Smartskey issue - frustrating! - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario General

Yesterday I did a hard-reset on my device. I'd planned it all very well, and had all my apps and stuff ready on my MiniSD card (under a folder called 'PPC Install') so I could quickly re-install and get everything up to speed. However, something happened when I installed Smartskey. I copied it to the Windows folder, and ran it, and everything seemed fine, but now every time the device wakes up I get a popup:
Notification Error:
Cannot execute "\Storage Card\PPC Install\smartskey.exe"
I've checked the Windows\Startup folder for invalid shortcuts, and searched the registry for any reference to smartskey.exe, but to no avail. So I can't understand for the life of me why it's starting up with this error!!
Any ideas on how to stop it happening?

Aha. Found this thread which might have the answer.

Installing .cab files (New to WM5)

Sorry for this stupid question but this is my third day of having a windows mobile 5 xda (the cingular 8125) and I'm having problems installing .cab files. I started with the "DJVW HTC Wizard Optimizer 2.0.cab". I moved the cab to the root directory of the device, tapped on it, and it went through the progress bar, told me that it had installed, but then when I went to look for the newly installed program, i couldn't find it anywhere. I also tried this with a few games and other apps. What am I doing wrong that it keeps telling me that it installed fine, but I can't find the programs. Thanks for your help in this.

You may have tried but have you used explorer to check if the files have installed under "Programs"? I've often seen cab files install but the shortcuts not get installed though the programs are there. If you find them then connect to your PC and use explore from Activesync, create shortcust and drop them in the windows\start menu folder.
Yeah, I have tried that... I even tried to a search for the files to no avail. Any other ideas? I really appriciate the help.
You've got me stumped. Personally I always drop the cabs on the SD card and install from there thats the only thing I can see different. Maybe it's a problem with dropping it in the root directory - have you tried dropping it under the programs folder and then installing?
correct me if i'm wrong, but doesn't the wizard optimizer cab just tweak a few settings/registey values? a cab of this nature will not show up in your programs list because it isn't a program, it just changes stuff. this is normal, the same thing happened when i installed some camera tweaking cabs. so the cab has worked fine, done its job, there is nothing else you need to do.

Every time I turn on it says "Cannot execute iMusic.EXE

I blame this stupid program called "iMusic" (nothing to do with Apple).
I installed it, assuming it is WM5 compatible, but it isn't (and that's another story), so I uninstalled it. But now every time I turn on the Universal a Notification Error pops up with the message "Cannot execute \Program Files\iMusic\iMusic.EXE"
It's still there after soft-resetting; and no, I'm not going to even consider doing a hard-reset for this!
I've already done a search for "iMusic" in PHM RegEdit but nothing was found; no iMusic related files in the Windows\StartUp folder.
Any solutions?
Download Memmaid or sktools and check your notification queue. There you will find an entry for the power on event (probably). Just delete it.

Never mind - I'm going to flash the Qtek AKU2 ROM anyway, but thanks Vijay.

PLEASE HELP TMAIL Will Not close!!!!

Hi everybody I have a huge irritating problem. I have a t-mbile mda and I have the latest rom and radio installed. After a soft reset everything boots up fine then after a few hours the tmail.exe. opens on the screen. I go to start menu settings click on memory and stop the tmail form running and bam it opens on its own again almost immediatley. Ive tried task managers and nothing seems to keep this tmail from opening on the today screen. I know it runs in the process area, but it opens itself after a few hours. Please help.
I cant close this app.
Have you tried checking the notification queues to see if it had itself inside there?

Hey thanks for the help. I tried that too. Didnt work either, after a few hours tmail popped up and would'nt let me close it.
I even did a hard reset and it still popped up and would'nt close.
I installed everything on my storage card but I didnt do a format on the card I just reinserted after the hard reset and created shortcuts from programs that were installed on the card.
I think if this happens again I will format the card and do a hard reset and do a reinstall of everything.
I was just hoping someone out there had the same problem.

