Connect via Wifi and then gprs? - Networking

Hiya,
Noob here - please be gentle
Have been borwsing the site for a few days and still haven't found a definitive answer to this:
I have uninstalled the o2 bloat, but still want to be able to access o2's wap stuff (for train times, etc)
When I am at home and connected to wifi I want to use that, but when I'm out on the road I want to use GPRS. I have read somewhere that you can set up wifi to be the first port of call, and if that's not available then use GPRS. Any ideas? C'mon - you're clever!
Thanks

nevermind...I figured it out.

is it a registry tweak??

Try the Vairio GPRS app thats in the MDA CDs, I also just posted here.. http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=32094
Its not ideal but it will allow you to controll when GPRS is on or not - other than that the MDA will work it for its self.

i'm struggling at the moment since my kjam decides to turn wifi off when it sleeps but still activesyncs via gprs even when i'm in the house and the wifi is still available.
i've tried that reg hack to stop wifi turning off on suspend but all that has done is stopping the wifi relogging on to the access point when i turn back on and stop gprs
can someone upload the vario app so can see if that helps.

Since we're talking about wifi, for several hours yesterday I tried getting on my WiFi at work and home. No luck. Thinking it might help, I went to Starbuck's and couldn't get on either.
Can someone help me??!!! I did it with my PDA2K but can't remember how. This is really starting to piss me off!
My wifi at work and home had WPA-PSK and TKIP setup. I found, and I think this is the problem, that when I had these options selected on the K-Jam 802.1x was also enabled...and I couldn't uncheck it like I can on my laptop. (I confirmed the wifi worked via laptop). So, I went to an open system and I still couldn't connect. I could see the network, and I was asked for the passphrase, but I couldn't connect and get an IP address. I tried Starbucks and the same thing happened.
Any thoughts????
Thanks,
Tom

GPRS Disable / Enable

Is there an app available that will allow me to diable or enable GPRS usage ? I would like to use GPRS when im out and about, but dont want my phone doing things like connect to GPRS if I forget to sign out of messenger when ive been using wifi. When the phone switches itself off, it will connect via GPRS and download any messages emails.
I have put some dummy accounts in to stop it connecting but it keeps coming up with unknown application errors then although it does stop it costing me any download allowance / money.
Anyone ?

Maybe you did not get an anwer because you posted it in friday the 13th
But I want the same.
I am going abroad later this month, and I don't want any program to connect via GPRS.
It just costs too much.
So does anyone have a solution to disable connection by GPRS?
Hi all. All you do is press and hold the call end button for a few seconds and GPRS will be switched off.

I think you are mistaking the question.
If you press the Call End button for a few seconds, it indeed will end the GPRS session.
For that moment.
But if an application want to connect, it reconnects with GPRS just that easily.
And that's what you are afraid of, when roaming.
I really want to control the GPRS connection, off or on.
I use SPB GPRS Monitor. It adds a Icon to the menu bar at the top. You just tap on it, tap connect, and there you go. You can disconnect also. The program is skinnable as well! Moreover, it monitors your GPRS usage so you know when Vodafone is over charging you
cya
I also use GPRS monitor, but that's not the issue here.
I know how to disconnect, but I don't want GPRS to connect automatically, whatever condition.
Just do not connect via GPRS unless I tell the wizard to do so.
i know how you can do it!!!! Close messager and you will not have the problem!!!!! does not take brains! If you cant do that why the heck do you have a phone like this, which must be really too high tech for you!

Oh, okay....no clue in that case
The best way would be not to save the password to the connection, so it asks for it each time. That will stop it connecting, but it is inconvenient
Hope that helps

Hmm, this is no fun-man.
I ask a normal question, so please give a normal answer.
I have pushmail, newsreader, weatherpanel, Messenger and maybe some more progs who connect automatically over GPRS.
In holland that's no problem because I have a flat fee abo.
But when I go abroad I have to disable each and every application by hand.
(Roaming GPRS is sooo expensive )
So this device is definately not too high tech for me, but I am looking for an easy solution and that's to control GPRS by hand.
One program does it all for you:
Vijay555's VJVolubilis program!
Google search for Vijay555. Go to Releases. He's got a bunch of software written by him (a BIG THANK YOU to Vijay - Viva la ViJay!)
Instructions:
- Install cab file.
- Create a shortcut (using Ilauncher or any other programs that allows you to) and change the properties to wot you need
- In your case, use the properties - -gprson or -gprsoff or -gprstoggle
- You can set one icon to turn GPRS on and one to turn GPRS off in case you're worried about toggling it on instead of off.
Works great for me.
And don't forget to donate to Vijay!
Hope that helps.
Thanx, that's really looking promising.
It seems exactly what I was looking for.
I will test this prog asap.
i have been looking for a prog like this so I do not get price raped when my gprs drops out...I will test it out thanks.

I have found a free Wifi Hotspot - Softbank X01HT - Now what?

Hello all,
Having recently purchased a Softbank X01HT i decided to walk around my area and see what free hotspots are around. Boy there are plenty of unsecured ones!
This is the beginning of my problem.
After discovering them and hooking up to their network, then what?
When i try and open up Internet Explorer to take advantage of this new found freedom, i cant use it.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how i can set up my device to access this feature?
c'mon guys someone must use wifi to access hotspots....
nope, nobody here uses, wifi on their hermes at all, not a single person. if you had read the manual or even googled, you would have know that the wifi in the hermes is a total fake, every single person here uses their phone data plan.
turn on your wifi
goto start- setttings-connections- wifi
pick any avalable network
connect
start internet explorer
enjoy mobile pr0n

I think you have pay to use the hotspot, even though they look unsecure, you wont be able to do anything. I think you will need a user account and pwd.

i have already done this but for some reason it tries to log on via my service provider.
try to disable the service provider by removing their settings in "connections", or use NODATA app. from modoco.
Goto Comm Mananger. Then, turn Phone Off & Wireless On, then connect. For some reason, even when my hermes is connected to WLan, it still uses GPRS if not in flight mode, so switch phone off first! I have NO problems connecting to wifi with hermes at all!

you have to be kidding dont you !!
of course he is kidding
Just an update
Since upgrading to Shaps 4.31 rom the problem seems to have fixed itself.
That is when i do find an unsecured hotspot i can 'log' on and use the internet. its only when i havent got wifi that the phone tries to log on via the service provider.
thats all for your help
good to know. thanks for the update

how to kill GPRS?

hi, got a HTC kaiser last week, was working fine, internet, email, tomtom.
but a few days ago i put an orange sim card in and now half the time i try to access the internet in anyway it connects to GPRS instead of wifi despite me being only a few feet away from the router.
i don't want GPRS, i don't want to pay for it so i disabled GPRS under comms manager but as soon as i do the button flicks back over and it reconnects and only sometimes give me an option to disconnect.

sounds good, how do i do that?
it should automatically connect you to wifi. even if the gprs signal is on, it should still be connecting through wifi regardless.

the thing is i had credit/minutes on a simcard and after i checked my email and it connected/disconnected while i was fighting with it my credit went from £2.00 to £0.01
I am pretty sure ABACABB will do the trick.
abacabb?
i googled it aswell -_-

Easy
Start-settings-connections-connections again-manage existing connections-edit the one is active and change the values to anything you want.
Also as other members say there must be an app to do so, but I prefer to do it manually
Good luck,
