icq / IM - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario General

Which program do you use for IM on your windows mobile?
Are there any free ones? Which would you recommend?
I saw ShapeServics IM+ 4.22, commercial program, looks neat but overpriced.

hacked aim.
It's free and works excellant.

where can one download that?

is there anyway to make hacked aim less dependent on the stylus? i hate using that thing.

Hope this helps...
You can download hacked AIM from here.
And as for not using the sytlus as much, you can set the options to make the Enter key send the msg instead of inserting a line break.

Agile Messenger
You can try Agile Messenger... its free.

I heard that Agile Messenger is quite unstable, is that true?
Also I heard that some IM's disconnect GPRS connection when phone goes to stand-by (power off key pressed) is that true?

Not sure
Not sure really about the unstability factor, works pretty ok until now, doesn't disconnect, but haven't really tried being logged on for the whole day or long enough for it to go on stand-by. GPRS also stays on. Though it gives another kind of error of start-up (maybe because it doesn't like being on a memory card) that's when the prog is not running. Otherwise I am quite happy, give it a try.

1) Yes, Agile is not good
2) No, that is not true.

so...
So what is the best service then? :?

MSN Messenger battery and bandwidth usage

I got pocket MSN working and tested it out yesterday. it used over 700kb just to keep alive and nearly 2/3 of my battery just in 5 hours.
does agile messenger behave in as hungry a manner, or is there a way of being online without sucking my battery and bandwidth?
I really wanted to keep online with msn at work with this device-all help and advice appreciated as I have 40mb per month limit on this tariff from t-mobile.
How did you keep track of how much GPRS/UMTS kilobytes it was using?
Like you I'd like to have MSN permenantly connected when I'm at work, but fortunately I have a spare Mini-USB cable so it can be charging from work PC - using their electricity not mine  But the fact that it apparently uses so much battery is a bit concerning. Perhaps try getting one of those utils that can deliberately underclock your CPU?
the problem is if you are using UMTS. This ultra speed tecnology drains the battery. I you connect using GPRS you can leave MSN connected during one day or more without charging.

I am using SPB GPRS Monitor v 2.3.0 build 525 - it monitors by selecting a connection so it adds up both GPRS and UMTS and displays it.
Would using GPRS use less bandwidth? Also, does anyone know how to make it use GPRS instead of 3G?
In phone application, select menu options/phone/band and select gsm, althought I prefer to use UMTS and not to leave MSN connected.

I agree: I also prefer UMTS. Much faster with IE.
But gives me few hours of battery life with MSN open.
I need MSN connected. GPRS is, of course, fast enough for MSN.
Doing some tests with Agile now. Hate the fact that it has no look and feel of WM5 (IMHO)
I seem however to be too stupid to switch off the MSN sound, warning that a contacts becomes on line. Agile keeps its mouth shut.
Would love the ability for a chat request to send the beep to my headset. Loose a lot of chats because of this.

My new UK Exec doesn't have a GPRS monitor....
Edit: Sorry It's on the companion CD, which I haven't opened yet.
Ok, since my originalpost, here's what I get:
Agile on GPRS only (band selected in phone settings), uses <150k/working day to remain online. Battery isn't hit unduly, and all is well.
Speed is fine for MSN, also this setup is causing me to need to have a blow-out web session at the end of the month as I am too economical and am not using my 40MB.

Yep Joebongo, I have the same feeling.
And Agile does not bother me with a beep every time a new contact comes up. I am not able to switch that sound off on MSN messenger.
Also being able to select only online Contacts is an advantage.
I had Agile on the Nokia 9500 and it never came back after a visit in the metro without GPRS signal.
This rversion econnects nicely after having been in a twilight zone.
A pity though it does not have the look and feel of WM 2005. The program would do better if it would use the buttons. Also smaller, and nicer fonts would be nice.

MDA PRO patches\updates and issues.

Hi all,
Anyone know if T-mobile (UK) are preparing any patch\updates to the MDA PRO. I know that you can flash the device to restore the JASJAR but I'm not quite ready to turn it into a brick just yet.
What sort of fixes are available?
1) I have problems with bluetooth headsets disconnecting - I've tried a little test posted on another thread to try to fix this i.e.no auto power off.
2) Speed is an issue when I switch it on (why?)
3) Icons vanish from the Settings group...very annoying!
AND
Isn't it about time that Micorsoft started putting decent apps into Windows Mobile? The mail client is god damn awful and the file explorer is useless! yes, yes I know we can buy replacements like Resco but come on... Is there a Very good mail client for multiple mail accounts with rules?
If any1 has any solutions to the above or indeed some issues themselves then could they post them?
I really love the MDA PRO. I had an ipaq 2210 before and barely used it..I use this every day without fail and find it invaluable...Tomtom, web browsing, phone, email, games, movies, mp3... the list goes on..
Thanks

Ah, I cannot quote on the other issues, but this one I'm seeing as well. A reset will cure it, but it is definately annoying. Could be that this is some kind of memory issue...
Very annoying, though.

