Device takes time to 'wake up' on power up - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro General

hello there
my device is taking time up to 30 seconds to respond after power up... this only occured after upgrading to new roms with AKU2 (from i mate in my case) .. i heard that this problem is common ... is there any turn around ??????????????

Not sure if this helps for the wakeup, but it clearly helps for the Start menu:
remove all shortcuts from the start menu that you don't really need. Particularly shortcuts to big programs such as Skype. Windows Mobile wants to display the icon for each shortcut, but the icon is at the end of the executable, and this takes a lot of time for large files.

I noticed that, too, about the icons. Had WolrdMate installed previously, and it took quite a fair amount of time to read and display the icon.
Now, about the wake up delay of about 2.5 to 3 seconds...(when the small circular power button is pressed)...I'm experiencing the same problem/issue. It's a fresh, hard resetted Universal with Dopod's latest ROM. Maybe someone can tell us what it's doing in those few seconds...

Also, if you have Resco Explorer 5.35 installed...it might cause a slow wakeup as well.

I am also having a similar problem (topic here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=56965 ). I did have Resco Explorer 5.40 installed so I removed it but the problem still occurs. I posted here because I figured that if there's a solution to any of our problems it may help the others.
Edit: my problem has been fixed by removing the SD card space monitor on SPB Pocketplus.

Slow, slow, sloooow

Hello,
I believe many of you are (or have been) having similar problems - I wonder if there's a solution for this?
The problem I have is that when the device comes back from sleep (that is, when I open it after not using it for a while) the screen lights up immediately, but the device is extremely unresponsive. Trying to click the Start menu (or anything else on the screen for that matter) will appear to do nothing at first - then when the device finally comes to its senses (10-30 seconds later) my clicks are "played back" at lightning speed. From then on the device is usable, but this delay is infuriating.
I have ROM 1.13.53 WWE (from Sep-23) with radio 1.03.01. My notifications database is small (15 entries) and I'm not running a lot of apps (I have PocketPlus installed).
Is anyone else having this problem? Is there a solution?
TIA
Are you using any Themes? Try switching back to the standard wm5 theme. My m5000 gets very glacier-like as soon as I try any other theme.
Try this.
Thanks for the replies!
I'm using the default theme. As for this Uni-Turbo thing, what does it do? Just so I know before I install it?
it will speed u your processor, after istall u will find the changing botton on Start/Settings/System/Power/Processor it works but using more power.
Im using this, it works Great ... i think its free, but
It essentially places a control panel file in \Windows which 'replaces' the power control panel item. The replacement is from another device, which has a Turbo Mode. So this gives you the ability to activate the turbo mode on your Universal. I've tried it - its safe to use and removing it returns things back to normal.
Try it and see if anything improves. I can guarantee though, that you'll see far more improvement by hard resetting (use Sprite Backup's free beta to backup emails, contacts, messages, etc).

If you have some Today plugins installed on your device it might slow down the response after turning it on.
For example:
I've got the Resco Explorer installed with it's Today plugin, and my device comes back with the plugin displayed in 15 seconds after opening it.
But when I turn off displaying Resco Today plugin it comes back immediately, after opening... (0,5 secs)
HoPe
My Uni works very well, but then I use it for next to nothing, but I keep memory clean with VJOkButt and stay away from memory resident stuff.
Although not exactly for this question, installing the extended rom dialler had a dramatic impact on speed on mine. If you don't need the pretty buttons, I highly recommend the stock MS Dialler.

Start button slowdown on first use
On the issue where the start button doesn't seem to do anything for a while after a suspend or soft reset:
The reason is that an application is listed in the Start Menu which resides on the SD card. What happens is that the Start menu tries to load the icon of the application from the SD card, which first has to wake up, causing the slowdown.
Same thing happens when you're browsing through the Programs folders (Start -> Programs), and there is a pause while loading the application shortcuts.
It's quite annoying, and I think it may be related to one or other registry hack.
Use SmallMenu!

BeyondTheTech has an interesting article somewhere on Skype with this issue.
I just use SmallMenu, the normal StartMenu is useless to me.
Uninstalling the extended rom - i don't think so. You can probably manually delete the files it installs, but it'd be incredibly tedious and perhaps inaccurate/unstable. Best is to hard reset and setup again, but that's also tedious.

