I've just got a JAMin recently and I'm pretty happy with it, except I can't find a good bit of software that can send sms's easily.
Basically I can send sms's much more easily on a nokia phone, I'm looking for something like a friendly UI to send sms's, any suggestions.
Jamin is flashed with latest rom and a nice big 4gb sdcard for music
Oh, I should say thanks to evryone on this forum for helping me understand alot of stuff. eg I've got A2DP running as well with the patch using Nokia HS-12W works perfectly
Try the WM5 "new menu" .. or something like that.
Have already tried the "Phone Pad" input panel instead of the default soft keyboard? Using T9 on S200 my SMS writing is much less slower than using standard keyboard on screen, but it's not as fast as my N80.
The phone pad is okay to type.. But I would really like to have a Danish version of the wordbook... Anyone knows how to get different languages for that?
try tengo thumbpad or the normal tengo keypad, i think its super fast with some practise.
yeah thanks ump, after trying just about every method, I settled on tengo thumb, seems the best for me
default input
Can anyone let me know how can I change the default input mode to the phone pad from the keyboard. Basically whenever I reset my device, it goes to the keyboard as the default input. I would like to change this so that the phone pad is the default and I don't need to change it everytime.
Thank you,
Gaurav Jain
There is a new version of TenGo (v2.1), it supports multiple languages! You try it first before buying
In the option menu you can set TenGo to be the default SIP
Well, i write SMS quite often and i can say that i feel like the qwerty on screen keyboard is FASTEST as long as you're used to it. Can give me about 200 symbols per minute.
I second that. Tengo is the best for me and its really easy to use and learn.
open a file via notepad
write
01#"\windows\tmail.exe" -service "SMS" -to "name <+90555xxxxxxx>" -body "your message here"
save file as file_name.lnk copy it to your device than run it via file explorer your mesaage will popup and tap on send.
thats it.

I am just wondering what a lot of people use as their default Input Method on their PPCs.
I've used almost all of them except transcriber. Which is strange cause sometimes it makes the best sense. But the slight delay in recognition always kept me from making it my input method of choice.
So will everyone share what methods they have used? are using or prefer using? Does it differ based on what you are doing? I pick one and stick to it. Mostly its Letter Recognizer but lately I've been using the keyboard a lot.
I've noticed one issue with letter recognizer. I used it "full-time" on my previous pda and after a while because of excessive use of the graffiti input area, that area of the screen became a little insensitive to input so i had to press harder than usual for it to recognize my input.. Did this ever happen toyou or anyone?
So after that I'm a little scared to do the same thing to my XDA II therefore i am using the keyboard so that my screen taps are more evenly spread out. But i prefer the letter recognizer. Anyone else have similar experiences?
Personally I like keyb, transcriber, or my targus keyb.
Also,
when you click the selection box to choose which input method to use, go to options, select transcriber, and click options. You can change how long it takes to translate, and with what quality. I have mine set to high quality with almost no delay. I can write a word, and by the time my stylus is back to where I started, it's ready for the next. Although, I wish I could custom write a recognition DB instead of using MS's standard DB. Alot of letters I write a little differently or specificly (like 6 or b).
I've been using Calligrapher for a number of years now and find it superb.
I too am a long time user of CalliGrapher and am very happy with it. The recognition works very well and I do not have to alter my writing style at all. It's software keyboard is also very good and suggests many more words as you type (which you can then select instead of typing the entire word).
I was a little disappointed when PhadPad applet was removed and developed into a separate stand alone application but I found it so useful I elected to buy it anyway.

I am trying Decuma OnSpot. its a really nice and easy to use input method for the Palm and PPC. I havent tried caligrapher.
Has anyone else used both these products? Can you compare them? I am pretty happy with the Decuma (as of last night).
Tried TenGo and found it quite good for normal notes etc. However when you go to write an SMS, the other inputs - Keyboard, Letter Recogniser etc will auto find your contact after the first couple of letters in the address to: field.
I find that TenGo does not do this and for me that makes it not as useful.
Also, tried Fitaly, jury is still out decided if I like it or not. To be honest it's 'clumsy' the letters in different positions is sooooo consfusing initially. Mostly I use letter recogniser which I get on well with.
Cheers
I always use the Letter Recognizer, and the standard Keyboard when entering passwords etc. the Block Recognizer and Transcriber I have never got on with!!
settings
Perhaps you guys can help. I found the registry setting to set the input method permanently be letter recogniser. So when every you turn of the the device or reset it it alays comes up with lettere recogoniser. But I had a crash recently and now I cannnot remember what it was.
Any ideas?

I usually use letter recognizer, I think it's a quite fast method. But it can't write "ő" and "ű" letters, only "o~" and "u^" :-(
Yes, yes. Sreen become insensitive after a half or one year useage.
I use a self-made input method, it's name Blimkeys. You can write letters on your XDA similar to write letters on a generic mobile phone. Support different languages. Check my signature!

I use MessageEase from www.exideas.com. It took me a little while to get used to the layout but I find it extremely easy to use.
I prefer it to fitaly as I tried that but tended to use message ease a lot more.
The advantage with MessageEase is that you can change it into a larger size panel and u can even use your finger to write.

