Hi,
I was wondering if it would be possible to upgrade an XDAIIi, so it could be EDGE enabled. What do you think about it?

If it has not been manufactured with EDGE capability then no, it will not be possible.
I tought EDGE was just a software update of the GSM protocol ???
no it's ½ a generation after gsm
it's known as 2½G
where gsm is 2G and utms == 3g
I know I'm kind of hijacking the thread a bit, but I was curious about a few things...
I have the HTC Wizard/Cingular 8125 and even when I have the EDGE service indicated on the phone, it still seems a little slow. I'm using the Mr Clean ROM without any Cingular customizations... so I manually setup a GPRS connection to use. Do EDGE connections also work along the same GPRS settings? Or do I need to add some CABs from the cingular extended ROM to get the MEdia Net stuff to work at EDGE speeds?

GPRS and EDGE both use the same settings - when you say slow, just how slow is it getting? What are your average speeds?
GPRS EDGE upgrade/hack possible?
So you're saying the EDGE hi-speed GPRS capability is a hardware item in the newer phones, and no type of software/Radio-ROM hack will enable EDGE speed on my XDA IIs (PH20B) ? I just want to be sure I understand correctly.

Yes you understand correctly.
Not only that but the transmitter tower also has to have the supporting hardware.

i am not aware of this?Or is there a software to enable this ?
yes the wizard works with edge. there is a hack to enable an indicator to show if you are connected to edge or gprs, but edge should work regardless. This indicator can be enabled by using RegistryWizard as well.
Is the registry hack just for the indicator ?
As far as the specs shows Wizard only has GPRS built in,how will u enble EDGE ?Or does it automatically work on EDGE also ?
As far as I know from personal experience and This T-mobile. com page, it is edge out of the box. I find the indicator quite useful, however (it appears as a small E or G in a box on the top bar near the signal...)
I'm running the latest cingular/summiter rom and it jumps for E to G every now and then. Isn't edge available when your accessible to GPRS?
Yes the wizard is capable of edge speeds and will use it when there is that availability on the network. Not all gprs networks have edge.
Ive got a question on this. I have a wizard with T-mobile and I am in a very covered city. but my T-mobile only says connecting to GPRS... like when i try loading a page, it says connecting to t-mobile GPRS, it never says EDGE. What is up with that. how do i fix it to load up EDGE?
EDGE is nothing but Enhanced GPRS. It is always "over" GPRS. So we always see a GPRS connection being made.
Have a look at
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enhanced_Data_Rates_for_GSM_Evolution
"EDGE (also known as EGPRS) is a superset to GPRS and can function on any network with GPRS deployed on it, provided the carrier implements the necessary upgrades."
As far as the icon is considered, it will be "E" or "G" depending on if the "enhancements implemented" are working at the time or at the transmitters (towers) in the area.
So when it changes from E to G there really is a difference, not just a worthless symbol..
Also how can i test my connection speed on my wizard? I went to dslreports.com and did there wap tests and it told me 3kb/s which i highly doubt is my speed because it loads everything pretty fast.
use the HTML tests, not the WAP... They are much more accurate.
hey guys im using a jasjar with WM6 (and have tried with others) newest release and even all the WM5 releases. I have my 3G simcard from my shop now. I have configured the phone for GPRS/3G using
Add line: GPRS,3G
wap.cingular
[email protected]
CINGULAR1
Works like a charm .... for GPRS my phone wont display 3G no matter what.
I live in NJ and tried multiple areas such as elizabeth and middlesex. I have also tried manhattan and still no go. I spoke to customer service and had them re provision everything and still NO!
Then some clown says that the only phones that go on the 3G network are firmware locked versions of cingular phones.
now i have 2 universal same issues one is jasjar on is Qtek9000 and i have seen other cingular USA customers on the forums using a universal and on 3g...
whats wrong? its not even letting me see it much less connect to it all i see is "G"
ok after much findings and a lot of searches the jasjar has 2100 while cingular is using 850/1900.
will cingular every use 2100 or is some mod to the radio rom possible? prob not but...
So can anyone advise if its possible to mod the radio rom to make the jasjar support 1900 UTMS?
or is this a hardware limitation?
if same hardware i don't see why it wouldn't be possible
i mean the phone does connect to 1900 for other services in USA why couldn't you hack the radio rom?
Same problem here. I can't understand why there is not a radio hack. What a waste of a good phone.