Pocket msn- whys it take so long to load?

Ive just reflashed to the latest Retail T-Mobile rom and pocket msn takes ages to load up. Around 1 minute an dthats if it connects?
Agile messenger seems to be a lot quicker overall but pocket msn will stay connected all day where as agile likes to disconnect when it can and doesnt auto reconnect.
is there a newer version of pocket msn or can u download it from some where as if there is a newer one that may help?
I have googled and searched to no avail, or at least not for WM5
Also on a side note i know there are loads of tweaks here, i had, had a lot of them installed. but i cant remember all of them! Anyone care to tell me the one that will really speed up my mda pro?

I've noticed that too and i'm using the latest qtek rom, there isn't an update for pocketmsn, so your just better off using IM+ or agile messenger
On my side both agile and pocket MSN take ages to connect. I prefer verichat but sadly it doesn't work with the operator with who I'm.

Selling Hermes!

As I have it for 2 months now I have decided to sell it anyway. Why you ask?
Because:
I use the phone for business and after that for private use and it is not quite what I have expected.
Sometimes, quite often infect, I can not answer the incoming call, it just freezes so I have to return calls, really stupid.
The MMS function works horrible, only every 3rd mms gets sent, and SMS is even worse, for only every 10th sms I get delivery report and my clients get more, like 3-5 sms from me.
Do not know why this is happening I really fell in love with Hermes, but some things just must work!
I will tray it maybe later, when the device will be faster, more stable, no more every day soft resets and certainly working for the money I paid for!
Hope yours is working right!
Cheers!

Sorry to hear that vid200. I won't be returning to this site for a few days, so can't check back for an answer, but have you tried upgrading/changing your ROM to a better and more stable one? I was quite upset with my TyTN until 2 weeks after I bought it, I decided to change the ROM to one that everyone was saying was good and stable. It's a simple process if u haven't done so, but do a search on it first.
Unless ur unit is faulty (and it just sounds like software issues), probably everything can be put absolutely allright with a little more time.
Best of luck.
How much?
How much of the Hermes you want to sell?
you know.. if you want to donate the phone i am accepting donations

You haven't any overnight freezing?
No need to delete MSMETADATA folder in storage card to have it seen again from windows media?
Good sound from bluetooth earphones?
No problem with bluetooth devices?
Full day use of push e-mail?
No problems with pocket outolook?
Please this is a developer forum, any opinion is valuable, but don't call us stupid!
"We are preparing a space ship to fly to the sun." This, of course was met with much ridicule. They were asked how they planned to deal with the sun's extreme heat. "Simple, we're going at night!"

What about Wi-fi ? ,how does is wokr ? properly? I have heard about cab. bug . If want use ,need download new one (fixed) from ERA site.
How does the "loose slider" in Vario II ?
How's bluetooth connection with PC ? (Vario II - internet modem)
P.S *sergiopi* I dont have problem only with "overnight freezing"...

1. no freezing. pda working all time on stable about >1 mounth.
2. Windows Media allways see files on phone and storage card.
3. I use Nokia HS-4W, working very fine, no problem with sound.
4. I use bluetooth for connecting with PC (files/activesync/etc), nokia hs-4w and navigo SirfStarIII GPS. Working stable/good.
I don't use push email service. Only sms/mms,all working good, exept as i say, some of testing apps (when i have wizard it's too) doing some bad and when i send sms it's deliver about 2-4 times to recipient. But when I hard reset i have stock pda with some base apps all good. I must have more time to test apps one by one, which doing this bad.
And next post:
No problem with WiFi, i use on work/home, in city, MC'donalds. I see on era page this cab for hmm "fix" something in wifi, but wifi working then i don't apply it. loose slider? don't see any problems. And i don't use vario as modem for PC.

I too am having perfect luck with my Hermes - it's been just as reliable as my Wizard was. No wi-fi locking up, no hand-off problems - it's been great!

I can also say the same thing. My device works well with the 1.35 SA Rom. Direct push all day about 50 to 75 emails each day, Sony HBH-DS970 bluetooth, 3g on all day..does not switch to gprs. Use bluetooth gps receiver a couple times per week, no problems. Play mp3 via bluetooth everyday from my sdcard, I have never had to delete the msmetadata folder. Receive phone calls 15 to 25 times per day, no issues. I also have spb pocket +, SPB Weather, SPB Diary, TCPMP, TOmTOm 5.21, Pocket Mechanic, SKtools, PpcWEbcam, IM+, Pocket Informant, MS One Note, VxUtils, PHM Regedit, Total Commander, and Sprite Backup without issues. But as for SMS/MMS.. i couldn't say.I don't use either except for about 5 daily alerts for weather and stock quotes. Don't really send any sms or mms, use email instead....

