MDA PRO patches\updates and issues. - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro General

Hi all,
Anyone know if T-mobile (UK) are preparing any patch\updates to the MDA PRO. I know that you can flash the device to restore the JASJAR but I'm not quite ready to turn it into a brick just yet.
What sort of fixes are available?
1) I have problems with bluetooth headsets disconnecting - I've tried a little test posted on another thread to try to fix this i.e.no auto power off.
2) Speed is an issue when I switch it on (why?)
3) Icons vanish from the Settings group...very annoying!
AND
Isn't it about time that Micorsoft started putting decent apps into Windows Mobile? The mail client is god damn awful and the file explorer is useless! yes, yes I know we can buy replacements like Resco but come on... Is there a Very good mail client for multiple mail accounts with rules?
If any1 has any solutions to the above or indeed some issues themselves then could they post them?
I really love the MDA PRO. I had an ipaq 2210 before and barely used it..I use this every day without fail and find it invaluable...Tomtom, web browsing, phone, email, games, movies, mp3... the list goes on..
Thanks
P

Ah, I cannot quote on the other issues, but this one I'm seeing as well. A reset will cure it, but it is definately annoying. Could be that this is some kind of memory issue...
Very annoying, though.

Active Sync Starts Unnecessarily

I dont' know if anybody has noticed this. After going thorugh Start / Settings / System Tab / Memory / running programs tab I stop all running progrrams. After sometimes I go to this place again and I find Active Sync as a running application even though I have not started it.
This did not happen on my old pda2k. Why does it happen on the universal JJ. Though it does not matter but yet it is taking some useful RAM and more so my urge to know why does it happen.
I will appreicate your views
Regards
I had this problem too
It is a pain in the ass as this causes skype not work with me. No solution yet.
M
Same here. I hope they fix things like this in Rom updates.
Try putting in dummy exchange server settings, disable all scheduled updates. That should stop AS autostarting.
Hi Efjay. Remember me? Anyway.. :? can you tell me/us how to go about doing this please  grovel, grovel!
Meanwhile, glad I was wrong about you!
Not to worry. Sussed it. Thanks for the tip though!
mackaby007, np glad you got it working, was at work and didn't see your reply til now on the way home. One-handed WM5 rocks.
Hi Efjay and All.
I'm not sure if this is related or not, but I had some problems whereby Active sync stopped working for me alltogether. Decided to download and install the unofficial 4.1 version of Activesync in conjunction with Magicbutton (and disabled the 'close' feature of Spb pocket plus 3) and presto, I'm no longer getting Activesync running in the background and all aplications close as they should!
If anyone is still experiencing problems in this area, give this a try and please post your experience back here.
Yeah your right Efjay, one handed operation in WM 5 rocks , but I'm still struggling to put the stylus down (I've become so used it, it's a new learning curve for me).
That's what you think
Try turning on wifi, and AS will come right back. I tried your solution and no luck. I tried faking the server and changing the schedule otpion, no luck, it just lives on....
No more annoying Activesync!!
Hi All. Just to report back, I,ve not had the recurring problem with Activesync poppin back anymore, at all, whatsoever!
Mikee: I tried as you said, and used wi-fi to surf the web, then watched a 2 hour movie on the JAsJar, then reconnected the wi-fi and listened to Resco Radio for 15 minutes, then checked memory status under settings. Nothing. No Activesync and nothing else running in memory. for me at least, the problem is gone and I'm not using any dummy server settings either! I'm typing this from the JasJar now and as we speak....just checked memory again. Nothing.
I don't know what to say, but I know you've had this problem a while now and all I can think is that it's either the software you have installed (possibly need a clean re-install of Activesync 4.1) like skype, which I uninstalled the minute I got my JasJar, or your Radio ROM update, which I have not done either.
Anyway, sorry I can't be of any more help to you, but please post your findings here if you snag the culprit.
For yor reference:

Hello All,
I don't think this problem is specfic to the JasJar, as I have the very same problem on my PDA2K. This only started happening after I upgraded to the windows of OS. So, I think it's more to do with W05 and or activesyne 04 which is needed to run W05. I have also found that this happen befor I even installed any apps on system, and I never had Skype so that can be ruled out as the culprit. Anyway, still trying to solve this bug, Have not recieved my Universal as yet...I'm waiting for the o2 version  Think the black rocks! Until then I have been keeping my eye on all the help from this section of the site...Just my 2cents

Things that make my JasJar USELESS

If you read my posts you'll see that I'm truly a proponent of working thro issues before lambasting a new product, and in fact you'll see that most issues raised are perfectly solvable with PocketPlus 3's close button and a few more apps. However, I'm now down to a few unresolved issues, and quite frankly I HAVE to tell the world NOT to buy this device until these issues are solved - probably by HTC. The bottom line is that there are not yet enough users to provide the critical mass to solve these issues, and one desperaely checks all the JJ forums daily only to find so few new posts it looks like it'll be many many months before the device is usable. What makes matters worse is that HTC don't seem to give a damn - we don't see them on the forums helping us early adopters AT ALL, their own forums do not even have a JJ/universal section - and you get fewer replies on there than you do here! It's shocking!:
1) BT unreliable: Turns itself off. Even when on, a call can come in and you cannot answer. Highly unpredictable so U generally miss the call whilst driving using your knees to steer, battling to open the JJ with one hand, and pumping your BT button with the other. I've battled with Gtec and Jabra BT devices - this IS a JJ issue!
2) GPRS/UMTS not always-on: The whole principle of GPRS was always-on, and UMTS brought us always-on broadband. Instead we have a situation where every app that wants to go on-line establishes a connection, does its thing, and drops the carrier when finishes. The best way to explain is how dial-up used to feel; too much hassle to bother booking those movie tickets on-line, yet once you had always-on broadband you didn't EVER queue at the moveis again! Broadband and wireless has always been more about always-on than about the access. Anton Tomov's GPRS Keep Alive does not solve this on the JJ.
3) No decent PIM: This is a 3-function convergent device; phone, on-line and PIM. The built-in PIM is SO awfully BAD that it defies comprehension. Psion Series 3's were way better than this! Yes, 1998 P3's! On WM2003 devices one merely used PI, AF or PB - or any other apps for that matter. Now none work on the JJ! NONE! You heard me - not a single @#$#@%one! The PI dev/CEO blames the JJ blank screens on a ROM bug and is not prepared to put any more effort into it. AF guys are not even starting to promise beta dates yet - and when they do they'll probably battle with the JJ too. All other calendar apps are blank or unusably slow (ie 2 mins to populate the screen).
4) Notification queue management: We ARE getting dups again! Pocket Mechanic is the only app that removes the sddeamon dup, and it does not have a feature to scan and clean up at midnight. This is going to build up to be an issue over time; we'll hit alarm failures, memory and speed issues, and general applicaiton problems all as per our old XDA's. For non-techie geeks, this alone is a reason to run away screaming!
5) No backup: OMG OMG OMG! This is such an appauling situation, that it is beyond my comprehension that M$ didn't run out to rectify it within 1 day of releasing WM5 over FOUR months ago!!!!! Now we have a device that we CANNOT back up. 1 hard reset and you start over. If you're faint-hearted you're simply not going to test new apps. If ur and early-adopter, then get ready for some hard resets (I've done 3 to date). Non-techie-hardcore-geeks will NOT NOT NOT tolerate this. Not for a single nano-second!
I am not a developer/experts on the PPC, but I have been on the bleading edge for some time. I had a perfectly smooth XDA, then XDAII from the day each came out, and I have used forums like this to solve ALL my problems. I also put hours and hours into it. ie I am not a housewife complaining cos I can;t find a menu item - the above issues are serious and a challenge for anyone with less capability than Buzz.
1) Can't help you there
2) Get the GPRS Always on application that can be found here if you search
3) 2 words for you. Pocket Informant
4) Can't believe this is still an issue
5) Use Sprite backup (best) or use the Backup feature of ACTIVESYNC.
NO NO NO!!
2) Anton Tomov's "GPRS always on" does not work fo this
3) PI fails on JJ within 2 days; blank calendar views which Alex (PI CEO) says is a ROM bug. Honestly if PI worked I would forgive ALL the rest; When it does work PI in VGA is AWESOME.
4) Queue dups definite - but I do concede that it may be a result of PocketPlus301, aeRepeatAlarms, TotalOmmander, or spb GPRS monitor. Havn't had time 2 test 1x1
5) Sprite themselves say it does not work on wm5, and you can find out the hard way by trying to restore. Ditto for sunnysoft. I agree that AS managed contacts etc, BUT I want to backup a state so I can debug apps
<submitted from my JJ - ClubiMate forums do NOT work from a JJ!!>
3, 4 and 5 are Windows Mobile 5 issues, not i-mate issues, so it's a little unfair IMO to reject the JasJar based on just issues 1 and 2. All WM5 devices have these problems. Two of those issues might be solved in future device releases by inlcuding Pocket Informant and a backup util (once one compatible with WM5 is released - there is none yet), but for now, there's not much that can be done while we wait for solutions.
Also, I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for MS to fix the duplicates issues. This has been a problem for a long time now. The JasJar is a great device, but we have to accept the fact that it will be a while before we can start using it (and other WM5 devices) to the level we had gotten used to with WM 2003 and 2003 SE.
You buy a new device AND a new OS.
A little patience please.
But the GPRS always on (MSN) is also urgent for me.

