*The noob questions thread* - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario General

The more i play with my MDA Vario, the more i get used to it, but the more i realise i'm a complete noob. I have been playing with/building/programing computers for years, but heldhelds are totally new to me.
I have had a look around, and this place seems to be where the pro's hang out. So could you kind people excuse my noobishness and answer some of my painfully noob questions?
I will start with...
1) Why don't programs actually seem to close when i 'close' them. Such as when i close Opera, yet it pops up again and again. I understand i can go into setting>system>memory and close running programs, but thats a pain to do all the time. So what the deal here?
2) At the top of my Today screen i have 5 larger icons accross the top which i would like to edit/remove/add new etc. I can go into settings>today>items and [un]check stuff that runs down the screen, but i cab't add new ones and can't see any options for the 5 larger icons at the top. Without instaling some kind of plugin, how can i change this?
EDIT: Ok, i see that 5 icons are part of something called just 'T-Mobile'. Any ides's how to change it and removing the pointless internet link thats that same os the hard button at the top of the MDA?
3) Is there an easy way to switch between running progams (like ALT+TAB in WinXP)?

To answer question 1 and 3:
Windows Mobile only minimizes programs by default. You can only close them, using the memory settings.
There are several Task-Manager and/or Close-Applications to override this "problem".
Some examples:
SPBPlus (www.spbsoftwarehouse.com)
Wisbar (http://www.lakeridgesoftware.com)
SmallMenu (http://tillanosoft.com)
tMan (http://pda.jasnapaka.com)
vbar (http://vieka.com)
MagicButton (http://www.trancreative.com)
...
..
.

Just slap in a new rom or the customized T-Mo rom that's in the forums...
What do you want all the bloat that T-Mo (and all the carriers) put in?

WA3 beta New & Improved?....Ohh Yes indeed!!

http://www.lakeridgesoftware.com/forum/showthread.php?t=11258
I'm going to hold of on this until it comes out of beta.. I've spent far too long getting the U1000 tweaked and working perfectly with the right combination of settings and software.
That thread has already achieved 12 pages of replies to the launch, so I figure its going through some teething issues already.
Cheers for the update though - a lot of those new features look extremely tempting!
WA3 beta kicks ass..
I am pleased to say, so far, WA3 beta is a vast leap forward from WA2 in terms of features and functionality. I'm loving it, but there seems to be no option for using anything but the default theme at this moment (correct me if I'm wrong peeps).
I'm loving the option to have shortcuts in the TrayApps.
WA3 is brill even in beta...
I'm very pleased to report that despite the many problems reported on the Lakeridge forums about this beta on various devices, it works perfectly on my Ameo.
I love the feature set on this new version and will definately be investing in this once the official release has made it out the door.
I forgot to take a screen shot of it without soft keys enabled (giving one even more screen real estate - if that's what you like).
But here are a few pics that I did take...and Yes you can use your old favourite WA2 Themes or WA3 Themes if you have any.
Final Word: No problems encountered as yet. Brill. I highly recommend checking this out, as it is way better than WA2.
Note: Be sure to completely uninstall WA2 first and save your Themes folder to somewhere else first (you will be able to install these from wherever you drop them later through WA3 i.e. Start/Settings/Personal/Theme Manager).
Drop us a line if you get stuck.

Haven't noticed a drop in memory usage. It seems snappier than before. Reports from the Lakeridge website are that the memory usage is considerably lower than WA2.
I've also got this up and running with no probs at all on my wife's Universal (T-Mobile MDA Pro) with no ill effects to speak of.
I did delve a bit deeper into memory usage over here: http://www.4winmobile.com/viewtopic.php?p=62542#62542
Wow, that's impressive news. I might totally back up my U1000 tonight and take a leap of faith. But I'm still skeptical. Really looking forward to official release though!
Now that I think about it, I guess I should anyway - as to provide feedback on any bugs!

