Easiest way of accessing the net via home adsl with xdaII?

From another thread... i've just been told xdaII doesn't have Wi-fi as i first presumed.
Can someone suggest the best way to access the net through my home adsl router? Would bluetooth be my best bet?
Can you recommend specifically which equipment will work... since there are so many issues at the moment as to what works and what doesn't.

put i-mate in usb cradle, hook up cradle to PC. i-mate uses PC's network connection.
Outside of that you'll either be springing for a usb/bt dongle (which I haven't seen any posts of anyone using) or a WiFi SD card. Can't think of any other options off the top of my head.

As you have mentioned earlier, you have already wired up your whole home with wif-, and presumably have a wi-fi access point.
The best route would thereofre be to add a wi-fi card to your xda2, such as the Socket Wireless LAN (WiFi) SD Card. This will give you better speeds than bluetooth, and you will not have to worry about profiles etc.

I use a Belkin USB bluetooth dongle, and using the ActiveSync passthrough you can then browse the web on the XDA within the range of the dongle. You can get dongles with a 100m range, which should be plenty within a house.
Only trouble is, being ActiveSync, it it pot luck whether you can establish a link or not. Once you've established the link, it works quite well, though not flawlessly. It's also quite slow. Not as slow as GPRS, but not exactly snappy either. I don't know whether this is down to PIE, the bluetooth, or the ActiveSync. Most likely the latter.
Ideally, you'd use a bluetooth access point, but I'm not sure the XDA will work with that due to the absence of an appropriate protocol.

Wi-fi seems my best bet since usb seems to be incredibly slow at downlaoding a page.... thanks for the recommendations surur and graah.

I've got both BT dongle and WiFi sdio setup at home.
The BT is actually to a notebook which is WiFi'd to my ADSL to inet...
The WiFi is faster, but:
1. the BT actually gave me better range! (I got the 100m one from Belkin)
2. the WiFi is a pig ( P I G ) on the battery.
3. the WiFi takes up my SD porn-movies slot
if you setup activesync to only do the sync MANUALLY (you have to
tell it both on the PC and on the XDA to sync manually) then
establishing BT pass-thru is much easier/faster
The internet is kinda slow on the XDA, I think probably because
MS's pocket IE is just bad. I don't think the TCP/IP works correctly
or that it opens enough connections in parallel to get the GIF's
and stuff. The network/BT/WiFi and the hardware (128Mb/400Mhz)
is much faster than what IE/Microsoft gives us.
But what do you expect from the 640Kb is enough company, that
did it again with 32 ****ing processes?!

thanks mgolanlan... does this mean the net speed is going to be on par with the usb speed? - usb was incredibly slow ... if so i may as well not bother with net access all together

usb1.1 is 12Mb /sec
if your ADSL is faster then that you are pretty lucky

Widcom stack bonus! Wireless Networking(OT- not GPS related)

Hi all,
I've been following the Widcom port across to the XDA-II, not because I want to attach a GPS, but because of the much expanded feature set.
I installed the BluetoothGPS.zip file, then activated all the new services offered by the phone.
I have a Belkin F8T001 USB Adapter in my broadband PC. I want to use BT to surf the net from the XDA without paying O2. Trouble is, my Belkin doesn't provide an Activesync Profile, so it can't be done. Until now, that is.
Belkin USB adapters offer a 'Network Access' service. The Widcom stack now allows the XDA to wireless network with my PC, map drives with Resco Explorer, surf the net without the bother of Activesync, oh, and Activesync over BT Wireless LAN if you like. The PC acts very much like a WiFi access point.
Another excellent bonus is the ability to browse the PDA with the BT 'File Transfer' Service. This is easier than browsing through Activesync, as you can open picture files directly without having to transfer them to the PC first.

