Wi Fi HELP - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario General

Im trying to connect to the internet solet via Wi Fi.. and im having a really hard time. This problem probably has already been addressed but after an hour of searching I just want the answer!! please reply

what type of problems are you having? If you give us moer details we might be able to help.

I am having problems with my wifi also. My problem is when I go to connect using PIE, I get a message stating "The page cannot be displayed or downloaded because the connection was lost. Check the connection and try again later". When I view the wifi settings everything looks fine. I am connected to my home network with good signal strength.
I tried using a suggestion on another forum about increasing the wifi power setting to "best performance", but that didn't work either. (I am using Linksys router wrt54g). I am also using the t-mobile 2.26 ROM.
Oh, sorry if I took over the thread. But I need help also.
Thanks.

did either of you go into the connections and change it to My ISP?
settings > connections > connections > advanced > Select Networks > My Isp

shogunmark, you are a lifesaver! Thank you so much!
I was using the sda before the mda, so I wasn't used to having to change those settings - it was automatic (switching between wifi and gprs).
Thanks again.

excellent, glad to hear that it worked out for you

yes i have changed my connections to My Isp. Then it tries to connect via some weird Cingular telephone number.

Try editing the connection "myisp". make sure that "cingular gprs" is selection. Having "auto pick" and "CSD cingular" has always created problems for me.

Wi-Fi Problem with MDA!

I just bought the new T-Mobile (USA) MDA a couple days ago, a version of the HTC Wizard.
I have been able to connect with GPRS/EDGE, and seem to be getting EDGE speed, which is nice (my first EDGE phone).
However, no such luck with Wi-fi.
At my house, I can easily connect, at all times, with a few different wi-fi networks, with my wi-fi enabled laptop, and with my older PPC--an IPAQ 2210, with Spectec SDIO Wi-Fi card, can browse the web via Wi-Fi, etc.
The MDA does connect to Wi-FI, appears to be connected to it. (After turning it on in Connection Manager, of course.) But I cannot access any web sites with it. On trying to do so with PIE, I always get the error message:
"The page cannot be displayed or downloaded because the connection was lost, Check the connection and try again later."
I have not once been able to access one web site via Wi-Fi, with the MDA.
Can anyone help with this?
Thank you.
I ahve the same problem and have not figured out how to solve this...
Can anyone help us?
same problem here, also with t-mobile as provider. can it be a problem related to t-mobile???

I have exactly the same problem
I guess you could try going under "Settings" "Connections" "Network Card" and make sure your network card is set to connect to "The Internet"
Select your wireless card and then make sure the drop down says "The Internet" and hit ok.
Also, make sure your GPRS Connection settings aren't setup to use T-Mobile's proxy. When your gprs is setup to use a proxy for web browsing, PIE will attempt to use the proxy with any connection. And by proxy, I'm not talking about an APN or anything.
Are you running security on your router? If so try shutting it off to test or try to connect to someone elses WiFi network to test.

I spoke with a TMob customer service rep about this a couple weeks ago, and this is basically what he told me to do. A T-Mobile HotSpot (Starbucks, etc) should work without making any changes. But if you want to use your own WiFi connection, you have to do the following:
Start Menu -> Settings -> Connections Tab -> Connections Icon
Select Advanced Tab -> Select Networks
Change first dropdown to "My Work Network".
Click OK, OK.
Then when you want to roam with GPRS/EDGE again, you have to change it back to "T-Mobile GPRS".
Very annoying to say the least. If anyone knows a better way to do this, I'd love to hear about it.
This works for me:
Start Menu -> Settings -> Connections Tab -> Connections Icon
Select Advanced Tab -> Select Networks
Change the first dropdown to My Work Network
Change the second dropdown to T-Mobile GPRS
Make sure My Work Network is set to connect to the internet, but has NO proxy settings.
Make sure T-Mobile GRPS is set to connect to the internet, but HAS proxy settings.
Magic!
frycow, you rock!!
That worked perfectly!! I hated that I had to keep switching networks whenever I wanted to go online via GPRS or wifi!!
Thanks!!!
frycow,
wow. that sounds great. but I can't get it working. could you take a couple minutes to walk me (and I'm sure others too) through your exact settings? especially the proxy settings.
thanks!
frycow is a freakin champ....that did the trick!! I've been WAITING to get this working!!
AHHHH, AND IT FINALLY GOT MY POCKET MSN TO START WORKING TOO!!!! Still doesn't work on GPRS, but it certainly works on Wi-Fi!! I suppose the last thing would be to get it working on both!! regardless, this is SWEET!!
I canĀ“t get it working
When I Change the first dropdown to My Work Network and after that tryn to sync without having wifi enabled, the device does not connect with GPRS..., solutions...
frycow, hazchem, djswivel:
Could one of you help out Paltkugen and I? Both of us can't get it working. If you could let us know the specific settings, including the proxy settings, I would really appreciate it. Its so frustrating to know it works for some people, but not being able to get it going.
Thanks!
I did EXACTLY what fry posted....follow this carefully
Start Menu -> Settings -> Connections Tab -> Connections Icon
Select Advanced Tab -> Select Networks
Change the first dropdown to My Work Network
Change the second dropdown to T-Mobile GPRS
Click Edit on the My Work Network dropdown -> Proxy Settings Tab
Check the first box (This network connects to the internet), but NOT the second (This network uses a proxy server to connect to the internet)
Now do the same for the T-Mobile GRPS settins in the edit menu, only check both boxes this time. Then type in 216.155.165.50 as the proxy server. From there you should be good.

