WiFi gone after tweaking registry - please help newbie! - Networking

I was messing with EasyTweak 1.0 - network/ie - networking -
Disable Zero Configuration, checked the box -it warned me I
couldn't set up wireless, so I unchecked it, but it seems to have
done it anyway. Can't connect at all to WiFi, even with WiFi companion.
The program "tweaked" the registry. And me, too!
I have Resco Registry Editor - do I need something else?
How do I return it to normal?
Also, I have access to another identical (rom, etc.) phone from which
I could copy the needed file / setting if I knew which one it was.
Please help this moronic newbie...

If you have one, you can restore your backup after an hard reset.

I don't.
I got SKTools today. 2 days too late.
Could I install it on wife's 8125, back up the registry and restore to
mine?
I wouldn't mind reloading all the programs afterwards.
Would reloading the rom restore registry defaults?

Hard reset did it.
got wifi now.

1.06 ROM, GPRS not always-ON

Has anyone come up with a fix so that the GPRS is back to being always on as it was in the original 1.03 ROM? I have read some posts on this on other sites, but I have not found anything here. I assume that I have everything set properly, but the GPRS has to be started every time now.
In general I do not feel that the 1.06 ROM upgrade did much of anything to enhance my device, and quite frankly I wish I was back to 1.03, however, I have heard that a new ROM upgrade will soon be released and I bet that one or I hope that one will provide some real value and fix things.
I've posted this in another thread, here's the quote:
Here's a solution I've done to my XDA II with T-Mobile GPRS problem. I don't know who came up with this solution, but thanks to my friend who suggested this at PDAMobiz.com.
1. After a hardreset and completing the initial screen alignment, interrupt the auto-installation process by softreset your XDA II (you have 3 seconds before the files in Extended_ROM will automatically install).
2. Make your Extended_ROM viewable, whether by using the Extended ROM Viewer from http://www.ppcw.net or Extended ROM Switcher (sorry I forgot the link).
3. Now, install each cab files, except TMD_AP_NL.sa.CAB. In fact, I also disregarded, Caller ID, and some other TMD stuff.
As a result, the GPRS is now always-on as it should be.
Cheers,
Thank you for responding to this post. I had to wait quite awhile.
Your #3. states to install the cab files and disregard the TMD files. Did you delete these files or just not open them? What are these TMD Files for?
I assume that I cannot, at this point and without a hard reset, just delete the TMD Files that are viewable in my Extended Rom. Is this a correct assumption or could I accomplish the same goal by just deleting those files?
Thank You

Yes you need to delete does file from Extended_ROM and hard reset it.
Or hard reset, quickly soft reset after you finish the screen calibration, run the extended_rom viewer and manually open/run each of the cab files except the mention cab. ( basically follow exactly what jopard said ).
I read also somewhere in this forum that someone did a differrence search on the registry between GPRS always on and GPRS off when idle. With this method you can change the setting without hard reset.
Hi, the mentioned cab installs the following registry key (among others):
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\ConnMgr\Planner\Settings]
"CacheTime"=dword:0000003c
"SuspendResume"=hex(7):\
69,6e,74,65,72,6e,65,74,00,00,00,00
I guess it must be the SuspendResume setting. Can you post your setting without applying the cab file?

This is my setting running my own cook 1.60.06 skiping that file:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\ConnMgr\Planner\Settings]
"SuspendResume"=hex(7):7E,00,47,00,50,00,52,00,53,00,21,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00
"CacheTime"=dword:00000258
And yes my GPRS is always on.
Hm, I'll try that, but I had another problem:
When I was always GPRS-connected my GSM-connection was always lost
after 12-24h. The device showed that it is connected but I could not dial out and I could not be called.
Now since I am not "always on" anymore I do not have this problem anymore.
Did you experience something similar?

Is there a way to do this without hardrestting? It just took me two hours to load all the program into XDA. Can I just hack the reg?
thanks
my rom
My rom does not even have this cab in the ext file. Can I hack it in the reg?
I have XDA II 1.50WWE ROM

I think you will find that many carriers have a "timeout" after several hours of non use.

