I'm planning on purchasing a Hermes next month and wondering if its worth getting the unlimitted data plan.
I"m a college student so no need for emediate connection to email or anythign business wise, basicly internet leisure.
So whats your advice, is it worth being connected 24/7? Will the battery hold? My brother has the nokia N80 in the middle east and he tells me that phone doesn't last half a day with 3g on, how about the hermes?
Also a main motivation for 3g for me is the video calling, but i don't know much about that, is it a device to device connection or does cingular need to set something up for it to work?(even if it is device to device, none of my friends have 3g so i see its 40 bucks to waste.) Any thoughts would be good
thanks
I am currently on Cingular with the TyTn and get a UMTS singal in my area about half the time I use it. I have the internet connection registry dealy set to always on, and i don't have any trouble with the battery.

wow, i never new such a data plan existed. I go well over 200 msgs a month so i htink i'm gonna do that plus th e$9.99 1000 texts,
Nope then you want the Media Max 1000
$29.99 MEdia Max 1000
1000 Messages $0.03/add'l (txt & mms)
Unlimited Data
Unlimited Cingular video
https://www.cingular.com/media/media_net_purchase
EVEN BETTER!!!
how come i never saw these before? i've been with cingular over 2 years now and i thought all they had was the unlimited data for 39.99 and the media works for 19.99 which only included 5mb. I used to have media works with my jam and i kept going over 5 MB and the messages allowed and i was hitting $60 to $80 in overages.
Thanks again, will definately subscribe to this plan in the next 3 days and use it with my wizard till i get the TyTn some time next month
Thanks again!
The Cingular messaging/data bundles are new for Q3 2006.
Hello All,
I am visiting Chicago and using my Tytn. The device rocks like no other. King of the kings basically when it comes to UMTS in Chicago. It is registering a speed of 2.04 mbps when I test the connection.
Gilbert
I can't wait till i get a hold of one!!
About the data plans, I just subscribed to the MEdia Max 1000 for $29.99 but whats the between that and Unlimited Data Access for PDA which is $39.99? When i click on it the explanation pop is blank.
I'm not complaining that MEdia Max 1000 is cheaper but are they gonna try to shaft me by saying I have a PDA and start billing me for KiloBytes? Or with the media net can i only access MEdia Net sites?
Where do you all get the Tytn? On ebay they are $800!!!
I live in UMTS territory so I would love to have one here.

@nickcerda:
So many questions.... so little time.....
Ok, you are accessing UMTS on Cingular with a standard SIM? If so this is good news because our rep was feeding me a line that a new "3G SIM" would be required to access UMTS.
I take it wap.cingular and/or isp.cingular are visible and can be connected to over UMTS correct? If so, which one are you using?
No, I am not using UMTS yet, just fantasizing.

Yes, you need the new 3G sim to access 3G, But the sim is free. Just go to any cingular store and tell them u need the 3g sim and they'll give it to and it takes about 5 min for it to activate.
It goes like this. wap.cingualr (media net) uses some form of compression and there is some problem with vpn's or something. isp.cingular (data connect or pda plan) loses the compression, and the vpn problem. I believe the problem comes in with the type of IP they assign. Technically you should be on PDA plan with a PDA, however my current phone according to Cingular is the 8125, and i still have the media net plan. in fact I bought my 8125 directly from Cingular. But I guess to answer your question as long as you don't use the isp.cingular you'll be fine. And for the record I have used both the compression does nothing at all to speed.
agreed, compression is worthless but....
did you get a 3G SIM from Cingular to run in your TyTN?
nickcerda: thanks for that info. so browsing sites like this isn't gonna be charged per kb? i just don't want them to be charging me when i've got the media max 1000
sleuth255: i don't have a TyTN but i do have the 3G simcard, i just went into a cingular shop and asked them for it and was out of there in 5 min.
@fone_fanatic:
I'll go try that tomorrow. If they cough one up then I'll push buy it now on a tytn..
push that button one more time for me
Actually, I gotta find out if it has A2DP first. TCPMP -> my iPAQ stereo headset is one of the most used apps on my 8125. I can't go back to wired... especially given the TyTN's non-standard connector...
With UMTS shoutcast should fly!
Yes I do have a 3g sim card. And like I said as long as you use the wap.cingular apn you will not be charged per kilobyte.
@nickcerda:
Tks for the info! My account can use wap or isp so it isn't an issue. I'm off to locate a 3G sim.
One more quick question (I already owe you a beer btw)
If you have a registry editor could you check to see if the following keys exist on your TyTN:
HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Bluetooth/A2DP
and
HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Bluetooth/AudioGateway

Sorry if you all already know this, but orange payg are offering unlimited gprs for only £1 per day, i've been using it for about 2 weeks and it's pretty good, it's a full data connection too so you can get emails or sync over the air etc. In my opinion the best part is that you can pick and choose when you want it.
yeah i'm on it too. The Orange Unlimited GPRS extra for £1 thing right?
People signing upwith Orange to get this extra,REMEMBER, the gprs extra runs out at midnight, regardless of what time you apply it!
Applying it at 23:00 is just plain stupid cos you'll have to re-apply the extra at 00:00 anyway.
I've got a contact stored on my XDA that is assigned to a speed dial key. When pressed, it automatically re-applies the extra.
To do the same, create a new contact & give it this phone number: 450p#p3p1p4p1p1
The call to 453 should take about 45 secs, after that your extra should be applied
THE GPRS DOES NOT INCLUDE DOWNLOADING OVER P2P PORTS!!! almost everything else works fine (ftp, http, https, msn messenger, e-mail-etc) but using p2p costs you money, regardless of whether the extra is applied or not.
anyone know of a PPC app that dials a contact at a scheduled time and disconnect after X seconds? would be real useful for this
does that mean i cud use skype on it?