Thanks for the post on Net access - It's not as easy as it looks (having spent AGES getting iPAQs working with Bluetooth Dongles (BTW: You DO need 1.3.2.7 of the Widcomm Stack on XP to make PAN connections work!!!
My question is:
Has anyone managed to work out how to get PAN or LAP Network Bluetooth access going on an XDA II??
I can easily get a PAN network access connection going on an iPAQ 5550 (with the identical Widcomm stack version) - On the XDA II with the Widcomm stack installed, it defaults to a LAP profile... (Using BT Null Modem). I can't get this method working with internet access.
If I connect XP to the iMate, then the PAN driver is used on the PDA - BUT I can't get any traffic through (this is the same on the iPaq and the iMate).
Anyone got any clues / hints for me, please?!?! (ROM versions etc are latest).

Hi,
I'd same the problem, but since I enabled service Personal Network Sever, then at PC side connect to Xda II, it's working, I can ping from / to Xda II.
(enable service by start > setting > bluetooth > from File Transfer to Personal Network Server, I checked them all)
But it's problem to connect via Xda II to PC, then I restarted PC and PPC and make new shortcut of PC Network Access.
Now it's working I can use Resco file explorer to map driver of PC share folder and get access to file. But it's seem unstable because it's hang sometime.
ps: Thank so much to the great person who made bluetoothgps.zip.

I'd very much like to get hold of this file as well, same problem - user/pass doesn't work anymore.

That's a shame, it used to be on ftp://hydrosphere:[email protected]/ but it's gone now. I've obviously got it, but I'm damned if I'm hosting it as it's 'unlicenced software'.

As acurtis007 pointed out, it's not easy to do this even on the correct PDA. If you do get hold of the Widcom stack, you need to understand networking and a little voodoo to surf the net.
One advantage is that the BT Dongle in your PC becomes like an access point. You no longer have to set up an Activesync Partnership, so a PC can be logged in as anybody, and any PDA(s) can surf.
Here's the way to get Surfing over BT using proper IP NAT:
Your XP PC
Your installed BT Dongle should offer a Local Service called 'Network Access'. This should be started automatically, and creates a 'Bluetooth LAN Access Server' interface in your Network Connections. This is the important bit: Activate 'Internet Connection Sharing' on your LAN Card. Select the Bluetooth LAN Adapter as the Interface you want to share with. If you don't have a LAN card, then share whatever interface connects to the Internet.
If your LAN Card already has an ip address that starts with 192.168.0. then you're out of luck. You'll have to change the entire setup of your LAN to another Subnet. I chose 192.168.50.x, which is fine.
If you have correctly activated ICS, your BT LAN Interface will have the IP address 192.168.0.1, and your Internet device will have a hand under it's Icon.
You're XP PC is now ready to accept Bluetooth surfers - both of the Internet and your LAN.
The XDA-II
Bung in the Widcom Stack
Run the Lovely new Bluetooth Connection Wizard and Explore. You'll see a PC icon appear, tap it. You should be offered a range of services, depending on what make of BT Dongle you have. Select 'Network Access'. A Shortcut appears. Hold the stylus down on the Icon, and select Connect from the pop-up. You will have to do the PIN thing as you connect the 2 devices. The XDA's Bluetooth Null Modem then connects to the PC, and hello broadband.
The stack is very stable. I've been using it for 2 weeks now every day for both surfing and file transfers.
It's not perfect - beware
This is a hack, and therefore does not operate entirely correctly:
You will ALWAYS get an error message when first initialising the new stack. I'm used to it: Start Bluetooth - it fails; Start Bluetooth again - it runs. This happens every time, and I just live with it. Once it's up, I can surf till the battery dies.
You will need to reset your XDA-II's Connection Settings (Advanced - Select Networks) back to 'My ISP' where it says 'Programs that....Internet..'
Others on this forum have reported that the XDA's sound gets disabled when you uninstall the Widcom cab file. I haven't had cause to do this as I'm 100% keeping it. This is the advice I've seen posted:
"Uninstalling Widcom Stack
If you have the Widcom stack go to the WIDCOM BT-manager Audio gateway tab and Disable this before uninstalling. Sound should then remain actve."
So there you go - it works a treat.

