THE CABS IN HERE A FOR O2 (IF SOMEONE CAN CHNGE THIS AND PUT THE UPLOADS IN WIKI AND REPLACE WITH LINK THAT WOULD BE GREAT)
Ok so I bought an XDa Exec.. and like most thought it was going to be great when in truth it sucked..
With the help of all those on here (far to many to mention I now have by far the fastest most stable pDA I have ever had) This got me to thinking that to have all the info and files in one place would maybe help other O2 users so here goes..
What to do..
Firstly If your device has already been running then Hard reset and perform vanilla install.
Press the two -- keys on the keyboard at the same time and reset (yes that the one to the left of the red phone button and the one to the right of the green phone button)
once set up begins go through the screen set up and the device will give you a three second warning when this appears soft reset.
when it boots up you now have vanila install. ie its running but without all the O2 crap but also without your settings.
Next you need to get certain files.
UNI_ext_rom unlocker frem here http://buzzdev.net/index.php?option=com_simpleboard&Itemid=59&func=view&catid=40&id=7869#7869
regedit (trial here) http://www.pocketgear.com/software_detail.asp?id=17108
O2 connections only cab at bottom of post
This extended Rom at bottom of post
Pocket Mechanic: Download (www.antontomov.com) and install this essential app. You have a few days on trial, and it's necessary for some steps
Ok now using active sync connect to your device and place the following in my documents (anywhere realy I just find I remember that)
*UNI_ext_rom unlocker
*regedit
*O2 connections only cab
*Pocket Mechanic
run both before resetting and also open regedit and change the following
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\StorageManager\AutoLoad\TRUEFFS_DOC1]
"Bootphase"=dword:00000002
"Order"=dword:00000001
"LoadFlags"=dword:00000001
"DriverPath"="Drivers\\BuiltIn\\TrueFFS_G31"
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\StorageManager\Profiles\TRUEFFS_DOC1]
"MountHidden"=dword:00000000
"Folder"="Extended_ROM"
"PartitionDriver"=""
"Name"=""
"DefaultFileSystem"="FATFS"
RESTART EXEC.
ONCE RESTARTED CONNECT VIA ACTIVE SYNC
you should now be able to see and edit the extended rom. delete all files then unzip the extended rom you downloaded from here and copy all the files across into the folder.
Now hard reset the device
This time allow the extended rom to install ie do not stop at the 3 seconds bit.
NOW browse to my documents and run pocket mechanic.
then run O2 connections only cab
this will then ask you to choose installation choose the bottom one and it will restart your device.
now browse to programs pocket mechanic and follow below
Notification Queue: This can be done later, but it's nice to get familiar with this process whilst your queue is small. Using PM, open the notification queue. You may already (yes!) find some duplicate (yellow icon) sddeamon entries. These seem to replicate during an ActiveSync. You can/must delete all duplicates from time to time. You will also, in future, find some "\.\\Notification.....SCRIPT..." entries. Keep an eye out for these. Most mature within minutes of you finding them, so let them expire. Many are future-dated and tightly back-to-back. These can nearly always (I've never had a regret) be deleted without repercussions. If you don't manage these, they tend to breed, and anyone with XDA experience knows what happens when your queue fills up (failed alarms etc). I'm unclear as to where these come from - undoutedly an app that is not behaving elegantly (regular registration checks etc), and if you follow the steps on this post you should NOT find any - ie the apps here do not seem to be culprits. But, keep an eye open...
Registry cleanup: Again, this can be done later, however you'll soon see the beenfit of doing it now. Using PM, run registry cleaner. You'll get around 6 entries, all of which can safely be deleted. If you did not follow step 1, you may have to examine eahc entry to see if the O2 ROM is messier. The beauty of this step is that from now on, you can safely clean everything that PM finds in the knowledge that it's a leave-behind from an app you installed, and now you can install, de-install, and provided you clean up the directories (easy) you KNOW for sure that you've completely gotten rid of the failed app. Winner!
OK now you can install all the apps you need. I have copied the cab files to the storage card that way if I ever have to hard reset I have everthing, please note I also copied the O2 connections only cab to there.
WELL I am open to comments about this and must stress you do this at your own risk but hell it worked for me and I have as I said the fastest PDA I have ever had.
so over to you guys.. PLEASE note this is in no way my own work it is all thanks to other people on here but hopefully I have put it all in one place..
all comments welcome accept the one that sais Magpies a knob
Hi many people are looking
and a few downloading comments would be good..
does it work any ideas of additions into it etc etc etc
I like it, but for a new Pocket PC user such as myself. It might be hard to follow some of your instructions. But I like the idea of putting Pocket Mechanic in the ExtROM. I was considering of doing this too, but I want to add MemMaid and HandyMenu with Pocket Mechanic.
This would be a temporary use for the ExtROM for now before Buzzzzzz releases the partition hack. Then, I would rather use the ExtROM as part of my internal memory.
I think you need to WARN PEOPLE CLEARLY THAT DELETING FILES FROM ORIGINAL EXT ROM IS NOT GOOD.
And then let them make up their own mind.
I thought about doing what you posted but tbh its too much bother.
It runs OK as it is. All I use this thing for is phone, streaming radio and anime.
In corporate with no crap OEM stuff I havent tested and normal o2 ext rom it works fine.
I wanna say thanks, had some spare time todaylooking after the sick missus and carried out the procedure, dont know if its running much better than my corp install before but it was good fun and easy to follow
Hello
I have just purchased a new XDA Mini S - to replace my dying XDA II (which was giving me electrical shocks and starting to lose data).
Ash (an extremely knowledgeable and helpful O2 shop assistant in Uxbridge) directed me to this site so I could get the details required to to set-up and run my new PDA in Corporate mode.
After set-up was completed, I synchronised the Mini with my work computer (via Activesynch 4.1) - allowing me to download my calender, task and contact items.
And that's it so far!! ...no other memory-intensive applications installed, ...no massive ringtone files, ...nothing!!
However, the unit is running very slow in comparison to my old XDA II. When I am working in the Calender application and go forward several weeks, followed by selecting the 'return to today' icon, it takes about 10 seconds to react. Similar behaviour exists in 'Tasks', when returning to the 'Today screen', and when using the menus - so, basically, all of the time. My previous unit reacted instantly - and that was fully loaded with software.
What can I do? I love the new Mini and the upgraded spec it offers - but is is unworkable - as described above.
If I invested in a mini-SD card could I utilise the additional space as program memory rather than storage?
Hopefully somebody can help. I am reasonably I.T. savvy - but only as a user and not much experience at progrommer / developer level - so basic intructions my be needed!!
Thanks in advance
Gary
I think my previous message was too long...
Basically, how can i speed up my XDA Mini S which is already running in Corporate Mode?
Thanks
Gary
Soft-reset once a day? My Vario runs acceptably quickly after a soft-reset, but slows down over time.
Hi Zathras
Thanks for the tip...
...but I have been 'soft-resetting' several times per day - and it doesn't seem to help.
I do have several years of appointments in my diary. Would reducing this to only 2 weeks of history help?
Thanks
Gary
Hi Gary,
I had a Magician before and also feel the 02 mini s (Wizard) is way slower.
I have read elsewhere that the Wizard has a silly anti-virus program that always runs in memory and will chew up memory.
The boards indicate that to use a different extended rom. The only problem is I cannot get a view on which portions of the o2 Rom should be deleted and which should be kept.
Let me know if you find a way.
Thanks
Adrian
I have noticed a few times after running active snc on my mini s it slows right down till i soft reset.
could it be the same problem?
Hi Adrian
Thanks for your help...
I'm not a programmer / developer - so wouldn't know where to start with ROM edits, etc...
Knowing my luck I would probably do something unrecoverable!!
Is there an easy way to do this? Is it done in the Wizard directly - or via the PC?
...and is it a file that's viewable in explorer?
Excuse my basic approach to all of this. Maybe there is a tutorial somewhere on the boards...
Thanks
Gary
does it slow down after active sync has run ?
Goto to settings memory and make sure all your programs are shut down especially activesync as this seems to slow it down more than anything. Also download check notifications and remove any entries in red that have probably appeared especially if you have been soft resetting several times per day.
You really should see a speed increase if you complete the above. Activesync really does slow your wizard down and more than a few duplicate entries found and removed with check notifications will really help.
See if that helps.
It seems to be the same before and after activesynch!!!
I closed down all running programs and the Calendar is still dead slow...
How do you 'download check notications'?
Thanks again
Gary

