I have a v1605, and am getting alarmingly short battery life out of it. For example -
7pm: fully charged
>> one 10 minute call, about 10 emails received
4am: completely dead
The only thing I have running is Goodlink push email... I'm not sure how often that polls/ is active, but I cant believe it's all about Goodlink - they wouldnt still be in business. I have the screen on its dimmest, and set to turn off after 10 second of inactivity.
So my question is - what kind of battery life are people getting?
The best I've had is 24 hours - anyone get consistently more than that?
Tytn battery life
One other thought is that I'm currently roaming on Voda in Japan, and so am on an entirely 3G network.
Does anyone know if 3G is more power-hungry than 2G?

3G consumes more battery than normal gsm
Goodlink is a notorious powerhog, too...
My 1 GB Twinmos memory card was draining my battery. Switched back to my 512 MB card and and the battery life was doubled...
Never the less TyTN should live longer. Perhaps smth is wrong with the battary
As an indicator, I spend around 2 hours on calls and receive around 150 mails a day via Vodafone Blackberry push email Client, with the phone swapping between GPRS and 3G for connectivity.
My phone is fully charged at 7am and by early afternoon (3ish) I get the battery low message.
I was also experiencing short battery life with my TyTn and found that when I forced the phone to only use GSM my battery life was extended by 24Hrs.
If I want to use the phone for 3G or HSDPA I then enabled it.
To adjust the setting, go to "Settings", "Phone", "Band" and adjust Network Type to "GSM"

Battery is draining too fast when 8525 is connected data mode ( Goodlink or Xpress.)
This forced Cingular to postpone the imminant release of 8525
Any body is noticing this with the TyTn ?
Goodlink is a notorious battery killer on many devices...
I used to use Xpressmail on my SX66, and it was also a battery killer (and extremely unstable).
I'm not using either program on my TyTN though...
I'm using Exchange ActiveSync with DirectPush via PDAConnect (and isp.cingular APN). I've seen no issues whatsoever with battery life.

Goesto11, do you have to have the PDAConnect plan with Cingular to get pushmail without using Goodlink, or can I get it with just unlimited Medianet plan?
I have been on 3G, with DirectPush from my exchange server and battery's down to 50% since morning ..
I don't use Goodlink at all (never did).
Unlimited MediaNet forces you to use wap.cingular, which can cause timeout issues (see Sleuth's notes on the subject).
There is definitely better performance on mail delivery / polling frequency (and thus battery life) on using isp.cingular, which is only available with PDAConnect.
Whether or not the improvements are worth an extra $20/mo is a personal decision...
austin_boy ... OT .. Any news of anymore ROMs from Cingular?
@austin_boy: I can test this on my TyTN to see if the problem reproduces (Indicating hardware or not). Is v1.34 the ROM I should be using?
Cingular release of 8525
Does anyone know when Cingular plans to release this phone? My SX-66 is on its last legs.
Goesto11... thanks for the info.
Jhouse... that's the question of the year. No one knows. Speculation has been wild all over the internet. Some piece of Cingular literature said Oct. 29th, and then that ended up being an outdated piece of literature. I've heard everything from tomorrow all the way through the end of the year as release dates. Don't bother asking any of the sales people in any of the retail stores. They don't know either.
There is no one place on the net to go to keep updated on the status, but if I had to suggest a couple places to keep in tune to everyday to see if any news about it comes up, it would be Engadget Mobile (www.engadgetmobile.com) or Cingular's HTC forum (forums.cingular.com and then click on 'Cingular/HTC' and do a search for 8525). Take what they say in that forum with a grain of salt though.
Be patient. The release is imminent (before the holidays). No operator will launch a device with a potential defect. The battery problem is on the way to get solved

