I am one of those users that is having trouble connecting to GPRS more than once and getting the "unknown reason" problem. Only a soft reset or turn on/off flight mode will fix it. Well I found out what is causing this, at least for my device. I am running Wisbar Advance on mine and is what causing the problem. Once I closed the app, I can connect/disconnect GPRS as I please. I made calls in between also and it still works...
The developer for Wisbar is working on this issue so hopefully he will get this fixed. In the meantime, I have turned off Wisbar..
Hope this is what causing u guys' devices also.
Great info! Just a heads up. I had this problem since I upgraded to the 1.06 ROM however I have never installed Wizbar Advance. The only thing that I could get to fix it was upgrading to the Norwegian 1.11 ROM version or using the 1.10 US Radio stack. Even the Finish 1.11 did not fix the problem.
-Mashie
I have the problem and I'm not using Wisbar. I guess magician_os1.11wwe_bigstorage_6.zip is based on the Finnish ROM?
You can add another application to the list of problem apps (at least this worked for me)
Sygic .mobile contacts seems to mess up GPRS as well.
I've been using the 1.06 WWE rom, and i tried anasky's 1.11 bigstorage rom, and both times, with .mobile contacts installed, i received the "cannot connect for an unknown reason" error, after uninstalling it, GPRS reconnects fine everytime.
Hope this helps some of you.
i changed my sim card to a new one and now i don't get that error. plus i believe that part of that error is the service provider.
hope that helps
I have Qtek 1.11 and same problem too
It is a real pain, I do not have Wisbar, and I can only connect once then need a reset. Any ideas out there?
One cheap solution is to put the phone in flight mode and then go back to reset the GPRS. Not very smooth, but at least better than having to soft reset.

I have tried to turn flight modem on/off but i still get the error
"dialed:isplnk1.swip.net. The answering modem has disconnected. To check your connection settings and change them if needed, tap settings"
Does ne1 know what I can do? so I can use my gprs again. it worked fine just a day ago, and I havent done anythin at all that could cause this problem
I don' t have a magician but a blue angel.
I've got the same problem.
It's the last built of IA Caller ID.
I've make a hard reset with no IA Caller and no problem again.
just double check the settings to make sure that the access point name shows up in the number section of the connection settings, when its not there that can cause the answering modem problems

I have 2 SIM Cards with the same number, one for the QTek 2020, and one for a Motorola mpx200.
If they are both switched on, then my GPRS is disconnected after about 15 minutes, and I can only reconnect by going in and out of flight mode.
If I switch the Motorola off, then I stay connected, and can disconnect
and reconnect properly.

Never had that error message. Only the one hamsup1o was talking about. Is the Norwegian 1.11 Ananskyfied yet? I want to test if the problem is fixed in that one.
For me, I don't think it's any one piece of software. Since I upgraded my Jam last weekend to 1.11, it continually disconnects from GPRS. Soft resets may or may not correct the problem on the first try so a second reset is in order. Trying to turn Flight Mode On/Off is a chore in itself. I may need to tap "Turn Flight Mode On" several times before it finally does it. Even when GPRS is connected it will only last 5 minutes. Then while still connected, going to a different webpage, says that webpage cannot be found. Very freakin' frustrating!!
So, today at work I backed everything to SD and did a Hard Reset. I then cancelled out of the Operator settings, but allowed the other apps to install and soft reset. I manually added my data settings and connected. Within two minutes I lost my connection. Reset the device and couldn't connect. Reset again and it's fine. It's hit or miss. Restored from backup. Gave a MS Voice Command error so deleted that. Several resets later on the train ride home and it's been fine ever since, for now!
The question is, could this be a T-Mobile problem? I called them yesterday and all they could tell me is that data outages in the Boston area may occur in the evenings due to upgrades. Perhaps it's just a coincidence that I did the ROM upgrade and TMo is acting up. I'm pulling hairs here!!