I agree, the only solution is to admit that there are hermes and Hermes, may be here many of us have the hermes release, the poor brother.
I have the same 1.35 SA Rom, no Sbp SW (may be it helps?) and I delete MSMETADATA twice a week.
I had to reset (due to freezing) every day. Seriously speaking, it could be a problem in SD driver. My storage card (and many of us) cards could be the faulty element of the chain
I'm a light user but the phone (Vario II) has been great for me. No problems whatsoever. Worked perfectly out of the box - and still does (two months later).
I switch it off every night (I don't want calls to disturb my sleep and even the guy behind the recent research into mobiles and tumours which said they were harmless said he wouldn't sleep beside his mobile phone!) and I think that this helps the device (i.e. one hard reset every day).
I find that I use my laptop much less these days because for the most common tasks (e-mail, checking presentations, finding information etc.) the Vario is adequate.

fring is now available for WM5 and WM6 !!!

For any of you who've been using a Nokia Symbian phone in recent months, you'll be happy to hear that fring has just released a WM5/WM6 fring client on a "preview" basis (beta of the beta - but not quite alpha testing).
fring was the one thing that was tempting me back to my Nokia E61 after finally "fixing" my TyTN. Basically, it's a combined VOIP/IM client that supports Skype, Google Talk, MSN and SIP as well as it's own community.
So those of you still stuck on WM5 or SJPhone forget about it. For those with any issues whatsoever with the WM6 VOIP client, forget about it. From my experience, fring SIP over 3G was even better than the built-in Nokia SIP client on the E61 over wifi in terms of call quality and availability (and that says a lot).
Does it have bugs, yes. Does it need improving, yes. But it's still the best thing out there. And even if you only use Skype Mobile, the RAM usage of fring is less than half (although call quality for Skype seems to be noticably lower than over SIP).
Anyway, just wanted to give you a heads up. Don't kill me if you hate it (and no, I'm in no way employed by them). To find it, just do a google search for fring or go to www.fring.com. Their Windows Mobile forum can be found here:
http://www.fring.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=11
I have problem to in stall it on my Hermes.... Can`t install it...
Fring - Hermes not supported
After registration i recieved the following message:
Your handset is not supported ... yet.
I'am eager to try fring, but we have to wait until the Hermes is supported.
somebody out there, running fring on a hermes?
Edit: Now i recieved my downloadlink, hmmm i will try later tonight back home and report back....
Tried this morning b4 seeing this post. It works quite well...
it works
I finally installed fring, and it works..... (just tried skype)
tried over GPRS&G3, and the phone wakes up from standby flawlessly
i also like those facts (bandwith usage):
fring for symbian phones consumes
~ 8MB for 60 min of mobile-VoIP call;
0.05 KB per Instant message
fring overhead ~ 10KB per hour connectivity
i hope those figures are equivalent to those on a WM5/WM6 device....
i kept getting a no internet connection error...
Any way to take the: "On mobile by www.fring.com" ??
Thanks for the heads up from Quist! I had just installed the new version of Skype only to have it crash everytime I make a call, just about to go back to the old version but will give Fring a go as just the fact that is not as memory hog like Skype appeals to me.
Warning to those on limited data plans
Be aware that fring automatically starts and attempts to log in every time the device is reset. Since I do a backup every morning at 2:00 AM using Spb Backup, which does a soft reset afterwards, my GPRS data usage skyrocketed. Not to mention that I was fast asleep at 2:00 AM, not ready to talk to any contacts at that time. Bad, bad fring! Bye, bye fring... I may try you again when you behave better!
I know that there is an easy way to stop it from doing this, but it is just the principle behind it. I hate programs that try to second guess my wishes and do things on my behalf without asking me whether that is OK or not. Besides, it should have the option of not using GPRS/3G for those of us on limited data plans (in my case, $30 per month for 7 MB of data download!)

DOH!!! How did I miss that one?! And guess what? There is also an option "Disable autostart". OK, now I feel like a fool. Maybe I should edit my original post to say "Make sure that you disable autostart if you don't want fring to log in at 2:00 AM after a soft reset, and make sure to disable GPRS/3G if on a limited data plan."
My apologies to the fring developers.

You have two (maybe three) options: The first is to use the built-in rear speaker (the default). The second option is to connect the wired headset that came with your device. The third option (I haven't tested this or know anyone that has got it to work, but according to Teksoft's web site it should work on the Hermes) is to use Bluemusic to redirect the rear speaker output to a Bluetooth headset.
There is no way to use the built-in front (ear) speaker as this is reserved for the phone hardware.