Thanks for your help
Do I need to install both 'Check Notifications' and 'Notification Clearfix'.
I am correct in presuming that 'Notification Clearfix' prevents future duplications whereas 'Check Notifications' lets you see all events, whether or not thet are offending?
Gary
try tweaks 2k2 there are some reg hack that help with peformance
I've installed the one that runs at startup, but it only helps clean up the list at startup - not after startup; so if you add alarms/etc., the list can get mucky again. So I've also got it under an icon to run from time to time Need to find a nice scheduling application that can run other applications - just have it run every 8 hours or so
Try some other apps apart from your calendar, it could be that there is just too much info in there. You may just find its not as speedy as your last device, but thats just the way it is. Its a trade off and maybe if the speed is a big issue the wizard isnt for you.
I heard a lot of people saying the wizard is slow before I bought one, but I found its speed fine for what I expect from the device. I find my uni much quicker, but again its that trade off, my uni is much bigger.
The wizard needs to be loved for what it is not for what you want it to be.
I'm trying to love it - believe me !!!
...it is only the speed of the calendar searches that really annoys me - I can cope with the sluggish moments.
And I have just discovered something... when you cross one month to the next, the calendar freezes
If someone can do the following for me - it will verify whether it is specifically my unit that is at fault.
Open Calendar, switch to 'Agenda View', and then, using the directional keypad, arrow right until you cross over one month - say January to February. Does the calendar stop working?
When it rcovers, hit the 'go to today' icon. What happens?
I think there is a bug!!
Gary
Got the mini s ab out a month ago from O2 shop. I just did a hard reset and didn't install any of the O2 crap. Is running quite fast and everything just seems fine. I have tried what you said on the calendar. I don't have any problem. The calendar program just keep running without stopping or anything. After I close the calendar, I pressed on the 'Today' button and everything seems fine.
Thanks for trying for me - I appreciate it...
I just need to find a solution that works for me.
I already have the most basic install possible - corporate mode - so wonder if there are any more avenues to go down...
Cheers for now
Gary