So how come then I have the same thing when browsing anything for the first time after the soft reset even when I have NOTHING installed on the SD card?

If you are using SPB Pocket Plus or any other similar software and allowing the SD card indicator on your today screen just remove it and you will realize the difference.
Also avoid to use any battery indicator on today screen as it will slow the device as well.
My last advice to you if you are using SPB Pocket plus is to un-install it and use any other similar program like Resco today plugins.... this will also speed up your device becuase the available version of SPB pocket plus is not completely compatible with WM5.
Regards,
I am using SPB PP (beta release) and its fast, but I didnt have a real problem with the earlier releases. I also use SPB diary and SPB Weather, and still no real problem, slightly sluggish but not intolerable.
My device wakes up perfectly immediately every time, and rings at the beginning of the second ring.
1. Remove SD card and battery monitors
2. Disable some of the additional SPB plug ins that you dont need like safe mode boot, PIE plug ins, battery monitor etc
3. Remove the antivirus software
4. Disable error reporting
5. Disable auto receive beams
6. Try disabling SPB altogether and see if it is still sluggish and unresponsive
7. Dont have anything on SPB or other that is immediately directed to the SD card as the SD card takes longer to recognise on wake up
8. Consider not switching the device off. I never turn it off, at all, wind down screen brightness, disable auto off, but auto off the screen only, close the clam shell switches off the screen but doesnt switch off the machine. the screen sucks the battery, not the processor.
Let me know if you have had any luck with this.
Perhaps you could also:
1. Ensure you have the latest rom from the website
2. Dont allow the extended rom to install (hard reset, and press reset when it says customising device), then use total commander to go to the extended rom and selectively install the items you need, this forum is full of information for this.

I just tried it and I have to admit I already like smallmenu. One question please: How do I customize smallmenu?
It seems to me it is locked at the following list:
Today
Programs
Favorites
Commonly Used Programs
Settings
Suspend
SmallMenu
I reset my device before any of the crap from Ext.Rom could install. I now have a speeeeeedy device. Oh, i am using an i-mate Jasjar btw.

I disagree, try to power off the device every time you close the clam and power it on when you open it and you will see how much the battery life will improve. It really makes the difference, I just can't be bothered and am too lazy to do it  I charge it every night anyway.

Enlarge your today screen (how to remove the bottom menu bars)

If you're looking to get rid of the menu bar at the bottom of the Today Screen, read on. This is not a new tip, but might save you time, as there's a lot of different versions of these programs flying around. Only the one below works on WM6 / HTC Touch.
I personally find that the Menu Bars at the bottom of the Today Screen really spoil the look of the HTC Touch's sleek black/grey theme. Besides, the Comm Manager and Contacts are both accessible via the spinning cube (or the camera button if you install Double Launcher) so there's no need to have on the Today Screen, you may as well get more space for plugins, or just to keep everything looking neat and tidy. See screenshot below!
Here's how to banish them forever (?!) :
1. Download ToggleTodayIIAlpha from this link:
http://www.vijay555.com/vj/releases/vjtoggletodayii/vjtoggletodayiialpha.exe
2. Copy it to your \Windows\Startup directory. (or somewhere else and paste a shortcut instead)
3. Go into the registry and edit this key:
HKLM/Software/Vijay555/VJTodayToggle
Change these keys:
Softkeysize = 1
StartSize = 26
TrayVisible = 1
That's it! I've had no massive problems with this so far, although I haven't been testing it for too long. I'd be interested to hear how people get on in terms of stability/bugs. You WILL get problems if you try to use any of the older VJTodayToggle programs in the thread on this forum:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=243211
(SIP keyboard staying on, SIP moving to the top of the screen, menu titles disappearing but not the background, etc.)
...in fact, that's precisely why I'm sharing this info with you, as this thread is 39 pages long and it's only towards the end that things become totally clear! I'll post again if there's any unexpected side-effects, I'm currently minimising BatteryStatus and I don't know whether this will
Good luck!
Carlos
NOTES / ADVANCED
=======================
A: If you want to make your screen even neater AND still overclock your Touch, then, in step 3 above, you can make TrayVisible=0 then you can minimise the BatteryStatus plugin and it won't show up on your today screen. (right click on batterystatus icon, choose 'show rows -> minimise') I haven't tested this properly yet.
B: If you want to explore hiding the Start Menu, feel free, it looks superb when you first do it, but then I have found that the HTC biotouch (spinning cube) automatically re-instates the start menu bar when it's deactivated each time.
C: Please note, this program ( tt2.exe) DOES NOT TOGGLE, even though it's called that! Again, it's a 39 page thread, I warned you...
D: You can also run TT2.exe with a -config option to avoid editing the registry, but this would actually make the above even more long-winded to explain to any n00bs.
E: A nice new HTC wallpaper is doing the rounds without the logo. (As you can see from my screenshot, it's mis-positioned with the extra screen space) See http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=319830
F: Vijay555 has been meaning to release a new (non-alpha) version of the software for some time, but sounds pretty busy. He seems like an all-round splendid guy though and I'd like to thank him for this software and his continued postings/programming.
I have the HTC X7500 WM6 and I've been desperate to make it works.
I've been trying other version from the 40 pages thread, so I'll try this one and I will post result.

