System running on low storage? - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario General

Since i've had my Wizard, i've installed just about every single app on the storage card, but for some reason now when installing apps i keep getting a storage error, and that there is not enough space. My storage memoery say it has about 6mb free, which i guess is low, but i dont undertsand why this would be filling up?
I have tried to run a search on the large files, but these file are on the storage card? so i dont understand why the phone would complaining about this?
anyway to resolve this?

with some apps, you say to put it on the card but it still put some files on the PPc too, sorry there is no way around this, they just have to run part of it from the PPC

Don't forget that messages, attatchments and PIE cache take up space on the onboard storage, by default.

Thanks, i cleared the PIE cache which has made a big difference. Is there no software available that will tell us which apps are taking up so much space?

If you look here. This tweak program will let you store the IE cache on your storage card.
Also, in your email settings you can tell it to store attatchments on the storage card too.

I like stevenk68's reg cab myself. It's the very first thing I install on all my phones.

Memory

Hello,
Everyonce in a while, my phone fills up its memory. I don't know how. I have a 2Gg card where I try to store everything. I try not to save anything at all on the phone itself but somehow my 40Mb storage manages to fill itself up. I have flashed it before and it helped. Do I have to keep doing that?
Thanks

What browser are you using? It seems that the temporary files are going out of control. Clean your cache once in a while. Alternatively, you can redirect the cache to your SD card but it's not all that healthy for the SD card as it can lead to corruption.
I have WM6, on the Wing from T-Mobile. How do I clean the cache?

I do this about once a week. (I surf a lot!)
With IE open, click Menu - Tools - Options - Click the Memory tab - Delete Files.
There may be another way, but that's quick, easy and frees up a lot of space for me.
Hope that helps.

AAAHHH!! Where's my memory?

Ugh! I bought a 4gb storage card. Every application I download, I save to this card yet. I'm down to 3MB of system storage memory. What can I do about this? I'm sick of clearing my storage once a month to be able to use this phone without the memory error popping up. Does anyone have any suggestions? Is there somethin I can do in my registry? I already have my emails and internet temporary files going to my storage card. What else can I do?
...........................................................................
1. Try another ROM-Are you still using the original rom it came with?
2. Make sure all you apps are closed - They usually just hide out open in the background.
3. Oxios Hibernate - I'm sure you can find a copy around here someplace. [Here ya go http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=374029]
4. Could be a memory leak. Certain programs have this effect on WM devices. {See 1.}
Also, remember that text messages take up room too. If you visit alot of websites, be sure to clear that also. I just cleared those 2 myself and I got like 5-6 MB free from just that.
clear temp storage even if it is on your card, it couldn't hurt. also delete keyboards that you installed unless you actually use them a lot because they take up a lot of room. move your ring tones to the SD card as they will still show up. update to the newest official ROM if you don't want to go to a custom, you'll get more memory with the new ROM but not much.

That is very untrue. I rarely run out of memory with Just2Clean.
how is that untrue? i'm on the new stock rom and there is more available memory for storage and program than the stock rom i was on previously.

Sorry I misread your post but I thought you meant a new ROM in general not the Latest T-Mobile Update. Which is still way under performing compared to what the cooks generate here.
oh yeah, i had open tough 5.2 for like a day and it had so much more room after all my stuff was installed, it was insane, but it had some problems that i couldn't deal with so i went back to stock.
What sorta probs?
I found that most of/all the default apps on the Wing are total crap. I use very few applications. I just get my email, browse with opera mini, play solitaire, and listen to mp3's. Any more than that I expect the device to have issues to a degree. It only has a 201mhz processor it can't be expected to do much more.
it would scroll through lists randomly which was pretty annoying. you can't use jivetalk (now beejiveIM) on it. and there were issues with the original dialpad such as being damn ugly, fixed it with a skin but then it does it's scrolling thing when i'm trying to dial a number and then won't let me hit anymore numbers and i have to go out of the dialpad and go back in.

what rom are you running ???
try installing the cab file for moving IE storage to Storage Card.
on your messages settings save all attatchments to storage card.
there is a solution but you have to let us know whats going on!!!!

haha... thats a good one.. cant do screenshots for all of them, just type in the name of the cab file in google with .cab at the end and do a search, they should all come up with descriptions.
I don't know what ROM I'm runnin. I don't even know what a ROM is. I look around these forums but no one explains, they just say use xyz cab. *shrugs* I'm totally lost
a rom is essentially the operating system that you use on your phone.
If you don't know what rom you're using, you're probably using the T-Mobile stock rom. We highly recommend flashing a custom rom from that POS.
To do that, you will need to use USPL or you will need to HardSPL your phone. Bear in mind that T-Mobile won't help you if they find a custom rom on your phone, but you can just flash back to the original before sending it in.
Read the USPL and HardSPL threads before taking any action

and on your storage memory issue...delete your old mail and text/picture messages then empty your email and text and mms deleted items. also google maps installs and stores its cache in storage memory even if you tell it to install on your card. those are the 2 biggest apps that eat away at my storage memory, although with the open touch 4 lite rom, i usually have 21mb free.