Just tried this on my Charmer in case it was a WM5 bug and I can't replicate it - all works fine.
Try doing a hard reset, and then just when the little box comes up saying something like 'customising in 3 seconds' quickly press the soft-reset button.
Voila! - basic WM5 with no more o2 crap installed! You'll have to set up the gprs and mms yourself, but if you phone cust. sevices then they can e-mail you the instructions...
It should run faster than before.
Apologies if this has been posted before but cant find it in the search...
1) On soft reset, I loose sms messages, even if I have closed "Text Messages" with any of the 3rd party "close" button programs.
2) On soft reset, I lose BT338 GPS connectivity, have to remove the device and port then re add - have read on here that you need to uncheck secure connection, I've tried it with both checked, and unchecked and still fails
3) On soft reset, whatever background image I have dissapears, but a portion is left behind in the drop down window.
4) Im with Orange, which of the cabs in the Extended ROM can I delete and still be able to use the phone.
5) When using Sprite Backup It does not back up either calendar or contacts, even though I have Personal Databases checked (or if it does, it doesnt restore them)
I dont want a load of Orange bloatware using up the memory, just enough for phone, gprs connection and WiFi to work.
Getting quite used to doing hard resets now, had issue over the weekend with one app causing Picture viewer to lock up!
Many thanks from a grateful Newbie!