SuspendResume
What does this look like in the registry:
This is my setting running my own cook 1.60.06 skiping that file:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\ConnMgr\Planner\Settings]

I have PHM Registry Editor, and entering the entire string does not look like a meaningful option.
Is it a REG_DWORD with a base of HEX ?
Regards
Michael
I use resco registry editor you can just import in that registry.
I found another post regarding this issue:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?p=26866
I'm afraid I do not understand how this thread has evolved.
I understand the posts that speak to the hard reset and softreset within 3 seconds to keep the device ROM applications from loading. From there to install fix for viewing extended ROM files and then load everything except TMD, and perhaps some of the T-Mobile apps you do not want. Although the response says a specific TMD file and some other TMD-no specifics, all or some?
The balance of the thread seems to speak to radio settings.
Is it being said that you can change some settings on the radio stack and get the GPRS always on? If so how do you do this in reasonably simple terms?

Nonintrusive Keep-Alive
The intrusive solutions are enticing to me but they are for "developers". From a user's point of view, I am always worried about doing something and then not being able to restore it to the original state (or having to spend a lot of time to get back) should something go wrong. My bandage solution (unique to my use situation) is to open an ssh or a telnet window and run a shell script which loops to print the current timestamp and then sleeps for 5 seconds. A T-Mobile tier 2 tech guy told me that the disconnection was by design for the benefit of network service providers so that they can save on connection resources.
By the same token, I like the Keep-Alive application solution - I think it is worth my $2.45 (See thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=5220). I wonder if the to-come T-Mobile Windows PPC 2003 comes with some sort of control that is equivalent to the Keep-Alive application - in a matter of a month or two, supposedly.

Missing Bluetooth icon after using PIToday

Hi guys,
I've been playing with PIToday for a couple of days now but I noticed one thing: My bluetooth icon on the Today screen disappeard after using PIToday. The only way to get it back for me is unchecking PIToday and soft reset. This is a bummer!
I've been checking some sites for solutions but could only find the solution mentioned above and one solutions for a 3870. This was putting a shortcut to the bluetooth icon in the startup folder. In the case of a MDA II, there is no such shortcut possible. I checked the registry and Windows directory but the is no .exe file which will start the bluetooth icon. Only .dll. But I don't know where to point it to. :?:
Any other suggestions? Because I would like to buy PIToday but I still want to access my bluetooth from the Today screen.
Wouter
Even though I am a huge fan of Pocket Informant, i experienced a lot of issues with the PI today plug in and stopped using it. It may be incompatability with other software I also have installed but as well as the missing BT icon it also caused instability (lock ups) and the occassional auto soft reset.
In regard to the missing BT icon though PI today is not the only culprit. Users of Pocket Breeze from SBSH Mobile software have reported the same issue. Only way to restore it is unselect the today plug in and soft reset.

Hi Ednap,
Somebody suggested a sort of sulution for me: Using Zenphone. In Zenphone there is an option to turn bluetooth on and off in a profile. And it seems to work!
It is not the solutions but a least it is workable.

hi,
some kind of solution
get the tool "No Plugins today" (h**p://www.ictinus.com/NoPluginsToday/)
install it (of coz)
insert into your registry a new string like this
HKEY_LOCAL_MASCHINE\init\LaunchXX where XX is the highest number of the Launch under INIT (I use "Launch90")
enter as the stringvalue the path to the tool e.g. "\Storage\NoToday\NoPluginsToday.exe" or whereever you have installed the tool
insert a link under \Windows\startup or \windows\autostart (depends of the language) and point it again to this tool. Rename the Link in such way, that it will run last (eg. "XXXNoToday")
ok, thats all, reset your device, and enjoy your Bluetooth icon
It is not a failure by any of the Today-Plugins, which make the icon vanish, it's just a timeout of the btdll, caused by Plugins, which need too much time to initialize itself, so the icon just nor appear.
What does this thing?
after reset it removes the todayscreens, the bluetooth icon appears, and after that the notoday-tool switches the plugins on again.
you need some more time (3-4 secs) after the reset, but, who cares, you got the icon back

Nice work, IvkovicD!
I'll give it a try and I'll post this solution also at the PIToday forum. I'm sure this solutions is a great help for Deje the maker of the program.
B.t.w I tried SnoopSoft Dash Today Advanced today to see if I like it. It is not bad. A bit slow but guess what happens?
My headset profile is now gone! First I thought it was because I had too many Todayplugins but after removing a few and soft resetting it still wouldn't come back. Any suggestions for this one?
Thanks,
Wouter
To create a shortcut to Bluetooth copy the following into a shortcut file (text file with lnk extension i.e. Bluetooth.lnk):
34#\windows\ctlpnl.exe cplmain.cpl,23
and copy it across to your PPC