@austin_boy:
If you need more testing done prior to release, you know where to drop off the "fixed" ROM...
I have noticed the Battery drain on my Tytn, but it is only a problem when connected to 3G. Seems to be a little better on the Cingular 1.34 rom, than the stock Tytn 1.18.
I am in a 3G area all the time so my Tytn is always connected to the 3G network using the Cingular isp.cingular APN. When I first got the Tytn, the battery would go down 50 to 60 percent overnight without use(only push email with about 10 emails rec'd) if left in the Auto selection (it seems to search for the signal when set to Auto). It would only go down maybe 10 percent if set to GSM only. And would go down 30 to 50 percent if set to 3G only.
I let the battery run out several times in between full charges and it seems to be better.
I have found it is better to set the network band to either GSM/1900-850 or Wcdma/1900-850 and the battery lasts longer. Yes, it lasts a lot longer on GSM, but if I wanted just GPRS/EDGE why buy the Tytn. SO I usually set it to 3g.
I charge it on my daily commute (45 minutes) while listening/watching morning TV and the occasional call via bluetooth. Receive probably 35 to 60 emails via MSexchange Push. Make approx 10 to 15 calls and occasional surfing the web while on the phone. I sometimes have to charge it during my day at the office, but it will usually last until my drive home.
So, yes the battery does not last very long. My Prophet and Universal can easily last more than a day. But I love that 3g speed. So, if you have a tytn; get a charger for home, work and a car charger also.
I am hoping another Cingular Rom shows up for more testing.....
http://www.mobiletechreview.com/phones/Cingular-8525.htm
And guess what? They like the TyTN button arrangement better (not to mention the fact that it's unlocked and has the front camera).
Enjoy...
wow, this posts looks familar; I swear I just read this post at hofo...joking aside, it is a good review
Battery last for 3 days?????
The author of the review mentions that his 8525 battery lasts 3 days in 3G area. Me TyTN's battery is dead in one day if using Cingular's UMTS network in Boston area and it's without using WiFi and Bluetooth. Shoud I enable WiFi or listen to online Internet radio over 3G my battery is dead in 1-2 hours. What's your experience? Or my battery is defective?
(Hermes TyTN ROM 1.18.225.3, Radio 1.13)
I'm in Boston and get about 1 day of life from the battery, but I'm using goodlink which is a notorious battery hog. If I set goodlink in offline mode and manually sync I get about 2 days of life (including some light inet browsing).
I can see the battery lasting a couple of days with just UMTS ... but with DirectPush in the mix .. a day is a good bet .. add BT and you can only imagine what will happen ..
Hello Friends !!
I have purchased Dopod 838 Pro in Septemeber'06. It was working perfectly fine. I was mainly using the PDA to check my official emails. I had configured the Pocket Outlook to check for my email account every 15 Minutes and download only the Headers for the new emails.
Recently I have installed the following Software in my PDA.
1) Spb Mobile Shell
2) Phatpad CalliGrapher 8.4
3) Lexisgoo English Dictionary
4) Novii Remote Deluxe
5) Speereo Voice Translator
6) VitoVoice2Go
7) PhoneAlarm 1.58
After installing the above Software, I noticed that the Battery of my PDA started draining very fast (i.e. around 10% in one hour). I recharged the battery to 100% and it came down to 40% in 8 Hours of time.
I therefore uninstalled all the above Software, but the battery problem remained the same. Thereafter, I Hard Reset the device and did not install any additional Software (apart from which are already installed by Dopod). I just configured my email settings to check for the emails after every 15 minutes. But the Battery is still draining at the same speed (i.e. around 10% per hour).
I am using SingTel Mobile Service and I remain connected to their UMTS Service all the time for checking of my emails after every 15 minutes. Apart from that there is no additional Software installed and no Background Application is running.
I also use ActiveSync once or twice in a day to update my Contacts and Appointment details. I have already used the "Fake Server Trick" to stop the automatic running of ActiveSync in the PDA.
Earlier my PDA was used to remain ON only for few hours in a day and I did not notice the Battery drainage problem. I used to recharge the battery after every two days. Now my PDA always remains ON and connected to UMTS Service of SingTel all the time.
I want to know whether this is the normal Battery Consumption of Dopod 838 Pro or is there any problem with the Battery of my PDA.
Many Thanks for your Help !!
I think from what I've read and experienced, just being connected 3G drains the battery significantly. I'm actually experiencing the same problem but after upgrading to the leaked rom. At work, I have 3G connection, but only outside of the building. I'm always in and out, but I guess this could be contributing to the battery drain. Actually, I don't know what the deal is because the majority of the time, I'm on Edge. Maybe this is tied into the new rom (and radio rom), but I can't put my finger on it.
Many Thanks Furila21 !!
I also fell that that the Battery Drain problem relates to always on 3G connection. But it is quite strange that 3G is consuming so much of battery. Infact I have configured the Outlook to check and download the emails from my POP3 Server after every 15 minutes. Apart from that, I am not using the Internet connectivity for any other application. But still around 10 percent of the Battery get consumed every Hour and which is quite high.
I have now configured my PDA to use GPRS instead of 3G / UMTS and it seems that the Battery consumption has improved little bit after that.
Another alternative is to configure the PDA for Auto Disconnection of GPRS / 3G after Outlook downloads the emails from the Server. This can be configured through "GB-SOFT-GPRS-Tweak" or similar utilities, but I am looking for the program which can immediately disconnects the GPRS connection after use, rather than waiting for 1 or 2 minutes of no-activity.
Please do let me know the exact status of Battery Consumption of your PDA.
Friends, kindly share your experience if any of you have also faced the high Battery consumption problem while using 3G on Dopod 838 Pro.
Friends,
I have now configured the PDA to only use GPRS (i.e. GSM) for checking the emails after every 15 minutes. I have not installed any additional Software after Hard Reset and now I am using the PDA as per the default factory settings. Only Outlook is checking the emails after every 15 minutes.
Now the Battery consumption has been around 30% in the last 12 Hours (i.e. from 100% to 70%). During this period, I have not received any calls and I have not used my PDA for any other purpose.
Kindly advise if the above consumption is normal or is it still on the higher side.
Many Thanks.
Friends,
Kindly give me an approx. idea for normal Battery Consumption of "Dopod 838 Pro" in 24 hours (without using the GPRS or 3G).
Many Thanks !!