I have the exact same problem with my Jam on T-Mobile (in Colorado) however it seems to have gotten better with the 1.11 ROM. The strange thing is that it does not ever happen with my 6315 on T-Mobile. I have spoken with their customer services serveral times and we have tried a few different things. The last thing we tried was a brand new SIM card to remove that as a posible problem. Since doing that, I can stay connected to GPRS, take calls and it re-connects with out me doing anything and it seems to have helped.
I have not tried to see if there is any change between wap.voicestream.com or internet2.voicestream.com. Which are you using?
I have the same problem with GPRS and the Cannot connect for an unknown reason. It initially connects fine, but if I disconnect it manually, I cannot reconnect without the soft reset. I started getting this error when I upgraded to 1.11WWE last night. I went back to Version 1.06WWE and the problem was gone so it is defiantely a ROM problem. Imate's Customer "Dis"-Service continues to timeout everytime I go online with them. I am in the process of trying the UK 1.11JAM Rom to see if that makes any difference. I am with T-Mobile USA.
On the Club I-mate forum there are people with this problem as well and one of them is on Cingular!!! So it's not carrier specific.
__________edit
I tried the UK 1.11 ROM and it worked a bit better. There was even a new tab in the GPRS bubble that you could click to disconnect the GPRS rather than holding down the red phone button. But alas, I still got the Cannot Connect for an unknown reason mesage. I'm going back to 1.06 (Thankfully I backed it up) It worked fine. Is anyone having this problem with the Anansky hacked ROM?
Also, why does the UK version come with Skype and the WWE version doesn't?
Could it be due to Activesync?
I too have the GPRS problem, usually it occurs after synchronizing with the PC. The flight mode trick fixes it. I can repeat this behavior and can always fix it, so it remains a nuisance...
Since you can access the internet through Activesync, maybe the OS stays locked in that mode and does not allow for GPRS to be a valid network connection...
Anybody else have similar symptoms?
Mashie, I use internet3.voicestream.com. As you said nothing seems to help.
chinadan, Yes! I had the exact same thing happen to me last night. I've been tinkering with my Jam for the last week trying to get it to work. Last night it was working fine, but then I connected it to my desktop to load PHM Registry and when I disconnected, GPRS started flaking out! Performing a soft reset didn't help.
I've been going back and forth with i-Mate CS, and it's obvious they know there's an issue. They seem to be getting a little testie since I'm basically telling them I'm not an idiot so please get the crap fixed! They had the nerve to send me instructions on how to setup a GPRS Connection on the Jam! What nerve!
Anyway, think I'll try loading the worldwide 1.11WWE and see what happens. Anyone have a backup of 1.06 US 850 ROM?
Thanks and cheers!
Well, I went almost 24 hours without a GPRS problem on my JAM yesterday. I didn't get the usual "Cannot connect for an unknown reason" error message. This time I got a message saying that there was a problem with the modem???? I don't know where that one came from... changed my gprs setting to internet2.voicestream.com and it works now....until the next error message.
Screw it. I'm going back to 1.06. The JAM is VERY sluggish now and I can't even get it into flight mode to correct the problem. I guess I'll wait for the patch. (It seemslike we spend most of our time waiting for a patch or an update of some kind. ARGGGHH!)
ALso, I don't know if this was the case with the 1.06 ROM, but I used to have to hold down the red phone button for a few seconds to get the GPRS to disconnect. But with the 1.11UK rom all it takes is for you to click the red phone button and the connection is dropped. Example: If I'm on the Today Screen with GPRS connected, click the red phone button and voila, gprs is disconnected. Is this normal? I don't remember it disconnecting so easily with 1.06.

Any chance you give us a link to those pics? Pleaseeeeeeee
Ok, been tinkering around this evening concerning the GPRS connection issues and this is what I have thus far. First, Club IMate has new Operator Settings on their website. One of their techs was kind enough to e-mail it to me this afternoon and checking their website this evening shows T-Mobile ver1.6. Applied those settings and it seemed to do a better job at installing my VPN settings for internet3.voicestream.com. However, when I checked the Connections screen it listed My Isp with my VPN connection and My Work Network was setup for wap.voicestream.com. Ok, nice but I don't use the wap settings. Connecting through IE to wap.yahoo.com resulted in the TMo Wap connection to launch, but not my VPN connection. So I went back into Connection settings and set both Work and Internet to "My ISP". Upon doing this and selecting any website from IE, it wouldn't connect and give me the error "Make sure you have your modem installed blah, blah, blah". If I then press and held on the "G" and tapped connect, it connected just fine.
So that got me thinking about the Registry again and why in the Connection screen for both Internet and Private network, why there was no option for "The Internet", or "My Secure WAP" so forth and so on. When I had my XDA IIs, those where options. So I loaded PHM Registry to the device and went exploring. The first thing I found and deleted was in: \HKLM\Software\HTC\WModem. I deleted the Preset GPRS key. The next thing I found where all the Interent settings I just mentioned in:
\HKLM\Software\Microsoft\ConnMgr\Destinations\. There is listed "The Interent" (which I tried to create myself in Connections but it said it already existed) and My Secure Wap plus others that I had made. So for starters I deleted "The Internet" key and reset the device.
Went back into Connections and created a new network called The Internet and added my connection to internet3. I then switched it to only look at The Internet network. Launching IE again and trying to go to wap.yahoo.com. Again, I get the "Unable to Connect: Ensure that your modems are presentand inserted correctly, and no network card present".
So obvioulsy, my edits to the Registry made little difference. So again that got me thinking. Why would their be a WAP connection when I selected T-Mobile VPN during the new cab installation? Because it needs it!
I then went back into the Network Management screen under connections and left it set to The Internet for programs that auto connect to the internet and set it to My Work Network for the private network option. Since doing this I've had no issues when any connection while browsing. If I go to a WAP site it automatically connects to T-Mobile WAP connection. If I then decide to go to a full blown HTTP website, it automatically stops the WAP connection and launches the VPN one. There is no delay when it does this, well, maybe a second!
My thinking is (and, I'm no programmer or Registry master!) that the problem lies in the Registry settings for IE. Perhaps it runs deeper than that but if one of you Guru's could take a look perhaps we can get this ironed out once and for all. Thanks for listening!
Today in the morning i started the day with taking the HD and the opera. Opera was opened by clicking a favourite from TF3D. But after the established UMTS connection opera closed surprisingly very fast and the "settings" menu started self.
"New connections database available, please install"
I affirmed the download, it installed and the HD shuted down without question and needed manually restart. I found no problems after that.
What does it mean? I never experienced such kind on my other HTC or WM devices.
I have not activated the automatic Windows update in settings!!! And also all other update modes in different progs i believe i have set to manually. ???
Yes, same here, except i didnt touch opera. The message came immediately after USB-connecting the HD to my PC. The download failed with a network error, and i still havent been able to complete after >10 tries.
Looks like it comes from 208.188.89.139, which resolves to 208-188-89-139.ded.swbell.net. I dont have a clue who that is and what it means, somebody else maybe?
it's done exactly what it says it has, it has downloaded and installed a new connections database. you know, the one used by the automatic connection setup wizard that triggers after a hard reset. it is desired behaviour and nothing to worry about (unless they've removed your carrier)! ;-)
This could mean the preconfigured profiles for various operators and their packet data (read: internet) connections. It just means the phone knows how to set up the packet data modem settings according the operator. So maybe it wanted to connect some htc database to pick up more recent configurations files? Someone could mail to htc and ask whats going on.
Got the same message right now. It's downloading right now....
update: due to connection error failed to download new database....