Once you have flashed your phone and done the reset afterwards, letting the customisations install they are no longer of any use to you until you do a hard reset, at which point the ROM will reload and the customisations with it.
If you use backup software after you delete the entire contents of your ExtendedROM you won't lose a thing.
Have you got the right version of Sprite? I think the latest is 5.1?
If you have no luck with it, give SPB a try. I've used it on my Alpine and Uni with great success.
Have you tried flashing with the latest ROM for the other problems? I'm on the latest Orange ROM and so far things seem to be working fine with SMS, desktop and BT pairing.
Thanks,
Sprite is 5.1.0 Build 1417 - downloaded last friday
ROM version seem to be same as yours, 1.30.90WWE 02/24/06 so I guess thats most upto date Orange ROM (had device just under 3 weeks)
Grr @ self for not reading sig !
Another thing to try is the Qtek ROMs? Assuming you're unlocked of course.
Good Luck with it =)
Im not brave enough to unlock it
I absolutley adore the beast, and its spot on for what i need, just wish I could resolve the minor issues that whilst not spoil the use of it, nevertheless are annoying. BT338 gets hot fix in seconds, but takes me 5 mins to un pair then reapir the blasted BT connection
Going back to the extended ROM, what I meant was do I need all the cab files that are in there to use the phone, as in can I remove some, then Hard reset and have a smaller number actually load up.
I dont use the Orange today screen for one, and given that there is only 25Mb of usable program memory out of 50, I'm wondering how much of that is caused by TSR orange code that can be removed at build
EDIT: had a look at http://forum.xda-developers.com/vie...0&postorder=asc&highlight=reg+tweaks&start=25 but still non the wiser (someone listed the Orange FR cabs)
There is an easy way to do this that doesn't require unlocking the ExtROM, which you have to do to be able to delete anything in there.
When you hard reset, tap the screen, sync the touchscreen, cut and paste, then Windows loads up.
Right after that it will give you 3 seconds before loading the contents of the ExtROM. If you hit the reset pin during that three seconds it won't load anything in there.
You can then browse to it with a decent file manager and install the .CABs by hand.
But, don't be afraid of unlocking, it takes one program and two registry edits. Gives you 10MB of space to play with too.
Ah, my fault, read som much about unlocking that I thought you meant the sim card.
Yip, I've run the ExtRom unlocker and found out how to look inside
Not really that bothered about storage on the device, more about having a nice trim OS so that i have more program space as the kernel is smaller
Thanks again
hi there, as this is my first post and i'm definitely a relative n00b here, please go easy on me.
right, the problem:-
i have a Vario2 on the UK T mobile network and althought it's my first PDA i have to say i love it.the only problem i've had is when i tried to install TomTom.
before this handset i had a Nokia 6680 on which i installed Tomtom 5, so when i got my Vario i thought i'd install the same software ( my Tomtom disk has both the symbian and smartfhone versions on).
the install didn't work so i simply deleted it and forgot about it.
at a later date i got hold of Tomtom 6 and tried to install it but one of the files will not execute so there's definitely something up with my device as i've installed the same software on two other Vario2's without a hitch.
i may be wrong here, and i probably am, but i'm of the opinion that when i removed Tomtom 5 i didn't fully get all the files out and therefore when i try to install Tomtom 6 it detects the presence of some version 5 files and aborts.
if i'm right can anyone tell me how to rectify this and if i'm not can you guys tell me where i'm going wrong.
thanks in advance, i'v been viewing these forums for a while but only just registered today.
this seems like a very friendly and imformative community.
I may be completely wrong here but I think the root casue of your problems is that you first tried to intsall TomTom Mobile (Smartphone version) on the Vario II. The Vario II is a full Windows Mobile Phone Edition (rather than Windows Mobile Smartphone) and therefore requires TomTom Navigator which I'm guessing your TomTom 6 is.
I presume you have double checked the "remove programs" bit in the Vario II settings folder for any TomTom software.
You don't mention where the install is failing - PC side or Vairo side. If it is PC side you may beable to obtain the CAB files from the TomTom disc or the Temp install folder and copy them manually to the Vario Storage Card and then try running the CABs directly on the Vario.
Failing all that I am sure a full Hard Reset on the device to wipe it back to "new" will work but that will mean reinstalling everything else too.

i agree, i definitely think the problem lies with me trying to install the wrong version of Tomtom 5 first.

yes, the remove programs box is now empty i.e. i don't have anything else installed at the moment.