That is exactly what I did too. Just tried it again and I can't use GPRS to surf. I have Wifi turned off. GPRS is not connected. I open PIE and go to some URL (google.com). GPRS starts connecting and successfully connects to T-Mobile GPRS.
Then, for about 30-60 seconds, the status bar says "Locating". Then an alert pops up that says "The page cannot be displayed or downloaded because the connection was lost. Check the connection and try again later."
Next, I turn on WiFi. It conects to my local WiFi network. It is still connected to T-Mobile GPRS too. I go back to PIE. As soon as I try to goto a URL, the GPRS connection drops, and again it says "Locating..." for a while. Then the same alert pops up again.
So now that GPRS isn't connected and just WiFi, I try going to the URL again. Same results.
Next I try turning off WiFi. Now there are no connections. I restart WiFi and there is just a WiFi connection. Same results in PIE.
I thought maybe the proxy is the problem, so I turned off the proxy in GPRS. When I do this, the checkbox "This network connects to the internet" won't stay checked. Even if I check it and click ok, when I go back it is unchecked. And when I did this, I couldn't even connect with GPRS. And with WiFi on, it would connect to Wifi, but going to a page would immediately pop up an alert that says "Cannot Connect with current connection settings. To change you connection settings, tap Settings."
I added the proxy back in and then tried changing the GPRS access point name from wap.voicestream.com to internet2.voicestream.com and internet3.voicestream.com. internet2 wouldn't even make a connection, but internet3 did. however, i still couldn't locate pages in PIE. So I changed it back to wap. I think my unlimited GPRS plan is configured the VPN way, so I remember having to use internet2 or internet3 in the past.
Could the proxy server not be working right for me? Is it possible that I cannot locate the proxy because I'm configured in a non-standard way (with a different access point - internet3) than most?
I think I'll call tmo and see if I can get changed to the regular AP (wap). I'm not using VPN stuff right now anyway. If anyone has other ideas, please let me know.
Thanks again!
I think i have a work around. but involes changing it back and forth when switching btwn wifi and gprs..
created two connections.
one with proxy and one without.
im only able to surf gprs with proxy.
when connecting via GPRS set both networks to connect to PROXY.
when using WiFi, set both networks to connect using NOPROXY.
that should work. at least it worked for me. tried only 2 pages and it loaded for both. GPRS used myvoicestream and wifi google.

