Average amount of RAM free? - JAMin, XDA Neo, S200 General

Whats a good amount of RAM to have free?

Between 14 an 18 Mb, I think...
Mine S200 below 12/10Mb becomes slugish

Ok thanks, so RAM is purely programs running, startup programs and DLLs? Is there any way to minimize RAM usage?
I noticed in memaid you can see today plugins that load DLLs ...anyone had any experience cleaning up the system for minimal RAM usage?

using less today plugins results in less ram usage, yes.

Even taking the sd card out of the pda leads to free more memory.

40mb for me after perfect reset and AFTER install of the extended rom

40mb free....whats the average amount u other ppl have free?? mines about 15-19mb free

12-15. but I do best to contol constantly the on/off programs

Storage & Program space available

How much Storage & Program space have you guys got left.
And at what point does performance start getting affected to the point of problems, especially phone usage.
I try to keep my Program free over 16mb................but this seems to take a lot of maintenance daily.

After a soft reset:
Storage is 21.5 MB
Program is 26 MB
...after lots of use the storage doesnt change much. As for program memory, if I notice its low I then close all running apps. If it only returns to something like 12-14MB then I'll soft reset. Haven't noticed any performance problems with the memory going low however programs like Copilot and some games (Age of Empires) wont launch!!
Other people might let their program memory go lower - be interesting if they have any performance issues.

Memory release question

I use memmaid and I have noticed that while its reclaim ram function does a decent job of freeing up some memory, the one thing i can do to get back alot of ram is to run internet explorer and do some surfing. This uses up a lot of ram but when I shut down I.E. it releases the ram back up to around 18mb. Memaid can never seem to get that much back. Wondering if there is a setting in memaid or possibly another program which will consume a large amount of ram then release it and see if that does better at freeing up ram?
The Exchange Factor
I should add that free RAM, is, in my opinon, widely affected by whether or not you use Microsoft Exchange for e-mail.
Before using Exchange, my RAM hovered at 22-23 MB.
After switching to my exchange account at work, my RAM eventually drops to around 18-19 MB of RAM. It doesn't seem to go below 18, though. Flexmail 4 has the same impact on RAM, so I stuck with Outlook.
Just for the record, I made these observations using both DCD's 1.6.10 ROM and DCD's 3.2.5 ROM. I had 27-28 MB free on a soft reset with the 1.6.10 ROM (5.23 MB pagepool), and 25 MB free on a soft reset with the 3.2.5 ROM (6 MB pagepool).

Enhancing Program Memory

Hi All,
i am a new user to PDA phones. I was using the PointUI home freeware(similar to SPB Home). On turning on the Audio manager, i found the phone becoming slow. The free memory shown was 9.15 MB.I hence uninstalled the PointUI freeware and checked the program memory usage. Even while not any applications, call or msg these are the stats:
Prog Mem: 43.24 MB
In Use: 22.16 MB
Free: 21.08 MB
I would like to know why the In Use memory is taking 50% of the space while NOT running any applications!
and is there any way to enhance the program performance?!!
Apolagize if the question is wierd..just a lay mans' question...
The memory usage is because the OS needs itself to be loaded into memory before you can use the phone. Like in a computer, if you have 1 GB RAM installed, you will not get one GB free when the system boots up. This is applicable to phones as well, it doesn't matter whether its a smartphone/pda or not.
faster GENE!!!
NO guys...u cant make your gene faster by any method even after installing only 1 app!
the fact is when u reboot yr pda the free memory is around 21mb
but as you open applications some of them continue to run in d background.
so use a 3rd party app like 'advanced task manager 0.8' to kill unwanted processes.,.then u will get atleast 12mb free!!
lollll..................
Advanced Task Manager
Hi,
hey is the advenced task manager better than the one provided with the Phone???
If so .. how???? i mean you can see the running processes in the normal task manager too and delete them.....
If its better...then it would be great if you can paste the Download link for it

Point UI is a memory hog. it uses up huge memory. Try removing it, it should improve your system's memory usage dramatically. BTW usage of 22 mb is pretty ok.

why memory usage doesn't go down ?

When I use some apps on it, I understand the unit using more memory. But when I close the apps and use the task bar to close them, I still don't see a moderate reduction of memory usage.
Is there a way to free some memory when most apps are closed?
thanks,
I believe thats where programs like Memmaid come in handy, I often use it to quickly release stored memory which increases my RAM anywhere from as little as 1mb to 5mb.

{Help} Pinpointing a memory leak

Hi all,
i have read all i can find on the forum on this topic and i wanted to ask is a specific procedure existed for determining a memory leak (if i have one!) i find the gwes.exe file starts at 12mb at boot and generally increases untill a soft reset. it can reach 18mb. whilst i am not sure if this effects performance it causes my memory usage to rise constantly for no reason i can determine!
my setup - rom miri wm6.5 v26.3 - premium WITHOUT manilla
interface - spb mobile shell
dialer - phone ex
not much else
any ideas hints kindly recieved!
regards
Mat

GWES memory consumption growth is as natural as gravity and it happens to improve performance. This happens because it is smart enough to keep resources in fast RAM so that next time they will not be loaded from (comparatively slow) flash memory. Basically this is the point in having RAM and the reason why you paid for it - it has to be loaded with stuff to make things faster. This sport of freeing RAM is just ridiculous in most cases (although not always, of course). You pay for it and then don't use.
Secondly, what you describe is not a memory leak. A memory leak is a situation of uncontrolled memory usage growth (if your GWES gradually ate all available memory to a point where device would crash that would be a memory leak). In general, there's nothing wrong with applications consuming more and more RAM as they work as long as they can free this RAM on demand. See for yourself: on your PC, load a memory-hungry application such as a web browser, note how much RAM it uses initially. Then use it for a while, RAM consumption will grow. Then minimize it and see how RAM usage drops dramatically. Even if an application uses half of all RAM it doesn't mean that this RAM isn't available for other programs when needed. When it's not needed, why not use it?