Disappearing features

Got myself an Exec after being a loyal symbian follower for many years.
Why oh why do some things keep disappearing :? :? :?
GPRS monitor has gone from the today page
The battery meter from the bottom bar has gone
My email accounts disappear after a soft reset.
WiFi settings keep losing my network key
'Phone pad' keyboard no longer appears
I have tried all of the install modes including the nasty o2 setup, currently running corp(0506).
If I soft reset before the o2 Cabs load, what will I loose?

am i the only one with these problems...?
I had similar issues with my first XDA Exec. I added the wireless connection and bluetooth device. The next day both would just disappear while the bluetooth was being used.
My current XDA Exec keeps corrupting files. Some of the files become unloadable, and others seem to loose the first character of the file name. This makes them not load when the device is reset.
I don't know what causes it, but I would be interested to find out if other people are having similar issues.
Regards,
William. D. Wensley
.
Same here too
This is no help  but I guess you guys must be in the minority, cos you're the first people I've seen mention these problems. Certainly my Exec remembers all its WiFi connection settings and my email accounts after soft resets. That would really be annoying.
For info about doing HardResets and selective CAB install, this thread might answer your questions.
I had similar problems on Qtek 9000.
Mail, Grps, Wifi and other settings got lost on every soft reset.
Uninstalled SPB Pocket Plus 3.0.4 and the problem is gone for now
And BAAAAAAM the problem is back again.
Once more everything is deleted
After this happends and you sync the device, do you also get a screen on the device asking for Exchange Password?
I hit 1234 and save password, then it syncs.
Using AC 4.1 on W2K all updates
Yes, I kept getting that issue on my first Exec. The ActiveSync synchronisation would stop until a non existent exchange password is entered.
Since I had my Exec replaced, I haven't had that issue.
Regards,
William
.
Well it aint AC that doe's this.
Cleared my device and started over without Syncing at all.
Soft Reset, Mail and Wlan gone and forgets user/pass for gprs.
It's on it's way back A.S.A.P
Hello there,
I have exactly the same problems as you describe. Have set the software back to factory, and the same problems appear.
I also have problems with BT, since no connections can be accepted....
Oooohhh no, even more people having this problem........
Ill prob. get the same device back and have this problem for a few month until a usable rom is releashed.
I dont know, could it bee the messaging software the causes this???
The same error has been reported by people upgrading BA to WM5.
error ActiveSync 4.1
There is a well documented error with ActiveSyns 4.x if you google for the ActiveSync error No. in my case something like 810041 you will see that an error code starting with an 8 points the fault at Outlook API Whatever that is) and there are several fixes and workarounds out there. in my case I was trying to sync with my laptop while it was not connected to the exchange server BUT there are several other things to try that get rid of the imaginary server.
Hope this helps
@toho
Yeaar your right, but it still dossen't explain the missing settings and accounts.
I lost mine without even syncing the device after a Hard Reset.
mail settings
well..2 days now and no loss
but it seems there is a wm5 problem ......
I have been careful to not disconnect the AS cable when a sync is in progress , so far...so good!
Today though, Skype has gone loopy!
The WiFi also fails to find my AP as well
Oh dear

