Auto soft-reset every night? - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario General

Is there a program which will automatically soft reset the phone at a predefined time every day? 4AM for example?
Thanks.

I use Spb Backup to make a daily backup and it can to a soft reset after the backup is complete.

Thanks a lot

Right, I installed it OK, and it worked fine the first night, but since then, the program just crashes once it's done the back-up. I find it in the morning just frozen at that screen, and have to soft-reset. Are there any solutions to this? Or any other programs that can schedule a soft reset every night?
Thanks.

Does it crash, or sit at a prompt waiting for you to tap an on-screen Reset button? If the latter, this action is user-configurable if you want to manually control when the reset happens, but it should be able to do it fully automatically too.

Try this new program - autoreset for pocket pc - can set times etc...

Cost $8 though but looks good.

Can't dismiss alarm on MDA Vario II

I'm having a problem with an alarm that I can't cancel.
The alarm sounded at the correct time but the softkey to snooze or dismiss it never appeared. A soft reset failed to get rid of the alarm so I went into 'Clock and Alarms' and unchecked the two alarms that had been set. I then soft reset again and this didn't have any affect either.
I then went into Clock and Alarms again and discovered that the unchecked boxes were checked again. So I changed the times, unchecked them and clicked OK before soft resetting again. This still didn't wotk and the alarms are back to showing the original time with the boxes checked again.
The front indicator light is flashing orange, suggesting that there is a notification waiting, but there is no alarm symbol or softkey shown on the screen. I have discovered that if I receive an SMS then the notification for that appears correctly. When I dismiss this then the light changes to green, until I soft reset again when it vibrates for the alarm again and returns to an orange light again.
I think this may actually have something to do with Vito Button Mapper. I have had it installed and the trial has expired but I hadn't uninstalled it. I had noticed over the past few days that the Messaging and Web buttons on the front panel were no longer working. This morning I uninstalled the program (after the alarm problem started). This seems to have resolved some of the button problems but I was also getting an error message about 'Buttons.exe'. Eg. The Comms Manager button wasn't working until I assigned it to another app, then saved it and changed it back to Comms Manager again.
I've seen another post which recommends using SK Tools to try and resolve the alarm issue. I only have the trial version of SK Tools so I don't think I can do this. However, it did show me that the softkeys were still assigned to the Vito app.
I have tried using MemMaid to do a clean but it crashes at the Duplicate Notifications step.
Any suggestions would be appreciated, as I don't really want to do a hard reset and I don't want to buy SK Tools if it isn't going to solve the problem.
thanks
I was going to suggest memmaid and Sktools but I see you already tried. I use Sktools - you have the trial but it might be worth a try because I think the trial (from memory) allowed a limited list of 6 items to show up. Hopefully six items would be enough and if you got rid of one or two items when you re run it it might allow another six??
Mike
Thanks Mike I'll give that a try
I had the same problem as you about the alarm...
What I did, was download the check_notifications program from scarybear software (it is free) and even it says it is not for WM5, worked for me displaying all the notifications my TyTN have in.
There were more that 25 notifications!! most of them in the past and duplicated (well actually not "duplicated" but 7 or 8 times each one!)... I manually delete a lot of the notifications and only leave 7 of them (I really do not know if all of them are necesary but they seem to be "important") and after that the alarm went away and the new alarms/notifications star working again.
In my case, the problem was caused (I think) by a game named SPB AirIslands, cause I have more than 15 notifications of this game... after uninstalling the game and deleting the notifications everything is working just fine so far now.
Hope this can help...
regards
Thanks all,
I've tried a combination of SK Tools, Mem Maid and Check Notifications and I have half solved the problem.
I have now got to the point where I can cancel the alarms, clear the notifications, and I no longer have an orange light indicating that there are any outstanding notifications.
However, if I get into the same problem every time I try to set an alarm. The alarm will sound but the softkeys to cancel it do not appear. The softkeys for missed calls and SMS notifications DO appear, so it doesn't actually seem to be a problem with the buttons application itself.
One other thing I've just realised is that since this problem started appointment alarms no longer work at all.
Can anyone suggest anything else I should look for in MemMaid etc. that might help? I'm assuming that I will probably now have to do a hard reset to fix this but I really want to figure out what the cause is so that I can avoid it happening again (I never had to hard reset my M2000 once in 18 months use!).
thanks
Mark
Same here..
Well, I thought I am the only one with that problem: Its a T-Mobile MDA compact II with a german OS.
Any solutions? I realized I could delete the Alarm notification to get rid of the repeating alarm. But it is no help to run Pocket Mechanic (Notifications) every morning to silence my TyTN...
ROFL. I have similar strange behaviors with notifications. I finally decided to try to figure it out. I had 579 notifications in queue! I ran CheckNotification and it eliminated all but 12!
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Todd,
got 92 notifications, all of them correct. CALENDAR.EXE for appointments, and some for device wakeup (Backup etc.) - any other idea?
I still haven't got to the root of the problem but here's an update in case this ever helps anyone else:
* I've tried to clear the alarms problem using SK Tools, MemMaid and Check Notifications. I've found it easier to use MemMaid but I'm sure the other apps will achieve the same thing.
* Soft resetting after clearing the offending entries from the notification queue seems to clear the alarm, but only if I select soft reset from within MemMaid (rather than resetting with the stylus).
* The problem still happens again every time I set an alarm.
* Appointment alarms in Pocket Informant are no longer working. The device sometimes seems to wake at the correct time, but the alarm does not sound and no notification appears on screen.
I've tried hard resetting and then restoring with a Sprite Backup. Unfortunately I didn't have a recent backup from before the problem started (carelessness on my part as I allowed a scheduled backup to overwrite it before I tested this approach).
So I think I'm going to go back to a very early back up (which I was trying to avoid so that I didn't have to reinstall too many apps).
However, I assume there is still something screwed in the registry somewhere, so if anybody ever comes across a solution please feel free to add it to this thread
I have a similar problem on my 8525. (posted a new thread before getting pointed here)
Before my 8525 I used to rely on my phone’s alarms to wake me up in the morning when traveling.
Now I have a problem.
1. the Default Alarm program does not work. No idea why, but I read you need a soft reset program to make them work. So I bought SkSchema. Now my phone resets ten mins before my Alarm is supposed to go off. For some reason the soft reset kills the alarms…
2. So Alarms still don’t work, but I want to run a test, so I turn on my alarm for 2 mins after setting it. 2 mins later it turns on, now problem 2. I can’t turn it off. It keeps going off for over twenty mins before I figure out how to trick it into turning off (soft reset alone did not work) I had to set a new alarm then soft reset, somehow it turned it off.
3. I am relentless. So I decide to try using SkSchema’s reminder setting as an alarm. It survives the reset test. Then it goes off. Well I hit cancel on the notification and the alarm is still going off as I write this. Luckily I only had ten repeats setup… but the odd thing is the repeats are 5 mins apart. I am praying it will stop on the tenth repeat. Or I might be doomed to a hard reset.
So now a question…
Is there any reliable way to have an alarm on the 8525? I’ll go buy another program if I must just point me in the right direction.
And, Anyone know why I can’t turn off the alarms when they do work?
Thanks in advance, this is driving me crazy.
Q
Same issue...
I do nout use the built-in alarms anymore. Notification foe Calendar events works fine but alarms cannot be dismissed.
Well, I do use SKschema now.
i use spb Time, had similar issues as above before I used the spb app, no problems now and I can set mp3s as the alarm tone.
SKtools running in auto mode on startup fixed my problem, but it did not fix it until I unlocked the full version. Memmaid did not fix the problem.
I still can not use the built in alarms but skshema (or whatever the SK tolls schedule program is) does work.
Drives me nuts too...!
I'm using the check_notifications too to clear the red double alerts. But I have to do this every time after the alarm goes off... also I don't get any alarm reminders for calendar entries.
Isn't there anyone here who knows where the problem exactly is? there seems to be so much experts in this forum!! love to get rid of this problem - without, again, paying for some third party solution...
Hi,
No solution, just another poor soul with the same problem. It started a couple of days ago, when I could not stop the alarms. And now I do not get appointment reminders either. So I'll be watching this thread carefully and waiting for the expert that will solve it.
Thanks!
That is what is nice about SKtools (not sure if the others do this) But SKtools runs in automation mode, I have mine set to auto run on startup.
I also use SKhema to schedule resets.
So with a reset set to go off in the morning all my alarms work.
You can always tell if this is what is causing problems if your light is flashing orange but you have no notifcations to dismiss.
Although I must admit it is pretty lame that this even happens in the first place, but oh well I still like my phone.
EDIT:
With a little hard work we could probably figure out what is causing this. First we need someone to do a hard reset and run for a bit to see if this problem comes back.
If not we know it is a program.
Then we need to collect data on what programs we are running, to narrow it down.
I have a theory that it might be Pocket Informant. Just a theory.
Don't think so. I do not have Pocket Informant, and it happened to me.
After dowloading CheckNotifications and running it, I now have alarms again (plus the ability to dismiss/snooze them). Haven't checked the notifications yet. I had 200+ notifications, and I pressed Clear in CheckNotifications, which left just 2 items in the list. After reading all the warnings, I hope ActiveSync still works...
Desktop Outlook connection?
Having almost got rid of this problem it seems to have partially re-appeared. The normal alarms seem to work fine but I'm having intermittent problems with the notifications.
I'm beginning to suspect that this may have something to do with snoozing/dismissing alarms in a combination of both desktop Outlook and the PPC.
My MDA is often left plugged into my laptop at work for most of the day. So I will very often use Outlook to snooze and dismiss timed tasks and reminders throughout the day. I'm not really sure what the PPC is supposed to do under these circumstances. ie. when the device is connected is it meant to sound alarms or not?
I'm not sure because it seems inconsistent. Eg. sometimes the notifications appear on the device as well as the desktop, but I'm not convinced that this always happens. Also, because I'm snoozing the alarms on the desktop I'm not sure what effect (if any) this has on the notification queue on the device itself.
(Hopefully that explanation makes some sense!)
Does anybody else who is experienceing the problem regularly leave the device connected in this way?

