[BigStorage] upgrade with other OS language - JAM, MDA Compact, S100 General

Hi there,
I was observing for quite a while all these post regards bigstorage, but in nowhere I've found this scenario: if I upgrade my pda with bigstorage with the downloadable premade bigstorage wwe roms, can I upgrade the OS section only (to ITA) without messing around with hexeditors etc..?? I'm too scared at the idea of bricking my s100..
Cheers,
MocciJ

I doubt it. I don't think trying it will brick your Magician, but it probably wouldn't keep the BigStorage enhancement either. It would be much safer though to just download a full normal ITA rom and hack it to BigStorage - though it will take more time, but if you follow the instructions then its nearly impossible to brick your Magician! If you read any guide (I'll promote my own one now ) then you'll find that the hexediting is in fact a very small part of the entire process, and pretty straightforward too.

Newbie puzzled!

Hi guys!
I'm not easily puzzled by terms and stuff to do to tweak your hardware, but since I'm all new to WM, I am trying to make sense of how to go ahead with running a custom ROM. I have a TC with original UK ROM.
First, obviously I should make a dump of my currently installed ROM. I am just very unsure how I achieve that?
Second, I have figured out that I need to Hard-SPL to get rid of certificate-checking in de device to run ROMs.
Third, I need to flash a custom ROM ... at this point I can have my way with the device, and do what I want. Also, not clear how I do that, unfortunately
Offcourse, at some point I will want to return my device for maintenance, warranty or maybe even sell it ... at which point I need to un-do the HardSPL hack, and reflash with the original image ... How would I go about that?
I've searched the forum, and I couldn't find it unfortunately, maybe, since I am a newbie, I missed a term to search for, or maybe I completely misunderstood
Any hints are very welcome!

All of your questions had been answered a number of times already in this forum so there's only one thing you can do, Search and you will find the answers.
Hi. I'm actually searching for the same stuff and haven't found some all-in-one topic yet.
Don't mind "kutonglupa", i'm beginning to think he's a bot on this forum. Even though you say (i did it too) that you used the search function he can only come with one response: "use the search".
I'll keep searching too.
Try this for starters: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=356895
You probably know this already
Hard-spl flash:
Download hard-spl
Plug the usb cable to your pda.
Run RomUpdateUtiliy on PC.
PDA will display tricolour.
You will be asked REPLUG you usb cable. DO IT!
After a few second Hard-spl will be upgraded!
Rom flash:
Download the rom
Step manually to bootloader (press and hold camera button and press reset)
You will get a tricolor screen.
Plug the usb cable to your pda
Start RomUpdateUtiliy.exe (or Rom.exe) on you Pc.
Pda screen will be grey, you will see the process indicator.
When it is 100%, update is finished.
Radio-rom flash
The same as rom flash above, just download and use the radio-rom.
Back to offical rom + radio:
The same as rom flash above, just download and use the offical rom!
Back to original spl:
At this time no working method as I know...

Newbie thanks for opening this thread,
it give a very good overview what to really do for flashing the Rom without having to read through XX Pages.
Unfortunately I have still have not found a right link on how to backup my orginal O² German ROM.
What do I need for this just in case I do need to send in the Polaris?
Is the software specifc for the Polaris?
Look forward for a quick note.
Cheers
Rar9
Be careful with what you try from the Kaiser forum in terms of tweaks though, I've read people had problems using them on the Polaris. see the Polaris tips and tricks thread for details

Thanks dude. You're welcome!
I was reading now in the whole forum for about two whole afternoons, and I have to say that I still have the same questions as the threadstarter.
These questions answered once and for all, this thread would be worth pinning in my opinion, because complete newbies don't know where to find the necessary information in this really huge forum.
For the case someone wants to come up again with "use search", I will try to make clear, what problems of newbies (including me) are:
For example: I now already found three different lists of HTC-cab-files in the forum, one here in the polaris-section, one in the general section, a half one in the wiki... often without version-info, and so don't really know whats the actual one...
so far so confusing, I tried to search for the answers onto the exact same questions as the threadstarter posted. in the wiki, there is simply nothing on WM6, no tools, no real how-to, nothing a newbie can use.
Only thing I could understand from wiki, is that cooking an own ROM, needs to have a unix(-like) OS, and even there, I'm not sure if it is still actual for WM6.
Reading a bit around, I then was glad to at least find out that the devices are locked for non-certified ROMs, and that one needs to do that HardSPL.
Well that's as far as I could get until now, and I really don't know much more than before. Pretty unsatisfactory...
So could anyone make (or point to) a little overview of what one needs to know about dumping, flashing WM6-ROMs, and before flashing, what one needs to "cook" an own ROM.
Perhaps I was imagining this way to easy, but I thought about nLite/vLite-style applications for customizing ROMs?! Probably you'll all laugh at me, but I would very much appreciate taking me serious, because I want to learn how to do it. Simply don't want to lose time searching the forum for information, that don't help me advance...
thanks a lot
Eric
EDIT:
well I found this, which I can only recommend to all newbies: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=356895
with this, questions of flashing are all answered,
but what tools one needs for dumping, flashing, editing ROMs and all of the remaining questions mentioned above remain open

Trying to upgrade. G3 or G4?