No, gprs is to slow for skype. My T-mobile gprs is about 40-50kbits/s. (flat-fee for 9,50 euro's a month )
sorry but what why can i use?
im looking into all thsi mobile net stuff but need to find the facts before i lay out money
if i try to get info in store they just try and sell,me stuff i dont need
Well its about the same speed as dial up, so you can surf the net (albeit slowly) and you can use MSN and collect email. its useful but its no replacement for wifi or 3G. I use it when I'm at work (i do a lot of waiting around)
Are you sure you are right ???? GPRS
Ive just picked up an orange sim and yes the £1.00 per day unlimited offer still stands but its for orange world , not other services . I thought from the original thread that this would give me GPRS access to the web ?
Can you confirm what service you have been getting with it ?
Im looking for a basic internet connection I dont mind slow but I do mind £2.35 and upwards per Meg .!!!
Any thoughts
Astro1
I can confirm (with 390 megs of GPRS used under my belt) that it works with any http address.
Haha, if the service worked with P2P, orange'd have been raped for bandwidth by now.
I've been thinking about switching from Tmobile to Cingular to benefit from their UMTS network.
Since I already have a TyTN I figured I would order a 3125 and get their Unlimited Smartphone Connect Plan.
I was wondering if this would work with the TyTN and what the settings are.
From what I've been reading online it seems that the Smartphone plan uses Cingular's wap proxy. I was wondering if this would affect the 3G performance.
I wouldn't use the TyTN for tethering (my monthly usage runs around 200-250MB, mostly mail and RSS).
Smartphone Connect Plan
I have the TyTn and have added the Cingular Extended Roms and all is working well... You can add the Cingular Wap settings via cab and depending on the Rom that you have installed, you may or may not have issues with the Express Mail settings and Phone Keypad...
Took me several days to figure out the right combination of Rom and Extended Roms, but I am happy at the moment...
debonairone
I thought I could manually configured the connection... I already have 2 mail accounts setup (one is my work Exchange (push) the other is my personal pop)... don't care much about XpressMail.
I'm running WM6 latest rom.
-If you need XpressMail, go with the SmartPhone connect.
-If you want 200 text messages/month, go with the MediaMax 200 Bundle
Both of those are $19.99, and give you unlimited internet
If you need VPN or isp.cingular, you'll have to get the more expensive PDA connect (or laptop connect) plans.
3G speed is not much worse on wap.cingular if it's worse at all. It's not difficult to setup the data accounts. There are actually very good tutorials on Cingular's website in the help section.
Thanks!
I have no use for the VPN at this point. Xpress mail may be a nice addition since right now I am pulling mail from my personal pop every 30min. Having the push option on this account as well would be nice.
I was just worries that the Smartphone connect plan would not work on a TyTN and that the wap proxy would make things slower (or prevent access to certain pages) but it looks like I'm getting a much cheaper deal yet retain pretty much all the functions I need!
Hi, I have the smartphone connect plan and am running it on my 8525. I bought the phone off eBay new in December and didn't want to get locked into a data contract for 2 years since my contract was up, so I bought the device outright and added this data plan.
I got the smartphone connect unlimited plan. I have been using this since then with good results. On my Cingular account section it actually shows that I have the 8525.
I am actually using it right now as a wireless modem. I have checked the speed and it's around 750 to 1mb overall. I believe it is using the wap.cingular and have full function. I have it pushing my email through my works exchange server and also use it for my personal msn account.
I am on the Cingular MediaNet plan....$19.99 works great here. One thing I would like to point out is that if you have t-mobile...you can just get the $4.99 t-zone..and you can surf all you want and checking emails. Too bad T-mobile's data speed is slow otherwise I would had kept my service.
wow thanks for all the tips! I didn't realize I could get the much cheaper tmobile plan as well.... i'm currently paying $30/month for unlimited data plus wifi which I never use anyways...
In any case from speaking with a few people i think the media max 200 seems like the smartest options as it offers unlimited data plus some text messages and i could use their media (TV) features if needed...
I just gotta figure out how to get the plan since it doesn't seem available to purchase with the Cingular 3125.
You can just add the features/plans you want online after you sign up for Cingular billing at the website.
I used to use T-Mobile as well, and I thought the $4.99 plan only gave you port 80 (http)? I was on an old $19.99/month plan which was unlimited GPRS/EDGE with no Hotspot, which I don't see as an option anymore.
Ok I can't get straight awnsers out of cingular so xda to the rescue again. I want unlimited internet with the ability to stream via orb and need text messaging. I have no need or want to tether. So will a media max plan work or do I have to have the unlimited pda data plan?
I have the old Media Works Plan, (1500 txt, 200 MMS, and Unlimited internet, 19.99) and i have no problem on my 8525.
Do you use internet alot
yes, use it with IM+ for instant messenging. and web browsing
You are "supposed" to have the PDA Connect plan for an 8525, however the truth is that any of the cheaper MEdia Net plans will work.
But getting a rep to put you on that plan can prove difficult. Easiest thing to do is to keep a cheap/free 3G phone on hand like the LG CU-400 or 500. Put the IMEI for that LG on file with Cingular then they won't be the wiser. Just make sure you use the [email protected] login and not the [email protected] one.
can i not just add and change features via my account on the website?
Yes, you should be able to go to OLAM and change the feature there. Much easier than going through CS.
one other quick question. Will the media works package be able to use umts when it arrives.

