Sure it is - via a Wi-Fi P2P network (unfortunately, you won't be able to do the same via BT as the MS BT stack doesn't support PAN).
Please read my Wi-Fi p2p article and, also my remote controller & remote, IP-based access-related remarks & articles in my blog (for example, http://www.pocketpcmag.com/blogs/index.php?blog=3&p=514&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1 ).

Some people may have ported the Widcomm BT stack to the Wizard - I should check it out some day.
Let's hope for others to chime in - hope they know more of possible Widcomm BT stack ports.
I haven't tried it myself but I think it will work through activesync.
So if you can use BT for activesync then bobs your uncle
Don't quote me on it though

WM6 PDAViet3, Bluetooth, ActiveSync 4.5, soti5.07
Does anyone experience connection problems with Soti Pocket Controler Professional 5.07 build 966, WM6 PDAViet3, ActiveSync 4.5 via bluetooth?
I have been trying to connect with no success. The problem is there only when trying to connect(Activesync, DHCP etc..) with Bluetooth. Anyone?
Soti Pocket Pro Rapi.dll error with Active Sync 4.5
I just installed Active Sync.4.5 and I sue Soti Pocket Professional 5.07 build 966. Now Soti wont work and I get a RAPI.DLL error? Any thoughts. I am going to revert back but was curious to see if any one had a fix?

Yes it is possbile. You need to connect via bluetooth activesync. It might depend on what bluetooth your laptop uses. Mine is Belkin and that works great.

any special setup
Hi i am connected via bluetooth activesync but still can't access the ADSL Internet that my PC is using. do i need to make any changes any where.
thanks
can u be kind enough to let me know the procedures for using bluetooth and activesync...i have tried but failed.
thanx
it took me a whole day work to get it work and at the end i discover 2 things.
1. We have to read manuals carefull and follow instalation instructions for bluetooth software and driver .
2. to activate activeSync simply go to you XDA II and select ActiveSync from start --> activeSync and then go to tools and select connect via Bluetooth.
thats it, now how can i make it access internet using ActiveSync , i have no IDEA
check if there is a V before PASS-TROUGH ( in activesync )
Hi what do you mean by a V before PASS-TROUGH!! , i have selected in RULES to use internet and i checked "open active synch when my mobile connect"
After a lot of try and error, I have finally managed to activesync over bt using the provided MS BT stack and the bt tools. Currently the connection is very unstable and it can dicsonnect seconds after connecting or sometimes after about 15 minutes. What is the range of the bt on the xda 2 and will the situation improve if I get a 100m range usb dongle for my pc?

The Bluetooth radio on the XDA II is class 2. This means that its range is about 10 meters (or up to 30 meters). You can't extend the range even if you use a class 1 (100-meter range) Bluetooth dongle. I've already tried that.
Slightly off topic, I appologise...
Can any person suggest a good USB Bluetooth device with which XDA II with Active Sync?
Thanks, Ben.

I use a Billionton Class 1 Bluetooth USB dongle.
One of these:

If it works well with the XDA, that's enough for me, thanks.

illwill, can you tell me how you managed to get activesync to work over bluetooth? I cant get it to do anything, a step by step would be very helpful for myself and others. Thank you.
I use a Sitecom class I (100m) BT usb dongle and managed to get Activesync to work with my MDA II over bt connection after installing the wonderful BT Tools from Tobias Waldvogel:

You could use Pocket Bluetooth Tools (http://bluetooth.i-networx.de/index_e.html).
It's free, works like a charm and it's got a guide too. The only trick my friend had a problem with, was setting up the correct COM port on the PC in PC's bluetooth settings.
have fun, let me know if you need more help.
AS over BT
Delete your pc from bonded devices on your xda II if you have it bonded
Here is how I got my bluetooth to activesync with pc. Go into ActiveSync on pc and select File-> connection settings.
Make sure that "Allow serial cable or infrared...." is checked and you have put the COM port as the BT serial port.
On your xda, turn off Bluetooth and then turn it back on.
Go to Settings->System and select Bluetooth settings
Click on the start button to start BT Activesync. You will get a message that you need to set up a device that supports BT AS, XDA will search for devices and find your pc. After bonding pc, you will get a message stating that ActiveSync BT is now setup.
Open AS and select Tools -> Connect via BT (or something), and your pc will prompt you for authorisation.
*If it all works like mine then it will connect ok but the connection will drop out as soon as you try to do anything worth while like surfing the internet over BT or syncing AvantGo*
ilwill you the man. That worked a treat. I had just about given up until i read your post. Good work mate....

Well I have this problem....
my BT software (widcomm 1.4.2) insists on setting the com port as com 10 and above...re-installed several times...same thing....and of course Active sync does not even recognize com 10.....any thoughts
one more thing worth notinh...the widcom sites speaks of a BT stack for ppc phone edition and a dev kit for it....(which do support headset and handsfree in addition to the other profiles...) so any news on where this product stands where can we get it??

My Bluetooth dongle also uses the Widcomm software. But it assigned COM7 as the Bluetooth serial port. Did you assign a serial port to any Bluetooth profile besides the ActiveSync profile?
whenever I try to assign a port to any service...it is always greater than 10!!
can this be an XP thing??

No, I also use Windows XP.
I'm not sure about this but try this if it works. Launch the Windows Registry Editor (regedit.exe). Then navigate to the registry key "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Widcomm\BTConfig\Services". Under that key are several keys named "0001", "0002", "0003", and so on. Look for the key whose registry value "Name" is set to "ActiveSync". In that key, change the setting of registry value "ComPortNumber" to a number lower than 10 (like 9). Then restart your PC and see if that changes the Bluetooth serial port setting.
Thanks to the last chap who told me to use activesync to view web pages using bluetooth.. the problem is "How" to get it to do that.. I have a little bluetooth dongle on the pc but they don't seem to talk to each other even though they are bonded.. and precisely how do i view an internet page using bluetooth
Do you tyhink it may be a bluetooth compatiblilty issue.. I've heard that maybe a different dongle and driver may do the trick?
The Idiot's guide would be much appreciated!!!

Hi,
I downloaded the Bluetooth application ("fix") from here:
http://bluetooth.i-networx.de/index_e.html
Then Bluetooth works perfectly with my 3com PCMCIA card in the laptop.
I now only do ActiveSync via Bluetooth with one exception - when I want to send music via Windows Media to the Imate I have to use the cradle or cable because the bluetooth appears to the laptop as a serial link and the Windows Media does not support serial devices.
I can also use internet on the Imate via ActiveSync and bluetooth - although generally I stick to the laptop for that !
Regards, Dave
Thanks but unfortunately the fix doesn't bring up a web page anymore.. what is it that your suggested fix is fixing? AArrghhh! Can someone please come to the house and sort it out!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi again,
This bluetooth fix allows a simple connection from PC to Imate via ActiveSync and Bluetooth. It does not address internet issues.
Have you tried connecting the Imate/XDA2 to a PC with cable or cradle and then used Internet ?
It could be that your problem is not with Bluetooth - have you tried the Connection settings ? or, have you check the ActiveSync settings on the Imate.
Rgds, Dave
I probably understood your problem. You can't connect your Xda via ActiveSync via bluetooth.
First..assure the 2 Bluetooth devices are on discoverable mode.
Then go into your Pocket Pc START-Settings-System-Blueooth settings-tap to Bluetooth ActyveSync setup[start]
Select Discoverable mode and Tap in Bonded devices and NEW..
So..wait and Select your pc.
Then you will pair your pc with Pda.
Inserted the same code on 2 devices you probably can connect to ActiveSync via bluetooth.
Simply go in your Pocket pc,START-ActiveSync-Tools-Connect via bluetooth.
If this not help, try to set the right port on your PC ActiveSync-File-Connection Settings-COM1-2...etc..
Contact me if problems seems unsolved