Hi Mackaby007,
Beautiful pictures you have there. I have been trying this out for a while, but wonder where does your skin come from? It's FANTASTIC looking.
Also, when you press the PROCESS button in the battry pop up, do you get to see the running processes? Mine has nothing there.
Have you tried adding in more applications than one could be accomodated in just one line in the system tray? What happens if you try to have ALL launcheable applications there and run out of space? With applications like SPB pocket plus, you siimply add more tabs. But how about this one? You know what I'm thinking? If it allows all to be launched there, I might just dump my SPB pocket plus and use this to replace it as well as Magic Button.
I much prefer to keep all my applications alive when I press close button. There is really no reason to shut them down, because so doing means than when you need it again, you got to reload from scratch. Imaging reloading Opera Mobile..... It takes forever. So, the way I use me device to to keep ALL frequently used applications alive regardless of whether I press the close button with or without holding it down (I do not want to accidentially close it by holding down too long). If I really want to close it down, currently magic button let me do it be pressing and holding down on the running icon on task bar. I find that with WA3, the process of making an application stay alive when close button is pressed is far too tedious. You need to go to setting>Task>executable, and select the excecutable individually (WA3 works very slowly here unfortunately). Also, choosing to keep it alive still does not prevent me from accidentally closing it when close button is pressed too long. In this regards, I feel that Magic Button's design is far better.
Do you know of a way to suppress the task title all together? My view is that the icon of running task should just be "lighted up" to show it is the current application. Also, we know what application it is anyway by looking at what is staring at you. Why waste the precious real estate on task title?
I like the new ROTATE screen icon, and the ability to show date and time occupyping only one icon space. This is something where magic button should incorporate.
Oh, initially I though that the phone icon will let you click and directly let you use the phone but this is not so. Do yo know of a way to put a real phone task icon on the task bar, so that clicking that icon on the TB will give you access to phone application immediately? The trouble i have is that when phone application is launched, WA5 does not seem to show it on the TB (unlike magic button). I like magic button more in this regard.
Are you using QVGA when you took those screen shots? How does it look in VGA? Would the system tray buttons are far too small? Do you think that if we use VGA and WA3 we could get away from having to use another application such as SPB pocket plus?
One last thing, I could be wrong about this. But I got a distinct feeling that my response time is slower using this rather than Magic Button.
That's a long post, but I'm very interested in your view in the above.
I still cant figure out how to use WAD .. lol... argh! Im st0opit.
Anyone wanna help me out with it? lol.

Hi eaglesteve.
Thanks for the compliment. I do like nice screens and preferably unclutterred. Anyway....the WA2 skin can be purchased through Nacashco Designs here: http://www.nascasho.com/Skins-Sub-InD_05.html
and the background image I found trolling around on the deviant art website under; 3 Dimensional. (see attachment)
Q & A (I'll do my best)
Q1. Also, when you press the PROCESS button in the battry pop up, do you get to see the running processes? Mine has nothing there.
A.1 Yes I see all the running processes and am able to stop any one of them.
Q2. Have you tried adding in more applications than one could be accomodated in just one line in the system tray?
A2. Yes, but it won't display any more than 15 icons from my experience. No point in addind any more as you cannot scroll through them (in the hope that you will see the other shortcuts you added previously). That's a good point to take up with Chris at Lakeridge, as he mat be willing to incorporate this into WA3 as it's still in beta.
Q3. Do you know of a way to suppress the task title all together? My view is that the icon of running task should just be "lighted up" to show it is the current application.
A3. Yes mine is currently set up this way too. I only want to see an icon of running apps.** I think under the 'Buttons' menu you have to go to 'Assignments' and ensure that 'Title' is NOT checked.
Q4. Do yo know of a way to put a real phone task icon on the task bar?
A4. I've added the phone app to the System tray (no need for keyboard anymore ). It's called 'Phone.lnk', but should be a visible icon when you go to choose it.
Q5. Are you using QVGA when you took those screen shots? How does it look in VGA? Would the system tray buttons are far too small? Do you think that if we use VGA and WA3 we could get away from having to use another application such as SPB pocket plus?
A5. I suppose you would call it QVGA (default mode). I tried TrueVGA and whilst it looks great, I don't like that I can hardly see anything. Got good eyesight at the mo and don't want to start straining. 2nd half of your question...Yes I think it's definitely possible, as you'd theoretically fit many more icons in the Tray applet/System Tray. Good thinking Batman! I might have to reconsider TrueVGA just for that!
Q6. But I got a distinct feeling that my response time is slower using this rather than Magic Button.
A6. I've used Magic button in the past and was very pleased with it, but stopped using it once I found that you can close apps properly through WA2. Unlike yourself, I like things properly shut down unless I'm going back to it soon, hence the nice running tasks icons.
Ok that should be about it. I hope I answered most if not all of your questions.
mackaby007 that's a great scren. So let me get this right , i buy the theme and get the backround and then i import it to wa3?
Also how do you replace / remove the default tray icons that come with t-mobile, i used the tray display program but that just removes all tray items. I just want to add the programs that i use
Would SPB diary work with this theme? as i have mine on today screen.
thanks