I have no solution yet, but my 8125 just started doing this to me yesterday morning.
And here is the strange thing... I have changed NOTHING in my phone. Monday morning it worked fine. I didn't do anything with the phone besides make calls and send/recieve texts on monday. Haven't installed anything new or changed any settings. Tuesday morning, it started alarming with no notification window. The alarm sounds with no way to stop it. If I soft reset the alarm starts right up again as soon as the phone comes back up.
I don't understand why it would do this out of the blue for no reason all of the sudden.
If I find an answer I'll post it up for sure.
I'm quite convinced now that the appointment/task notification problem is related to my using the notifications in both Outlook and the PPC.
(The problem originally started shortly after I began to use actively use Outlook at work).
I still haven't really figured out what is going on, but the appointment and task notifications don't seem to work at all on the device itself anymore only in Outlook. Even deleting stuff from the notification queue doesn't seem to resolve it.

disable both action screen, and dialer when slide open

Hi, I usually slide open just to power on the phone.
So, I would like nothing to happen when I slide the phone open when on the today screen..
Does somebody have an idea how to do this?
Are you talking about the Keypad QuickTasks?
You can easily find the option on Start -> Settings -> System Tab -> Keypad QuickTasks
Yes, I mean the dialpad quicktasks.
When this is disabled I get the dialer instead.
As a "workaround", you could just press the red "hangup" button after opening the phone to return to the home screen...

Oh.. I've been using a certain "Yet another lock app" v1.2 or something like that... and I always set mine to lock and suspend everytime I do a right to left sweep (via FTouchFo). And everytime I slide the keypad, it automatically unlocks and nothing comes up; no quicktasks nor phoneapp). I'm not kidding... I don't know if it's a good "side-effect", but that's how it works.