That's a really good question! But I just read over at the cingular forums that with the mediamax bundle there is NO streaming of audio/video through medianet. but i connect with wap.cingular every time with my pdaconnect plan. I almost changed it but worried about this... anyone had any experience with this?
I have the PDA Unlimited plan for $40 and I have not had any problems yet.
Cingular dataplan
I have the mediamax unlimited 200 text plan for 19.99 and can do pretty much anything I want with it except connect to certain vpn's. I tried getting the rep at the store and the CS on the phone to change it from the PDA unlimited plan they autostuck me with, but they wouldnt do it so I did it myself online.

@shogunmark: do you anything about limit for unlimited accounts - when flags are rised?
I am considering swith to Cingular from T-Mobile. But I use much data - around 80-100 MB per mo. on TyTN and additionaly 200 MB on Network Data Card - same SIM card.
I was told that I should go for Laptop Connect Data plan but it is almost 60 USD per mo. - in my opinion it is too much.
So with mediamax - will I be safe?

Hi! I bought a vario II second hand and I sticked a t-mob brand new payg sim. I register it and topped up with my credit card and only used for internet ever since! now I have been surfing like mad and downloading at least 300mb and my balance still £4.99p how can it be possible? I live in london if some one want take a look to it
I'm guessing you're in for one hell of a bill coming your way eventually. Using data without having a data plan is billed at a ridiculously high amount.
I don't see how they can bill you when you're on PAYG but just don't take the p*** and hope noone notices
Smiffy.
pay as you go does have a data plan, its automatic, basically once you hit £1 thats it you dont get charged anymore that day, meant to be a 40mb limit, but my mates never had issues.
as for your not being charged, dunno about that one!
I'm about 600MB right now... and and my calling credit is now £3.95!!!! hell where my £1.05p went to? shall I phone up and complain? LOL
I've just registered and it's show this does any one understand this? look like I've got 10GB :-O Recent Use

I use this everyday. I have a T-Mobile PAYG and I connect it to my laptop for a broadband connection. as long as I'm not connected exactly at midnight it's fine. T-Mobile claim you can't do this, but I managed to download SQL Server 2005 SP2 (250MB) in one hit. I stay connected all day when I'm on customer sites and connect again when I get home.
And I can use my VOIP account (again T-Mobile say I can't) through it.
do you guys get HSDPA speeds or just 3g?
I get 3G. 10Mb connection with download speeds ranging from 42k - 120kb ps
your reply is a contradiction in terms
I have a May Monthly contract with T-Mobile, love it, can use web n walk to downloads loads and loads of movies on my laptop while i m on the move, usually download about 1GB a day.

Nobody would help you to STEAL
which phone plan are you on? Please note that of you are say telstra or virgin mobile customer you are always able to get hsdpa connectio without first signing up for their data plan. In this case, all data usage will be charged at the ultra expensive rate of about 1.5 cents per kb. This is also the rate one pays for exceeding the allocated quota under a data plan. I know there was a guy with a 1 gb plan who was billed about 15k in a month for exceeding his plan by 7 percent.
I hope your telco has not just stolen from YOU instead of the other way round!
am using 3G's 99 plan for now.
i have been checking my bill's. it didnt show a big rise
i think i may keep look
perhaps you should do some research here http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-threads.cfm?f=124 aboutdata plans in australia.
If you are on the "3" network you are roaming anywhere outside the limited network and charges are then anything but free
BTW I also upgraded to the WM6 and have a virgin (only 300mb )data plan and have no connection troubles
I'm a bit lucky that I got the 1gb data pack for $10 from virgin before they changed the plan offer.
I normally use about 800mb per month, but I still watch my usage with a gprs monitor. The penalty for exceeding the quotas is scary, judging by the postings to the whirlpool forum. I'm frankly quite concern for people who innocently step into the trap of using it thinking it is free,or carelessly exceed the quota. The rate of 1.5 cents per kb is day light robbery. Display of one web page could cost close to $10!