Hi bashi007. Yes to the first 3 questions. I can't comment on Spb Diary as I've never used it, but I can't see why it should pose a problem.
If you have an Ameo from T-Mobile;
........regarding the system tray...there is a thread already on it...let me go see................
.....aha here it is:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=307086
Go to.....Hkey_Local_Machine\SOFTWARE\HTC\TrayApplet with a reg editor and delete all the little folders that contain the links for the existing shortcuts (free up some space). Be sure to have the system tray visible again first though, so you can see the changes you have made. If you don't see it, uninstall the Tray applet switching application and reboot.
If you own an X7500/Advantage read this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=308250 Once you've gotten rid of all your system appointed icons, follow on to the skinning app.
Now try WA3 system tray.
Let us know if you run into probs.
Thanks mackaby007 for your reply, i have a slight problem in that i delete the folders in the tray applet, but it still leaves the icon in the tray.

hi bashi007 what variant of the AThena do you have? If you have the Advantage, you'll have to delete the folders in the HTC Homeplug folder instead or aswell. Then soft reset your device and they should no longer be visible in the system tray.
Thanks for the help, i have Ameo, after soft resetting all seems to work. Great!
i presume i buy the VGA theme from Nacashco Designs.

Hi olegzz.
I can see by your joining date that you are new to this forum, so I will be patient with.
It is generally good practice to read through a thread before asking questions that may have already been asked and or answered.
In this instance no one has asked, but there are only 2 pages to this thread and one glance at the first page would have fully revealed what you asked.
to answer your question nonetheless, it is merely a skin made for Wisbar Advance 2 and is one of hundreds of interchangeable skins. Some of us just happen to like this one.
If you know about these things already I apoligise for my tone. If however you don't, then this might be of real interest to you as it completely changes the look and feel of your WM device.
The screenshots on page 1 of this thread are just 1 example of this. Best to head on over to Lakeridge software (website) to get a clearer picture.
Good luck.

getting this phone, where to start...

hi,
i am getting this phone in a few weeks on vodafone(uk).
i have looked in a few threads but i was getting a bit lost so,
when getting this phone from new what would you do with it...
what would you change in the settings...
what programs would you remove...
what programs would you add...
any help would be great thanks.
Hi Markyc101, welcome to the forum/X1 Owners' club!
I too was a bit lost in the beginning, and didn't know where to start because of the large amount of detailed info.
Before you start doing anything really, you should read about the WinMo OS, and what a ROM is (and what it means to load a different one). Even though this is already pretty advanced, it's the most core aspect of the device and therefor I found it a logical place to begin. This info, and other basics, can be found in the Wiki (a sticky thread if I'm not mistaking).
Moving on, the further changes (as I see it) fork into two categories: appearance & functionality.
Appearance can be tweaked with SKtools (really hardcore, i.e. setting the width of scroll bars in pixels) and other tools that modify the registry. There are also some more gentle options, like skins etc.
Functionality can be added by numerous programs, it's really so diverse it's easier to start at the goal than the source. With this I mean there are too many programs to list, specify what you want to do (i.e. navigate, use phone as flashlight, play sweet video's, etc) then people can be of help.
Don't ask us what WE would add/remove, as this doesn't neccessarily apply to you. Furthermore, tip for your next forum post: the more specific, the more answers you'll get!
Good luck, post back when you know better what you want.
I think these threads will help you a little.. Im also first time using this kind of phone (Windows Mobile).. Hang out over here a little and you'll naturally know more
XPERIA X1 LIBRARY: All available ROMS RADIOS FLASHING TOOLS TUTORIALS APPS

what programs would you remove... NONE I guess
what programs would you add...