Hey guys, I´m new here and trying to upgrade my new Herald. I´ve been reading quite a bit from lots of threads and don´t want to mees up pr bieck my device so, a few doubts:
1) in bootloader I read IPL: 5.04.0002 and SPL 5.04.0000. Do I have a G3 or G4?
2) Before upgrading the the ROM I´ve read i have to hard-spl the herald as a preventive meassure. Will Hard-SPL-Herald from Olipro work fine for me?
3) Which would be the latest version from Touch-It that I should flash to replace the original ROM?
Thanks a lot to all you. I take my hat before you all for all these developments.
the herald doesn't have a g3 or a g4 per say. The SPL/IPL tends to vary by your carrier (tmobile's SPL/IPL is currently 4.XX but others may be 1.XX or 5.XX)
HSPL-herald from olipro should work fine, but the majority of us seem to be using yang's HSPL. Search the herald forums for it.
The newest version of touch-it is simply the one with the highest build number. It always is. Itje only cooks for herald part time, and the other cooks seem to have gone somewhere.
Thanks for the clarifying info. I´ll look for yang's as you mentioned and continue with itje's touch-it. I'll take every step really carefull to avoid any problem

yeah, why not...i´d love to try papamopps features but still having trouble to move on with hard-spl.

Too Much BA's ROM version makes me confuse...
how about u?
pliss suggest us.. which the best one... tq
There is no "best one" unfortunately. You have to try them all, and find the one who meet your needs.
Anyway, there are three Roms: xplode, sun_dream and PDAViet ones.
If you follow the instructions carefully, you will never regret dumping WM2003SE. I have so far not changed the EXTROM size (to keep the upgrade simple) and have tried sun_dream which was hugely better than the old O/S and then pdaviet ROMS which am using now. Suggest you read the threads on each ROM to help you decide.
Prior to changing to a new ROM I wrongly thought:
My phone might change into a brick.
It would not be as reliable.
It would run out of battery much faster.
Make sure your usb port is robust eg it does not drop in and out on your pc and that you disable PC spyware and virus checker before doing an upgrade as these utilities might interfere with the transfer of data.
Cheers,
Alistair.
its a choice... every ROM maker had a characteristic...
so, which one is suits you? try them all

[Help] Update recomendation on xda exec

Hi there!
Today I've bought an xda exec with the following specs:
Rom: 1.13.82 WWE
Radio: 1.04.02
RAM: 64MB
What is the recommended update to the ROM and Radio I can do?
Thanks in advance!

That's an old O2 ROM. The latest (last!) original XDA EXEC ROM from O2 can be found here.
Then there's an ocean of home-cooked ROMs, mostly WM6.x (you gain A2DP and other features but lose on video calling).

Welcome to Uni forum (gosh, I sound just like Orb2000 now ) Actually, make it ORB3000!!!! There, much better!
While we cannot recommend a particular ROM and Radio combination, your device comes with standard features, so pretty much anything that takes your fancy and is suitable for your device in this section would be perfect for the taking. The first thing you should do is read the Wiki, it contains loads of necessary information to help you identify your device and its features for the upgrade purposes and avoid any mistakes or pitfalls. Then you can familiarize yourself with available ROMs and read user opinions and feedback on their performance and features. Generally the best performers will be found on top of the WM6.1 upgrade section marked as a Sticky. Finally, once you get to know all you need and are ready to upgrade, you will be able to try some out and select the one that has the best combination of features FOR YOU. As far as Radio is concerned, there is no fast and steady rule for a perfect combo, some developers will recommend the Radio to be used with their ROM, some users will suggest what works for them, you can always try various versions (ftp server is your friend) and see which will work best for you.
Best of luck. Enjoy!
Thanks!
I've already read lot's of information on wiki for universal...
Already unlocked the "sim lock" and just updated the radio to the last one (1.18.00). Before the universal, I had an Magician (still have it, and working great with the WM 6.1 by cotulla).
I've read about the G3 and bootloader, but didn't understand how to update the bootloader (my universal have 1.00 version)... What is that for?
Also, I will try the WM6.5 ROM http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=529951 because read 'bout that and like it... just one question.. it the 6.1 better than the 6.5? If I change the rom to 6.5 can I change back to any other, inclusive the 6.1 rom?
Thanks!