You might already be connected and you don't know. From what I know, the WM6 can't show the 3G icon, it always show G icon even when connected to 3G.
Have you read this thread and tried V2 of the 3G Icon? THREAD: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=293375
Please let me know if it works on yours. I don't have 3G SIM, but I do have Cingular. Thanks.
You cannot simply do a "radio hack" as that would be like putting a Dodge engine in a Chevy vehicle its just not that simple. Or a square box in a circular hole.
Also I believe the main reason is due to Cing/T Mo have no ownership in the 2Ghz spectrum (Sprint does though). T Mobile will be using the 1700 area for their 3G service which is brilliant as we will not have to colliding networks around the same specturm. However this begs the question on what will happen with unlocked 3G phones in the future.

The question is since the universal has 1900 and 2100 band, is umts being pushed over the 2100 band via the os or radio rom or even a setting in the registry. Or is this a hardware setting only.

Just wanted to bump this up, in case anyone is still looking. I just got my Universal, and these settings still work for me. (December 2010)
Thanks for this bump, hope will be useful for someone
Right, this is my second tytn and i have sent first one back last summenr because of HSDPA problems. problem was that when i use 3g connection to internet was (usually) broken and couldn't load anything at all but was ok in gsm mode. I thought htc might have fixed it so bought current TYTN but hey! problem is still there. While trying to sort out i noticed that if i disasble HSDPA 3g works fine. dont forget you will stick with standart 3 g speeds.
can any one confirm?
how do i know when im getting hsdpa as i never seem to get any speeds faster than around 29k which is around 3g speeds even with a full 3g signal although i do find internet access very very flaky still...
I am still running the standard t mobile settings, i havnt chaged the proxy settings which in some cases help a lot of people
id be more inclined to say its tmobile's end that isnt working correctly, my TyTN is working fine on HSDPA with O2-UK. Have you had your account enabled for using HSDPA????

you need to call t-mobile and tell them you want to speak to technical support then tell them that you want to enable hsdpa on your line. in 30 mins you get it. but doesnt metter. if you have hsdpa in your area and your tytn enabled you might have problem without actually getting it

Well it seems so, I checked online to make sure i wasnt spouting rubbish LOL! As in my sig i achieve ATLEAST 1.1mbps when im connected to and they did announce they would be trialing HSDPA in the isle of man (which they have the fixed aswell as mobile telecomms contracts) and they rollout would be to the latter of 2006?!? Ive managed these speeds since i got my USIM (early september).
If im SERIOUSLY mistaken then i apologise but its gotta be HSDPA since the practical achievable speeds on regular UMTS are around 300kbps right?
yes you're right. you can't achive 1mbit without hspda. i have an o2 sim. will try it
Hi,
I have bought an uses hw6915 device, which works fine, except for EDGE. I´m connecting to web.vodafone.de (Germany) without any problems while in GPRS. As soon as I´m approaching an EDGE network and the [E] appears, the data transfer is stopped, server can´t be reached but the device is logged into the EDGE network.
Phone works in EDGE network as long as I´m not connected to APN.
Does anyone has a clue? Could the device defective or is it a strange configuration problem?
Is there a way to swith off EDGE in registry?

Perhaps the carrier that runs that EDGE enabled tower doesn't have a data roaming agreement with Vodafone. That would cause you to become disconnected once you hit that EDGE tower.
Just an idea, as I'm not sure how data roaming agreements work in Europe.
EDGE is just an extension to GPRS. and only between both supporting radio's (both network and client device). If you dont see the E for EDGE coverage, chances are you just aint in range of an EDGE enabled transmitter. Most countries that have 3G wont bother using EDGE, orange in the UK say that EDGE is only really used as a fall back when you are out of 3G range.
I dont know of any way to force EDGE use, and if there is Id like to hear it! GPRS sucks!
It was a technical error. HP replaced the mainboard, now it works great...
Hello everybody, is there any software who lock the Edge connection? I mean: ok for 3G or HSDPA connections, but when connection swith to EDGE, I'd like it to fall. I guess you can understand what's my problem: I have a H3G Italian flat data account, but it's free (100MB/day) only under 3G or HSDPA connection. Sometimes, while travelling, the connection automatically switch to EDGE... and I START PAYING!!! Problem is that if I'm not looking at the phone, I can't see it and I loose money for nothing... It would be better to deny EDGE connection AT ALL!!! Any Idea?
I already have GData software, very good to enable or disable the complete connection setting... anything better?

tried NoData by modaco?
maybe not yet... where can I find it?
Well, it's very easy (in my case). Go to
Start -> Settings -> Telephone (or Phone maybe) -> Band
and select
WCDMA
well, I don't know if these are the right steps for you, because I've a german ROM.