Earlier today I had been trying to get VM Net Browser or Resco File Explorer to work, and they *were* working, albeit very sporadically. Sometimes I could see whole windows network complete with shared files and directories, other times I could browse to my computer and it wouldn't show anything as being shared. Looking for a solution, i found this thread.
I followed the recommendations of the previous posts and got exactly the same results as yowzator, including the weird thing with the "This network connects to the internet" checkbox unchecking. My GPRS access point is also named wap.voicestream.com - not sure if that matters.
However, I know that I was having at least partial wi-fi success before trying this fix or I wouldn't be able to have seen my home network. So I gave up on this fix and put everything back to the default - GPRS for programs that automatically connect to the internet, no proxy, and My Work Network for programs that automatically connect toa private network, with "This network connects to the internet" unchecked because it's impossible to check it and expect it to stay checked.
I tried surfing around to a few pages with wifi only (connections shows me connected to my network, I turned off the phone icon in the comm settings, and tapping on the connectivity icon on the taskbar didn't have GPRS listed) and amazingly, some of them worked - though the "locating" process seemed to take a while, they sometimes seemed to load faster than with GPRS (especially if I let my MDA go to sleep and then turn it back on again).
And then they don't work again, without me doing anything. So I don't think the fix we've been trying is a true fix to the problem - if it was then then pages would *never* load with the proxy disabled. Right?
I've been wondering if the "modem" tab under My Work Network is supposed to be blank . . . even if it's using wifi it seems like a poor UI design to not have a checkbox or something saying "this connection is for wifi and not dialup".
I am using the 2.17 ROM update. My wireless router is a D-link DI-624 extreme g. I'm using WEP encryption.
I am crying . . . tears . . . of confusion.
SOLUTION!?
This works for me (suggested in another thread):
1. Add the following to the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\COMM\TIACXWLN1\PARMS:
DWORD dot11SupportedRateMaskG=8
(Note that there is already a key in the registry called "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\COMM\TIACXWLN1\PARMS: DWORD dot11SupportedRateMask=1" - you should leave this alone)
2. Do a soft reset.
3. Go to your wi-fi settings -> Power Mode tab -> Best Performance (without this step it didn't work for me)
4. Turn on wi-fi and connect to anything in internet explorer. It should seem blazing fast compared to GPRS.
Note that this assumes you haven't done any of the fixes in this thread. That is to say, leave it with GPRS for programs that automatically connect to the internet (with no proxy), and My Work Network for programs that automatically connect to a private network, with "This network connects to the internet" unchecked because it's impossible to check it and expect it to stay checked.
So far (for a few minutes anyway) this is working for me! Even Resco File Explorer seems to mostly work - I can map my PC's shared folders and see my stuff reliably, as far as I can tell. VM Net Browser is still wonky though.
The thread this solution comes from is http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=38898&start=0&postdays=0&postorder=asc
Hi,
tried that solution
(I have a thread below)
still falls over on "locate".
I have no home network so I have never got anything working - connects fine on a public hotspot, but as I say, fails on locate.
I've had enough - may either phone T-mobile pay CS - something I really don't want to do out of principle - or just send teh phone back.
any new info on this? can seem to get it to work.
i have configures it many ways as suggested above. only time i was able to browse on wifi was with no proxie was set up. i connect through another network, (the mda automatically hooks you up to all avalible networks) but that only lasted a few minutes.
is there even a chance i could someone at tmobile even help me??? anyone here call them and get got service/help with getting it to work?
thanks

WiFi connects but fails on "Locate"

Hi,
I've just got a T-Mobile Vario. It connects fine on GPRS and PIE navigates to web pages.
I then try to connect to a free WiFi hotspot (I have no home wifi network to test on).
It *connects* fine. However, when I try to navigate to a web page it hangs on the "Locate" message, then times out.
I have searched the forum and read similar problems but with home networks not public hotspots- for example:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=46118
I tried the solutions suggested there but with no luck. Has anyone had similar problems?
I *really* need to get WiFi working (by the end of the weekend hopefully) as thats what I got the device for in the first place.
I am a WiFi virgin so any pointers will help.
ipl 1.06

