Data's working. Calls and texts aren't. - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro General

I've just bought myself a second-hand O2 XDA Exec. I've unlocked it (thanks Buzz!), and everything was looking ok. In fact I'm typing this via my 3G connection. WiFi works well and the signal strength is great.
Unfortunately I can't make or receive phone calls. And I can't send or receive text messages either. All data services work perfectly, ActiveSync connects with my exchange server for Push mail etc, and the internet works perfectly with all 'connected' programs and pIE, etc.
When I do try to make a phone call, the dialler app just says "Dialling..." for a few seconds and then "Call Ended" There's never a dial/ring tone and when attempting to send a text message, I just get the notification: "Your message could not be sent". If I try to make a Video Call, I get a message to say that "Call Bars are active" despite the fact that my SIM works for video calls on other phones.
Have I bought a dodgy phone? Is this how a nicked phone behaves, or is there something else wrong with it? What baffles me is that I can use the net and use e-mail as much as I want, but phone calls are impossible. My T-Mobile SIM works in my other 3G phones, so I'm confused....I've tried various ROM's but they all behave the same way. Oh, and every time I turn the phone on, the STK server throws up a "Message Sent" dialogue. (Which I'm sure my old JasJar never did)
Help! Have I failed to sim-unlock this exec properly, is it nicked, or is it just knackered? I'll be off to the shop for a replacement soon, if I can't get this sorted out...

The first thing I'd try would be a hard reset. Don't know if there's another solution. Hopefully someone else will have another solution!

Tried that, and I've re-flashed with the latest Qtek and i-mate ROM's.
I think I'll have another go at "unlocking" the SIM cad, just to be sure, and I'll try another different ROM. But I think this'll end up being taken back for a refund unless anyone can give me some inspirational advice!

Since you say you've tried various ROMS, advising you to hard reset is pretty pointless.
The call and text behaviour you are getting is typical of a phone which is lost/stolen and barred. I always assumed that a barred phone would also not be able to use gprs & 3G. The wifi would still work though.
Are you able to use T-Mobiles data connection? What happens if you call the phone?

Nope, 3g networks defo don't check the imei register when you log on. ( Shhhh, the operators don't want you to know)
Dunno about a GPRS connection but it sounds like the handset is barred.
Richard

If I call the phone, a lady tells me that "calls are not being connected to this number at present". If I put the SIM into another phone, it instantly starts working again.
Tried a Vodafone SIM, same story. Also tried a Tesco mobile SIM (which piggybacks on the O2 network) and that's even worse, there's no recognition of any network at all when I put that one in.
I think this thing is going back to the shop at lunchtime...

Well, CheckMEND says that my IMEI has NOT been reported as lost or stolen, but I assume that's just for people who register and use www.immobilise.com rather than the network operator themselves?
I may give O2 a call to see what they say before I go shouting at the store that sold it to me, but I think that the only answer is that it's been blocked somehow. Hmmm. You'd think there would be an obvious way of finding out for sure...
EDIT: OK, O2 wouldn't tell me anything, it's confidential you see...
Took the phone back to the shop and they reckon the previous owner probably didn't pay is phone bill, so O2 barred the phone, therefore it wouldn't have been reported as lost/stolen. Which makes sense.
At least I now have my money back, and now I know that barred phones are only barred for voice calls, not Data connections too...never knew that!
Off to find another Universal to buy now...

