I know this might seem like a "networking" issue, but I'm not sure if it is.
Qtek 9100:
IPL: 2.17
SPL: 2.17
GSM 02.07.10
OS 2.17.7.2
Everytime I plug in my device to my computer w/ Activesync 4.2, about 2 minutes pass after syncing all the contacts/email/calandar, and i get the message on my device telling me "Unable to obtain server-assigned IP Address. Try again alter or enter an IP Address in Network settings."
After this, the connection is lost to my PC- I can't explore the device or anything, i have to unplug it and replug it back in, only to find that i have to rename the device- EVERY time. I can't transfer more than a 3 or 4 meg file because I get the message and the connection is shot.
Any ideas?
I have the same issue as of lately. What software are you running on your wizard?
When you enter 1st time configuration of Remote-NDIS Host in Settings/Network Adapters, there is subnet mask 255.255.255.0 and there are no IP address, then when u whant to exit u must enter IP address ??>>!! no way... so when u select use server-assigned IP address u have this problem. But I cant help u :/ I changed the rom
I think I have your solution
I had this problem with my wizard. There are 2 options that fixed this problem.
1:
The problem started after I enabled 'always on' GPRS. Turn this off and problem goes away.
2:
Go to 'Settings' / 'Connections' / 'USB to PC', and turn off 'Enable advanced network functionality'.

Hope someone can help: Every time I connect my JJ to my PC, I get a popup error message "Pocket PC Networking: Unable to obtain a server-assigned IP address. Try again later or enter an IP address in Network Settings"
This only happens when I connect to my PC via AS, and clearly it's because my JJ is not finding an IP address for via-PC networking - only I CAN access the internet this way! So, it seems that some OTHER adaptor is trying to get an IP address and is failing
I've gone thro all my PPC's network adaptor settings - all set to obtain IP address automatically - but I do believe this problem started when I first looked at these settings.
Is DHCP server enabled on your PC/router/whichever?
No, my PC is not acting as a DHCP server, and my router is an adsl router that serves my PC - which it is doing fine.
I didn't change anything on my PC nor router, just browsed network ADAPTORS on my PPC and next thing I knew I was getting this message. :?
Further, my PPC IS getting an IP address on one of the adaptors, which I can ping from my PC, and it does connect to the internet via my PC without problems (it's 169.254.2.1 on the "remote-NDIS Host" adaptor - which you will show too). Thus, I surmise that the adaptor that is supposed to connect to my PC is working, and it's another network adaptor that's decided it wants an IP for some reason... :? :? :?
Not a critical error, but I hate not being able to solve my JJ problems
I had this problem too.
It's because the Remote-NDIS Host adapter is set to DHCP.
The "catch 22" is this.... If you set it to an IP, the ActiveSync won't connect, but your only other option is to set it to DHCP, then you get this problem.
The solution...
Set Remote-DNIS Host to DHCP via Settings->Connections->Network Cards
Now edit the registry...
HKLM\Comm\RNDISFN1\Params\TcpIp
Edit the key "EnableDHCP" = 0
Problem solved !... No IP set and no DHCP either.
Basically, RNDIS shouldn't have an IP set, but it shouldn't be DHCP either... but as soon as you view RDNIS via the usual network adapters setting then you are forced to have one of the other, which will cause the problem described in this thread or will cause ActiveSync not to work.
Thanks arthurfuxake!!!
You also solved my problem!!!
Good Fix! arthurfuxake
8) Thanks man that fixed that irritating "unable to obtain IP Address" message for me

This should be more prominent than the other search results!
Thatz one awesome soltion arthurfuxake! Thanx man! It seems to have fixed that nagging "Unable to obtain server-assigned IP" error that used to keep popping up on my screen. There is only one other problem... my Atom still can't connect to the Internet through ActiveSync! Any suggestions?!
I messed around with the Network adapters settings, while trying to get WiFi to work properly.
Now everytime I connect to ActiveSync via USB, I get the error message, "Unable to obtain Server Assigned IP address". I am sure this is because I set one of the adapters to "Automatic IP", but I don't know which one. Moreso, my Wizard does not access the internet properly when connected via USB.
Could someone please tell me which adapter I wronged, and what setting its supposed to be?
Solution
Hi, make this:
Start > settings > connections > Network cards > Remote-NDIS Host > Click Use specific IP address
Enter 169.254.2.1 for IP address
Enter 255.255.0.0 for subnet
Enter 169.254.2.2
It functions on my Wizard...
Thanx
Thanks a lot @Viking..
does the trick for me. I had actually tried that before but I had assigned the IP 169.254.2.2 (thinking that 169.254.2.1 would be the laptop) and I got a "Limited connection", so I just set it back to automatic.
I get "unable to obtain a server-assigned IP address. Try again later or enter an IP address in network settings" randomly and even when no networking is running. Any ideas how to fix this?!