Cingular 8125 WiFi fails
I have the same results. My router assigns my device an IP address with WiFi on, but I get the message "...the connection was lost." whenever I try to surf internet. If anyone understands how to set it up, we'd appreciate instruction that works (I'd like a Cingular user if possible) but I would also like to learn what the settings mean. Anyone have a link to network setup information? I have a WiFi network in my home which works for my wife's laptop and my old PDA. This 8125 is bugging me.
working now...
OK, as soon as I posted and went back to the PDA the WiFi connection now works - gremlins again... I didn't change anything or even soft reset - it just connected. I wonder if it was because the GPRS connection ended... I'll try turning off my automatic e-mail checking and post again. BTW, I am using the suggestion of the first Network being "work - no proxy" and the second being "MediaNet - proxy"
Your problem doesn't seem the same as mine.
I have no home network.
My vario, on a public hotspot, always "connects" but always fails on "locate".
you need to make sure the connection is not using a proxy server.
go into settings
connections
then manage existing connections
untick the checkbox on the proxy settings tab that says this connection uses a proxy (or words to that effect)
now you should be able to connect to the network as long as their is no security in place to stop you.
good luck
R
Hi,
I have no "manage existing connections"
under settings->connections.
I go into connections which gives <tasks> and <Advanced> tabs
Under Advanced> I have <select networks>
This screen "Network Management" has two drop downs
1 states "Programs that automatically connect to the internet should connect using"
"T-Mobile Internet" is selected
If I edit and look at proxy settings it has:
"This network connects to the internet" ticked
the proxy server box is empty
If I edit the modem tab it has Cellular Line (GPRS) selected
Dropdown 2 has
Programs that automatically connect to a private network should connect using:
the dropdown is filled with "My Work Network"
By default the "connects to the internet" box is empty. I have filled this in previously with no luck.
Modem is empty as are all the other entries.
I have swapped the order of the dropdowns, I have made both "My Work network" and both "T-Mobile Internet" with no luck.
I have tried the suggestions on the thread I referenced above - again with no luck.
To repeat I can get the "connection" up. When I select the network it states connection is "good" yet when I try to surf to a page it craps out on the "Locate" message.
Is it failing to find a DNS server on the wifi link?
I'm just guessing as I know v little about WiFi as I have never used it before
TIA for any further contributions
I just wanted to say I have this same problem and have not been able to solve it yet. I can't tell whether to use GPRS while using Internet, or whether I should have the connection set to "Work" or "Internet" or what.
I have tried with 3 unprotected wireless networks already and have gotten the same results with each. I suspect it may be due to DNS. Hopefully it is not the phone itself.
Hi mat,
Well it can't be that you *must* use GPRS whilst surfing - thats what WIFI is for!
I suspect (no real evidence)T-Mobile have somehow crippled the OS to make it difficult to work out how to get free hotspot access working properly. Looking at their site they say CS do not "support" WIFI access problems - how convenient!!!!!
Although I am a WIFI virgin/idiot, I am not a *total* idiot and would have been able to get it working if it was completely straightforward.
To add ammunition to this opinion, I do not have a T-Zone account (I should have but it hasn't been set up correctly). Anyway I tried to connect though a t-zone and it worked straightaway presenting me with the login page. I could also download data - the terms and conditions.
However, obviously I couldn't surf to totally check it out as I couldn't login.
I wish someone would provide a definitive solution as it is really irritating me now!!!!!
Why would it be hanging on "locate"? I imagine it must be because it cannot look up the IP address through the free WIFI link. I made the same suggestion as you did earlier something to do with the DNS setup.
Thats as far as I can get!!!!!

There is a problem connecting to the GPRS service in your registered home network

Once I tried to connect the free wifi on Atlanta airport. Since then my ATT 8525 randomly displays this message "There is a problem connecting to the GPRS service in your registered home network.
Just FYI, I do not ATT internet subscription.
I can receive text messages and calls as usual but today when I tried to sync my phone with my laptop, it gave errors like make Outlook express as your default mail server.
I cannot sync my phone to my laptop which was possible until I started getting the GPRS messages.
Please help me.
Check your selected network and see by changing it to correct network settings. I am not sure if it is going to resolve your problem or not.
I'm having the same problem.
I do not have a GPRS service.
I do not need it because i use WIFI.
Can i make wifi my only data connection with the HD2?
thnx
go to settings>connections>connections
the touch manage connections and delete the default tmobile gprs setting by touching it and holding til delete come up.
Just fyi,
I was facing this problem, and iiodii's solution worked fine, or simply :
Go to settings > Connections > Connections > Advanced > Select Networks >
Check both options to 'My Work Network' or any network other than your Mobile provider connection.
An advise "Just for users who will reach this topic" (I did through Google )
This didn't work. I'm having the same problem: GPRS not working when I try to send/receive MMS, and it all started after I started using wifi. Should I flash the radio?
I have Hermes 200- two years ago I had the same problem-this is what I did: went to the WIKI and downloaded "network settings" for my phone (cab) and loaded directly to my phone, soft reseted and that was it. Savy!?!!
sorry to hear that.good luck to u .
Go to phone and then menu and then options and go to BAND, don't choose auto but chose GSM OR CDMA both of them. Hope it will help all of you.

WiFI how to make it

Please don't kill me but I want to know
HOW to make use WiFi instead of network on browsers and mail, once I connect?
once you connect you to a wifi network it should be just like using wifi on your computer.
a more specific question or example may allow someone to help you more.
The phone uses Wifi where possible by default. However as my push mail is running over the Vodafone Internet APN I have found some occasions where my browsing session wasn't using Wifi.
So I created my own homepage which tells me the IP address I'm on and works out if it's my wifi router or the Vodafone Internet. It also has all my bookmarks, which is a better than the built in solution from Opera.
If you aren't using the GPRS all day, try NoData which can block all GPRS usage.