Resco File explorer (useful)
Resco Photo viewer

Congrats! I just ordered mine today, to replace my Fuze.
thanks dancemacabre that was what i was after,
some of those programs look really good i will have to check them out.
if anybody else has any good programs i should check out please let me know.
i am not very techy but i would like some flashy new things on my phone.
thanks,
I'm planning to buy this phone too This thread is quite interesting
But when I see the Official ROMs thread for Xperia X1, all I see are codes (names) of the roms :-s
But is there a releaselog with the updates? So I can check the improvements/updates with the ROMs.
Probably one of the first I would install is Advanced Config... for me way more functionality than Xperia Tweak... its a must have...
TBH the more you play with your phone and figure out what you want to do with it then do a search based on those goals the more personalised and indespensible it will become...
This is a great phone, bet u will like it replying with my x1 with wifi now..
Imo, TouchFlo3D is good n flashy but its laggy.. and i prefer the default panel as its clean n easy to see
If you really wan a taste of TouchFlo, u can go over the ROM sub-forum and look for itje 's Touch-It v4.5. There're step by step tutorial provided for the installation. Remember to back up always
N a little tips, put your mp3 for ringtones in My Documents in storage card. X1 can detect the folder and u wont need to put ur mp3 in the phone itself!
That's all! Have a nice day
exactly the thread i was looking 4!

WM 6.5 - It's a joke!

It does not come with the latest .NET!
The "honeycomb" start menu is a display of idiocy gone rampant
No apparent way of altering icon-size
send to top - send down only options for arranging icons
send down only sends to where icon used to be
send to top sends ALL the way - an item in a folder is not sent to top of folder but to the very top!
Too big icons, with any "not small" amount of apps, prepare for thumb-sore, coz you'll be spending a LOT of time scrolling to get to something at the bottom
Titanium - it's ugly, and when you go to Today->Elements, it has no configuration options, honestly I couldn't be bothered to check it out further.
HTC aren't too bright either....
Thank God for
wkTask (which btw causes the honey-comb to stop working after some time - who cares?)
iPhonetoday - here's the deal: Apple has a good UI idea - steal it! But noooo we need to do our own stuff - HTC Sense (is there any) - Titanium (I had one look at it - it is ugly)
HD Tweak - fixing the poo
TouchPal - now THAT's how you go about making a keyboard , HTC I'm looking at you, MS you're not even in the class!
Opera, a decent browser YAH, too bad that HTC bungles it by integrating it an idiotic way.
OPERA default reg - one man hero fixes BigCorps poo
this list needs to be longer, I am just too tired from spending a whole day upgrading and the subsequent puking and the ongoing "get stuff back to sanity" procedure
Amazing that one-man armies like the guys who did most of this stuff, individually are brighter, smarter and more clever than the combined MS collective or the drones at HTC

Go somewhere else to troll.
then stick with 6.1
I'm not trolling - and if you think it is trolling, why do you repeat the whole shebang?
And no I wont stick with 6.1, why should i? I never said 6.1 was better than 6.5. In fact I think that 6.1 is crappier than 6.5.
IT JUST SO HAPPENS that I am the owner of a Topaz, I had to go windows mobile due to Exchange at work.
Gotta say this though - Battery-life with 6.5 is amazing COMPARED to 6.1. It's right up there where it is supposed to be.

Yes. He's right and not trolling. I'm disappointed with thw new official rom too and after a day i flashed a cooked rom.
There is NOTHING wrong with the official ROM, stop whine so f-ing much will you.

I am using the stock Rom Danish ROM.
About the battery life, I am not so sure that I was right. I watched today as percentages just dropped away....
It just seemed to go on and on yesterday....

titanium
to be honest i think i am the only person here who actually likes the windows default one lol
i cant get the weather app to work on it though, so i need to play around
and i have found that 6.5 is faster than 6.1 by a good 10% if not more, also my battery life easily lasts a day, where as before it would make it just to the end of my working day rather than my whole day
but yeah the honey comb, move to very top is a bit smegged, as i would prefere to place things where i wanted them,

My battery life certainly feels much better. I've been messing about with WM 6.5 for about an hour. In the past, my battery would have taken a hammering. So far, it's at 80%!! That's *way* better.
I like it - it's so much more responsive. Okay, so it's not a radical change and there are still far too many "non-touch-screened" applications in there that means you still need to get the stylus out.
But for nothing, I'm happy - so far!
Cheers, Rob.

