Hi,
Some of you might remember I was going crazy with a problem with my "Send SMS" function when invoked from a Contact record: the SMS form came up, but with no name/number pre-typed in the To: field.
Yesterday I finally aced it. The problem was in my first few Contacts, which started with a " symbol (as in: "Bubbo" Smith) and the SMS form went crazy with that.
Apparently it didn't simply bork the " contacts, but also several normal contacts (probably N records after the last of N " records).
Now my hypotetical mr. Smith is called [Bubbo] Smith, and everything is ok!
Yay!

So i'm having a problem with texting on the g1.
1) receive a text from someone not on your contact list.
2) add user to contact list
3) reply to text message
4) text message thread name shows as someone else
5) text goes to first person on contact list
6) delete text thread
7) compose new text, (select that new person)
8) text goes to new person
9) text thread shows as the same person from as person in #4
10) person from #8 replies and you receive it just fine.
11) reply to that text, but it goes to first person on your contact list. You don't even have to reply, when you open the text thread, the top left name shows a different name.
I have 2 contacts on my list that is linked all funky.
I have tried deleting the contact from gmail and adding them again, but I still get the issue with them.
oh if you leave the retarded thread sms there (that is displaying the wrong name) and compose a new text to the original person #8. it sends an email to #8 (that #8 cannot reply to) but shows up in your text inbox with "(no subject)" as the message preview
i know you probably sound crazy but i've had that exact same problem but good job on the description
hbguy
i'm glad i'm not the only one. LOL
factory reset fixes the issue with that user's contact, but now I have to reinstall everything.
I had a similar issue where I had an email via mms sent to my phone monthly. Like, [email protected]
Once that came in - any sms I received (when I hadn't started the thread) would say it was from that email. When I tried to reply it would go to the first person in my contact list (Aaron for example) rather than the [email protected] or the original sending party.
Only way to fix it (and this is TMo's advice too since it's now a known issue) is to not get the email anymore and do a factory reset. (Haven't had the problem since then, but will be nice when it is fixed.)
Yeah, I've had this problem as well. Bloody annoying.
I am coming from owning a Rogers HTC Magic running stock Rogers ROM (1.5) with 911 update.
Just picked up an N1 the other day and although it's a great unit, there are some minor annoyances that are starting to get to me.
One is the native text messaging app. Now, I am a real estate agent so I receive a lot of text messages from my office. With my Magic and any other phone for that matter, these text messages would appear as "7000" as the sender name/number for example as these messages are sent through a computer via the internet. It's very similar when you receive a text from your carrier wherein it's not coming from another phone, and it's typically shown as a number as indicated above.
The problem is that this number no longer appears as the sender name/number. Instead, the sender name/number shows up as the first word in the body of the text. This may seem trivial, however, what happens now is that all the text messages I am receiving from my office are no longer grouped under "7000" for example. Instead, text messages appear as a separate thread (sender).
For example....if my office were to send a fictitious text that reads "this is a test text message", this is how it should and used to look:
7000: this is a test text message
With my N1, this is how it appears now:
this: is a test text message
The only way it will display the proper name/number in the sender field is when the text comes from an actual cell phone.
I have tried another text messaging app like Handcent and the exact same thing happens. Brutal.

Wild shot, have you tried saving a contact with the phone number "7000"?
The first thing I did was try to make a contact with the name "7000" but that didnt work. For some reason the text app does not compute the sender name unless it's an actual phone number or contact.
supergodie thanks for the link....looks like im not the only one...too bad that thread was started back in February and still no fix. Hope it doesnt take too long as I would hate for such a small detail to be a deal breaker for me.
The other annoyance I have is that the native mail app does not have an option for signatures! It also does not allow you to copy text like my Magic did with a long press on the screen and a menu popping up asking to you select text. You would think such "small things" would be an afterthought and not something that should be missed or left out...such basic things...it boggles my mind.
btw supergodie, have you found any workaround for this?
handcent as I have reported does the same thing...I think its because the app works off the native mail app....whatever the case, the problem still exists with handcent.
perhaps another sms app that works?
Sorry, I have not found a solution, I used to it, wait an update by google.
Firstly, I'd like to apologise if this has been touched up on before, I did a search but couldn't find much.
Secondly, I've been reading the forums for a while and thought I'd register as to seek help for my little problem...

To put it simply, I have all my contacts stored in my Gmail account. After installing Wildpuzzle, I decided to clean up my contact list to make my phone a bit more organised.
The problem, is that when I receive a text message (SMS) from anyone, it does not show up as their name in my Messages app. It simply shows the full number (inc. international dialing code) with no picture and no name.
For example, let's say I save 'Bob' in my Contacts list as: "07123456789". When I receive a text it does not show 'Bob's name, only "+447123456789".
Now, if I was to edit 'Bob's contact card so it was stored as "+447123456789" then it does show his name.
Has anyone else come across this before? I don't really want to have to go through all the phone numbers in my Contacts and put +44 in front and remove the 0.
Thanks in advance.
Its a known bug, has been posted in the wildpuzzle-thread many times. But if you have all your numbers on gmail-account its pretty easy to put "+44" before the numbers on each contacts, it took me about 10 minutes, only having like 90 contacts, but anyway, not that hard to fix with a little time =)
Yeah, I had a feeling that this was the case due to the lack-of-response from people.
Anyway, got bored at work so I changed them all now. Bit of a pain in the arse, but you have to make these sacrifices for such great software
I think I've got my application done, but it's hard to test.
It's a new SMS text blocker. Runs as a Service and checks incoming SMS phone number to Contacts. If not in Contacts, it goes to internal "spam" table as an unblocked number. If it's not in Contacts and already "spammed", the new message goes to "spam" as a blocked number.
If the new message/phone number is "unblocked", you can add it to Contacts or mark it as spam and the message/phone put in table as "blocked".
Everything seems to be working OK as far as adding to Contacts, deleting message from inbox if moved to spam (why save it twice?) and marking message as "read" (removes notification icon).
I'm wondering what to do with testing. It's hard for me to test it with emulator or sending messages from Verizon website. And a couple of friends are getting pissed at me for asking them to text me all the time! LOL
Putting it on the Market with a 15 minute refund really does not give purchaser a chance to test it (and I don't want to get users upset with me).
I think the best thing to do is put it on the Market as Beta and free. Then just add a check to code that limits the blocked numbers. Then get feedback from users on any problems or errors.
Comments please

Try something like GO SMS or handcent. That will rule out if its application specific, if that doesn't work maybe try deleting her as a contact and putting her number in manually when sending a text (or if she has multiple numbers that are marked as mobile, but are infact not). it might try send it to those.
obviously that's not a phone problem
Some settings went wrong, like ryronz said
I encountered this "problem" a couple of days ago when trying to send my daughter an SMS - tried twice, and twice it said "failed to send."
It turned out that it was because of her entry in the contacts list - her home number appears before her mobile number, so the 'phone was (by default) trying to send the SMS to the wrong number.
Have a look through the failed-send messages and you'll likely find the 'phone was trying to send them to her home or work number instead of her mobile.
Two things to do...
1. On your girlfriend's contact, long-tap her mobile number and select "Make Default Number."
2. From the contacts list, tap Menu -> Preferences -> View Contact, and tick the "Text Action for Mobile Only" tickbox.
Okej, will test that
