im using sprite back up, and it keeps failing when i restore.
can anyone recommend something better?
thanks
SPB
SPB seems to work fine, provided you install it on the device and not the PC card. What is annoying is that there is no error message when you run it off the SD card, it just doesn't restore properly. It seems to work fine otherwise. I use it pretty much because I create a backup before installing software, then if I don't like it, I do a hard reset and restore from the backup, so I use it pretty often.
It has one other feature worth noting. If I need to roll back several days, I can install the settings from that time, then the files and calendar items from a more recent backup. That way, only settings changed in the last few days are lost.
I back up to the SD card but periodically, and manually, move the old backups to my PC. SPB automatically makes a backup every night (stored on the SD card) and keeps the most recent three nights' worth.
Still, I learned the hard way that it won't run off the SD card properly, and had to rebuild the device. (I did get files and PIM items, though.) The silver lining was that I used the opportunity to upgrade my ROM.
spb hangs on me, during start up.
it just stays frozen on the today screen...
sucks...
That happened to me,
Did you have the program installed on the SD card?
There was a bug, allegedly fixed now, that caused it to restart another backup after making a backup. This could be interrupted.
You might try version 1.5 that just came out, but others like Sprite. I didn't like Sprite because it had conniptions over the fact that I sync with two pcs.

I'm coming from a Treo 650, which when it was synced saved all of the phone settings as well as the normal data exchanged when a sync is done. This came in very handy when I had to get a replacement Treo because all I had to do was sync the new phone and all of my previous settings were there.
In trying to figure out why the wi-fi on my Wizard is not working I've tried several different firmwares without any success. I'm going to take the phone to a T-Mobile store tonight to see if they'll exchange it for me. I've made a lot of configuration settings in the phone that are going to be a pain to reset again (after having done it numerous times with different firmware versions). Is there a way to backup and restore all of the phones settings at once? I assume that this would involve backing up and restoring the phone's registry. Is it as simple as copying the registry off the phone with something like Total Commander and then putting that registry back (with the same firmware and software, of course) on the new phone?
I tried spb Backup recently and it seems to restore everything. They have got a free trial for like 30 days, which should be enough for your purpose, but you need a mini SD to backup to.

I do not know if any issues arise when you try to restore to a different device than the one the backup was originating from. I *guess* it should work alright, but you can ask the folks at spb. They seem to be pretty responsive.

Yes use spb backup, registry backup alone will not do the job. Spb backup will work fine as long as device is the same model and the ROM is the same.
Full restore
I use SPB Backup and have done several full restores. When I install software, I first do a backup, install teh software, and if it doesn't work well (an all too common phenomenon), I do a hard reset and restore, since it is hard to remove software otherwise.
No settings need changing, it is a full backup.
SPB backup has a reset problem written about elsewhere, but mostly it has worked for me. More importantly, when I had to do a hard reset, I was able to restore without difficulty. (The only times I've had to do a hard reset, however, was when SPB backup got in a reset cycle.)
This time, however, was different. Partway into the soft reset, the screen went blank and unresponsive. Something was happening because the phone light came on later, but it stayed unresponsive. After a hard reset, it would work normally, but when I tried to restore from a backup, it didn't work -- the same problem reappeared. This happened even with old backups, including a backup that I had used successfully in the past.
Is there some possibility that T-Mobile updated something without my knowledge? I don't see how an old backup that worked before wouldn't work now.
One thing that might be related: SPB was going to the web in the process of performing the restore. When I shut off GPRS, the program asked for permission, saying it needed something related to Pocket Plus.
In any event, I used my inability to restore from my backup (of course I could get my files and PIM data, just the settings wouldn't restore) as a chance to upgrade to 2.24 -- thanks Xelecin!!!.
Here is what I learned. Don't run SPB Backup from the SD card. Even if it seems to work and gives no error messages, it may not be working.
SPB Diary and SPB Today require a lot of space and time. TodayAgenda gives much of the same functionality as SPB Diary

and I like some aspects of it better. It is even free.
Hello, everyone!
I've done some digging on this topic, and found some bits and pieces of information, but nothing definitive; so I'm gonna ask what I think is a really basic question...
...now that I've finally got my PPC-6800 just how I like it, how do I (i.e., what's the best way to) make a full and complete backup of it? That is to say, I simply wanna plug it in, and tell it to dump EVERYTHING onto my PC (which I also backup regularly). I want all data files, apps, settings, preferences, etc. backed up, so that if I ever have to do a hard-reset, or if I ever drop it in the toilet and have to buy another one, all I would need to do is plug that one up, and do a full restore so that it would be just like it was without my having to fuss with anything. This full backup may or may not have to include info stored on the micro SD card.
Sounds like a simple enough request, doesn't it? Well, can it be done? And if so, how? With something I that came with it (like ActiveSync), or will I need to purchase a 3rd party software app?
This can't possibly be that hard, can it???
Any guidance in this area is VERY much appreciated!
Thanks in advance!!!
i use Spb Backup, which does exactly what you are asking. You get your phone how you want it, make a backup, then you can go back to that point whenever and it is exactly the same.