Unable to make or receive calls

I wonder if anyone can help with a fault on my M3100. So far I've searched this website for answers with no luck. I have Hard Reset the phone, upgraded the Radio, all without any luck.
About 6 days ago my M3100 suddenly stopped being able to make or receive calls. Whenever I try to dial out the call drops out before being established, and if I try to call in to the phone the caller receives a series of beeps.
At first it seems to be a SIM problem, but the Vodaphone SIM is fine in any other phone. If I put my Orange SIM in the phone it just comes up as "No Service".
I'm at the end of the line in what to do and it doesn't seems to make any sense.
Any comments, suggestions, advice or help very much appreciated.
..... Further symptom details:
I can send and receive text message with my Vodaphone SIM installed and access WiFi and GPRS networks. Orange SIM won't connect at all! Both SIMS work fine in a standard phone ! Only clue I can think of here is that the Vodaphone SIM is UMPTS and GSM where the Orange is GSM only. The spare phone I tested them in was GSM only.
Could the GSM part of the M3100 be stuffed ?
I'm stumped for the time being!! It doesn't seem to make any logical sense. Maybe any of you who know the in's and out's of how the device communicates might find some clues in that...
Heeeeelp !
More details..
I've just added a few more details on the symtoms.. maybe the few extra clues might yeild some thoughts from someone !
Have you checked the band selection in Settings > Phone?
Is it possible that the phone could have become blacklisted? How long have you had it? How did you buy it? (This is probably NOT it, since the text still works.)
Have you tried a tweaker to enable HSPDA?
Had the phone for over 12 months so Blacklisted shouldn't be the issue. I've tried all the band selections including Auto but no luck.
Haven't tried the Tweaker... do you have any details on that...
Up until it suddenly stopped working it worked on all networks..
Another possible clue is that I was "Roaming" in France for a month and it was there that I made my last successful call. I have UK SIMS... I have an Australian SIM which I'll try now to see if that makes any difference..
Tried an Australian SIM roaming in the UK ! The service connects on two available networks,Vodaphone and TMobile but not on Orange and O2 (like with the Orange UK SIM). Same fault as the before with the networks it will connect to.
This seems to eliminate the SIM or Network being the fault and isolate the fault to the Device...
probably not the issues, but worth a try?
I live in a very strong 3G + HSPDA ares, but cant make or recieve anycalls tho texts work on T-mobile, i need to have my phone in 2G mode, and calls work fine???
If i leave my house and go a few miles 3G works as it should able to call and recieve etc!
Can't seem to work out how to force the phone onto 2G or 3G ... if anyone can advise I'll give that a try!
I have had very similar problems to this.
Please see my post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=325149
I do think this is some sort of network problem as after I posted the issues in the thread above, I left home and travelled about 6 miles and the signal came back and the phone worked fine.
Today, I have been able to make and receice calls but all of a sudden I got cut off from a call then could not make or receive calls (incoming goes straight to voicemail).
I can however use my Orange SIM without problem and both Vodafone and Orange SIMs work fine in other phones.

You can also go into Settings > Phone > Band.
If the band tab does not appear (to the right of the network tab), then you may need to do a registry tweak.
From the very helpful wiki:
Enable/Disable GSM/UMTS Band Selection
Cingular kindly disables anything useful about the network on the 8525. To enable the Band Selection Tab on your Phone settings page, set the following:
[\HKLM\Software\OEM\PhoneSetting\]
"ShowUMTSBandPage"=dword:00000001
To disable, simply clear the value to 0:
[\HKLM\Software\OEM\PhoneSetting\]
"ShowUMTSBandPage"=dword:00000000

Have travelled outside England again this week and... well the phone works fine roaming on my UK Vodaphone SIM. Seems very ODD.. only thing I can put any logic to is a problem with the GSM part of the phone. It's working here in Stockholm on the 3G network no problem.
Anyone advise how I force the phone to be on GSM and 3G so I can test this theory. The BAND settings under SETTINGS>PHONE don't seem to give you this control over how it connects..
Hey i got the same problem anyone solved it yet!
Hi Sunnyb1
Since my last post I returned to England where the phone was useless. No SIM cards would work, some would not register at all but my Vodaphone SIM seemed to register but as before it would not receive calls, nor could I make calls out.
Now I'm in Australia with an Australian SIM card. NO PROBLEMS AT ALL !!
The phone works just fine !!
It's a mystery indeed...
Without any knowledge of the ins & Outs of how a SIM card / Network / and the phone work together it's impossible for me to arrive at any conclusive logic.
Hopefully someone might stand up to the plate and offer some explanation !
Anyone from HTC out there ??????

I got the phone and it was working perfectly on Orange then i tried unlocking it and ever since it has come up with "NO Service" like you everytime i put a Orange Sim in the phone it does not show up.. but when i put a Vodafone sim it works perfectly i tried reflashing the radio's many times
I unlocked this particular phone 6months before this problem showed up so I don't think the Unlock on it's own is the cause. What's particularly baffling is that a SIM may not work with the phone in one country.. but in another it works fine.
..... another country that is !
Hey Steve i have found out what the problem is after hours of research
I found this of another website
Orange & O2:
If you place an active orange or
O2 sim into a blacklisted handset you
phone will not show any signal strength
at all! If the handset is a Nokia then a
"SIM card registration failed" message
will also be displayed. If your handset is an
Ericsson then an "Invalid Mobile" message
will be displayed. For most other manufacturers
the handset will simply show no signal!
Vodafone & T-Mobile
If you place an active Vodafone or T-Mobile sim into a blacklisted handset, the phone will appear to function perfectly UNTIL you try to make an outgoing call. When you try to call out from the handset you will hear a sequence of beeps and then the call will be dropped!!
........
This means the handset you got is stolen or someone has blacklisted it ... i got mine of EBAY! and reading that i figured that it is stolen
It wont work in the UK but it will work everywhere else in the world
Mmmm... that's interesting Sunnyb1. If my phone is blacklisted then happened in JULY this year which was 8 months after I bought the phone. I bought the phone legit .
Can anyone advise what the "Blacklisting" process is.. I assume its done by using the IMEI number.
Who is the rightful owner of a handset and can any phone be blacklisted by anyone, and possibly by mistake ?
Would unlocking the phone from Orange cause a phone to be blacklisted ??
How can you "Un-blacklist" a phone.
Answered my own question here......
This website seems to have the answers
http://www.unlockme.co.uk/blacklist.html
OK... still on this thread. Can anyone advise how you find out which network in the UK has blocked your an IMEI number. I gather any of the UK networks can block any IMEI and it's not unknown for errors to be made. But only the network that blocks the IMEI can Unblock it.
Thought I'd post this before waiting forever for some call centre dimwit to give me the runaround.
Thanks...