Does it mean there is allways an (not indicated) automatic connection check-up wizard in the background running and a permanent update check?
I couldn't believe this. And i don't like it!
It's very suspicious to me if my HD talks with other sources without informing me! This could also be not good for the datarate and battery.
it at least asks before it does anything. There are other companies who handles this much worser (ms, sony, etc.). Those do it without asking the end user lol.
Maybe this is ROM or carrier dependant?
Mine didn't ask or download anything.
i notice it after plugging in the usb to active sync with the computer.
I have ActiveSync running the whole morning, even reconnected the phone a few times.
Won't download anything though, which I don't mind.
Got the same message for 4 times this morning, every time it tried to connect, but it won't download more than 1%. Does anyone what it is trying to download and why?
lol mine keeps failing the download. furthest he got was like 30%
In other words if i update the few Kb on weather or stock application or during a fast email check, the HD checks additionally and secretly for updates? Sounds for me like the Vista automatic update blah. I want to stop that "wizard". If someone hacks that magician and add it to coming ROM updates it's dangerous.
It's not happend to my uncle HD
installing it for the 10th time today
just to get rid of that alert, everytime i say yes to download the update on my HD, and then it says failed.
now it stopped at 8% again
If this a hidden but common process with a today new published update, hundreds of HDs trying to connect now and to download the file. 6h ago i found no download problems. Now all of you other guys in Europe and Egypt are awakened
Yep I too have just recieved that message. At 49% and happily downloading, does help I am on HSDPA at the mo so no issues. I suggest that the people having issues check that they have a good internet connection or get on a wifi network.
Or htc servers are just getting a bit hot
Hehe maybe they should've rolled this out little more carefully.
Mine stopped at 1% through usb cable.
same for me i download it and it soft rest
Just popped up a few times on mine as well - constantly failing.
Hi all
Slightly different to Gadgetwing's problem earlier today, i am finding i am getting data connection seemingly randomly turning itself on. I have assumed its a MMS being sent through but nothing seems to arrive. Im pretty sure its not the weather or gps updates (i dont have these automatically updating). It doesnt happen often, but it did happen when i was abroad* and i wasnt sure whether actual data was being transferred that i will be paying for! Soft resets seem to solve the problem at the time, but im wondering whether its doing it when i am not noticing.
Im aware i can turn off MMS/internet connections manually with HDtweak, but any idea why it might be doing this?
Ive had my Touch HD around 6 months - its a stock ROM i dont have much installed (tomtom, Ms reader). I tend to only use the internet using wifi. I havent installed anything recently - the only change has been to ask Orange to turn roaming on. Last time it happened i was texting at the time.
TIA
* although not as bad as i travelled from the UK to Italy with my XDA IIs and it managed to dial out back home whilst in my pocket and leave a long message on my answer phone at an extornate cost!
Hello all,
Not sure if anyone else is having this problem.
First of all, better to mention what my Aria is running on:
Stock ROM unrooted. Updated to Froyo from HTC via FOTA. I'm not located in the US therefore my phone isn't under AT&T which many here are. My ROM is strictly HTC's Asia's ROM.
Now I don't have much in a way of problems with my phone, its just odd to me that every once in a while (around once every week or so) I need to reboot my phone. This is because for some strange reason, my phone won't connect to the data network (3G) or it shows that it is connected but no data activity (even after I've instructed the phone to sync all information, i.e. weather, emails, etc). I've tried switching on/off the data network connection and also have tried switching between airplane modes on/off (in hopes to reset something) but nothing works.
I'm not sure if this is an inherent problem to the Aria's 2.2 update or if there is something wrong with my carrier, however the problem is ALWAYS FIXED right after a fresh reboot.
Anyone have any thoughts on this?
*#*#4636#*#*
Phone information. Set preferred network.
Try switching between the different options.
Sent from my HTC Liberty using XDA App
Thanks for the hint thinkhope. I'll try your suggestion. May I ask what you think the problem may be?
Update: I tried it for a couple of days and I still get the same problem. I tried switching between preferred networks but the problem persists. Quick reboot and once again, fixed.
I also have this same problem, stock/custom ROM no matter which ROM the problem is still there, up to a point that made me wanna smash my phone on the ground. I tried to use my SIM card on my wife's SGS and seems like no such problems faced. Is this a common problem for HTC phones?
Ever since the new year, the clock on my HTC has been advancing too quickly. Its normally an hour at a time, although once it was 30 minutes or so. At worse, it has been around 12 hours too fast. Ocassionally it will correct itself, only to switch back later. I havent had this connected to the net via wifi or directly to my pc and I havent been roaming. I have tried a soft reboot with no luck.
Ive disabled the automatic sync for now.
Anyone heard of this problem - cant seem to find anyone experiencing this recently via forums or the net?
Thanks