Please give us your feedback
What I really meant is this:
The user interface in WM is OOOOOOOLD - anyone who has seen an iPhone or and Android phone knows this.
MS knows this
HTC knows this (and have jumped the Android Bandwaggon)
WM 6.5 is a joke, because it tries to convey the idea that WM is ALSO about new intuitive fingerfriendly interfaces - and what does it have to show for it? Well 'honeycomb' which might be a nice idea, only it's implemented so stupidly that it is a joke.
Titanium also - is a joke. Eyecandy with no real benefit in my opinion. And btw. it's no candy to my eyes - more like cabbage
Now some may like HTC Tou... ooops its HTC Sense now - and it is better in my opinion than titanium, but it's just not good enough.
Actually my boss explained it to me this way:
Acebone, you see the diamond2 as a computer that can also make calls, but most people see it as a phone that can also do documents and calendar
He might be right, I just don't think that WM6.5 or Sense is good enough, that's why I spend ours installing and configuring wkTask, iPhone Today, TouchPad (commercial) etc...
With these often FREE and often ONE-MAN produced tools, I am able to put together a user-interface that is
Easier to navigate
Requires fewer clicks
Takes up less memory
Reacts more quickly with less errors
the thing here is yeah its not finger freindly as android of iphone, however it has a huge range of apps behind it which have been working for ages and will still work on for a while yet, the os is old however it is that great to adapt, there are that many different type of ui that can be installed over the top, to make it suitable for people that want things their own way, android, is great, however after using it more any lenght of time, it becomes a bore, its only really a gimick rather than a work phone, which is what windows has always been aimed at,
iphone, and android are only half a phone, and expect users to buy the features that they want the phone to do, where as with windows you get a working phone, from the time, you turn it on
WM 6.5 doesn't work with old software?
Unless I have some odd problem, my Touch Diamond 2 on which i just reflashed ROM with WM 6.5 is not recognizing the entire screen in some software. It seems like the ssoftware screen goes below the bottom of the physical screen.
Also, the TouchFlo appears to be inhibiting the touch features of screen in expand/contract +/- menus.
- Email when you choose folder the expand/contract +/- menus don't respond with one press, but require a sustained hold before they expand/contract.
Some software is is not happy in WM 6.5:
- PHM RegEdit is not happy in WM 6.5 I have to hold registry keys for long time to select them and the + - to expand/collapse keys aren't working properly. I have to hold, then i have to tap the menu bar on bottom to get them to expand/collapse. Really weird. Also, the input keyboard also needs to be held long time to popup. It seems like the ssoftware screen goes below the bottom of the physical screen. Very strange.
- I noticed similar issues in WM 6.5 with Advanced Configuration Tool by Julien Schapman. It seems like the ssoftware screen goes below the bottom of the physical screen. Selecting +/- menus requires sustained selection of folder, then i have to tap the menu bar on bottom to get them to expand/collapse. Really weird.
I wonder if these are .NET issues with older software or something like that?
Also, is anyone else noticing the new TouchFlow finger swipe direction is reversed from before? For example, in Email and PIE you have to swipe finger down to make page scroll up. Before you swiped finger up to make page scroll up! its different and is taking some getting used to. Its counterintuitive!
I am too am seriously thnking of going back to 6.1 .. now if I can just figure out how to do that ..... (anyone?)
sounds like an issue to me with the software, try and reflash it, im not getting any of those issue, but i haven't used touch flo/sense for that long
it was something I installed
I did some experimenting adding software one at a time after fresh ROM flash.
Looks like "Zoom Bar & Scroll" is the culprit ...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=518367
Too bad bc this was a great little tool .. it worked beautifully in WM 6.1. BUt in 6.5 it screws up +/- expand collapse of menus (eg in Email, or PHM Regedit, etc) and also appears to reverse the scroll inside PIE, Email, and other windows.
I'll leave the same message on the Zoom Bar & Scroll thread to let the developer know.
6.1
if you are wanting to go back to 6.1 i still have the stock rom saved on my hard drive incase i needed it

