What FUN STUFF can you do on a PocketPC? Streaming video? - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario General

I just got my first pocket PC all dialed in. It is an 8125 and I put one of Summiters bare cingular roms on (THANK YOU SUMMITER!)...Its working good but it doesn't feel very "Customized" if you know what I mean. Kind of a boring "today" screen with the factory background... I only use it to make phone calls and browse the internet with the Pocket IE.
So I picked up WiFiFoFum2 and it is really fun and very useful - BUT I WANT MORE!!!
I was hoping you all could point me in the direction of more FUN STUFF or UseFull applications that would make my $250 purchase feel "worth it"! Stuff you guys really enjoy using on your pocket pc
Maybe things like:
* Streaming Video maybe watch or listen to music? (any free ways to do this? What programs?)
* Tap into Itunes broadcasts? (searched but couldn't find info? Anyone know the name of this program?)
* Best IM Client?
* BEST media player?
* Do I need to install codecs? Where or what is the install file called???
* Any good freeware programs? (registry editors, file explorers, etc...)
Thanks again for everyone that helped me flash/update my ROM!!!

best media player is tcpmp http://tcpmp.corecodec.org/download
link for codecs is also there

Have you tried Wardriving with WiFiFoFum?
It's fun to search and find all your local hotspots (locked or not).
I've found several hotspots with funny names like: "Try to get in Sucker!", "You anin't that smart", "Hack into this!", "Hack me" and such...
However, you'll be amazed how many unsecure hotspots there are... WIDE OPEN all the way into the local networks and PCs... Of course that't another story.

To view your pictures, music and videos on your pc using the phone check out orb.com

HEY SOME REALLY GOOD PROGRAMS MENTIONED HERE! Keep them coming!
I am having such a blast playing with all these!
I JUST DOWNLOADED " SiriusWM5". This is SOOOO COOOL. You signup online at sirius.com for a 3day free trial (you can do this as many times as you have e-mail addresses).
Then you run "siriusWM5" and it connects to over 50+ Sirius Sattellite Radio Stations! FOR FREE (until your 3day preview expires)...
I been listening to Howard Stern ALL DAY LONG through GPRS as I walk about my place of business!!!
VERY COOL!
WiFiFoFum:
YES, I tried the wardriving - It is AMAZING how many people are broadcasting UNSECURED hot spots!!! It would be so easy to just go in and add my MAC address to the "ALLOW List" so even if they did ever switch to WEP encryption I would still have a shot at connecting !

A Decent Task ( as in Programs ) Manager ? Suggestions ?

Hi all,
Used to using my old Jornada and that had an easy way of finding current programs that where running and close one or all - the Wizzrds a pain for this as you have to go to the settings screen etc rather than the main menu..... any one got any suggestions of a good today plugin or other prog ?
Thanks in advance ( sorry I'm asking so many questions - hopfully I will be up to speed soon and help others out my self )

pocketplus has one with the enhanced "x" in the corner you can hold it down to see a list of progs running and chose to end any of them.
I use Magic Button 2 which has a very convenient Today button and it is configurable to show more or less icons. Works great!

XBAR2!!
http://xetranet.free.fr/xbar2/?lang=eng&project=xBar 2&page=Download
Only 50 KB. It will not insinuate in the OS.
It is simple yet the depth of this soft is huge.
Task switcher, task killer, launcher you can manipulate it fully from Dpad thus it is well done for one handed operations. Just give it a try.
There is also GSP Pocket Magic
http://www.pocketpcfreeware.com/en/index.php?soft=1276
Both can work together very well as they do not try to interfere with the OS.
I don't use anymore pocket plus and wisbar advance. Too big, too complex (bugs), not fully compatible WM5/Wizard, too many slow downs.
Each time i have a problem I tend to think maybe it is because of wisbar or pocket plus.