Good luck! The honest truth is that after I'd posted this, I discovered a couple of bugs that appeared in soak testing. I gave up in the end - it worked 90% but I would still occasionally get conflict, e.g. the SIP keyboard would appear at the top of the screen sometimes and only a soft reset would put it back where it was meant to be!

Yep I confirm that, SIP keyboard is there, and sometimes as well softkeys stay there after softreset.
Well actually for me it's even worse, it's hiding the system tray (the bar just above the softkeys bar) where we can add shortcuts icons and keep the softkeys bar enabled..
Im disappointed but thks for vijay555 for all the efforts
Perfect... without HTC Logo is even better...
Thanks Carlos,
I've just installed and its working fine. With the clean background from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=319830 looks even better.

See my original post, have you tried setting TrayVisible=1 in the registry, this should show the system tray.
I followed exactly what u posted, it displayed it correctly the first time, then after soft reset it was displaying only the softkeys bar and hiding the system tray bar

How does this look on screens BESIDES the today screen? I have used other programs on different WM phones in the past and although the bottom bar disappears on the today screen, it is still on other screens.
Also, can you use the bottom of the screen or is it just dead space? Some of us have moved the HTC Home Plug to the bottom of the page and if it is just dead space, it is going to look bad....

The menu bar is visible on other screens, this behaviour is by design. I cannot see why anybody would want it invisible on other screens, as you normally need those softkeys for menus in most programs!
As far as I know you can use the bottom of the screen, it is not dead space. But why not try it out - it's unlikely to do any harm. You can always delete it from your startup directory to uninstall if you don't want it.

Use the HTC Home customizer to "unlock" it. Then you can move it around like normal.
However, it doesn't redraw correctly on the right side if you unlock it, and a scrollbar comes and goes.
i have a other solution!! PCM shrink installe it and your bar remove it s very easier! For become to the original config juste delete the programmz!!
won't stick
Hi..very nice and easy Zip File..just one problem: the toggle won't stick after a soft reset = one has to go into File Explorer..double click the Toggle File and only than the screen is "clean" again.
Any way to make the toggle "stick"?
I have not this problem! I install the cab i going on the explorer and today shrink and clik on after i reboot my pda ans the bar not appear ... You can try put a abbreviated of today skrink in WINdows/started for star the application automatic on windows sartup
the result of the appl:
I have this running at startup on my Tilt, works with screen rotations and everything! And the hard keys are still mapped to calendar and contacts for quick access, awesome.
Many thanks, couldn't stand those useless soft keys before.