I actually prefer this than any other locking app out there since this app uses the same built-in Device Lock program with a few nice modifications.
Enjoy!
Optional Alternative
I wrote a mortscript file to disable both menus
1. Extract
2. Place "Kill" folder in Program Files
3. Place run.mscr in startup
4. Reset
Enjoy
Simple fix for this
Hi there,
I just got my Niki a couple of weeks ago (with T-mobile in the UK) and this has been bugging me too ever since.
I figured that there must be a registry setting to control this somewhere as the Keypad Quicktasks are able to adjust this behaviour. Last night , I finally found it.
The setting in question is:
HKLM/Software/HTC/Biotouch/ActionScreen/Check
With the Keypad Quicktasks on, it is set to 1. With them off it is set to 0 and will instead launch the phone app.
Simply set it to anything else (e.g. 2) and both the Quicktasks and the phone application are disabled upon sliding open the phone. The active slide event is still recognised and sliding the phone open will still answer an incoming call.
Sweet.

i've come accross a problem - a reset seems to wipe the settings and has reverted to showing the phone screen???
Well it seems to survive a soft reset as well as power cycles with the battery removed so I presume you mean a hard reset, in which case ... isn't that the point of a hard reset?
I would be amazed/worried if it wasn't set back to default by a hard reset.
nope, i am on about a soft reset! i'll try again to see if it keeps the settings this time
Im happy to say it works fine, after i made a soft reset.

it´s posible to change the action of the power buton hardkey?

Not good
But not a no-go item, just a minor irritator for people that fiddle with the software a lot
A normal user almost never needs to reset.
....and soft reset most of the times anyway....
PsShutXP will do the work from screen ( besides any major stucks)
And this could be seen like a security feature, as it's no more accessible to the eye from now on.

I tought that it is a standard, after installation of a new app you always must do a softreset to let it work properly!
If thats a fact, many people get frustrated when they will install a lot of new app's. And I think they will!
I hope the extra feature (soft reset) in SPB Mobile Shell 2.1.2 will work to.

It has been reported in the topic 'Programs/Utilites & Games ~ working on the Touch HD' Mobile Shell has problems with the Touch HD.
The drop-down menu's do not work.

Another Way
There is a quicker and easier way to reset - hold down the power button for a few seconds. You'll get a prompt about saving work but OK that and the device will shut down fully. If you wait another few seconds you can power it up again - seems to have all the benefits of a restart without the hassle of taking the back off.
There's another method for a reset:
Shutdown phone, Push both Volume up and Volume down, push Power button.
Wait till phone sais its resetting on screen.
No need to use the reset button (or whining and biotchin)

And what is wrong with just shutting down and starting up your device? that has the same effect. I have installed quite some applications and most of them offer a soft reset at the end anyway...if not, I just switch the device off and back on...faster than taking off the battery cover first.
I would highly recommend WkTask Manager
Besides providing a soft-reset option directly from the "X" or Close/Ok button, it is highly featured and way better than HTC' X Button.

Carty..

I've been using this one for years. It works well.
I have to say though there are times that nothing else other than a soft reset will do.
How about drilling a small hole in the back cover? And perhaps sticking a piece of rubber sheet on the inside of it to prevent dust getting in, but still allowing you to use the stylus to hit the reset.
I assume the back cover is made of sheet metal? (I'm still patiently waiting for my contract to run out! )
Or you could try A-A reset manager - search on the forums for it
Are there any other ways to do a soft reset without opening the back cover? Given how often a soft reset is required (or at least advised), I'm concerned for the longevity for the little hooks on the plastic back plate that hold it firmly in place...
EDIT: I am quite good at answering my own queries today - as suggested, A-A Reset Manager is a nice little app that seems to do the trick, just run it when you need to reset (or schedule a regular reset - eg overnight). After some searching, I found it here:

Device lock no longer working on long press End key (Found reason!)

Hi,
After a couple of days playing with the HTC touch HD I noticed that I can not lock the device anymore by long pressing the end key. I have looked into the settings and it clearly states that long pressing the end key should lock the device.
whenever I long press the key I see the some screen refresh but the device is not locked.
If I switch off Touchflo3D and show the device lock on the today screen, then the device gets locked. Could this be a bug in touchflo3D?
I would hate to have to perform a hard reset just to fix this issue...
If anyone knows a solution, please let me know.
Edit: well, I found the reason why this happens. Once you setup a password for your device, it stops locking the device using long press end button. It sucks, but I can live with it...
Looks like a hardreset is the only way to go.

You will have them. It will reset to factory settings, original ROM plus all installations HTC chose to put on the HD.

Can someone confirm that you no longer get a choice of action for the Long Press End Key, i.e. it locks the device and that's it. On the diamond you are able to choose an action or choose the display choice list.