MDA Vario 2 not calling or texting but doing everything else

I purchased an MDA Vario 2 off a 3rd party seller on Amazon just before christmas, when i put my T Mobile PAYG sim in it did everything except call and text, it can still connect to internet through wifi and gprs/3g and do everything else, just no calls or texts, when I try to call it from my landline I get 'calls to this number are currently not being connected'. When i try to call out, I get 'call ended' on 0:00 time when i try to text, it just wont send. I've done a hard reset, called T Mobile to check if it's blacklisted which it isn't, tried a different T Mobile sim and attempted to flash a ROM, I don't really know if it worked or not and when I've been trying to do it recently, i connect via activesync, run the program downloaded from the T mobile website, the phone goes into the 3 colour screen with USB at the bottom and then the computer tells me it's not connected. The seller has been very cooperative, and I can see it was working when she had it because there were call times to her old numbers.
I don't seem to be able to access call barring, caller id, call forwarding or call waiting settings, it tells me the setting couldn't be read from the network, if that helps at all?
Anyone suggest where I turn next?
My ROM version is 1.22.110.3
My radio version is 1.47.30.10
I'm trying on T Mobile PAYG UK
Edit: I've just tried swapping both my sims to my old phone (moto v535) to try and make some calls and they both now give me 'call failed' (including the brand new one, i've just activated and has only been in the MDA for a few hours tryna get it to work) yet still show 3-4 bars of signal. does this make any difference to diagnosing the problem?

How to turn the network lock back on?

Hi!
I have a network unlocked HTC Dream (english T-mobile-version) that I bought used and unlocked. The previous user hade Tele2 as his operator but I used Telia. I´m now in dispute with him because the phone never worked with any calling och messaging but data works fine after manual APN-settings. I have now recieved the unlock code he got to unlock the phone, but with it being unlocked already it doesn´t really help me right now.
The plan is to somehow revert back to a locked phone and unlock it with my SIM sitting inside, and by that maybe fixing the problem.
So how do I make the phone go back to being locked to T-mobile?
Best regards,
Christoffer
It sounds like it might be IMEI locked on the network. T-mobile in the UK will allow blacklisted phones to connect even though they cannot work and there seems to be a loophole where data gets through. Maybe the case is similar, ring your operator from another phone and ask them.

Well I am not sure why you can access data but can't make calls. It would seem to be some type of carrier problem or something I don't know about. I do know that you definitely cannot re-lock it, once it is unlocked it stays that way unless tmobile can do something with it. Something is either wrong with the phones hardware or your carrier, if it is a software problem maybe try flashing a new rom and re-enter your APN stuff.
Try making a emergency call like 911 or whatever, if that doesn't work something is screwed.
I tried it out this weekend with a friends SIM who is on Tele2, and it worked there with no problem! It is so weird that it acts like it was network locked, even though it shouldn´t be.
I´ve seen that a few have posted about the same problem, mainly with the Dream but also with the Magic. It comes up as "Telia" but follows with a "(No Service)". About 24 hours after I recieved it connected to the network and worked fine for about 10 hours but then it stopped working just as I got a MMS I was about to download. If I try to manually connect to the network from the list of operators, it says that my SIM "isn´t allowed to connect to this network".
I´ve downgraded and upgraded Radio to try to solve this, nothing worked.
I dont know alot about foreign networks but if you can get data then you should get all services. That message you got "SIM isn't allowed to connect to this network" is what you should get when your not unlocked. Or if the SIM is trying to use another carriers cell tower, your sure you got the APN settings correct? It sounds like you have some sort of hardware problem if the switching of Radios didn't help. Can you try the same SIM in another phone and see what happens?
I use the same SIM daily in my old phone the Dream was supposed to replace, works like a charm with everything.
It can´t be a hardware problem when the phone works flawless with Tele2, or can it?
Well it is just weird the data works and not calls. I am just guessing what it could be. Maybe something with the carrier? It's a odd problem.
Did you ring your operator? Put the SIM card in the phone, turn it on, then ring Telia from another phone. They should be able to tell you something. If it is blacklisted, they do not always share this with other networks.

That might be a thing to try. I have been in contact with Telia and gave them my IMEI-number but even during the short period the phone worked (by chance) they say that IMEI has never been logged in their system.