Disappearing email accounts
I had 3 additional email accounts set up on my XDA Exec and was downloading and sending emails of through them ok via WIFI and GPRS. I was also syncing OK with my outlook on my desk top.
This morning I checked my mail through my WIFI conection (not via PC), and downloaded ok, although I seemed to loose a load of mail in one account. - Did'nt think much of it....and put it down to SPAM/VIRUS
Mid morning my old Oragne phone number was ported accross and I did a soft reset to "reinitiate" the phone etc. This works fine.
I did some Active Syncs ok as well.
THEN
I noted that all my other email accounts had gone - only Outlook remaining.
Later when I tried to Sync, I am now being asked for a MS Exchange username. I am not using exchange!
ALSO When I try and set up my old email accounts again, it says to use a different Account name as it already exisits, but plainly does'nt.
I have got rid of the 02 Bloatware and running in Corp install. Much faster and more stable - until now.
Any help on thes propbs appriciated.
Cheers
Ed (Mr)
Once again my 3 email accounts disappeard last night when down loading mail via my wifi connection.
They still appear on the today page, but cannot be accesed from it, or from messaging.
I now have 6 email accounts sitting somwhere on my xda exec and cannot get to them!
I have tried the reset method using psshutxp and it has not worked.
Not impressed with WM5's speed or stability compared to Palm which ran for years with hardly a hitch. It would'nt be so bad if there was a full backup/ restore facility so that hard resets could be used to sort it out.
I have had more resets, crashes and "bugs" in 2 weeks than in 3 years with a palm.
Can anyone help in getting my accounts back and restore my faith in WM5!? Please.
Ed

I've lost my phone pad as well. I don't appear to HAVE wi-fi on the new incarnation of this phone (not that I care, I never used it anyway), and once again, I can't get the phone to sync to my computer. I've never known a devide this unstable in all the years that I've been a certified gadget freak. It's heart-breaking, because the potential of this thing is amazing, but it JUST. DOESN'T. WORK.

Thank God my problem is a little less crucial than yours... Mine is the disappearing act of the soft keys "Menu" under Phone pad and the Contacts under the Start screen... It returns after I do a soft reset.. weird huh?
My email accounts just vanished too, and thats just a few mins after upgrading to the new O2 ROM
I'm getting the Exchange login too.
Any ideas?
Thanks

T-Mobile MDA

I just wanted to share my experiences with my new phone so far. The T-Mobile MDA (I'm not sure what version it is, it's the only one for sale at T-Mobile right now) is an awesome phone.
Just today I learned how to listen to streaming Sirius satellite radio, and I enjoyed the sounds of dance music by the pool from Windows Media Player on my phone.
The things I hate about this phone are the battery life (it's horrible, especially if I have Bluetooth on all day for my Bluetooth headset or am listening to streaming music), the bad Outlook syncing (I don't know how to set contacts in a group like Personal and ONLY sync Person contacts with my phone), the GPRS connection is bad... I guess when I don't have service it disconnects itself or something, I don't know how to always keep it alive. Also, downloading things from this forum from my phone doesn't work, it downloads the file download.php when it should be downloading the actual file instead.
Are there any solutions to my problems?
How to keep your GPRS alive
1) Go to the following registry entry:
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Comm\ConnMgr\Providers\{7C4B7A3 *****}\Connections\GPRS*****\"
2) Change "Always On" 0 into 1.
Thanks, is there anything wrong with keeping it on all the time?
Any battery saving enhancements or longer lasting batteries?
Battery
I am still looking into that GPRS issue myself.
I am not sure Kenny, but I read that there are two battery versions
for MDA vario. The standard version that is included with your device, and one that is a little bit more expensive, but will give you 50% extra power.
Please do a search on the net.
Tried this... my device will auto disconnect anyway.
JaySea,
Please try again,
It should work.
If it disconnects then something else is blocking it.
And even when it disconnects, it will connect by itself again,
about 2 minutes after disconnecting.