Is there a freeware out on a great rss reader which downloads pictures from rss urls?
http://www.kasuei.com/hitchhiker/ workin under WM5?
If you want a solution for closing programmes (including hidden ones if you want) thats not main page based, Binarys smart phone explorer works on WM5 devices, and has soem cool functions.
Its freeware, the URL is

There is a new version for Xbar:
Xbar3
http://xetranet.free.fr/xbar2/?lang=eng&project=xBar 2
Of course it is not free but it is very cheap and it has some good new features:
- it supports mapping shortcuts to any key of the Wizard and that makes a lot...
- you can launch macros that are now emulating screen clicks.
Like if like me you want to quickly access the quick call list you just make a macro like this:
\Windows\cprog.lnk
xmacro=X200,Y200,D,U,
then I associated to the green key.
Therefore when I press action I call Xbar and when I click green key it lauches the macro and i go directly to my quick call list.
2 clicks.
One hand.
Possibilities are endless.
I got another idea.
I sync my XDA over Bluetooth. But if I don't switch BT off after synchronizing the battery empties too fast.
Maybe you could write a script that starts BT every hour or so, starts and connects ActiveSync, waits for the synchronisation and closes again. That would be really helpfull

VGA screens of your handheld browsing?

Since my wee JAM is dead (£85 to fix) I'm getting an XDA Exec to replace it - the 640x480 screen with WiFi and 3G appeals to me, since I no longer have a portable PC for my WiFi connection downstairs, and I wanna browse in bed!
Can someone post screens on the actual things browsing? Thanks!

Holy... Effing.. Jesus.
Sold.
EDIT: The Windows site is really terrible when it comes to promoting what their SW can do.... those few screens are fantastic...
Do us a favour, could yo also try http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=belfast&spn=0.005190,0.016145&hl=en as well, and what are you using to grab the screens as a matter of interest vijay?
I use Visual Studio 2005, which comes with a program called Remote Zoomin.
If you don't want to install this, use this:

V
Fantastic!
Hey vijay555,
What software is used to generate the "desktop" line screen view, rather than the "today" screen?
Also, what did you use to set VGA (I know of the VGA install available here - which I've tried)
However what did you do to display your dialer pad without the buttons being cropped?
And for anyone else, anyone yet know of a fix that allows us to toggle between VGA and QVGA depending on application?
Regards
Michael
Michael: the top two pictures are from a Universal running the VGA hack here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=32217&highlight=
Not that it's important I think, but i'm using VJNina font modfied from from the SPV phone; I've also minimised my scrollbars down.
The second two are using Terminal Services to log onto an XP Media Center PC. I'm using my VJFullscreenTSC app to make it entirely fullscreen:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=33759&highlight=
So the "desktop" start bar is coming from XP Media Center, on the PDA
I don't get your question about the Dialer buttons.
If you mean this in VGA:
this is using my VJBigPhone app
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=33971&highlight=
All are detailed ony my website www.vijay555.com
Another hack I'm working on is to minimise the soft buttons (the blue menu buttons at the bottom) down to a smaller size, relocate the Today tray and ultimately remove the Start Bar:

PS I don't think there's a dynamic VGA QVGA switcher yet
Vijay, great work by the way...
After much consideration, the only application I want in VGA on my Qtek 9000 is Internet Explorer Mobile. Is there any way to just make that program run in high-resolution? Everything else could be QVGA as far as I'm concerned.
I just don't like the idea of installing a ton of hacks and having to soft-reset between needs.
I swear I am starting to dribble
How about a screen shot of video playing too???

thank for this help. it is useful for me in my project

For those too posh to push:
Do you like chatting with people you don’t know? Do you want to be able easily share multimedia files with your friends? Do you hate the cost of MMS? Well now you can do it all via BlueTooth ? Find your target, take aim and let Sniper do the rest! Sniper is a MoSoSo (Mobile Social Software) application designed to operate using BlueTooth. Using Sniper you can send/receive and reply to text messages from other BlueTooth equipped phones (including non Windows Mobile devices such as Nokias and Sony-Ericssons). Sniper also contains a BlueTooth scanner which will locate discoverable BlueTooth devices in your vicinity to start socializing with. Sniper will also allow you to transfer files between devices as well as messages. With just a few clicks you can designate folders (on the storage card if you wish) for Music, pictures or any kind of file. Sniper is skinnable and comes with a range of cool skins. More skins may be easily added. Sniper also includes a Bluejacking feature which means you can send files or messages to all devices within range at the same time. A useful feature for sending out Business cards at meetings! Since BlueTooth is short range 10-12 meters and does not use a Wireless carriers data network, all this messaging and data transfer is FREE

