January 2010. It comes with a 1 year warranty in USA, and 2 years in the UK

HTC doesn't care if the phone is rooted or not most of the time, just don't mention it. It's not like you flashed a ROM that messed with the Vibrate key right??? Downloading a non-market app and using it does not void the warranty either. Trust me, call and just set up a swap. BEWARE! I'm on my 3rd swap and every swap I get comes a new problem (Antenna, Dust, LCD, Build). I kinda just wanna get rid of the phone now, but until then I'm going to keep swapping till I get a good one.
Hi!
Good to know, thanks...I had a look for my Google receipt, couldn't find it. Do you know if HTC cares as the phone (just checked) can't be older than 11 months, was released mid-January...
Thanks again!