It seems to me that you are experiencing the memory issues that every new T-Mobile Wing is faced with. It has to do with the default Page Pool size.
The easiest way around this problem is to do an upgrade of the new T-mobile software. You can find this at:
http://member.htc.com/RuuDownload/T-mobileUS/Filedownload.aspx?pid=wing
or you can change the pagepool size manually following the instructions at:

Cleaning main memory

Greetings everyone,
I'm new here and relatively newbish to HD2 (have it one month).
Id like to know what can I do to free some space on my device memory?
All tho I installed quite a lot of programs, I always installed them to storage card, so my guess is since device free memory is getting lower and lower
every time I check or install something, it's got to be some cache from Opera, google maps or programs maybe, temp. files from rar perhaps and similar.
So does anyone know for sure what can I delete in my device memory, in windows, etc and not damaging system...
Tried search but with no result...
i'd also like some advice on this too.....
memory depletion happens due:
- opera cache (\windows\opera9\profile\cache)
- IE mobile cache (\Windows\Profiles\Guest\cache)
- htc album cache (\application data\htc\htc album\cache) which is the greatest. i.e. if u have a alot of pics, then everytime you view them, ur album cache grows bigger and bigger and depletes memory.
My advice:
- install clear temp....it's free
- assign the custom folders in clear temp to the above folders.
clear ur cache with a press of a button. done
also everytime u install a program even if only to sd card, some files are installed on ur main memory. Only way to remove those minor files is by a hard reset. You can then assign shortcuts to ur sd card installed applications.

Put your apps on main mem and the phone will be more efficient in its overall use of phone RAM. Mem card installation does not save any RAM or really serve any logical purpose unless the app will not install to phone storage or you have used it all up.
Mem card installation slows the phone down and why on earth would you not use the main storage mem when thats what its there for?

Anything in main memory (storage mem) does not use up RAM therefore has no effect on it.

Tip 67
AND
delete google maps from main mem and make a fresh install with newest version on SD-card. This will also enable compass-direction to google maps.
Move copilot to SD-card with Resco explorer
u can try nd move ur cache folders to sd card but it all needs registry editing tweaks nd it may end up not working as for htc album cache for ex. so easiest is using clear temp my friend.

In the tips, where it mentions "moving" things to the SD card there is no "move" option so if the folder (eg "My Device\My documents\My Pictures

Of course not, I have some (I'll say advanced) knowledge in computers so I dont mix up some basic terms like this . I was thinking of Device memory (storage) not RAM. Since this windows mobile thing is relatively new to me, I wanted to know if deleting cache and temp. files does effect WM and Sense stability....

Oh, and one more question, I tend to switch themes made with HDWall frequently so when I install new theme, replacing old one, does it completely overwrite last one or I have enormous buildup of unused theme files on device memory?

Very little Device Memory HD2. (What? Already!!!)

I've had my HD2 for about a week now. I've installed maybe 3 or 4 apps directly to the device (not to SD Card). I'm now in the situation of not being able to d/l any videos etc. due to having insufficient memory! I can't believe it!!!
Device total storage stands at 200.40MB
Used storage= 189.02MB
Free storage= 11.38MB
However below this info my phone is showing ''Free program storage'' as being 178.38MB. While my SD card is showing Free Memory being at 1453.95MB.
Would the solution be to transfer everything to SD card and only install to the SD card in future?
Yep I would, saves the phones internal memory
I install any non-system apps to the card, anything that needs access to the system files goes on my phone

Thank you. That's really helpful.
These reports of low memory are really starting to bug me.
It would appear that there is something going on that is not fully understand because there is no way that you should run out of phone storage memory with only 4 apps installed!
A serious in depth investigation is needed to unearth the cause.
I have 27 apps installed and I have 152Mb of storage memory left.
Could you tell us what ROM you are running?
Did you go to the task manager and see what is running and try ending the tasks? If you don't kill programs in there they will eat up your system memory... Specially if you are downloading a bunch of porn... Opera is probably using up a bunch.