no pc involved in the install process my friend.
i copied the files to the memory card and executed them from there.
i know it's not a software problem as i have installed the exact same software on two other vario's

sorry to go all n00b again but can you tell me EXACTLY what a hard reset does?
does it put the device back to the way it left the factory? will it even erase calender entries and delete any notes etc?
thanks for taking the time to reply.
Hi Dark Side, yes a hard reset will restore your phone to its out of the box state ... anything you have added like appointments etc.. will be wiped.
If you are going to do a hard reset you might want to install a backup program first ( SPB Backup <click here> is a good one) and do a custom backup where you just backup the calendar/tasks and emails/sms etc.. that way you can just restore these after the reset.
Good luck.
If there is no PC invovled and you are using the *.cab files directly then my guess is the old TomTom left some files about and perhaps some registry junk. You can can search for them but it will be time consuming.
I think a hard reset will be the quickest way to fix it but it will take your Vario II back to the state it was when you took it out of the box first time - no programs, no calendar, no notes etc.
Check out the wiki for how to do a hard rest.
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Hermes_For_Beginners
You can restore all your data after the Hard Rest if before you do it you make sure you take a backup using a backup tool like SpriteBackup. If you don't have backup software fully sync your Vario II and then take a copy of the Sync Files folder on the PC probably named "My Documents on [ppc name]" in your PC's "My Documents" folder.
N.B. I'd reinstall all software rather than restoring it and do that before restoring your data (or copying the files back from the copy of the original "my documents on [ppc name]") That way you'll make sure there is no risk of data being over written.
thanks for the help.
i'll either report back with the results, or i'll make sure you all get invitations to my funeral after i've banged my head off the wall for the millionth time, lol.

UPDATE.
looks like my suspicions were right and there was a few remnants of a previous installation attempt lurking somwhere in my device.
a quick hard reset and i now have Tomtom working perfectly.
well, there's just one glitch...everytime i run it i have to approve the connection to my gps receiver and also enter it's passcode.
can't find the tickbox to prevent this anywhere. grr.
thanks for everyone that replied.

Just a thought, the passkey request might be because you have the "Passkey required" box ticked in the bluetooth settings (settings>connections>bluetooth>security) ... might be worth a look to see if the box is checked and if yes, uncheck it to see if that stops it asking.

comms manager>settings>bluetooth settings>security shows a box with authentication (passkey) required...this box is not checked.
now, after asking me for the passkey all day ( i've turned it on+off about ten times) it has suddenly stopped asking me and simply started up the app.
hmm.
i use a BT-77 by the way and i used this same receiver with my previous nokia 6680 for over a year without it ever asking for authentication.

