EDGE OR GPRS - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario General

Hi, i have an MDA Vario on UK T-mobile.
I read on here that the vario supports EDGE but how do i connect to it? Or do T-Mobile actually do it? I am on the Unlimited Internet contract.
Is it settings i have to change or something?
Thanks.

At the mo edge is only in the USA, not in UK yet!!! We have to stuff but just not using it!!!

It's an automatic thing, if Edge is enabled in the area it will use that if not then the default is gprs. I enabled one of the registry hacks so that when Edge is being used an E icon appears instead of G.

not only in the USA, many countries have it...

Sorry to disagree Funman but edge is available in UK I'm using it in Essex at the mo and also around Heathrow airport

So how do you find out if it is available in your area or not??
It's so confusing....lol.

Access to 3G Network (vodafone)

Hi, I have been watching with keen interest the development of the Universal. I had the original XDA and the XDA2 but have been waiting for this 3G device before I upgrade.
I have one on back order, but not with Expansys. I have been watching Expansys wondering if I should get one through them instead of waiting however when I phoned them for some technical info about 3G networks the sales individual did not know anything about the "UK networks"!!!
So, does anyone know if you can take an unlocked, uncofigured, JasJar (such as those being sold on Expansys) and just configure the settings for 3G, or is it far more complicated than that.
I am sure I read somewhere that 3G settings need to be configured by the network, unlike GPRS which I have easily configured for my voda sim card in my xdas.
Well if it can be configured, anyone know the settings for the JasJar to use vodafone 3G ??
Cheers, Numb
jasjar on vodafone
just got my jasjar today, put in my normal sim which was purchased already on the normal 2g network and it not only came up ok but came up on vodafones 3g network with no problems what so ever.
talking to vodafone they also told me that for instance my 3g sim from my datacard which is not even on a voice contract would work though of course as i have no free minutes i would get charged at normal network rates for voice calls.

re
n1, thats good to hear. But did u have to configure any settings for 3G ? or was the phone already configured, and if it was already configured it who by, Expansys ?
If they are unlocked presumably you have to configure it to your chosen network ?
Thx fer the reply tho, can't wait to get mine now, you lucky devil.
Cheers, Numb
to make a long stiry short: settings for gprs and umts/3g are the same, no need to change anything, if you have your vodafone gprs set you are ready to use 3g as well.
cheers, lutz
re
 n1 lutzh that is what I was after. Keeping my fingers crossed for early next week. Otherwise I may to try a different distributer.
Thx again for the heads up.

MDA Compact and 3G network UK

Hi all,
Congrats for the nice forum. I got my MDA compact sim free recently which I used with my Vodafone UK sim card and it worked fine. However I have signed a new contract on 3G UK in Phones4you where I was convinced by the dealer that the sim card can be used to another sim free phone apart from the 3G Nokia 6680 I have taken. It seems that this was not true because when I insert the sim card in the MDA it says "Ivalid Sim Card" and I can't use it now. Do you know any way I could manage my problem? Any advice is appreciated. Thank you very much.
I'm interested in this too. I have considered switching to the 3 network but that fact that you have to use their phones has thus far put me off.

Yes, they have good price plans, but I am really disappointed cause I can't use my MDA. Their sim cards seem to be locked and unfortunately I have no idea whether there is any way to make it suitable to non-3G phones.
The dealer lied.
3 will not allow non 3G phones because it involve cost to them. Three roam to O2's GSM (2G and 2.5G) when you are out of range of the 3 network and that costs them money. If you have a 2.5G phone like the Magician then it will be permanently roamed to O2 and they would make no money from you becasue they would be billed by O2 for your calls.
Don't forget you get a "cooling off" period on these contracts. Might be worth using it.
MDA Compact is not a UMTS phone! I think it couldn't operate in 3G networks! Correct me if I'm wrong.

Are you sure?! This is very strange! Are you talking about Orange in Israel?!
Thank you all for the replys, it seems that unfortunately in UK it would be impossible to use 3G card on the MDA. As the 6680 has nothing in common with the MDA I hope my bills to compensate the inconvenience
3G
Using a non umts phone like the magician to connect to a umts network seems to me a very strange and bad idea.
Wait until next year (not so long) and buy the HTC Hermes or the XDA version : it's a S110 with the features of a QTEK 9100 and umts and wifi and ....

Yeah, an Israeli Orange sim card works OK on my Magician.
of course I couldn't use any 3G services...
3 is a UMTS-only network. All 3G phones in the UK are dual-mode GSM/UMTS phones.
Because the 3 network does not cover enough of the UK it has an arrangement with O2 so that 3 phones will 'roam' to O2 when out of 3 coverage. When they do this they use O2's GSM network. So, a GSM phone with a 3 USim would be permanently roamed to O2 as I said earlier.
An Orange USim will work in an Orange GSM phone. Orange (in the UK) have a GSM Network and are rolling out a UMTS network. When an Orange phone is out of reach of the Orange UMTS network, it simply uses the Orange GSM network instead. Now if you put a usim into an Orange GSM phone, it simply accesses the Orange GSM network and can't see the UMTS one. Oh and it will be able to use the 2.5G GPRS system as well.
A bit wordy but I think it's clear.
also remember folks thats "3" use a 5volt sim card unlike every other uk network that still use the old 3volt cards.

vodafone hungary. but i can also check out pannon GSM.. (a specific hungarian provider), i will try my pannon SIM in the qtek 9000 soon
speed wise, i've been able to get 300 kbps easily. battery consumption doesn't feel too bad, actually i think it is surprisingly good. cost is the same as plain gprs, if i pay for gprs i automatically get 3G with it. 15$ a month for 100 MB (if i had a contract this would be 200 MB, sigh).
all in all i really love 3G!

HSDPA on T-Mobile UK PAYG

I got myself a payg sim to use in my tytn thinking that I would have access to HSDPA; however I found the following article about having to enable HSDPA on your T-Mobile SIM to take advantage and only then it looks like contract.
http://msmobiles.com/news.php/5536.html
Does anyone else have experience with a T-Mobile PAYG sim and do you have HSDPA enabled?
I've got one and it worked on HSDPA straight out of the box.
Phil
Well I got a Vario II and WnW pro and was getting .3Mbps until I phoned them. The girl on support was trying to get a techie but couldn't and said she would try to get hold of someone and call back. The next time I tried a speedtest an hour or so later I got 1.1Mbps.
yeah i just realied te hsdpa service wasnt added on my vario II line either.... ( i hope they activate it by default on new connects, mines been through a few price plan changes in the last few months )
getting onto it now though,
does anyone know if thats good for PAYG as well? I presume everyone below is talking about contract.

Mine was a new contract - so not always it seems.
My post above was not clear. My Tmobile payg card works with HSDPA without having to get get anything switched on.
Phil
I found out today from T-Mobile Cutomer Rep (and confirmed in Store) that T-mobile PAYG cutomers are not connected to the HSDPC network, thats for contract only though payg can access standard 3g services.

I'm assuming that you were using the xda exec previously on 2g so the UTMS settings are not enabled. You can enter these manually if you find out what they are. Try O2 for that. I run an O2 XDA Exec on Tmobile having bought it sim free on ebay, and tmobile have a tutorial with 3g settings on their website. O2 will probably have something like that.
Come to that, a hard reset should set it up for 3g anyway, I think.
Maybe you are using it in an area where there is no 3g service.
Sorry not to be of more help.
no probs its all sorted now the 3g network in my area is crap only get it when im in town (and i live a mile away) tested it and it works yipee!!!!!!!!!!!!