Bugs in WM6 Roms- share your experience-come in everybody

cheers there,,
it was only until yesterday that i had the courage to flash my BA to windows mobile 6...
To be honest ... you guys did a great job..
however, bugs have made their way into this one as well, so i will i will be asking you guys to post all your bugs in the following format:
ROM version:
bugs in :
PHONE:
WIFI:
PROGRAMS:
etc...
rom version: 5.2.1629
radio rom : 1.12
proplems:
phone:none
wifi: i can't use the wireless manager to turn on the wifi
prgrams:
1) x-button is not working , all programs are minimizing instead of closing, despite of the x-button being correctly configured
2) i cant get to type arabic letter with the keyboard, though allthe other arabic functions are working,
performance: the device is a bit sluggish
THINGS THAT ARE ANNOTING BUT DONOT REPRESENT A BUG:
1) button lock is not there,,, it is really annoying to find out that your BA is making a random phone call while in your pocket !!
2) I really liked the broadcom bluetooth stack , can i get it working here?
3) sim contacts appear in the phone book and there is no option to disable this , it would be really nice if i could get rid of the duplicates
and again:
thank you guys big time, especially HELMI for the super work,,
waiting for everybody to share their bugs
you can use comm manager, you just have to turn it on tru wlan settings esp after every SR, but after that you can activate it using comm manager. just like wm5...
one thing i noticed is the lack of keyboard sttttuttttteeeerrrriinnnnggg... which is great news since i always use the keyboard via one-handed operation.
x button is working on my unit, which is easily noticed since i have wisbar.
one bug i noticed though is that whenever ur connected to the pc and its syncing with the BA, it will totally freeze the BA for the duration that the pc and BA are syncing, sometimes causing the BA to hang.

It would be nice to switch on Wireless withou having to click on several items though - especially when using spb backup and auto restart after backup and profiles in phonealarm.
- WLAN activation problem
- keyboard problem (repeating characters after releasing keyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy...)
- phone doesn't work sometimes ("R" and "G" are "NONE") after softreset --> another softreset *immediately* after "R NONE" and "G NONE" appear.
- no ActiveSync --> activate "USB to PC" in Settings, Connections.

the ROM is actually super great, it is just that we want to make it greater
also, it would be actually very nice if there was some sort of a power-saving fix-

I've experienced that sometimes during set up...It happened somewhat randomly, but not so much to prevent me from doing what I needed to set up. Also, it doesn't do it now that everythig is set. You might try:
1. make sure all your plugins are not enabled in the normal Today set up before you try to add them into a tab or sub tab.
2. properly set the "Activate plugin on startup" and "Save memory" checkboxes. I generally have the first only checked on the "main" tab items and unchecked on all other tabs. Also, I generally have the "Save mem" unchecked for the main, and checked for the others.
I can't say this will stop it from happening, but i did expereicnce different results when I played with them some...

Thanks a lot for the answer...I've followed you tricks...but in my case the problem appears in a systematic way :-((((
I love UL but its still a tiny bit buggy. It just doesn't seem to like certain today plugins. I don't have a rhyme or reason for it, but sometimes it doesn't play nice.
PocketWeaver?
Could it be PocketWeaver? I've used UL for several months now with MANY today plugins. Currently I am using it with both PocketDigitalClock and TodayAgenda. Since PocketWeaver is the only one I haven't tried could that be what UL is not behaving well with?
At one time I had 5 plugins running in 3 tabs and UL setup has never hung for me.

I'm testing this nice app but I've got several problems after the first setup.
If i insert in the varius tab more than 2 today plugins like Pockerweaver and Pocket Digital Clock in one tab and Todayagenda in other one, every time i enter into the program setup for adding or modifing something and i confirm the modification, my device hang. I need to softreset.
Does someone else have the same problem?
I've got I tyTn (I've tested with both WM 6.0 and 6.1)

How long did you wait before a soft reset. On my device I have to wait quite a bit for the screen to refresh after any configuration changes. I have 4 tabs with 7 plugins going right now and it does not hang.
I noticed I couldn't get the Audio Manager plugin to work properly in UL, wouldn't expand on selection.
I have phone weaver running without issue. Phone Alarm was giving me problems and very infrequently batterystatus

UPDATE: i think to have found the reson why...I've set all the ico dimension to a "correct" dimension, like for an ICO with maximum of 48px i've set 48px and not 52 or something more and for an ico of 68 i've set 68 not more or less...and all is working weel now. I can do ini refresh and modify the settings without any phone hang.
I figured I try out UltimateLaunch and I made a new tab and added BatteryStatus today plugin. It locked up, after soft reset it locks up within a few seconds. Any ideas how I can fix this without a hard reset? Thanks
Chris
EDIT: I was able to get to the Today screen and disable UltimateLaunch after about 20 tries and some caffeine! I disabled battery status in the today screen this time and turned of the minimize in Ultimate Launch. This fixed my issues. Thanks anyway.
Chris
Sorry a newbie question. How do I actually put in more than 1 today plugin into the home tab of UL? Does the software allow that? I would like the whole today screen to rotate n not only part of it.
Thanks in advance for the reply.

