Anyone ever had a problem with their O2 XDA Mini S not recognising a mini SD card?
I got a 512MB one on Thursday (not a cheapo one, a SanDisk bought from the O2 shop), and when I put it in (with the device on), nothing happened. If I went to Settings > System > Storage Card, it said "Not inserted".
Ok, I thought, maybe it needs formatted somehow. Couldn't find an option for that. So I thought maybe reseting the device, but that didn't work either. I took the card out and put it back in, and it instantly showed up this time.
Anyway, all was fine over the next 2 days, till last night - I was messing about with TomTom 6 (which is on my SD card) before I went to bed last night, and all was ok. I exited the app, I put the phone on charge and when I got up this morning and started TomTom I got "No maps found". This was because when I checked Memory > Storage Card, it said "Not inserted". Popped the card out, put it back in, works fine.
Any seen this behaviour before, and do you think it's more likely to be a problem with the device or the card?
Cheers
I had the same problem with a 2GB MiniSD after checking with varius programs I just removed and re-inserted the card. It was detected immediately and has worked fine since (if it has not I've just done the remove and re-insert thing).
Was it an expensive one or a cheap one? I've read on here people have had issues with really chep Mini SD cards. My O2 was a little unstable for a bit when I got my 2GB card. But then I paid £45 for 2 of the blighters from eBay so it wasn't surprising. Currently it seems OK though.

I had this same problem. I fixed it by removing the miniSD card from the wizard. Then soft reset the device. THen turn it back on. Wait for it to fully boot back up and re-insert the card. Also, do you have a card reader you can test the card on to make sure its the phone, not the card?
Seems ok in my card reader, but then it was only in it for 5 mins.

Hi all,
Had my XDAIIi for a month or so now... beside the odd lockup it's been more or less trouble-free.
However, I put the phone in the cradle today and got a strange message from WMP about sync settings... upon further investigation I found that my storage card is no longer recognised by my phone. It a Viking 512mb card.
I can't see it on File Explorer or via exploring on Active Sync. It's as if no card is plugged in... I tried another old 8mb card that I had and it works fine.
What should I do. Try to return the card, or is there a way I can reformat it? Any advice would be helpful...
Hi
I got the same problem, this is the second SD, I got the same weird msg.
Did you find a way to fix it?
The SD is not recognize neither in digitals cameras (tried only one) or other pocket pcs (other XDAlli and an HP).
I've heard form some friend that lot of people are getting this problem...
maybe vikings are troublesome..

Yep my new XDAlli killed a dane-lec 512mb card after a couple of weeks.. Couldn't use it in anything. Got another 512mb card this time branded as PRT?? card has been OK for the last 4 weeks but I do get the "storage card detected - search for audio & video files" message every now and then.. I also find the XDA can't see the card sometimes but a quick removal & replacement fixes the issue. I have also notice xbackup now takes around 10 mins..It was taking over an hour with the dane-lec...
I'm sure there is a compatibility issue with somecards..
AMAZING
I just read this post out of interest, casually browsing through the forum waiting for 5 o'clock , went to my XDA 2 and guess what.... no storage card!!!
Forunately, a soft reset was all it needed but how spooky
odd my xda2 like all others take a few sec's to reinit the sd card when it wakes up
and if it's needing some batt it dont
i've used sandisk slow version 128MB
and now kingston ultra something something 512MB
never had any issues apart from the sandisk being superslow
So once it's toast, is it really toast or can I somehow reformat it?
I guess I'll try to return it...
Can anyone recommend a card that hasn't reported any issues?
I am having the same problem... I am using PNY cards and am now on my fourth card. I am going to try a new branded card when i get the chance. People seem satisfied with ScanDisk cards so am going to try them.
MMCdata not seen
My XDA II recognize my MMC but file explorer does not show all of the data. Even my card reader does not show the data in MMC. But memory shows that Card is in use and all of the data is there as shown by the memory used... Please help!
Help! Storage Card suddenly not showing - dead?
Has anyone had problems with the Storage Card completely dying? I cannot read my 1GB miniSD card on my Wizard device at all any more. It started being weird yesterday but after a reset I was able to access the data, but today it is totally gone.
A 16MB one works fine. :? These cards don't generally die that easily do they?
Could this be a driver issue or something else so I can get my data back? I have tried many resets both with and without the card in place.
I've the same problem (I guess) with my card. I'm not able to read my card on the vario. When i inserted my SD card in a PC he cant read the card. When i start my PC with the card insered system hangs on loading windows.
When I restart my phone with the SD card inserted WIFI wont go on, do you have th same problem CJSnet ?
This looks like the SD disk is something like an (unreadable?) bootdisk ?
I had the same problem with a SanDisk 1GB card recently. I sent it back to the supplier and they replaced it.
Before my "Mini S" I had a "2i" and it was well known that it would "eat" cards. On that forum they compiled a list of "never eaten" cards and recommended staying away from anything not on the list.
I suspect the Wizard may have a similar problem.
i've also got a problem with my miniSD, sometimes it doesn't recognise the card. But when i remove it and re-insert a few times it does work again.
A common problem with the SD-cards is that their contacts are dirty, cleaning sometimes helps.
Thanks mmm_ok, can you provide a link to that list of 'never eaten' cards please?
Mine is an unbranded type from Viking, so that could be the reason.
zawoot, I had no problems with WiFi and the card inserted.
Have now solved it. When I loaded the card on a PC and ran chkdsk, some of the files were corrupt (plus the boot partition I expect). I copied the salvagable files to the PC, formatted the miniSD which took about an hour (!), and now the PPC can read it again. Now I just copy back the files from the PC, and the lost ones from a recent backup.
What a pain in the backside. HTC not fixing the 'eating cards' bug has cost me 3 hours of my life. What price technology!
SD card problem
I'm facing the same problem. The last thing I tried was format the SD Card
using Pocket Mechanic "Logical Format" - "do not use quick format", format it
two times and just that. Also, as a test, I'm not using the full SD Card
capacity, my SD has 1 G and at this time I'm using 700M and since 10 days ago
everythiong is fine. As an additional test I leaved the battery goes to a
very low level and reseted the device to see it it corrupt the data .. but
is still ok.
My 2GB Adata myflash card has done this. I'm so mad, it has to go all the way back to china for repair.
This is really wierd behaviour for a phone. HTC in all its shoddy glory.