Name just one?
Sniper is not just a BlueTooth manager.
With it you can
1. Send/receive messages and have an inbox
2. Allows the use of preprepared msg templates and you can create your own new ones at the touch of a button.
3. Send/receive files (to your storage card if you wish) and specify default folders for different incoming file types
4. Store often used addresses in address book with friendly names
5. Scan for all devices in Range
6. Sniper, will on request, BlueJack all devices in range with a file or msg until you tell it to stop.
7. Talk to any other BlueTooth device, doesn't have to be windows mobile.
This is just a sample of what it does and it's less than a fiver
So, what is the better freeware alternative???

Election 2008 Live Vote TICKER Software - for WM5/6

Is there a piece of software out there for Windows Mobile that will show the votes reported tonight as they com in, like on new sites where they are constantly updating the number of electoral votes for each candidate live as they come in?
Is there a vote ticker software like that for Windows Mobile?
I would love to be able to see the progress of the vote counts while I am playing multiplayer Mariokart Wii on my bigscreen without having to switch back and forth on the TV inputs
Thanks,
Use RSS Hub and search for the elections update feed...
LOLL crazy idéa
Hmm, where's RSS Hub downloadable? I am really looking for something that can go on the Today screen that will check every minute, and just say "R: ### / D: ###" you know, something even that simple. (like if R is for republican, and D is for democrat, and ### is their current electoral vote count)

*To add the new election feed, click on Elections 2008 > Add Channel > Live Election Results.
when downloaded where does the program actually go?
what do you mean by "where does it go"?
Just put the CAB file onto your device, then run it from there. (the CAB file is the installer, but you have to run it from the phone, not from your computer) It will let you ask, durin ginstall, if you want to install to your storage card or to your internal memory, you can choose either.
Then, you can access it by going to the start button and clicking "Viigo", or you can go into your Start menu preferences, remove the shortcut, and it will then show up in your Programs area.
ty..had to actually go into the programs folder and start it then it showed up..cool program...i wish the auto update was a little more flexible

Paid for software worth installing on TP2?

Hi Folks,
I know there is already a thread about software worth installing but these all seem to be freeware.
I'm just wondering if we can start a thread where people can put up a list of paid for software that is worth installing or not worth it? If there is already could someone please point me in the right direction?
If not, would you be so kind as to share what you have bought and why it is good or bad?
many thanks.
I have purchased a few great apps:
Cash Organizer - Money management program. Does graphs and budgets for finances and helps me track multiple accounts. I use this with my online banking to reconcile my bank account twice a week to know exactly where my money is at.
Backcountry Navigator - AWESOME GPS app that will download (from computer or device) US Forrest Service maps and tell you where you are on it. It will track your movement so if you go camping and hike for a couple hours, this will tell you where you are and you can find a quick easy way back. Must have for any outdoor people.
Nagivon - Turn by turn direction software for GPS. Not only does it do voice turn by turn but also says street names so I don't have to keep looking at my phone. On the freeway it shows real traffic signs and also lane guidance so it will actually tell you exactly what lane to be in when a freeway interchange or exit is happening. VERY cool app!
I'm a huge fan of Garmin XT for Nav. Not cheap, but in my humble opinion, very much worth it. I've also paid for Newsbreak (podcast catcher / RSS feed tool) - also very good.
Jamie
Backup options
SPB Backup
and
Sprite Backup
Both are paid apps, but they're the go-to options for most members here when it comes to selective- or full-system backups to/from your winmo phone. They can even do the backups to a new phone or different rom on the same phone.
Music and Media
I would have to say of all the media players I have tried, nothing beats the latest version of Core Player. For just sheer ease of use and ability to handle multiple file formats this media player is as good as it gets.
I definitely second Garmin XT. One of the features I use ALL the time is it showing the gas prices of all the closest gas stations.
I also think a good alarm/profile manager is a necessity.