I had this too, but can't remember if I had this after updating the ROm to the dopod one or before, so it might just be a bug in the HTC ROM.
I have this problem (sometimes) and I am using the standard HTC ROM.
I have also this problem sometime.
But now I don't see this message anymore.... (no change of ROM but I unticked the flag in settigns / connexion ./ USB -> PC / advanced network )
It might have nothing to do of course.
It could also come from the key : HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/comm/RNDISFN1/Parms/Tcpip which is by default = 1 => need a DHCP to find a IP address
or not )
I think it's just a windows mobile "feature". I get it on my 3600, used to get it on my wizard with various firmware versions...it never went away. Always really random.
Get used to it

In fact it has nothing to do with that. I don't use the advanced network settings for USB to PC (my firewall blocks the activesync connection if I do) but I still get that error message once in a while.
I think the error message is displayed when the DHCP lease expires. If one connects to a WLAN or via GPRS often enough to renew the address before the lease expires then the message doesn't show.
I have a SPV M3100 (TyTn, I think) but I cant get it to connect using WiFi to my wireless router. I can go into 'Configure Wireless Networks' and tell it to connect to my router, all the settings are correct, but all it does is try to connect and fail, and no error message comes up.
Does anyone know how I could fix this problem?
Thanks,
Sebastian
it might help if you state what rom your are using and what protection the router is using? I know there are many threads discussing this issue with WM6 using WPA. Have you tried connecting with no encryption? If so can you connect.
Sorry, the ROM version is: 1.23.61.4, date: 7/13/06
It is running WM5 PocketPC. Encryption is WEP. No I havent tried no encryption. I will after when I get home.
Sebastian
OK, I've tried without encryption, and I've fiddled about with the settings but it still doesn't work.
Each time I tell it to connect it says 'Connecting' for about a second then says 'Unavailable' for a few seconds, then back to 'Available', untill I next tell it to connect.
Any suggestions?
thanks,
sebastian
if it use mac filtering the mac of the tytn need to be added to the lists of mac's the router wanna talk to
that's not the problem either, sorry
Couple of things (I'm running WM6 on my M3100, so WM5 is a bit of distant memory ) you could look at.....
First, does your router use DHCP to issue IP addresses? if not, you'll need to set the phone with a static IP. To do that, go to Start / Settings / Connections tab / Wi-Fi / Network adapters tab, make sure it says "connect to the internet" then tap the "802.11" network adapter, tap "use specific ip address", fill one in and "ok" your way back out.
Second, in Start / Settings / Connections tab / Wi-Fi / Wireless tab, tap and hold your "unavailable" wireless connection then choose Edit. Make sure the "connects to" box says Internet. Also, if your router doesn't broadcast its' SSID, (on WM6 at least) tick the box that says "this is a hidden network", then go next, next finish (making sure the authentication and encryption types match your router config!!).
Hope this helps,
Mark.
I have now been through every intricate detail within settings, and still to no avail. One (possibly) good thing did come out of it though - an error message.
I got it when going to create a new WiFi connection and clicking on the 802.1x tab, it says:
"Cannot log on to the wireless network. This network requires a personal certificate to positively identify you."
I made sure I inputted the network key correctly and all the encryption settings were right.
Please tell me that helps solve the problem! lol
btw, the router is a D-Link DSL-604+, just incase that helps anybody solve the problem.
sebastian
If you're getting certificate errors, it sounds as though you've ticked the setting in the phone's wireless config that says something like "IEEE 802.1x network access" and selected "smart card or certificate".
Go back in to the wireless config, tap and hold the "unavailable" network, then select Edit. Go through - next, next and the authentication is on the last page IIRC.....just untick the box, tap finish and you should be away!!
Cheers,
Mark.
It WORKS!!
I forgot to untick 'The network key is automatically provided' and tried to connect, and it now works
I'll just kiss goodbye to my battery life now
Thanks for everyone who has helped me.
Sebastian
My ATT Tilt wont connect to my D-Link Wireless N Router.. does the Tilt not work on N routers?
hi, i also have a p3600 and i want to upgrade the rom to wm6. everytime when i connect my trinity to my pc the same msg keeps popping up from time to time, namely that my trinty can't get an ip adress. so far i've only reinstalled activesync but it didn't change the problem. i dont want to flash the rom when this msg pops up all the time
sounds like a pc net work setup issue rather then a pda issue is your dhcp service running on the computer=?
yes dhcp is running, but i actually alrdy corrected the problem. searched through the forums here and someone had the same problem. all you have to do is change something in the IP settings from the ppc:
Start > settings > connections > Network cards > Remote-NDIS Host > Click Use specific IP address
Enter 169.254.2.1 for IP address
Enter 255.255.0.0 for subnet
Enter 169.254.2.2
and that resolves the problem