Amen to that!
I've written a couple of comparative reviews regarding input methods for the XdaII/Pocket PC, they can be found here...
Comparative review of alternative input methods for the XDA II
Follow-up Review of Input Methods for the Xda II
Personally I found letter recognizer is quite. Maybe I just need to enter standard english so special characters won't bother me at all!
I use the kb mainly for almost anything, is the fastest using two my well groomed thumb-nails tapping technique.. Once a while I will use transcriber for composing long letter/notes. Given up on those letter/block recognizer since I ruined my cassiopeia through excessive use.
Unlocking
having problems with unlocking Xda II using both softwares
it comes up with the error
xda2unlock.exe v2.2
Welcome to your Himalaya network locking repair tool!
This tool is free of charge....... (Or so it was when it left the factory)

Unfortunately it seems the repair was not successful. Maybe you can find help at http://forum.xda-developers.com which I went to down loaded but stil cut unlock.
When I discount the USB the screen on Xda stays at USB v1.01 so cant do anything with it any reason why this would happen

registry settings for default input method
Just so it is here because it took me ages to find it.
Set Letter Recognizer as default input method
Whenever you soft-reset, the input method reverts to the keyboard. Changing this registry entry will set it to your desired default each time.
KEY: \HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\Sip\
NEW VALUES: DefaultIm =
Input type
Set to this String value
Keyboard {42429667-ae04-11d0-a4f8-00aa00a749b9}
Letter Recognizer {42429690-ae04-11d0-a4f8-00aa00a749b9}
Block Recognizer {42429691-ae04-11d0-a4f8-00aa00a749b9}

I've tried both of them and more besides - I still come back to Calligrapher, nothing else to touch it IMHO. See my comparitive reviews here and here.

Hi Gábor!
Blimkeys is great.
Had to adjust it for German characters and for big thumbs like mine (not only bigger fields but also fatter frames around the fields).
On my dopod 900, I use keyboard SIP and PlumSIP, I wanna switch between then quickly.
But Fn+SYM or PQZ doesn't work properly,I try vijay555's SIPSwitch,but it's hard to use.
So I wrote one to switch between different SIP.
First map it to one hardward key,
Then press the key, it change the SIP to next SIP in the system SIP list and show the input panel.
BTW , if u want switch between some peculiar input method, u can use POCKET TWEAK to hide others.
Sorry for my poor english.
thanks a lot !!!
it's what I, not only me but all the chinese, need.
thanks million times.
I also want to know the exact way of hiding some input method, as I have been searching for the POCKET TWEAK you mentioned, but don't get any outcoming.
u can got it from here
http://tillanosoft.com/ce/ptweak.html
You're really unbelievable! FTSwitchSIP comes out just one day after you posted to try to find some tool to switch SIP. Many Chinese users of Dopod 838 and 900, known as Wizard and Universel here, have been searching for such a tool for a long time. I am just one of them who is lucky to find it out first.
I've shared your amazing tool in the pdafans forum, I hope you won't mind.
http://bbs.pdafans.com/viewthread.php?tid=203195
Thanks a lot.
Got PocketTweak.
there seems no direct way of hinding input method.
Would you show me some hints?
I think it has a bug here. I have been using the rom of Traditional Chinese. Got several input methods. And hide some of them with Pocket teak. And install CE and PlumSIP. Now I have 3 input methods. 1. Zhuying ( as default) 2. Mengtian Hand Writing 3. PlumSIP. At the beginning, the switch seems ok. I am very glad and thankful. But when I swicth several times, it stuck and both plumSIP and Mengtian displayed. The PPC is hanged. Only reset can make it work.
Thanks your reply.
I'll update it on this weekend.
I wanna add some setting and test it again.
thanks a lot.
I've been searching for such software a lot.

the tool works fine.. maybe u can try to hide sme OEM sips u dont use and try awain.. may be a memory issue
How do I go about that then - just delete the registry reference to them?
Also can anyone give me a tip on how to locate specific bits of the registry - it took me ages to find the registry entry to pcm keyboard (i'm using regedit).

works perfectly with ipaq hx2495 (WM5)! thanks for posting this cool app!
OMG! Thank you for this. Actualy, I figured out that it's a last thing that I need to be happy with my Artemis. To be able to change small stylus-friendly SIP which I'm used to use in my office to somethig finger-friendly when I'm on the streed by HW button.
Thanks!
What about new version with ability to setup two SIP to cycle just between them? - but as I said, I'm completely hapy as it is.
hi all
im using the 2.17 qtek rom and i have to admit, i have not been impressed at all by the phone functions.
its very user unfriendly and so hard to get things done.
is there a better rom out there for the phone interface?
in terms of dialing, from contacts, replying, saving numbers, sending messages to phone numbers etc
also, my keyboard (soft keyboard on the screen) is driving me nuts.
i cant install phraze-it, i mean, i install it, but it never comes up when i choose it as input method. always the keyboard. the other inbuit soft input types work.
tried to install blimkeys and all others out there, but nothing comes up. ive never seen their interfaces.
anybody any ideas?
Cheers

As for the Phone User Interface there's nothing you can do apart: 'Get used to it!', it's not so bad in the end.
For the SIP (Soft Input Panel) i can only suggest: be sure the programs you're using are designed for WM 5.0 and install them in main memory.
bye
I believe if you look in the wiki you will find a registry edit that will change the default input method. you can make it the keypad if you like. Not quite sure if that's what you want.