Aha, the old friend from MySymbian
Well I'll try that NoData but good to hear X1 wants to use it by default (when connected). I don't use any push messages.
It's a Vodafone ROM thing. if you flash to another ROM it will work fine.
WiFi problem
No man, I have a Vodafone UK Xperia. problem with Wifi initially, then I've ROM it to the generic UK version...now it connects to Wifi but I cannot browse anything with it. The pages don't load and status keeps saying 'loading...' but nothing happens and after a min or so, a message saying that I have to check my internet connection...not connected!

Then you have your Wifi settings incorrect.
How come u say my Wifi settings are incorrect? How can I correct it? In wat way? my laptop etc connects to the Wifi fine...and the phone as well...but it just that the phone doesnt seem to load anything from internet when I'm connected.
First Check if you used the correct Key for your wifi if thats fine then ....
I've never had this problem with the xperia but I have had with other windows mobile phones it was probable because of older versions of windows mobile, if wifi is connected fine go to Settings -> Connections Tab -> Connections -> Advanced Tab -> Select Networks, then select My Network for both drop downs.

Because you are unable to surf the internet, which points to either the settings entered incorrectly (normally when using WEP) or your router needs a firmware upgrade.
Ok here's a complete answer to my question
HOW to make X1 to connect to WiFi ONLY:
Install NoData (thanks for tip!!!)
Turn this on to NOT transfer any network data.
All the browsers I tried (Opera Mini 4.2, Opera Mobile 9.5)
automatically connect by WiFi, so it's great.
Email NOT. But it's enough to
go to email account settings and in advanced server settings instead of your providers network
choose "The Internet".
Violaa, the email account also connects through WiFi.
Hope that helps somebody
Where do i get no data please
There's one topic here called no data cab file!!
Just find it and it's there!
i got problems with my fritzbox 7270, too.
but i solved it.
just set the 802 adaptor manual to your wifi settings.
free ip adress in your segment, gateway, nameserver.
i think its a dhcp problem, with my 7270.

internet ok, wifi ok but i cant surf the internet

What exactly is the problem? When connected via wifi, you are unable to surf the net, update stock & weather? Or is it just internet access?
Go to Settings > connections > wifi > wireless networks > network adaptors and set 'My network cards connects to' to 'the internet'
Would also change Settings > connections > wifi > advanced > power mode and set this at best performance
Let me know if this works
Is the problem with just surfing the internet, or no internet at all? You can try to update the weather and/or stocks, just to see if the problem is with the connectivity (in which case you should try to follow the previous advice) or with the browser itself (for example with Black Perl ROM the first time you open Opera, there is a problem with rendering of the page, so you have to close it and reopen again).

Are you connected to active sync or wmdc while you are trying to access the net (i.e. do you have your phone plugged into you pc)?
Check |START|SETTINGS|CONNECTIONS|USB To PC| and make sure you have "Enable advanced network functionality" checked.
If all else fails, soft reset, if that fails... hard reset
If in Internet explorer is ok then Check opera:config for a wrong proxi !
(opera keep setings from last conections)

Check |START|SETTINGS|CONNECTIONS|USB To PC| and make sure you have "Enable advanced network functionality" checked.
If all else fails, soft reset, if that fails... hard reset

my hd wasnt connected to pc... i even tried to connect using my 3g...
the 3g is connected but still cant browse the internet... i dont think theres a problem with my opera... since i tried to update the weather it appears the same errors..
I had this problem today - wifi connected but opera and weather updates not working.
I selected
Start->Settings->Connections(tab)->Connections(icon)->Advanced->Select Networks
and set "Programs that automatically connect to the Internet should connect using:" = "My Work Network" (was "Orange Internet").
This worked fine and I can now surf and download. I don't know if it will affect my 3g connection yet but I will try it later.
install schaps advanced config and disable "Proxy Auto Detection" in Internet Explorer section
Is your problem similar to this?

Sorry for not having the solution, just trying to determin what would be the cause.
Which firmware do you have?
perhaps it will be easier to change it directly in the registry.
one can see that this is not relevant to internet explorer only.
Code:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings]
"EnableAutoDetect"=dword:00000000

Thanks, this solution worked for me as well. Wifi and 3g both work with "My Work Network"