SO is there any other issues after you did the format?
I have an ATP 1Gb MiniSD and sometimes my MDA just said that it can't execute an application (that's installed to the miniSD card) because it was "usigned". When I run Resco Explorer, I noticed that the card is NO LONGER shown (???). So I took out the card, re-inserted it and it's now shown in Resco Explorer as "Storage Card2" ! So of course none of the program works since the links (in registry especially), pointed to "Storage Card", not the one that ends with 2. So my solution (for now) is to just shutdown the device, wait for a few minutes, then turn it on again.
I have had 2 cards from mobymemory 1gb and now 2gb - not one problem run well. Can highly recommend mobymemory the use single density cards or something that many of the other manufactures don't use. my advice stay away from cheap cards.
I used a backup utility my card died, and windows could not open it, I reformatted on my digital cam and it works again. It's the software loaded on it.
My MiniSD card popped out of its slot spontaneously last night. Ever since my Qtek 9100 would not recognise it any longer. It still worked on my card-reader attached to my PC. In the end I decided to format the card (not quick format) and now my Wizard recognises the storage card again. Losing all my downloaded attachments during the process. FYI It is a SanDisk 1GB MiniSD card.
sandisk 1g card is almost 2-yrs old and was first for typhoon and now serves faraday and wizard and just started acting wierd on wizard. every so often device does not read card upon waking. pulling it out and reinserting fixes it but i've moved programs to device. poo!!!
Storage Card seemed dead
I had a simuliar problem with my original qtek 1.6 rom until I upgraded to the latest imate 2.17.
Having worked 5-10 minutes with wi-fi, the storage card became invisible and unaccessible. To make it visible once again it was necessary to soft reset the device.
This and some other problems disappeared once I upgraded to 2.17.
Hope this help
Hi All,
Wonder if this is common or should I return the unit now. Had my Dopod 838 Pro for a week now. Great phone/PDA but since new, it does not always recognise a Micro SD card at first insertion. Tried 1x512 Sandisk and 2x1gb Ultra II cards with same issue. Phone has latest ROM from factory, 1.03.707.4. The insertion seems "clunky" too, that is, it doesn't go in smoothly like regular SD and Mini SD devices I have got.
What I have noticed is that if I only insert just enough to lock the card in it seems okay, but if I push it firmly home, it is more likely to remain unrecognised.
In every case, once recognised, it runs, saves, reads from the card flawlessly so it does seem like this is a hardware issue. But if all the Hermes phones are similar, it may be just one of those characteristics of the phone and nothing too much to worry about. Just like to know so I can relax or act as the case may be.
Thanks for any feedback guys...
John
Yes, I have found a similar issue. If I remove and re-insert the card a few times it eventually gets noticed.
It's the only glitch I have had on the device after 3 flawless months