Thats not the memory the OP was talking about. Unless I've got it all wrong! Or you have!
I think you are referring to Program memory. The OP was talking about Storage memory and how something was using it up.
This is all very strange.
Things you should definitely look at
1. Where are your camera pictures and camcorder videos stored? ---> if you select device and not storage on the camera app or camcorder app settings, then u are my friend putting pictures and videos you've taken to the sdcard...
solutions: go to ur camera app settings and look at where u are storing the pictures...
or go to ur file explorer, go to ur device's memory and check if they are there...
if they are there, then copy and paste them to ur sd card...
2. set ur outlook, yahoo e-mail and stuff to be stored in sd card, not device's memory...
3. idk what else you have in there to have that very little memory left...
Oh I missed that... My phone has 686.12 Total Storage, 190.64 used, 495.48 free. I have installed all of the apps on the Storage card though. If his says that the total storage is 200 or whatever, that sounds like the problem... Should be like a gb of total device memory between storage and programs...
It seems that Opera 9 saves downloads to a folder on the phones 'device memory', but it doesn't always delete them when you tell opera to do so in the downloads menu tab.
It saves them too: \My Device\Windows\opera9\profile\download
When I deleated most of the files there it released over 110 MB of space in the device storage.
I wonder where other programs save similar files?
Sam.
Have a look here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=583638 for tips on freeing some space. The HTC Album cache is my biggest storage hog. Even then, like you, I have just a few programs installed to my internal store and hardly any memory left. The UK version has less storage than the USA HD2 which makes matters worse.
maybe for the euro hd2, cleartemp could help. It can help find those caches and delete them regularly.
I have the tmous version and flash all the time so I don't have that problem.
Also look for the youtube cache. I've heard it can get pretty big if you look at a lot of youtube vids.
edit: go find cleartemp. There are loads of stuff it can clear for you.
I found 10mb under thumbs.db alone.
Not to mention a few mb for google maps and for opera cache each.
you can also add custom folders to be cleaned as well. I haven't looked too much into it, but maybe I should.
Just remember that caches help your phone run faster, so don't erase them unless you need the memory.
This thread has good suggestions. But most are usual recommendations that will help but perhaps not resolve the issue completely (well a couple of posts do mention temp issues). I had a similar experience recently.
A couple of facts:
1. I install all my apps into the main memory. Never had issues. Opera, IE cache, temps all there by default.
2. I download and save on SD. Music, films, pictures, documents, Android are all there.
3. Still I have plenty of room for storage.
And then I suddenly had that warning!
The cause was temp made by the default ZIP utility that used up almost all my storage space. That utility works fine until I wanted to uncompress 160 mb zip from SD into another SD folder. It started uncompressing, used all storage temp space, gave me error, and closed. It didn't clean the temp though!
I cleaned a bit manually and then installed SK tools that cleaned my device properly and everything is fine now. It is very simple issue and similar to running out of disk space on a PC.
Bottom line: it is unlikely that usual apps use so much storage. I bet on downloads and big user files left in storage and finally huge temp files as leftovers of unsuccessful uncompressing for example.

Help me Understand Storage on my 101

I have just bought an Archos 101 16gb and downloaded just a few small apps.
I got a "Low on Space" notification today....but i cant understand why. Under /settings/staorage in shows under "Internal Storage" total space 14.44GB and available space 14.15GB.
I dont have an SD card yet
On system storage it says Avaialable space 25.25MB
Can someone help me understand whats going on here. Whats the differnce between Internal Storage and System storage and where do apps get stored by default....
Many thanks
Hey Pete,
System Storage is storage for apps that you can't put on internal storage or and SD card. Now, in order for you to only have 25mb free, you must have put a lot of data on there as well. I have a whole boatload of apps on my system and still have 162mb free on system storage (most are not on the SD). If you were to think of system storage in computer terms, it would be like RAM memory.
Internal storage is the storage where you put your data. Think of this storage as your "hard drive."
The next storage is, of course, the SD card. This is another place to store your data.
Finally, there is external storage. This is for things like flash drives and external hard drives.
By default apps load to the system storage area. You can go into your system preferences and move some to SD once you get an SD...but seriously, something else is at work for you to only have 25mb free right now.