i'm connected on COM4..but here's a new twist.
within the last hour the BT receiver has disappeared from the devices section of the bluetooth settings area of the comms manager.
now all day (i only got this working last night) the bt receiver was in the devices folder, but with a question mark next to it whereas now just my earpiece is listed in there.
weird.!
I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this anomoly. Sometimes my unit seems to run extremely slow...like several processes are running in the background and hogging all the resources. I make sure that all "Running Programs" are closed and it is not during a "checking email" cycle, my internet history and cookies are cleared too. Sometimes I can click on something and wait up to 20 seconds before the "wheel" stops rotating and it completes the requested task. When this happens, it is 2-3 times slower than my HTC Touch.
Then, there are other times when everything seems to be running fine. Everything is quick and responsive with no noticable delays.
Background: My unit is the European X7500 version with WinMo 6 installed by the "selling store". The only additional programs I have installed are AvantGo, Google Maps, SPB GRPS Monitor, Skype, Sprite Backup and Vito Audio Notes. All were "clean installs" with no error messages and if memory serves correctly, I was noticing symptoms of these issues prior to installing most of these programs. I currently have 81.60 MB storage memory available and 76.90 MB program memory available.
ROM Version: 2.21.405.2
ROM Date: 07/20/07
Radio Version: 1.50.00.00
Protocol Version: 32.83.7020.20H
ExtROM Version: 2.21.405.101
It seems that there is something at work here but I can't seem to put my finger on what is causing it. Is it possible the the installation of WinMo 6 has something to do with this problem?
Although I am a long-time Windows PDA user, I have no experience at upgrading OS's, ROM's or hacking the registry entries (or even reading them for that matter). Any assistance in isolating the cause of this frustrating problem would be greatly appreciated.
Download latest rom!
Hey thats cool, I also have an HTC Advantage and an HTC Touch!
Anyway, I would recommend that you download and install the latest WM6 rom from the HTC e-club site, then install all your programs on the Micro drive. You can also try defragmenting the drive using Pocket Mechanic or similar utillity!
Good luck!
Thanks for the tip branko but from what I understand, I already have the most up-to-date version of WM6 (listed in OP). Also, I do not have a lot of programs installed (6) and half of these are installed on the MD. Defrag doesn't make sense as it is only a couple of months old with very little added and nothing removed.
That's why I am leaning towards something that may not have gone completely "tickety boo" during the installation of WM6. I am just trying to figure out if anyone else has experienced this problem after upgrading before I try a complete re-install of the OS. I was hoping that there is some way to be able to look for whatever is causing this slowdown. Kind of like using Task Manager in XP to see what processes, if any, are running in the background.
GPRS monitor has been known to cause slowness. Try Hard reset and not install GPRS monitor and see if that helps. When I got my X7500, it had GPRS monitor on the CD and I installed it and I had the same issues. Uninstalling the GPRS did not help, I had to Hard reset and then load my apps and not load the GPRS monitor.
I know is sucks to hard reset and have to reload your apps, but since you only have a few, it is worth a try.
Good luck
Thanks eagle 1. That's exactly the kind of info I was looking for. Too bad if that is the problem because I kind of like the GPRS Monitor. And the funny thing is, I am also running GPRS Monitor on my HTC Touch without problems and 1/3 the processor speed.
I just checked the versions and my Advantage has 2.4.5 build 923 (from original CD) and my Touch has 2.5.1 build 225 (download purchase). So, I wonder if the older version has issues with WM6 and the newer version has fixed those issues.
Well, there is only one way to find out for sure. I will try a hard reset tomorrow when I get some time (too tired tonight) and report back. If I find that this has corrected the issue, I may try loading the newer version and see what happens.
Thanks again.

eagle1,
You've just posted the tip of the day! I've always noticed that my taskbar icon took a long time to change from 3G to H, but never occurred to me that the GPRS monitor was the culprit. After uninstalling it,I already noticed a marked reduction in time taken to change from 3G to H, and my web browsing speed has improved! I'm going to try a hard reset when I got some free time later and see if it improves even further.
Just a question before I "pull the pin" and do a hard reset. I noticed that in the Remove Programs listing it shows Microsoft Office Mobile. A hard reset will not uninstall this, will it?
Also, under the Programs directory, Adobe Reader LE and Windows Live will also survive a hard reset, correct?
Thanks.
anything is the remove programs folder will get deleted but dont worry everything you need including Office is just a link away. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=364366
Ok, I just noticed that MS Office Mobile is actually on one of the CD's that came with the unit. I wondered why it was showing up in the Remove Programs folder. I received my device with WM6 already installed from the dealer so I didn't realize that it's not pre-installed in WM6.
Also, another question regarding the hard reset. I synchronize with Outlook on my laptop and my contact database has about 1,600 contacts. After a hard reset, would it be better to delete my existing ActiveSync partnership and create a new one. Or, would connecting to my existing partnership after a hard reset cause any problems.
I am assuming that because my current partnership was originally set up to sync both ways, that once connected after a hard reset, it will realize there are no contacts on the device and automatically transfer them over from my laptop. Is there anything I am missing.
And one last thought based on eagle 1's tip regarding GPRS Monitor not playing nice, has anyone else come across any other programs that cause problems and I should stay away from? That includes the Sprite Backup Tool included on the disc.
Is there a problem with sprite backup? I don't notice any yet.
Sorry, I should have clarified. I don't know if there is a problem with Sprite. I am just asking if anyone else has found it causes any trouble.
My reasons for asking are that I have just done a hard reset and so far I have not loaded any programs. Once I sync my Outlook contacts back, I will think about re-installing individual programs. But this time, I will do it one-by-one.

Oh yes, you should reinstall all your program one by one. If not, you'll simply bring back whatever that caused the slow down.