My device ( see below ) is a Imate Jas Jar, the cable that connects has a mini usb to a normal usb connection for connection to PC ( with active sync).
I am soon to travel and the hotel rooms have broadband with the connection being a standard network cable. If I get a adapter for the normal usb to the standard network cable, will I get the INTERNET into my device.
Does my device have a network card like functionality on the end of the mini usb cable.
Please advise...
Never heard of that kind of rig,,, I travel with my O2 Exec and have always been able to hook up to my hotel highspeed via my wifi service in the O2.
Some hotels have USB connections at the hub for High speed so you should call the hotel and ask if they have a wifi hotspot or USB connection instead of the normal LAN cable connect.
The hotel that I am staying at have wifi in the lobby only.
No you can't. Your phone does not have USB host function on it. Get yourself a SD-WiFi
My god, whats SD Wifi ???
Or get yourself a wireless travel router, which is what I use. Works quite well for both the universal and laptops.
There are several models available, I show you this one (which I have) as an example:
http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Sate...241008&pagename=Linksys/Common/VisitorWrapper
The wireless travel router is the best suggestion.
The Universal already has WiFi, so no idea why someone suggested an SD WiFi card.
Nothing that connects via USB will work as the Universal does not support USB Host mode.
Most wireless routers for connection to a cat5 socket cable or dsl modem will also work, the are just not as small and neat as a travel router.

Why would you think that anyone with tornado A2DP experence would be reading a post on network connections in the universal forum, you might try looking for answers here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=285
What I did in the past was setup my notebook as an access-point (sorta). Since my notebook could accept CAT5, and has WiFi, what I did was connect CAT5 to notebook, enable "Internet Connection Sharing" on the wifi. Create a P2P (adhoc) connection with Universal -- and voila, internet access for Universal via WiFi within the room.

BTW, why don't you reflash your ROM with an AKU2.0 ROM so that you can have NATIVE A2DP support?
BTW, another vote for a travel router. It's pretty useless to look for a SD-based wired Ethernet card - I only know of CF-based ones. (And they suck too - they have REALLY bad power consumption)
My Question as i presumed it wud be was for BILLB
Hi
My question was addressed to BILLB and never meant for everyone in the forum, Gladly, we have nice minded people like you who have directed me to an available solution. Incidentally i upgraded my rom to AKU 3.2 and it supports A2DP Beautifully, but the sound is broken frequently, so am hunting at newwer grounds.

Thanx Minnesys...
I forgot to thank you for the direction..
I have a mini mac with bluetooth and wifi built in and i'm wondering how the heck I can make the Wizard connect via bluetooth and share the mac's internet connection cuz my PC doesn't have a BT adapter and i'd like to use the net w/o plugging it into USB.. all I get is "SERIAL PORT" connection and that doesn't do crap... any ideas anyone ?
BT networking is called BT PAN...the wizard still dont support bt pan...in AKU 3.2 u should have bt pan supported (i didnt tested it) but aku 3.2 is still unstable...
how about connecting using the wifi? or some sort of mac activesync? (i dunno if this even exists, i dont use mac)
in ur case the easier solution is to try to put ur mac in ap mode or something like that so the wizard can connect to it...dunno even if this is poossible in mac...

Unfortunately, it won't be usable for such purposes. I've thoroughly tested it (see my BT PAN-related articles) and it's way weaker than the Widcomm PAN implementation.
What are you talking about?
Why are you trying to use BT for internet connection? You do know that the wizard has wifi right?
Just go to System Preferences>Sharing>Internet and turn on internet sharing from ethernet through your airport card. If your mini connects through your airport card then you must have a wireless router already in which case you can just access that from the Wizard directly.
Yeah I can't do that i have no wireless router here lol.. i guess ill just put it in WIFI AP mode on the mac.. even though wifi owns my battery lol, thanks for the help