You're not alone! We've got the same problem on most of our work HD2's on Orange (Same network as you effectively now Orange and T-Mo have merged networks into EE).
HD2's with Android on them aren't affected, but HD2's with stock WinMo 6.5 ROM's are.
EE have suggested installing the latest firmware (not sure on version number at the moment) from the HTC website which is a daylight savings fix, but doubt this will make much difference seeing as the UK switched to GMT months ago! I'll try installing this at some point, don't hold out much hope though so for the moment we've been disabling automatic timesync.
I suspect it's something EE have been doing with their network that has affected WinMo 6.5 on the HD2 somehow.
Same problem in DK

We have the same problem her in Denmark on HD2 and I have seen the problem reported for other HTC devices with WinMo 6.5
I am on Vodafone in the UK with a totally stock HTC 1.66 ROM, WinMo 6.5
Twice in the last 48 hours my clock has advanced by exactly 1 hour sometime during the day. Today it was around midday but I did not notice the exact time.
Glad I'm not alone on this. I thought I was going mad!
I'd forgotten about the time sync option. It was on so Ijust turned it off. Will wait and see if the problem persists tomorrow.
Thanks
Thanks for all the replies - I thought I was the only one! Looks like its a Winmo6.5 problem with handling 2013 date updates rather than a specific network? - unlikely to get a fix then I would have thought...
Things have been fine with the sync turned off for a day, so looks like its not the device itself.
Yeah, mine did not advance an hour today with time sync switched off.
Its being reported on the O2 forum too: http://community.o2.co.uk/t5/Android-Devices-Samsung-HTC-Sony/HTC-HD2/td-p/378652
One of my work colleagues has an HD2. I will check with him on Monday.
problem fixed by workaround...
So far my problem is fixed with sync turned of:
Start-Settings-Menu
all settings
Personal
phone
GSM/UMTS
select Time synchronization - get settings then untick Automatic time zone, then ok
Have been OK since friday 4/1
But as we have 2400 devices (HD2 and Touch Diamond 2 (yes - I have users reporting the same problem on WinMo 6.1 devises))
Is there an knowledge of a "central fix" from either operators or HTC?
Thanks in advance for any reply

turned off time sync, still getting issues
Hello,
we've got this problem too on the majority of our corporate HD2s. I've tried turning off the time sync but having monitored this, the devices are still changing their time. O2 are saying it's not their end doing anything.
has anybody got any further with this or is turning the time sync off for you working?
thanks

Strangely the workaround (turning off time sync) worked from saturday 5/1 and until today 9/1.
From today my 1100 corporate HD2's is advancing with 1 hour again.

Just spoken to HTC, they have assured me that the daylight saving fix on their website should fix this. I won't hold my breath as it says it's not applicable to the T-Mobile devices, which we also have the problem on