With email checking every 15 mins on Edge, this sounds normal. As mentioned before, just being on UMTS/HSDPA will consume a large amount of battery power; it makes sense; the faster speed, the more battery gets consumed- Esp. with you having the connection active, checking email every so often. I've come to the realization that this isn't "strange" but is the norm for 3G usage.
Hi,
I'm starting this thread to collect informations about using the N1 on a HSDPA network. Over the next weeks I'll be posting stats and infos about my experience on a HSDPA network.
*-----------------------------------------------------*
Tips
*-----------------------------------------------------*
(reserved)
*-----------------------------------------------------*
Battery optimization
*-----------------------------------------------------*
HSDPA seems to be very hard on the battery, and to get the most of your N1 there will be some sacrifice.
What COULD help:
- Dial *#*#4636#*#* and set the phone to "WCDMA Only" in the phone informations.
- Try the app called "battery refresh" on the android store. It will discharge your phone. Then boot into recovery and wipe your battery stats.
- Install setCPU from the android store (1$) and force it to 245/576 while the phone is standby/sleep (thanks djmcnz)
- there's an app on the appstore called JuiceDefender that allow you to disable APN based on time or your location.
What WILL help
- disable sync (push). This have a MAJOR impact on HSDPA network
- and obliviously set brightness to auto or lowest acceptable value.
*-----------------------------------------------------*
Signal optimization
*-----------------------------------------------------*
So far I've tried two different radio rom, and the older 4.03.00.21_2 seem to offer better signal. So you could try using that one.
*-----------------------------------------------------*
Bandwith optimization
*-----------------------------------------------------*
- If you have a rooted N1, you could try in "spare parts" the hotweiss's Radio mod (in miscellaneous). In my case, there's not difference but still could be worth a try.
*-----------------------------------------------------*
N.B. : Fellow canadians, if you are on Bell or Telus with your N1, your are on a HSDPA network.