Quite a few seem to take a few goes before recognised but usually seem to work fine once recognised.
Might be a bit concerned about jpfe8851's clunky slot and if it seems to go past the normal stopping point - Have not seen reports about this and mine does not do this.
Mike
I've noticed that it works everytime for me if I insert the card with the device turned off.
Martin
If you use your camera application to save the pictures on a memorycard, try to run the camera after inserting the card if it doesn't detect it. The camera app. then informs you that there's a new memcard inserted and do you wanna use it to save the files on.
Not so much of an hasle, considering how often you really remove/insert memory cards and the hermes has the camera button just opposite to card slot. And the application doesn't stay on the process list if you close it from the X (cross on upper right corner). The OK button doesn't completely close the application.

This sounds like good practice and I'm sure for most folks this works. I think though there some people that struggle to get Hermes to recognise the card even when inserting it when off. Generally it does recognise it in the end but there could be a few reasons for these issues (formatting, fragmentation, poor physical contact and so on).
I think your advice is good though and should become routine whenever the card is removed/inserted.
Mike
I've used a 1GB PQI, a 2GB normal Sandisk, and a 2GB Sandisk Ultra, and all have worked fine. Except one of the 2GB doesn't like my card reader
i found formatting the card help. Originally it would only be detected if the phone was turned off.
Unfortunately I didn't have a card reader, so used an adapter to format it in my digital camera and have no idea how it formatted it. But it now works everytime without fail!
Thanks Guys...
Sounds like this is fairly common. I've found even since I posted the original question, that provided I just push the card until it clicks, it starts up every time. With my old Axim x50v and Atom, I had to really push the SD cards as far as possible to engage the lock whereas the Dopod clicks just after the edge of the card is past flush. Gently does it seems the rule.
Mike, I appreciate your concern but the clunkiness I think is more related to the card design, having the bumps along one side, than the slot. Also, these things are all rated as hot swappable, so we should all not have to turn off just to change a card. I don't change cards that often, but when I travel, I swap cards a bit as I take a couple cards with music on to listen to while flying.
For all with the issue, I suggest you do as I said in the first paragraph as that seems to be the clue, just press the card until you feel it engage the lock and see what happens.
Thanks all for your feedback. I'll carry on without a visit to service as the phone is terrific and the keyboard (my reason to replace the Atom) is superb.
Best regards,
John
*Solution*
I've also had the same problem, but I think I've figured it out and it's a hardware issue.
If you don't pay attention to how you put the card in, it will go in "crooked". The problem is that the little notch on the side of the microSD won't activate the switch inside the phone that tells it that "the card is in".
The solution is to watch very closely how the card goes in. If you make sure that the side of the microSD card with the notch, goes in straight and flush with the side of the slot, it will recognize it every time.
i've done all the suggestions given on this topic but i still can't get my JasJam, which is about 13hours old, to recognice my microSD card. I've tried a 512mb and a 1gb and no luck... i'm leaving tomorrow and i'm worried if the service center will want to repair it rather than exchange it.
hi fone_fanatic,
if its a fault with the jasjam, you will receive a replacement if its under 30 days old. but the replacement procedure sucks.
Are you in Australia and a Telstra customer? If so, telstra calls imate support to obtain a service reference number, then they will send your pda to mobile phone solutions (MPS) in QLD, they will inspect it and then return a new jasjam to your retail outlet. once the retail outlet receives it they will give you a call to come and collect it.
the warranty is Imate, not telstra, so once it leaves their stores, imate are the ones who do the replacement through Mobile Phone Solutions.
Turn around time, 1 week for my replacement to be couriered to QLD from Melbourne, 5 days turn around time from MPS, 4 days for the new replacement to be couriered back to melbourne, 1 day for me to pick it up. so around 3 weeks.
Now, MPS is closed from Dec 22 to Jan 3 and they are out of JASJAMS, they are awaiting more from imate for warranty replacements (my friend is wating for his replacement) so turn around time could be longer.
life sucks sometimes......
Thanks for that info Jasjamming. I'm in saudi arabia visiting family and friends for the holidays, and the process you just described soounds very similar to the one that was described to me today. BUT... turns out the device is fine, the cards i tried were both Nokia MicroSD cards that came with nokia phones and for some reason the jasjam won't read them. So i bought a 1gig Sandisk and it works fine!
Im having the same issue with my Hermes and a Sandisk 2gb card. It worked fine for a few weeks, but now wont detect at all. Interestingly the screen comes on when the card is inserted or removed - I'll test the card in a reader to see what shows...
A soft reset always seems to work for me