If you want a bit of fun, try this:
Get yer Widcom network access up 'n' running
Put a TV Tuner Card into the PC with the BT Dongle attached, and hook up your Sky Box to the TV Card.
Download the free 'Microsoft Media Encoder'
Using Media Encoder, Run a Live Broadcast, and select 'Pocket PC Widescreen' as the target audience. Your Sky Box output (or whatever) is now being converted into a TCP/IP Stream at the sort of data rate your XDA can handle.
To watch Sky on your XDA all round the house, run Media Player on your XDA and enter the url http://192.168.0.1:80 (assuming you're connected via BT). You can also do this with a Webcam, and remotely monitor it full screen on your PDA.

As the XDA connects to the LAN over a BT null modem. It seems to be quite slow.
Is this due to the settings of the modem restricted to 11500 baud rate limit for the hardware?
Whilst i am at it. let me throw this in the works.
The XDAII connects via BT to a PC on the network. I can browse the network from the PC. But i can only browse the files on the PC that i am directly connected to via BT from the XDA as well as access the internet. Is this normal?
IP address is 192.168.0.1 on BT adapter. The LAN connection of the PC is 192.168.11.5 ( auto ip).
all other PCs on the network are in the 192.168.11.x range.
Any suggestions?

I found out that the speed networking over BT is slower than expected. Any others having problems for repaly MP3s on their XDA. I think the max speed over BT is 1MBit. Whith all protocol things you schould get min 500kBit. But I have problems playing MP3s with mor than 192kBit, The XDE "feels" very slow. - any ideas?

Oorbz: To conect to your home LAN you need to set up a Networking bridge (Because your network is devided in 2 segments). Using windows xp its included. Mark both network adapter and choose "Network bridge". After that you only configure the bridge and both networks are conected under one subnet mask. Sometimes BT-Adapters are not fully compatible with the network bridge. Then you need to do 2 little steps:
On the console type in:

You mentioned the Belkin BT adaptor. That is about 30 odd pounds. Are all BT adaptors the same? i.e. do they just implement some version of the protocol? Seems the Belkin one implements v1.1.

Bluetooth Access points

Hi folks, need some help here!
Got a bluetake x-bridge bluetooth access point and want to use it to connect my jam to my PC and surf the net, synchronise etc.
I've connected it to my router via a network cable, but the device itself doesn't come with any drivers.
The connection settings are on the page below

In the section marked console configuration, it talks about having a PC with Bluetooth function embedded in it, then talks about using a dongle to get the required drivers I guess. Does this mean I need to buy a dongle too?
Sorry for going on, but I'm a bit confused!!!!

It looks like a sort of standalone device. The only thing I can suggest is looking through the manual for the default IP it uses. You may be able to set it up through a web interface. The dongle is required for connecting to it, but you won't need to, because your PPC already has bluetooth.
Having said that, I really can't see why you bought a bluetooth access point which runs at less than 1Mbps, when for £20, you could have got a WiFi SDIO card, and connected at 11Mbps

The reason i bought it are
a) It was about £3 on ebay
b) I don't want to sacrifice storage space by having to use an SD wifi card

AFAIK the Jam does not support the LANP profile for BT networking. This is certainly the case for the Qtek S100. Anybody know different?

OSX BT Networking with Wizard

I have a mini mac with bluetooth and wifi built in and i'm wondering how the heck I can make the Wizard connect via bluetooth and share the mac's internet connection cuz my PC doesn't have a BT adapter and i'd like to use the net w/o plugging it into USB.. all I get is "SERIAL PORT" connection and that doesn't do crap... any ideas anyone ?

BT networking is called BT PAN...the wizard still dont support bt pan...in AKU 3.2 u should have bt pan supported (i didnt tested it) but aku 3.2 is still unstable...
how about connecting using the wifi? or some sort of mac activesync? (i dunno if this even exists, i dont use mac)
in ur case the easier solution is to try to put ur mac in ap mode or something like that so the wizard can connect to it...dunno even if this is poossible in mac...

Unfortunately, it won't be usable for such purposes. I've thoroughly tested it (see my BT PAN-related articles) and it's way weaker than the Widcomm PAN implementation.