You could try JuiceDefender, I think that app does exactly that.
I seem to get alot of network connection errors from market, to internet, and some games that use internet.
I noticed my signal is usally full bars but switches alot between 3G and H (HSDPA)
Are my connections errors due to the switching of 3G and H much like some people have issues with EDGE and 3G switching back and forth in certain spots?
Also that *#*#4636#*#* didn't work. EDIT: nevermind, needs to be done on the stock dialer.
I set my network from WCDMA prefered to WCDMA only. See how that works. EDIT: Still switches from 3G to HSDPA...

I believe this is normal behavior. The 'WCDMA only' option disables EDGE network connections so that you only use the 3G/HSDPA.
Cheers
I hope there is a bug on the N1 radios..Cause I can't last 20hrs with 1hr worth of calls..and small use of internet. Yet other people saying they easily go pass 30hrs with heavy use...liars..
I can still get though a full day, business and pleasure on a single charge using HSDPA, WiFi and making calls... lots of calls.
In an average (16h) day I will be connected via 3G for about 10 of those and WiFi for the remaining six. I make about 180 mins of calls a day, 20% of those using the speaker, I have a feed reader with 20 feeds that update constantly, I listen to music to and form work (20mins + 20mins), I might play a game or two and I often read xda and/or download during the day. Brightness at about 55% fixed.
I charge my phone overnight, every night (have been doing this since my original RAZR anyway).
I have never, ever run out of battery during a given day.
Setting the CPU to min in standby is not a good idea - it needs some headroom to actually complete background tasks and 245 is too low IMHO and will be counter-productive. I suggest 245/576.
If your usage is much above mine then I'm not sure how many marginal tips will be needed before it makes a meaningful difference...

I got these errors on T-Mobile as well - since moving over to AT&T with the AT&T version they have completely disappeared.

Testing Juice Defender now. So far it's an incredible solution to battery drain, if it does what it claims. Will post findings this weekend.

I don't know what SL4 is.
But a day is absolutely normal for a phone with HSPA enabled and activsync connection turned on all the time.
1 day with only
winMO
3G off
sound n vibes off
no panels slideshow whatsoever
and u say 1 day is normal

What is relevant on the consumption side is 3G/push email/data exchange and (obviously) apps stuck @100%.
Everything else will not change greatly the battery performance
everything is set to power savings whatever i could find here on xda forums and few tricks up my sleeve
ohhh 1day is when my phone is just turned on no calls made/recieved screen in
standby and full gsm signal
I get almost 30 hours 3g,calls (4h) without charging,no majour mods done, upgraded to latest firmware and sd card fix.
THERE IS something wrong there,if you dont talk or play with the phone it (airplane mode) it should last 2 nights, mine did so.

Not necessarily.
The battery performance is strongly depended on the network conditions.
And this not means just 3G v.s 2G, or good/bad reception conditions.
There are many other variables: the 3G type (plain UMTS, HSDPA 1.8/3.6/7.2/more, HSUPA and so on), the 2G type (plain GSM, the number of GPRS timeslots enabled, the coding scheme used, the presence of EDGE and it's different revisions) and so on.
This is still not enough, you have to consider if your GSM network is on 900 or 1800 band, and you have to take in account different performances if the BTS (or nodeb) are built by one producer rather than another, and its firmware revision.
All in all you can compare the performance only if you are living in the same place and you are using the same provider.
Just for example, my Milestone (with it's intitial FW) was lasting in about 6h if used on a Vodafone network (optimal reception, high speed network), but was lasting in more than 24h if used on the Three network (average reception, older HSDPA protocol).
Same as above, years ago, my P800 (a 2G only phone) was lasting in 3/4 days with Vodafone, a mere day with Wind
battery issue is solved but im curious what is that module SL4
because thats the only thing they changed (reset) while my x2 was on service