There's a thread here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=294324 which gives some fixes to this problem. The thread is a bit long so it may be best to read from the end backwards.
Also, I believe this problem has been taken care of in the cooked WM6 roms. My SD card hasn't disappeared since upgrading to WM6, but did all the time when with Vodafones UK rom.
broken microSD card?
I have a Sandisk 2GB microSD card, that after a few days stopped working. Whenever I insert it, the device hangs completely. It doesn't matter whether I had turned off the device before inserting. The device stays unresponsive when I eject the card again, I always have to do a soft reset to bring the device back to live. I tried to insert the card carefully (as someone here mentioned the issue with the little notch), but it doesn't make any difference. The card is never recognized, not even after a soft reset. This is obviously very frustrating, as I had just installed a couple of useful apps on the card.
Do I need a new card or is there anything else I could try? ( I do not have a card reader....)
ROM: 1.23.78.3
ROM date: 08/01/06
Radio: 1.06.00.00
it must be the sandisk 2GB microSD cards as i have one to worked great for a week, then stopped working....i formated using the pc and now it is recognized as a 1 GB card, in both phone and pc..

Quoted for truth.
Hi,
yesterday evening, just when I wanted to set the alarm and go to bed, I suddenly noticed an alarming sign on top of my display. The message that came along with it was that my sd card has been removed which definitely wasn't the case. I tried several thing to let the device know that the card is still there but none of them worked:
- re-entering the card
- rebooting the device (with and without card inserted)
Afterwards I inserted an old 2gb card and the device noticed it at once. Then I tried to use the probably one with an SanDisk Card Reader on my Computer but it didn't either - it didn't show up.
Is there anyone who experienced the same or has a clue what may have happened? The phone is vodafone branded an bought in early August. I never updated the ROM nor did I try any risky tasks ;-)
Ok, I have SPB backup to backup my device every morning at 2am. I have been doing this for the past few months, with no problems at all. Anyway this morning I woke up, and there was a message on the screen saying "backup unsuccessful" but the HD2 did soft reset, because I seen the splash screen for a few seconds.
Anyway I noticed that the wallpaper was not showing, and didn't think anything of it at first. But when I tried playing some music, my device didn't show the Micro SD card as being installed. So I popped the card out, and back in, and still the HD2 couldn't read it. Also under the "SD card & phone memory" it shows no SD card installed, even though the card it in the HD2.
Got home, and tried putting the Micro SD card in my PC, and even my PC won't read the card. Don't get any error messages, put it just shows nothing?
Bit gutted about this, as I had my last 3 backups on the SD card, along with other documents I need.
Suggestions please?
seems the hd2 is hard on memory cards. I scan and fix mine about 3x a week just to be sure. Since then I haven't had any problems.
My memory card would not allow me to add anything on to it.,.,pics I took wouldn't save and such.,I even tried it in a digital camera with the same results. I couldn't even format it on my PC.,just gave me an unsuccessful reply. One thing I did notice was I couldn't move certain stuff off the card (I think it was in opera) it would show me the file and when I tried to move it off the card it said the item no longer exists.,or something along those lines.,(sorry I'm at work and it's been a while since I have had this happen..,I could always reattempt and post results if you guys would like) I threw in an 8G card and everything has been fine.,but would really like my 16g card back

Gonna keep that in mind. Purchased a new 8GB card, but had to restart my phone from SCRATCH!
Hi
There is a quick link to find out if you cards are real or not? I cannot post this link , but Google detecting usb counterfeit drives.
I know a lot of people buy cheap from ebay etc, and few are real good copys. Always remember to buy sealed branded makes with the class in the circle (2,4 or 6)
Living here in Thailand i know all about the copies!! I bought a few, and yes they were copies not 8gb, but 2gb. so at least with the link above it can keep you right.
Also when you get your new real card, erase it in you mobile, then format it before use.
I back up my SD to my D/Drive, but i unhide and show all files on the main computer to make sure all files are transfering over, including the hidden ones.
Just a few tips lads.

Hi, My 2 MicroSdHC 8GB Memory card experienced the same. 1st card only work for 1 and a half day and the 2nd card only work for 1 day!! It's showed NO SD CARD on my HTC HD2 Leo. I bought both card on Ebay. They sent me the replacement card. Unfortunately both card are same. They claimed that they are selling 100% Genuine Micro SD Card!! Lucky I am getting my full refund from them after open a dispute!! Now, I am trying to get other 16GB MicroSDHC for mh HD2 Leo. Hopefully the new 16GB card work well with my HD2 Leo.