Do a soft reset, then see if it works...
I'm a total n00b with the T-Mo MDA so please excuse the question.
To view the registry entry must you connect to a PC and access from that or is this done in the phone itself?
Thanks.
Viewing the registry...
You can check/edit the registry on your handheld device with (for example) Resco Explorer or Total Commander...
okay, I'm confused. Is this the right version of Total Commander? MDA has an xscale proc, right?
Sjaakman: Thx so much for the tip.
My MDA has excellent battery life, much better than my previous iMate jam.
WiFi drains your battery life quickly. Set your backlight to the 2nd lowest level and make sure it is set to turn off after 1 min - if it's on all the time that takes a lot of power.
Maybe your battery is bad, see if you can get it replaced.
I'm a newbie in this subject on PDA phones, I just acquired the new MDS Vario T-mobile and don't know many of the great features that some of you mentioned here. If there is any way that I can find more information about the usage of the phone, please send me a PM to guide me through in my initiation. Every bit of advise will be much appreciated.

Battery Good overe here
My battery is good it last a long time for a device of this magnitude, also I foud a thread on here about increasing frame rate of the cam from 10 to 19, well i did this then enabled the frame rate counter, it stayed at 10.06 or so. But yesterday I turned the fram rate enabled thing on again now its showing 30-38 frams a sec for video and 15-16 for Pics!!! I dont know y, anyone experience this!!!
Web Access via Wifi or GPRS/Edge
Hello, I am new to TMobile and the MDA; I have had it for 4 days. For the life of me, no matter what I do I cannot get the phone to access the web. Here is what I have done:
1) At home, my PDA (ipaq 4705) and previous phone (imate Jam mini) both connect to my home wireless acess pont with no trouble. The MDA shows my access point in the Network Cards Settings, but it will not associate with it at all. The battery is fully charged, the mode is set to performance, woreless is on, the acess point shows up in the Settings Wireless status screens, but it will not associate. The access point is a b/g one and it is set to mixed mode.
2) I have set up the GPRS settings exactly as per TMobiles web site with the access point (wap.voicestream.com), the proxy, the 8080 port number etc. When I try to go to a website (any web site), the GPRS/Edge modem successfully connects, but Internet Explorer just indicates 'Locating' and I never see a web site,
I have phone service plus the full internet package at 29.95 per month.
Nothing on the phone makes me think it is broken. For those that may have all this working, is there some magic to it? I'm trying not to call TMobile as the 3 or 4 times I have spoken with them I have not seen very good technical knowledge at all.
I have searched quite a bit but have not seen any mention of these problems. I'm hoping I am doing something wrong. Any experienced TMobile user out there that can give a few suggestions?
Regards,
Bob

Selling Hermes!

As I have it for 2 months now I have decided to sell it anyway. Why you ask?
Because:
I use the phone for business and after that for private use and it is not quite what I have expected.
Sometimes, quite often infect, I can not answer the incoming call, it just freezes so I have to return calls, really stupid.
The MMS function works horrible, only every 3rd mms gets sent, and SMS is even worse, for only every 10th sms I get delivery report and my clients get more, like 3-5 sms from me.
Do not know why this is happening I really fell in love with Hermes, but some things just must work!
I will tray it maybe later, when the device will be faster, more stable, no more every day soft resets and certainly working for the money I paid for!
Hope yours is working right!
Cheers!