Anybody able to get tengo working on their athena?
I've got a Dopod U1000. It will install and sometimes work for a while after hard resets/reinstalls, but always stops working suddenly and won't come back. By that, I mean that I can see tengo as an SIP option, but choosing it only brings up the standard WM keyboard.
I don't think there's a conflict because it stops working without any new apps being installed or settings being changed.
Anybody having better luck or have advice?
Thanks,
Rob

there is a problem with wm5 sip management....
have you made tengo your default input..(that should help)
or try searching for PQIIz and chose tengo as default for either potrait/landscape or both...
P.S-my experiences are based on universal....
Yes, I've experienced this and know how you can fix this.
The problem is the way memory is utilised. I don't knwo if this is due to WM5, but it happens not just to Dopod U1000/HTC Athena but to all PDA if certain software are installed.
I'll try to recall the steps I took. Please let me know if this works:
1) Temporarily switch off anything that uses memory: today plugins, WIFI, bluetooth.
2) Remove SD cards temporily. This is because of some bugs that is associated with SD card causing memory drain.
3) Select standard SIP as the default if it is not already so
4) Soft reset
5)Open an application that need keyboard. This can be notepad, word, excel etc
6) You should be able to select Tengo now
7) If you are using the free version: see www.free.tengo.net You must first register before the keyboard would work. If you have used the commercial version with added functionality ( www.tengo.net ) this may or may not be necessary - I'm not sure.
8) Once registered, you should be able to use Tengo from now on. Now you can put back all your WIFI, Bluetooth, desktop plugins and SD cards
This solution was provided by Edwin Ng, the founder of the Singapore company that made the SIP.
This is a very very clever, flexible, and fast input method. I've now used it as my default SIP and 10000% happy with it. There is virtually no learning curve.

I'm coming around to seeing it your way.
Been playing with this and this SIP is really starting to grow on me. I too have it as my default SIP right now as I'm hoping to start carrying the Ameo without keyboard as soon as a decent case, preferably silicon based, becomes available.
Guys..search for Happy Typing Keyboard in this forum

Tried searching that, comes up with 21 hits and net connection is too slow to check them all out atm, so as you were specific with the words I bunged them in quotes to search the exact string... only this thread comes up....
Tried "Happy Typing Keyboard iphone" (w/o quotes) and nowt.
Please can you be more precise and provide a link?

You can even handle complex stuffs like web site address and password once the non-existing word has been used once. I like the audio warning if there is a non-existing word being typed, as it indicates typing error in most cases. The result is highly accurate and quick typing.
Very glad that you finally see its merits.
Certainly do. Thanks again.
i'm using an arabic rom, but when entering text in english, using the standard windows mobile keyboard, i do get the regular pop-up menu with predictive text, but the problem is that the dictionary never learns any new words. for e.g. after typing wanna in a couple of msg's, the next time you start typing wan, i never get wanna in the list, just the standard words that came with the original dictionary??? is there a fix around this??

Not sure if this will help depends on the keyboard your using, on mine just above the letter keys when you start typing it shows a bar with the letters typed on the right hand side it shows a (plus) sign click that and then you can add your new word then click the (Tick) sign
Like I said it depends on what keyboard you are using
Another option is you can search for eT9MyWords this is a program on my ROM which allows input of new words
Hope that helps
ozmoran is correct. On a lot of roms you need to actually enter the word for it to be stored in the memory banks. When you start to type a word, click on the + symbol to the right of the input box. Now type word you want again and from then on it will be saved for future use.
All words saved are saved into the eT9MyWords program which can be found if you go to (depending on which rom your using) Start > All programs. If you open up this program you can also physically add more or delete saved words
Hope this helps
what you guys are describing is when one is using 1 of the htc keyboards, full qwerty, or compact qwerty, but that doesn't apply to the standard windows mobile keyboard; on this keyboard you dont have the horizontal bar with the + sign on the end, and i did try entering the words myself into eT9MyWords, but as i said that only serves the htc keyboards...

Eureka, i just clicked on the clear stored entries, which is found under settings/input/word completion, and since then, the phone seems to have miraculosly remember any new words i type.
thanks alot for all your thoughts guys.
i use the standard windows mobile keyboard, b/c i have been doing that for so long now, i very comfortable, knowing where every key is, and i'm used to the gesture's too. i guess it just an old habit.
again thanks

Excellent, glad you got this sorted.
Obviously path you provided depends on rom your using. This path doesn't exist for me and predictive text works differently on rom I use. I'm assuming your using stock rom?
yes it's a stock ROM. i didnt want to venture into cooked ROMs, so as not to void my warranty, and luckily i havent, b/c a couple of months ago i had a problem with the LCD screen, and i got that replaced at no charge.