6.1 ROMs are more developed and used, therefore will be more stable and practical in everyday usage. Another thing is available resources, e.g. 6.5 ROMs tend to be on resource-hungry side, therefore those of us with standard 64Mb machines will not get as much free RAM or speed in some cases available to run our favorite programs as those with devices upgraded to 128Mb. You can try 6.5, of course, just note the above points. And of course you will be able to downgrade to other 6.1 or shipped ROMs.

Some really really simple queries

Hey guys,
I have been browsing this forum extensively for the past two days and must say there is wealth of resources here and lot of knowledge sharing.
However I find that most of the threads are bit on the steep side for a Windows mobile novice like me to understand. I just got a new HD2 few days back.
Can some one please give a one line meanings of below terms and if possible links on this site or elsewhere that can give a lay mans definition. Once I got a hang of the terms then I can go around on my own. I am sure there are many like me.
- HSPL (I saw the main HSPL thread but does not explain what is HSPL)
- Flashing
- Cooked ROM, stock ROM
- Radio
- SPL
Thanks in advance.

Hi and welcome!
You might want to read this wiki:
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=SPL Questions?
It should cover all of the above (it is designed for a non-HD2 device, but the explanations aren't dependant on model).

"HSPL" or "Hard SPL" is a bootloader. What this means is that it's software that goes on your phone which is invoked as the phone loads, and from there loads the operating system and/or presents and executes other advanced functions.
The default bootloader is "locked" so that only signed ROMs can be flashed. HSPL un-"locks" this so you can flash any ROM.

"Flashing" refers to writing to ROM. When you "flash" a phone you write a new operating system to its ROM.

A "stock" ROM is one distributed and/or made by the OEM. A "cooked" ROM is one distributed and/or made by a non-OEM.
The ROMs you can download from HTC's site are "stock".
The ROMs you can download in the ROM forum are "cooked".

A bootloader for the phone. The "H" in "HSPL" means "Hard" meaning it's un-"locked".
Great responses.
rp-x1,
Thats precisely the kind of url I was looking for. It explains fair bit on SPL. Are there any other pages here, perhaps one which is indexed or a step by step tutorials going further into flashing and explaining other terms?
Spike 15,
Thanks for the definitions.
So I understand that 'flashing' is a Winmo term for actually changing the core rom.
If i relate it to Windows terminology, then I guess ROM in WinMo is similar to set of custom dll, exe's in Windows that affects the core OS.
Also, what is a signed and unsigned ROM? I know in Symbian we have signed and unsigned apps but they can be self signed, I guess this must be something similar.
- Is installing HSPL (the one on this forum) recommended?
- How would I determine that I need to upgrade or change to another ROM be it stock or cooked?
For e.g. I tried installing the new HTC rom from their website but I got an invalid vendor id. I believe that is because my phone is locked to T Mobile UK. Would HSPL + a WWE ROM unlock the phone?
Thanks again.
Metal
Bringing up thread.
Can someone please respond?
Should I really install HSPL or a Soft SPL?
If it is HSPL can I use the one given on this
link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=611433
Should i use the HSPL.zip and HSPL2_RUN.zip ?
I am locked to T Mobile but want to use O2, will Hard SPL allow me to do that? Means if I do HSPL and then flash a WWE rom
Thanks
Metal,
Before you do anything there has been early Tmobile USA hd2's out there so i have to ask... do you have a hd2 from europe or from USA.
the new TMobile USA hd2 has SPL 2.X.X, the hspl you see around is for the europe one and WILL NOT work on TMO USA HD2.
U asked if it was recommended... well it does void the warranty... but you can go backwards if needed to send into repairs, but that scares some people in to even attempting this for a 500-800 dollar device.
Now away from that part of it, yes unlocking your phone allows you to flash these "cooked" roms into your phone... which by theory will make your phone work faster, better, and do things it "should have" out the box. There are normally little treats as well as built in software that makes your experience better because you don't have to load on apps and slow down your phone because they are already "cooked" into the ROM.
Boredtonite,
Thanks for the reply.
I am on T Mobile UK, so I assume that it is the European version.
I had a look at few vids on youtube regarding flashing and then reverting it back, so it does not look that difficult to me.
Only thing that I want to know is if I should do it, if yes which is the correct version I should use.
Can anyone provide me the link to the correct version of HSPL that I should use for my T Mobile UK phone
Also once I run that is it recommended if I flash the HTC wwe rom from its website?