Sorry to hear that vid200. I won't be returning to this site for a few days, so can't check back for an answer, but have you tried upgrading/changing your ROM to a better and more stable one? I was quite upset with my TyTN until 2 weeks after I bought it, I decided to change the ROM to one that everyone was saying was good and stable. It's a simple process if u haven't done so, but do a search on it first.
Unless ur unit is faulty (and it just sounds like software issues), probably everything can be put absolutely allright with a little more time.
Best of luck.
How much?
How much of the Hermes you want to sell?
you know.. if you want to donate the phone i am accepting donations

You haven't any overnight freezing?
No need to delete MSMETADATA folder in storage card to have it seen again from windows media?
Good sound from bluetooth earphones?
No problem with bluetooth devices?
Full day use of push e-mail?
No problems with pocket outolook?
Please this is a developer forum, any opinion is valuable, but don't call us stupid!
"We are preparing a space ship to fly to the sun." This, of course was met with much ridicule. They were asked how they planned to deal with the sun's extreme heat. "Simple, we're going at night!"

What about Wi-fi ? ,how does is wokr ? properly? I have heard about cab. bug . If want use ,need download new one (fixed) from ERA site.
How does the "loose slider" in Vario II ?
How's bluetooth connection with PC ? (Vario II - internet modem)
P.S *sergiopi* I dont have problem only with "overnight freezing"...

I don't use push email service. Only sms/mms,all working good, exept as i say, some of testing apps (when i have wizard it's too) doing some bad and when i send sms it's deliver about 2-4 times to recipient. But when I hard reset i have stock pda with some base apps all good. I must have more time to test apps one by one, which doing this bad.
And next post:
No problem with WiFi, i use on work/home, in city, MC'donalds. I see on era page this cab for hmm "fix" something in wifi, but wifi working then i don't apply it. loose slider? don't see any problems. And i don't use vario as modem for PC.

i can say the same thing about my device.. but want to add that in addition to everything above i do use push mail and it works great, no issues here.. my phone stats are on my sig
I too am having perfect luck with my Hermes - it's been just as reliable as my Wizard was. No wi-fi locking up, no hand-off problems - it's been great!
ROM: 1.35.255.2
Date: 11/14/06
Radio: 1.18.00.10
Edit: I do have one problem... my battery doesn't last a full day with Push email and my IM+ usage. I ordered the 3000mAh battery from Lion... hopefully that fixes that up!

I can also say the same thing. My device works well with the 1.35 SA Rom. Direct push all day about 50 to 75 emails each day, Sony HBH-DS970 bluetooth, 3g on all day..does not switch to gprs. Use bluetooth gps receiver a couple times per week, no problems. Play mp3 via bluetooth everyday from my sdcard, I have never had to delete the msmetadata folder. Receive phone calls 15 to 25 times per day, no issues. I also have spb pocket +, SPB Weather, SPB Diary, TCPMP, TOmTOm 5.21, Pocket Mechanic, SKtools, PpcWEbcam, IM+, Pocket Informant, MS One Note, VxUtils, PHM Regedit, Total Commander, and Sprite Backup without issues. But as for SMS/MMS.. i couldn't say.I don't use either except for about 5 daily alerts for weather and stock quotes. Don't really send any sms or mms, use email instead....

I agree, the only solution is to admit that there are hermes and Hermes, may be here many of us have the hermes release, the poor brother.
I have the same 1.35 SA Rom, no Sbp SW (may be it helps?) and I delete MSMETADATA twice a week.
I had to reset (due to freezing) every day. Seriously speaking, it could be a problem in SD driver. My storage card (and many of us) cards could be the faulty element of the chain
I'm a light user but the phone (Vario II) has been great for me. No problems whatsoever. Worked perfectly out of the box - and still does (two months later).
I switch it off every night (I don't want calls to disturb my sleep and even the guy behind the recent research into mobiles and tumours which said they were harmless said he wouldn't sleep beside his mobile phone!) and I think that this helps the device (i.e. one hard reset every day).
I find that I use my laptop much less these days because for the most common tasks (e-mail, checking presentations, finding information etc.) the Vario is adequate.