Actually, I use Spb Clone which I think goes one step forward where you can load your image to several phones at once. Same great company.
Thanks a bunch, mac4lyfe and Sturatt!
I checked out the website, and you're correct...it looks like just what I was looking for. One question, though. I keep reading that it makes a backup onto the phone itself! It looks like it makes some sort of a self-extracting executable that is copied to the phone, and then can be run if you need a restore. I'm not sure how much sense it makes to put the backup file on the phone...what if the phone is lost, destroyed, or unbootable? So my question is, can you set up the backup so that the phone is backed up to your laptop or desktop PC? That way the backup file would be separated from the phone, and then could be used if and when the phone needed hard-resetting or replacing. I can't find anything in the documentation to let me know if this is possible.
Thanks again for your expertise!!!
sweet, thx man..
spb backup only backs up the main device memory, not the storage card. so it puts the backup exe on the storage card, which you can then move to your computer.
I use Sprite Backup, same concept, they also have a nice backup file browser for the PC that lets you get inidividual items out of the backup file should you just need one particular item. There is also the option to backup directly to the PC instead of the card with Sprite.
I have been using sprite backup.
the application performs a scheduled backup (password protected) to the sd card.
sometimes I manually backup just the personal databases as a standalone.
I manually transfer the entire sd card to the pc every once and a while (cause depending on the card usage may make the card die sooner).... can't wait till sprite can do this automagically via wifi.
the only time I had any issues is with sprite bacup is with the rom upgrade.... even though they say it can be done... it didn't take, from what I gather its best to reinstall all from scratch once a rom update is performed anyways.....

Not true. You can also have SPB backup all the contents of your storage card if you wish.
Of course, if you start getting backups that are huge, it becomes difficult to manage and takes FOREVER.
I use SPB Backup, and I have it scheduled to automatically run a full backup of my phone at 4am each morning. It backs up the entire main memory, and a few select folders on my storage card. All backups are kept in a folder on my storage card called.... Backups.
Each backup file for me generally averages about 40MB compressed.
I keep 5 days worth of backups, and once a week, I transfer one of these onto my computer for safekeeping as well. I also have it soft reset my phone each night so in the morning, I'm set to go.
I used sprite backup, it also works well, but I like SPB more. Highly recommend it.
Hi, All
Had my touch about 3 weeks, everything has been great till now. Messaging (Email) suddenly stopped working, I can't open my email program, or text. It's just vanished. Any ideas? Tried reboot, (removed battery), even tried to restore with SPB which I installed yesterday and backed up. I'm new to this forum, but I know this is the best around for technical info. Thanks for any help.

Well, I can't imagine what caused it, but it sounds like you need to do a hard reset. That will get the device back to factory settings. You'll have to reload all of your stuff, first, and you'll want to backup your contacts.
When you're ready, while holding down the green and red buttons (Call and End), push the reset button with your stylus (it takes a bit of dexterity). You should be prompted to do a hard reset, and that should take care of the problem.
As for what caused it, i have no idea. Even if you could fix it somehow, you're still probably better off just reseting everything.
Thanks, Dave,
I guess I figured I would have to do that, but hoped I wouldn't. Between the SPB backup on my data card, and the customizations saved on my PC, I can get it back to where it was. I've spent hours and hours getting this thing exactly the way I wanted it, but that's life....

Sorry I missed this... may have been able to save you from hard reset. This happened to me once and if I reacall correctly it was an SD card issue. The cause... I had attachments going to the SD and the folder for the inbox disapeared. Why? No clue. Once I copied it back (from a backup) messaging started to work again.
There is another issue where the SD looks like it has been corrupted. All of the folder name look wacky and some are missing. I cant remember the exact sequence of events in my case but since deselecting "When available, use this storage card to store attachments" I have not had seen either problem.
fyi for the future.
Thanks for the info, SHWA311. I will check out that card issue. I did the hard reset, luckily had all my hacks and downloads saved, just took me a couple of hours to re-input my contacts. I tried everything to save them, but my only SPB backup was made after the problem, only didn't realize it.

you didn't have to hard reset... could have just deleted inbox folder on your sd card and mail/text program would start working again. i had the same issue before (as have many others).
Thanks varunb007,
I will file that under my "relax and wait for some more responses" memory bank!~

Im running 6/20 Mightyrom and COOKIES HOME and LOCK SCREEN MOD. I have been using SPB backup and set it to automatically backup every day at 2AM to my storage card. it has been working... HOWEVER.. in the past few days it will no longer do an automated backup UNLESS I have the phone ON and UNLOCKED.... if the phone is off, it will wake up, start the backup and time out. I tested it last night without COOKIES LOCK SCREEN usng the regular WM lock screen and same issue...this WAS working before...
Does anyone know how to fix this? Thanks...
I had a similar issue with SPB BU.
I solved the problem by unchecking the folders where bu's were stored and by unchecking backing up the back ups.
Mine is set to save 3 backups and truncate all others. But when the program was trying to back up a back up, it locked up.
Thanks.. I already have mine set that way and it still times out...
any other ideas?
UPDATE: after I wrote the message, I decided to create a NEW FOLDER on the storage card and send all backups to it.. it worked.. Must be something in the old folder... We'll see if it keeps working......
and you have it set NOT to back up the folder where the BU's are being stored, right?
I am nearly certain that was the problem. SPB BU was caught in its own web of backing up its earlier back ups.