My Rain Of Questions. 8 Hardcore questions

Hello,
I'm getting really excited about my HTC P4350 more and more. First I wanted to throw it away but since I started tweaking now 2 months. I got a series of questions.
1) Would it be faster in speed. To native install software like advanced config etc.
2) Where can I find a series of unlock screens?
==> S2U2 "iPhone-like Unlock Screen" = NO GOOD. Makes the HTC Freak
3) Anyone got a series of keyboards to replace the stupid looking standard one. So I can just type on the screen instead of using the pen. 'I installed one previously and it went fubar when i selected it it was just a white screen with no keyboard showing and another one i installed when i pressed the keys nothing happend.
4) Also I've installed "MotoV2Wing6.5" in previous ROM's I could install instantly the "cool" black bars instead of the classic. But with this rom they won't install, any suggestions. Also the blue skin wich is used in menu's "me no like" so I was hoping that could be turned into black.
5) After booting the splash screen and the boot screen there's a white window before the phone starts. Any idea how to get rid off that.
6) Like in windows OS there is the command line : msconfig, to select start up programs is there any way of leaving out programs to get the HTC to start up quicker.
7) The bootscreen and the splash screen. Are they both necessery will the phone be faster if you leave one of them out. And how you do that.
8) I saw on a pic that someone had changed the color of the keyboard is that possible without opening the htc?
9) And one of the most important questions. The keyboard I've download a dutch keyboard fix, since I think that I have a dutch P4350 (I think) but the fn keys are still showing up ****ed (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=366756). So my keyboard is like this.

That's the first line.
As final statement. I really support this forum, I like it very much it's kind to his users and very helpfull. I really want to stress 2 to respect the "Cooks" because what they do is Pwn Windows in everyway and they always want to build better and faster Rom's and that takes a lot of personal time. And I think what they do is really GREAT. So what I am tryin to say is.
THANKS A LOT!!! <3
Best and kind regards,

as far as your keyboard goes there are 2 options that work fairly well one is imselector it can be found here no pics but you have several options for the type and style keyboard you want, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=296455
another option is something that i just started to use and love it, its called fingerboard http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=487677
and as far as replacing your splash screen ivan has just posted a topic on this and here it is http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=487677
your best way to get around is to just read the threads, yeah you may skim through lots of stuff ou may already know, dont understand or dont need but youll learn to navigate around those issues once your more familiar with things, good luck have fun

I got a questions, the first screen is the splash screen or the boot screen?
Answer to 1)The ROM that you have chosen is inherintly slow because of the Moto Home stuff. They tax both the RAM and the processor terribly.
Answer to 2)Just use the lock screen that comes built in with WM6.5. It's simple and just works.
Answer to 5)That white box you see is some kind of error, re-flash to a different ROM or hard reset to make it go away.
Answer to 6)Just navigate using file explorer to ROOT\Windows\Startup and delete whatever you don't want to run at startup there. Please note that there may not be alot here, and most if not all of the HTC stuff NEEDS to run at bootup in order for your device to work.
Answer to 7)Yes, they are both neccesary. If you remove them, all you will see is a black screen for the same amount of time that you saw the splash screens. While these screens are shown, the OS is being loaded into RAM, so its a neccesary thing.
Answer to 8)No, you cannot change the color of your keyboard without taking it out of your device.
Answer to 11)PHM Registry editor. Its small and just works.
boot screen then splash screen