Adjust the height and add a 2nd plugin, just like you did with the 1st.

If you want to have more than one today plugin on the same tab (i.e., HTC Home with another plugin underneath it) be sure to "combine" the tab.
FYI, the perfect fixed height for UL, with the system tray still visible, is 245 pixels.
Thanks very much for all your help. I got it.
Maybe you Gurus can help me....
I wish to have MyFaves as a UL plug-in but it will not show up unless I have it checked in the Today screen items, then it shows up twice (once in UL & once on my Today screen). Can anyone help me? BTW I have a cooked ROM & am using DuPrade's MyFaves cab file.

...267 if you don't have the system tray.
I too experienced some lockup issues using Battery Status. I have since unloaded it and no lockups since. I'm thinking it's anything actively monitoring the system that UL doesn't like. Although i have RLToday installed and using it for my msgs notifications, but that is a registry read.

Automatically Disconnect Data Connection

Fellow Titan Users,
I've been reading and applying most everything that this forum has to offer and I've got to say it's awesome. I feel like I've learned a lot, and I'm continually trying to do so.
I have a fairly simple question prefaced by my situation: I'm very careful with my battery and anytime for example I use my internet, as soon as I close it I turn off the data connection to save battery life.
Is there a program, or a script that anyone is aware of....that as soon as I close Internet Explorer / Java Opera 4.1, or Opera 8.65, etc, that within 15-20 seconds or so of no use it would be disabled?
Additionally, is there anyway to click the top connection bars and have a way to just hit an X button(much like SPB Pocket Plus does) to close it? I have the Comm Manager button on the side of the Titan that I use to open up Comm Manager, then click the Data Connection icon and then it closes. I'm hoping for something that will save a few more seconds.
Thanks for any help, advice or ideas.
Yea,its called internet connection sharing,it (or so it seems) automatically drops connections anywhere from 30 seconds to 5 minutes after you open them. ;-)
Seriously though,I think there might be some registry settings for autodisconnect, but I dont really know what they are. Ive been trying to get mine to STAY connected.
I just press and hold the red 'end call' button, that does it nicely.
There is also an ap, (I think it's schapps advanced config) that lets you set a time of inactivity to auto-disconnect. However there are some who have had other problems after using the ap.
there is also an registry setting...it allows you to click the connection icon on the screen and a disconnect button is displayed which is what i do and its sooo much easier and disconnects without you having to open up comm manager i have the new rom and its custom so ye it still works without a hitch The Vision duration registry
This edit allows you to see the duration of your Vision connection along with a button to disconnect it. You see it in the bubble that is displayed when you tap the Vision icon.
Click HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
Click ControlPanel
Click Phone
[at this point, the buttom grey status bar should read \HKLM\ControlPanel\Phone'
Click the bottom menu 'edit'
Select new dword value
Change the value name to "Flags2" (no quotes).
Select the 'hexidecimal' button.
Type 10
Click ok.
You should now see in the 'name/data' section:
Flags2 16 (0x00010)
When done, reset the device.

Works great.

I tried that yesterday and for some odd reason then my GPS could nto get a lock at all... When I restored the old registry then it came back to working.. Dunno why or how but just a warning out there..
If you're really concerned with battery life, get the seidio extended battery. I've gone the entire weekend (fri, sat, sun) without recharging my batter, running flexmail with 8 different imap accounts, using google maps with gps and a little wifi at night ending up with 50% battery on monday! That is CRAZY!
Worth mentioning i run flexmail all day, so that is a constant drain and thus has the inet connected all day. Before i'd have to fully charge my phone 2-3 times a day. 2 without talkingon it for a little bit.
Try these:
Code:
REGEDIT4
;Enable auto disconnect GPRS if not use 60 seconds
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Comm\ConnMgr\Planner\Settings]
"CacheTime"=dword:0000003c
"SuspendResume"="GPRS_bye_if_device_off"
;Disable auto connect GPRS
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\PhoneExtendFunction]
"EnableCPHSONS"=dword:00000001
"NoGPRSAutoAttach"=dword:00000001
Pocket Toolman is quick and handy for adjusting these settings, has a lot of other tweaks included, and is freeware.
Thanks
I've been using PocketToolman. It's real simple and works quickly, thanks a lot. Also, thanks to everyone else that made suggestions.