Why are you trying to use BT for internet connection? You do know that the wizard has wifi right?
Just go to System Preferences>Sharing>Internet and turn on internet sharing from ethernet through your airport card. If your mini connects through your airport card then you must have a wireless router already in which case you can just access that from the Wizard directly.

Yeah I can't do that i have no wireless router here lol.. i guess ill just put it in WIFI AP mode on the mac.. even though wifi owns my battery lol, thanks for the help

I have got my HTC Wizard damaged. Actually till last night it was working fine, but now when I plug it into the USB, windows says that the USB device has malfunctioned etc. I search Google and everybody said that they tried hard-reset too with no luck.
So then I started searching Google to see if I could find a wi-fi USB dongle. I do have a Bluetooth dongle but since Wizard has got Bluetooth 1.1 (I guess!) so the transfer rate does not accede 15 Kbps. This is something annoying.
Now, my main question is, that if I order a Wi-Fi dongle, will I be able to transfer files from my PC into my HTC Wizard without any intermediate router or any other network or something? A Wifi dongle is cheap, $9.9 on Google Products. But a router isn't, its at least $250 or so.
Also, if somebody has some experience with this, please do post back the speeds at which you think the data will be transfered. I am only looking for an alternate to USB. If a Wi-Fi dongle could work, it would be great! I already hate wires. I love wireless stuff.
People with experience of trying this please write down any more details that you might have. What's the maximum range of a Wi-Fi network (usually).

You'll be hard pressed to get a response. I bought a Wfib router for $12 on ebay six months ago. Most of the developers here have wfi cards in their PCs, so using a usb port is kind of a waste/pretty antiquated.
Yes, you could connect with the wizard's wifi to your PC, and transfer files with Total Commander (all over the forum & google-able), but I'm guessing no one wants to try to tackle steering someone who can't/hasn't googled a decently priced router, or feels the need to use usb for wifi. You'd have to set up a windows network, too. Wifi, if you haven't used it, is a whole new can of worms. All the info you need is out there, but you'll have to find it.
My suggestion is to dust out your ppcs usb port gently with a soft, new toothbrush, uninstall ActiveSync on your PC, reboot & reinstall, reboot, and use a different usb port on your pc. If that doesn't work, I bet you could send it in to get repaired for about $40.

Actually, I do have some knowledge of computers and can usually fight back in situations that are confusing. I am not a Pocket PC/Windows CE programmer, but I know Visual C++ etc and many other languages.
I was just wanting to know if there could be an intermediate device that could be needed that's why I posted the question. And thank you very much for the response. It was very kind of you.
I have two more questions now:
1) If wifi is like LAN, then why would we need total commander to browser files? Can't there be a way to browse files like we do usually on LAN? I mean as far as I understand, total commander would perhaps only 'share' the files over lan? Correct?
2) At what speeds can we transfer data over wifi? And what is the usual range (in meters) of Wifi data transfer?

Have you tried another USB port? Or another cable?
An unstable USB hub gave me similair problems.

Wifi *is* wireless LAN.
Wifi equipment (cards, adapters, routers) are just a replacement for the ethernet cables etc., with a few software security measures so people don't "tap in" without an invitation.
There are a million different apps that browse files. Not too many apps do sharing without browsing anymore, so I've started using sharing to mean both (sharing + browsing). TC is free, it has a (wifi/LAN) network function under "extras," (aka "//") has a txt editor and as many other extras you would want in browser. I'm not sure what you mean by "the usual way." The built in File Explorer? I don't know, and don't care, if the WM6 browser has a network plugin, I have never used it (nor Resco or any of the others) since I found TC.
You should be able to connect directly from your Wizard to your PC's wifi if you can set up a TCPIP network and assign them (the wireless part only) IP addresses. You'll want to set up your PC to act as your router by allowing the PCs internet connection to be shared. (Internet in via wire, wireless out & back to the rest of your network, incuding devices.)
I've never tried it without a router, though, but it worked fine with the LynkSys one I got on ebay for $12.
The new/different cable is a good idea.
Forgive me, but this thread, if I kept answering questions, could eat a lot of my time. If you're still stuck on the Wifi thing, there are too many great sites explaining how it works.