Might it be that your profile is just gone from the Today screen? Check Settings>Personal Tab>Today>Items Tab and see if Profile is checked.
Hi Mark,
No. The headset profile was not there anymore in the list. I contacted Chris Scott, who makes DashToday and the only solution he had for now, was to uninstall the program.
Not realy a good option in my opinion.... Especialy because I just bought the program because there is no trial avaliable.
For your other solution:
I want to make sure that I realy understand. You want me to make a textfile and name it i.e Bluetooth.lnk. In this file there should be the line:
34#\windows\ctlpnl.exe cplmain.cpl,23
Then copy this file to my PPC and presumably to the startup directory?
Just want to make sure.
Thanks,
Wouter

Copy it to the Start Menu folder. It won't bring back your bluetooth icon back but you will be able to access the settings from the start menu.
Thanks,
I give it a try later.

Hi,
I know this effect. I've have this "vanishing", too, if I install too much today- plug ins. Just grab your favourite registryeditor and delete some build-in today-registry entries for today items, e.g. original-task, or some of the other build in ones. If you need it (I don't believe that , make a backup, but really, do you need them?)
reset your device, the missing plugs should appear again...
Sometimes, the OS just do not display some today-plugins, if there are too much entries into registry, even, if you do not activate them...maybe at MS nobody thought that someone needs more then 5 todayplugs at once...
just joking

Dejan
Hi Dejan,
Sounds like an interesting solution. Want to give it a try but I can't find the path to the right regkeys. :?: Do you know were those keys are to be found?
Wouter
Hi Dejan,
I found the reg keys. (HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Today) and deleted the Task, Calendar and Owner Info keys. Then I did a soft reset but my Bluetooth icon didn't reappear.
Too bad.
Did it work for you?

Touch Screen irresponsive

Hi,
I just upgraded to 1.06.00 wwe on my machine. The upgrade seems to have gone well, and the machine is working fine (except the speaker prob that I posted about in another thread).
But after I restore from the xbackup job that I did before the ROM upgrade, the touch screen becomes irresponsive, and doesn't react at all.
Any tips, ideas or comments?
Seems like there were registry setting that had been changed/added. I managed to fix it this way:
* Export the registry right after a hard reset (using tascal regedit)
* Export the registry right after the xBackup restore (digitizer not responding, but I can control the machine using ActiveSync Display powertoy)
* Import the hard rest registry file
* Soft reset (now the screen is responding)
* Import the post backup registry file
This make sure that any registry settings added after the ROM update are included in the registry, but all my personal customizations before the upgrade are there.
I didn't try to identify the registry setting more, but I have both .reg files and I can diff them.
I've got the same problem yesterday. Did you get it to work again? If yes can you desribe the way to do it a little more please.
Regards
Hey
I do not know about you guys but I think it is a memory issue.
In the early days I had this problem with pre-SE ROMs when I had loads of applications at startup and running in the background after using any particular program for a long time the screen alignment seems to go bezerk.
My solution was to remove unnecessary startup apps and keep back-office ones to minimum.
No such problems with WM2003SE so far.
I have also upgraded to the ROM (I wish I didn't). I am using sprite backup which does indeed back everything up successfully but once backed up the touch screen becomes very slow.
I tried to backup and then restore the registry but this touch screen is still really slow. I have to hold the stylus in place for about 3 seconds. The only way I can think of getting around this is once you have upgraded the jam is to reinstall everything.
Oh and the camera is indeed worse with the new ROM
I've got the exact same problem...

Lost Verizon specific registry entries

I figured out the last time I hard resetted that using sktools to clean the registry, took away some important entries. Both MSN home page looks different and I cannot check the verizon site for my minutes data etc. Well today I was in the store and I must of accidently ran sktools registry cleaner. I stopped it but it was too late. I am so made and don't want to hard reset just to gain back the verizon site and the real msn. I am not sure if this even makes sense or you know what I am talking about.
So for those who can check the verizon site from mobile.vzw.com/wps/portal, then can you please find those registry entries i cannot remember the name. maybe arrcsoft or something? Would hitting program get it back or maybe i can reinstall some how the registry? I tried to restore from sktools but it didn't work. On vacation and this is getting on my nerves. thanks guys!