This is the same with me and I've not touched push e-mail or exchange server settings. I've only had the phone for 36 hours so not done much at all. The first thing I went to try and do was lock the phone and it didn't work. I'm reluctant to do a hard reset as it didn't work out of the box.
Did you try a hard reset? Did it solve the problem?
no i didnt try a hard reset, didnt think it was worth it just try to get the lock to work.
Has anyone else had the same problem with it not working right from the start and tried a hard reset? If so, did it solve the problem?

I performed a hard reset and then it worked again. But after setting up exchange, it stopped working. The device lock on the today screen still works though, but not from touchflow3d
I decided to go for it and do a hard reset. The device lock still didn't work. All I had done was follow the original setup screens after the reset. During this I set up Lock with a simple PIN and to prompt for it after an hour of inactivity. If I remove the settings from Lock I can then use Device Lock on long press End key but I can't use both.
This is rather frustrating as I had simple PIN (paranoid as had an Ef stolen a few months ago so at least this would stop them accessing any info stored directly on the device as they would have to do a hard reset to clear it) and Device Lock set up on my Elf which worked absolutely fine.
Has anybody managed to get both working together on the HD? I use the Device Lock to stop any buttons being pressed when I don't want them to be and the PIN so it's harder for people to access any of my personal info if the phone is stolen (not that I intend for this to happen again!). I really would like both to work together!
Just spoken to CS at Orange and they have no idea if this issue with only able to have either Lock or Device Lock working at any one time is specific to my device or whether everyone is affected. If anybody is able to try and let me know their results I'd be grateful as I don't know yet whether I need to send the phone back as faulty.

Just confirmed that removing the password re-enables the device lock. Nice find!
I am on Vodafone.
I assume that one of the manila files in \Windows is checking a registry entry. I wonder if it is possible to make a change that allows both functions to co-exist.

Thanks for the reply. I guess that confirms that it's not specific to my device! As I mentioned before both functions did co-exist quite happily on the original Touch (Elf) so it is possible. I wonder if it is related to the newer style TouchFlo3D and if anyone experienced the same issues on the Diamond or the Touch Pro?
I hope it is something that could be sorted with "tweaks" to certain files or registry entries. If anyone finds out how to solve it I for one would be very grateful!

Did your exchange policy force you to setup a password? it appears to be the problem. When you setup the device initially with a password, then you cannot lock the device anymore using the long press of the end button. Device lock in today screen always work, the problem is the long press of end button, that stops working as soon as you have a passwaord set up.

Soft reset on phone

Hi, does anyone have a software solution for having an option to soft reset the phone from within tf3d or wm6.1 ? Right now i'm trying out all sorts of new software and it's quite annoying having to open the back cover each time I want to reset.

Try PsShutXP which will give you the options. Haven't tried it myself, but it worked on my blackstone a treat. Use the Touch Diamond version, its about the right fit.
Can you not just hold the power button down and switch it off? It's what I do.
I know it requires access to the touchscreen, but so would any software solution.
You can also install HD Tweak.
I can confirm it works on the TP2.
It also installs Soft Reset.
When you execute, it asks you if you want to soft reset and voila
H.
Devstate (short for device state) is what I use, excellent today plugin (as long as TF3D is disabled) it has options to turn off screen and other stuff too.

Thanks for the quick replies !
I don't like the option of keeping the power button pressed, because it requires me to confirm the shutdown and to power it up again when it has shut down, in the end taking longer if you reset the device about 10 times a day...
As for the PsShutXP, I can confirm it works on the Touch Pro 2.
I will give the HD Tweaks a try and see how that works.
I tried HD Tweaks as well and the reboot function works fine as well. I think I'll go for PsShutXP though since you can skin it. I am also using Advanced Config 3.3 so the added functionality in HD tweaks is not useful either.
I like this one:

You can schedule also when you want to perform a soft reset
Pocketpowermanager is wonderful. Three little icons at the foot of my today screen, allowing me to power-off, rotate screen and soft reset.
Here is what i've used since my touch pro. Hope it helps
here is monxdified simple & neat soft-reset. cab in the zip file.

Handy menu is best I think. U get very nice menu with many short cuts in it and also soft reset. U can have an icon in top bar, but for that U have to install Handy switcher too. Try them and see if U gonna like them, but they are just free to try...