Problem with pre-installed soft

Hello!
Does anyone have ideas about following subject: Word Mobile and Media Player (that preinstalled) do not work properly. Word refuses to open any doc file, even create a new one saying "cannot open the document because of the problemt with it" (or someting like this), mediaplayer simply does not start saying nothing at all and, of course, does not open files, associated with it.
That situation apeared after soft reset, when both applications were running. (Reason of the reset is - IE hang up).
Please help me to find any way to make that progs work without hard-resetting the system.
Maybe there are any common for that progs registry entries or smth like this?
Did u tried another soft reset?
Of course! Soft reset, turning off and on! Nothing happens. The problem remains unsolved.
Does anybody have any other ideas? Please, help!!!
word seems to keep a record of previously opened files...and if u move the templates (in my documents folder) word also gives the same error...i dunno exactly what i did to solve it but now is working in my case...i did 2 things and it started to work, dunno exactly wich one solved it or in what order i did it:
- copied a .txt from desktop and tryed to open it with pocket word edited it and saved it...
- tryed to open my docs\templates\blank document.dot from within total commander...

Problem with setting ringtones, 3 files have corrupted settings...help please.

Hi there all, I noticed that the ringtones from the my ringtones folder from my sdhc card no longer show in the drop down list in the sounds and notifications part of the settings now so I looked a bit closer and noticed that it was set to Ring-WindowsMobile... I clicked ok to look at the my ringtones folder on my sdhc card but it would not close the settings... so I changed the ringtone and voila it closed and would work ok and the ringtone I selected (Pour Elise) would still show up ok... so I went to my ringtones and selected a file to use as ringtone (hold stylus on the file name then select) but the ringtone simply reverted back to the corrupt one... I noticed then that there are 3 files that show up twice in the list (all with Ring- as a prefix and called Ring-WindowsMobile, Ring-Vision and Ring-Standard)... now when I try to preview each it tells me that the file is corrupt although I can play it in Coreplayer ok. I tried to delete the files but they are read only or somesuch and cant be deleted. I tried a softreset and nothing... I used sktools to do a clean but still nothing... how can I get rid of these files and re instate my sdhc ringtones...?
Just bumping this up in case anyone missed it.... cheers again for any help in deleting these files... perhaps someone knows a program that will get rid of them with extreme prejudice thus over riding that annoying cant delete them cos they are read only or protected or what ever...
Ok since I cant figure this out and there are no suggestions forthcoming, a hard reset it is to see if that dont fix it... cheers
I had a problem with a Tomtom mapsettings.cfg file that my XP PC said was corrupt and couldn't delete.
I politely asked Resco Explorer to delete it on the phone, and Resco said fine, no problem...the file was deleted.
Ok installed Resco and tried to delete, didnt work, renamed the files and tried to delete... woo hoo it worked... no wait the files are still there in the windows directory... doh!!! oh well hard reset it is... many thanks for the advice...
You might want to think about backing up the remainder of your card and formatting it again.
Mine was a 16GB card which started with the mapsettings.cfg corrupting (several times - I learnt to take a backup of it into main memory). Then when I tried to archive the card files I found several more corruptions. I simply deleted everything and started again, but didn't re-format.
I noticed more recently that some of my Sprite backups were failing to restore but ignored it, assuming they were just glitches.
Last week I was messing with other ROMs, so I took TWO backups (Sprite and Resco, knowing the Sprite ones were proving a bit flaky). When I tried to restore back data after flashing back to original ROM I found BOTH backups were corrupt. Furthermore, I found the whole card was unreadable and I couldn't access any data on it.
I wish now I had reformatted the card while it was still partially working. Now it is totally stuffed and I can't rescue it at all.
In all my years of geekdom and gadgeteering, this is the worst nightmare I have ever had (four manual rebuilds in a week...ouch!).
It is worth considering...
Thanks for the tips Mr Anderson... I ended up hard resetting and once I did that the ringtones were ok and I could access my ringtones too...