How to find lost HD2 via GPS? (Microsoft My Phone)

Dear xda-users.
Sadly I have lost my HD2 after a having it for a week. I have tried to locate it via Microsoft My Phone but it failed me.
My network operator has blocked the sim-card and the phone's IMEI number.
Does anyone know if it is possible to track it down even when the phone has ran out of power and does?
Anybody know any company who is able to track devices?
I hope you can help me.
Regards
Razir.
Well if the SIM card is blocked, there is no way how the device would let you know. It could use wifi, but even if wifi was on, HD2 wont connect unknown networks until told so.

No power, no way.
if its out of power u wont track it... ull have to wait till someone finds it... recharges it and connects to network.. thats only way how to track it (it broadcasts its imei over network).. even if they hard reset it which would kill myphone tracking
dont know about any companies but in slovakia it is prohobited by law to track down cell phones... before ppl were able to do that by calling police but not anymore

If you asked the network to block the IMEI you're pretty much screwed. If it wasn't blocked, someone could take the phone, change SIM, and hopefully turn it on without hard resetting, which you'd be able to see on myphone. But as the IMEI is blocked, even if he did that, the network wouldn't let it connect, so it wouldn't be able to tell it's position.
Except if the guy connects to a wifi. But he'd certainly think about hard resetting before that.
Thank you guys. Your answers have been useful.
As it might be a little late for you now I ran across this program called Ultimate Theft Alert. If you would have had this application installed you might have been able to locate your phone. Or at least tell you who has it.
http://www.wm6software.net/utilities/_ultimate_theft_alert_v35_.html
I'd like to blatantly push a free and VERY full featured program here called remote tracker. Lets you do all the phone tracking stuff, send it a text and it sends you back a link to google maps with lcation, location based on gps and/or cell towers, it can record a 5 minute gps track and send it to you, it has sim swap alert, wipe your simcard, wipe sd card, run scripts remotely, lock up your phone, throw up messages on screen, have the phone call you back, it is soft reset friendly (hard reset proof if you cook it in yourself),,,
http://remotetracker.sourceforge.net/
oh, and no i'm not the author, and nor do i get a kickback
oh, and it can respond by text, email or ftp (or all the above)
edit - sorry to the OP :-(
Hi guys,
I also lost my HTC HD2 but didn't speak to my network yet, so do I have any chance to find it?? any idea how?
Thanks

Hey I am in a similar situation. Can youplease confirm. If I DO Unblock the IMEI from my carrier, will the myphone service be able to locate the HD2 even if it does now have a new SIM card in it?
I lost the phone O/S and would do anything to get it back - I have it registered to the microsoft myphone service. Now that I am back home, I got a new sim card with the same number. Will the myphone service search via IMEI or does it need my active sim card in it?
Thanks
Myphone ONLY uses the sync relationship with the phone. The position is updated when the phone is synced. So the position you see is the one of the last sync, and if the new "owner" is clever enough to hard reset your phone, you'll never get position updates again.

Can't send or receive calls, please help.

Last night I tried to send an SMS, but it wouldn't go, so tried to make a call and it just wouldn't!
So I tried to call me number only to get the message "Calls are not currently being connected to this number". If I turn my off and try to call it it goes to voice mail etc.
I have tried a factory reset, but its still not working. it thinks it has a network, and my internet works on the phone. also, the SIM works fine in another phone...
anyone got any suggestions, I'm going away over Christmas and really need my phone to be working.
If the network is refusing to connect to that particular handset it suggests something a little more sinister.
Just to confirm, SIM in DHD does not work, no sms, no calls. SIM in another handset works fine.
If this is the case, then your DHD may have been IMEI network blocked, i.e. reported lost or stolen. Did you buy the DHD from new?
For a small fee you can check to see if your DHD has been reported lost or stolen > CheckMEND
That's right, SIM doesn't work in DHD for SMS's and Calls, but does in my other phone, but HSDPA does work.
the phone came directly from T-Mobile, I called them but they we're very unhelpful, didn't ask anything or check any thing, just suggested sending it away for repair!
I'd get it replaced. Sounds very odd. Have you tried another SIM card in it? Its probably SIM locked, so you'd need to sort that out before you can try.
Just to fill you all in, I eventually got this sorted! only took three weeks!!!!!
What happened was, the phone T-Mobile sent me doesn't match the box and paperwork it came with, the IMEI and Serial numbers are different.
It now transpires that the idiot who has the matching phone/paperwork/box etc. lost their phone and reported it stolen, so when he gave them the phone details, he (or she) gave them "my" details resulting in my phone being blacklisted!!!!
So they have now un-blacklisted my phone and updated the details on my account. still no explanation as to how it happened, but at least my phone is working again.