Unable to Launch HTC Sense

Hey guys,
Right now my Leo is unable to launch HTC sense after I did a soft-reset after modifying the registry "Change - CacheSize to 4096" gotten from the Leo Hints & Tips thread as well as uninstalling Nimbuzz.
Also I also created a shortcut for Task Manager to put into the start menu and added it to the Manilla shortcut at the main page.
A couple of soft-resets still doesn't solve it, and sometimes it will say tap here to start HTC Sense but tapping doesn't do anything. Able to open the dialing menu but takes quite awhile.
Pressing the contacts menu gives the error message "The file "contacts" cannot be opened. Either it is not signed with a trusted cert, or one of its components cannot be found. If the problem persists, try reinstalling or restoring this file.
Any ideas?
Got the same problem.
Duttys HD Holy Grail
I tried to reinstall the rom but I can't connect with usb.
did you try that?
same problem here.
rom is 1.48 from stock.
also had the unable to launch sense error, couldnt find a way to solve it so i had to hard reset (AGAIN!!)
having to link 90 contacts with facebook manually sucks!
Does anyone have been able to solve this problem? I faced it today, I was doing some tweaks to my HD2, did some soft resets but then sudenlly it stops working, Sense freezes and has been unable to launch it, sometimes I can access to start menu but I can't load anthing, every link I tried to open tells me that the file cannot be opened either it's not signed or one of its components cannot be found. Nothing but the phone can be opened.
My rom is 1.48 stock.
Is the only solution for this a hard reset?

I faced similar problem before if I added the tweak of FATFS=4096. I did "hard reset" and then reinstalled all stuffs. I reinstalled all programs and readded the tweaks except FATFS one. The phone resumes normal.
It seems to me that the tweak of FATFS may not work on HD2.
Yes, actually I managed to remove that tweak without hard reset it, reverted it to FATFS=0 and everything came back to normal, my HD2 is now like it was before.
We MUST warn every HD2 owner to not apply this tweak.
I've cautioned this particular tweak on the main thread before.
changing the FATFS would hanged the HD2 (ROM: 1.48 Asia Region) and you'll need to hard reset to revert to the default settings.
Ohhh I didn't see that...
Thanks calyon!

HOw you do that?!
First I disabled HTC Sense from Home, then I move to the top of the start menu the registry editor (in my case it's SKTools Registry Explorer), then I turned it off and on several times and every time I tried to run the registry editor, when I was unable to run it I turned it off and on again, until I was able to run the registry editor, then navigated to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\StorageManager\FATFS and changed back the FATFS to 0.
I don't know how many times I've had to turn it on and off, but I thinks it's better than do a hard reset, specially if you don't have a backup or your data.

(considering you have a reg editor already installed of course)
Thank you very much vhjc... you saved all of us lots of painfull time!
Hello,
I just changed the FATFS registry value to 4096 based on the tweaks hint & tips and now my HD2 hangs and couldn't launch the HTC Sense app. Reading the responses above, it seems that it's possible to disable HTC Sense from Today setting in this kind of condition. However no matter how I tried to click on the "Setting" icon on the Start Menu screen, I only got the error window saying that the program is missing and we need to restore or reinstall... I couldn't connect the device to my laptop thru activesync to remove the registry since the activesync app (the switcher between storage device & activesync window) failed to load as well...
Could you please share how did you manage to go to the Today setting window to disable the HTC Sense? I couldn't see any other options since no other shortcuts are available, nor I can run any app from the start menu Is there a way to load HD2 standard WinMo OS in safe mode only...?
I'm really desperate on this situation and as much as possible I don't wanna hard reset my HD2 since I haven't done any backup yet...
Please help... Thank you very much in advance!
cheers
Im getting the unable to launch htc sense message too, even after a hard reset the problem re-occurs. can anyone advise me what to do??
Sorry, should have mentioned this above, I have not changed the registry setting of fatfs to anything other than 0, so this is not whats causing this problem for me. I have tried using a reg editor ro confirm the setting is 0 still no luck.