Thank you that. Really helpful. So on my internal storage or "Hard Drive" I just have two apps, Aldiko and World Newspapers, totally 9mb.....
I had a look under /manage applications/downloaded and their is the AppsLib icon with 120MB next to it. That cant be right surely. This is just the Archos AppsLib app..... The MArket app is only 2.89 MB. If I look at the Application Infor for AppsLib under storage it says Total 120MB, Application 1MB and Data 119MB. What is this 119MB???
Also how do I set up storage preferences and what should they be.
Many thanks
OK, sotday the problem has changed. The missing 119MB of System storage has re-appeared. It seems that the AppsLib app which had shown 119MB of data cleared itself before I could uninstall it. No Idea why it had created 119MB of data in the first place.
So, can someone explain this for me. Not sure Im upto spead with this whole storage regime yet :-(
under /settings/storage "System Storage" was showing 119MB available.
I then downloaded Angry Birds (1.87 MB) and Angry Birds Seasons (1.99MB). Then checking /settings/storage "System Storage" now shows 104MB.
Next checking /settings/applications/manage applications and then clicking the "On Internal Strorage" tab I see the two Angry Birds apps there on Internal Strorage.
So my question is how come my "System Storage" has gone down by 15MB when the two apps only add up to less than 4MB. But, as manage apps shows them on the internal storage i.e. my 16gb storage, why did my system storage available space change at all. I'm very confused........
Update. I just checed AppsLib under /settings/applications/manage applications and its showing under application infor "Stroage" Total 41.46MB, Appkication 1.0MB and Data 40.46 MB. Whats going on here. What is the 40.46MB of data made up of. Its eating my System Storage.....Why?

have you installed Dolphin Browser HD or something similar?
In the options you can set cache to write into System Storage....
You should set the option to write cache into sdcard instead!!
Remember first to delete all caches...
I don't know if in the standard browser there is a similar option...
Honestly Pete, I have no idea what to tell you. I mean I'm not doing anything special and I have about 60 apps installed and still have 120mb of system storage, about 5gb of my 8gb internal storage and my 8gb SD card is maxed out with movies, music, documents, and some e-books I'm reading.
I have angry birds (not seasons...not feeling Christmas at the moment) and several other games as well.
I haven't done anything with the apps other than hit the "install" button. I know there are a lot I can move to SD, but since I don't need to I haven't.
The system memory does jump around though. As you use applications, load and unload, etc. Try using Archos's task manager to stop all apps, wait like 10 seconds (1 hippopotamus, 2 hippopotamus type 10 seconds...) , then check your storage. I bet that might be the issue. Hell, it almost has to be!

Thankyou. I think Im getting there. I noticed that in /settings/apps/manage apps the Archos AppsLib was showing 120MB. Weird I thought. So looking that the App Info for it said App 1MB data 119MB.
So I have uninstalled, re-booted and then sideloaded the latest build of AppsLib from Arcos. No App Info shows 1MB. Magically Angry Birds re-appeared too ...
This sounds like it has something to do with the problem and I now have to keep an eye on AppsLib to make sure it doesnt start eating System Storage Again.....
This seems very unusual to me. Maybe something is coded incorrectly by Archos in their latest release of AppsLib. Can others please tell me what amount of Data AppsLib has created on their devices? Thanks.
I havent got an external SD card yet, so I think that's going to be a must. Whats the biggest SD card that it can take? 32GB???
I should maybe also get Apps2SD. There seems a few versions out there. Who's the author of the one everyone here has loaded?
My appslib is 0.93mb of that, only .02mb is the data part.

Thanks. Mine is curretly 1.05MB. The data part being 0,05MB. I'll keep an eye on it now I have re-installed to make sure it doesnt creep up again. What version are you running?
the most recent one.
Im still having problems in thw whole storage and could do with some help.
The System Storage is listed as 299.44mb available when I look in App2sd. It shows I have 86.29mb available.
Using App 2 SD it shows the list of immovable apps on the System Storage. When I add up their indivdiual file sizes it comes to 65.919mb.
So where is the other 147.23mb gone?
Is System Storage where the Android OS sits? If so would that account for 147mb?
Many thanks Guys.

No, the OS is on a different partition, specifically a mounted squashfs. There will always be more data on the /data partition(System Storage) than is listed in the Applications menu. Keep in mind all the System Apps (ones you didn't install) will still need to store databases, settings, etc. on the /data partition, because the OS partition is read only.
147mb seems like alot, but my Archos has about the same amount of storage available(~86mb), and I have about the same amount of installed apps(~65mb), so I guess it's right.

No problem. I never really did the math, but it seems like an awful lot is used by non-download apps. I may have to do some crawling through the file system to see what's using so much.

If you discover anything please let me know. 147mb seems a lot to have gone missing
I contacted Archos support and they gave this answer:
"Dear Customer,
The information given by the 3thd party software is not correct, we do not support 3thrd part software.
Kind Regards,
Archos Technical Support"
So they are not helpful at all. Given the amount of money we pay for these devices you'd think they wouldnt just dissmiss my request for support and perhaps try and help even a little bit....
Do you both think that an operatingsystem can run without any memoryneeds?
Android is build for small memory devices but it still needs some memory or all that ui, threading, file and other services.
It is a bare Linux which consumes around 100MB depending on the features you have installed/switched on.