Noob guide to remove Telstra stuff without flashing

Hi all,
Thanks to all for contributing here - so much good stuff! I wanted to post this here to help others in my situation.
My wife and I got a pair of HD2's during the week. Absolutely loving them.
I was too scared of bricking two brand new phones so I set about removing all traces of Telstra and tweaking them to our satisfaction without flashing the ROMS. After a few days I'm pretty happy with the results so far:
From standard to these (at the minute, changing all the time!):
on imgur.com look at /DPgJT.jpg and /9qUiN.jpg (I'm link restricted..)
I would say that you can do everything you want with these phones without having to flash the rom if you prefer not to.
For anyone looking to de-telstrify their phones, here's some easy steps (from memory). I'm put together this little guide as there's just too much information to wade through at the start. All of these recommendations are subjective, stuff I like but you might not!
1. Get ActiveSync (if pc doesn't have it) and use it to connect phone, explore to phone's storage card. Copy cabs here to run from your phone.
2. Join these forums so you can download relevant cab files, add your experiences, etc. One way to find cab files listed below is by putting cab name (as shown) in google, then clicking xda forum links in the results.
3. Start with "Unlock_Quicklinks_Telstra.cab". Frees 3 front quicklinks.
4. Get "Co0kie.HomeTab_v1.6.1.cab". Consider installing Max Manila instead – you need to pick one or the other; I like Cookie so far- seems simpler, seems less theme oriented and more tweakable. I like the 3 pages of quicklinks side by side.
5. Get "CHTEditor.v1.6.1.CAB" which lets you edit cookie. Make a quicklink button for it. Go in and play with settings to your liking. (Don't touch what you don't understand for the moment, take it slow..) Can replace 'Telstra 3G' with whatever (I've got "Dave's HD2" in the screenshot) using 'custom operator text'.
6. Also make quicklink for file explorer – you'll be using a lot.
7. Get "HD2Tweak 1.2.0_English.cab". Create quicklink to it and then play with settings in there. You can use 10. – Device startup – animation to stop the testra vid that plays on boot. Faster bootup and one more ad gone.
8. Also create button for "hd2 soft reset" which comes with above. Any time you need to reboot after install, if the cab doesn't prompt you then can use this button. Very handy.
9. Get "Duttys Task Manager for Leo.cab" This makes a nice file manager tool in top right corner, good for killing programs.
10 Get "BsB Tweaks 1.6.cab" and you have it all covered. I like this one for 'Tap time' to stop accidental taps. Also under the menu you can enable shake for screenshots and can reassign the 'phone' soft button.
At this point you have lots of quicklink buttons for adding new stuff, and lots of tools installed to some of those buttons. There is some crossover with all these tweak tools but they seem to co-exist peacefully as far as I can tell and all have something to offer that the other doesn't have.
Now it's time to clean up a bit more.
*With cookies you can drag your quicklinks around to arrange them. Just hold them until they pop up in the add/remove screen.
*Set your slider options so only the slider elements you like come up.
*Go into contacts and delete all those pricey branded services that you won't ever use unless you're drunk – you can always get your mate to ring instead.
*Personally I hate being pushed towards things and stuff like 'sensis search' just makes me angry. So I fired up File explorer and navigated to My device=>windows=>start menu=> programs and started deleting stuff I don't want to see. From here I believe it's only shortcuts so nothing is uninstalled for the moment. (Do this at own risk though). Just hold your finger on the file and a menu will pop up and you can choose delete.
Ok at this point there's very little branded stuff left on the phone (that I've found yet). Time for making it look nice. This is totally subjective and almost all the options are on xda developers. I would recommend:
10. Make folders in your storage card: sliders, clocks, wallpapers, installed. Makes it easy to organise/change these (by reinstalling the cab file)
11. Go to the site ppcmods to download the cabs for great sliders and clocks. Very nice collection.
12. Get "V6 TEST 5 HD2 GSM Only 1.66 WEE.cab" for the colour icons at the top. Great mod.
13. "AM Slider trasparente con cornice Sense 2.5.cab" and "- Orologio Trasparente Antonio_Sense2.5.CAB" make the slider and calendar transparent respectively.
14. For backgrounds the best I've found is to install this patch "HQWallpaperPatch_v1.21_forManila2.5.1920.cab" so you can have fullscreen (no black bands at top and bottom)
15. Followed by installing "HDWall" onto your PC – you can use this to make any pic a cab file. It gives you a nice preview as well so you can see what will be under the clocks/calendar/etc. Great program.
That's it, appearance tweaked as you like it.
You'll probably want/need some other apps that have been discussed and linked to pretty well – this was intended more to be a getting started guide to get you to a place where you like the look of the phone and there's no angrifying stuff in your face.
Last thing I can think of – you need to go into mail, and in your inbox view, choose menu => tools(scroll down to see) =>options=>signatures and take out the "Sent by Telstra NExtG".
Hope this helps.
Will this work with the HTC Touch Dual 850/Neon 200?
Sorry dude, no idea.
By the way I've found 'Send-A-Card' in the messages menu - if anyone knows how to remove this, please post here. It's the last bit of Telstra-ware I can see embedded in the phone and I'd love to get rid of it!
Thanks for putting together a quick and useful guide. These are the first things anyone wants to do with a new phone (especially a Telstra one - they have so much T-junk!), and it's great not to have to wade through pages and pages of posts to find the basics!
Appreciate it.
so it works?? feeback please
I have google the .cabs?
I am from Mexico
regards
yup, all the stuff he's said works. u can find the cabs on here as well
nice guide, thanks mate! be awesome if you can link in the cabs once you can post links!
MyEmail
Is there a way to get rid of MyEmail link in mailbox list ?
D.
Hello yes it so easy, when you be on the mail screen, go to option then go to account setting, there you could delete any account that you want.
regards
Any idea on how to get rid of the "send from my Telstra NextG handset" signature at the end of all new emails? Annoying that I have to delete it every time.
Cheers,

Champion! Great help for setting up my Telstra HD2. Thanks a heap!
Error with CHTEditor.exe - Help
I jsut received my phone the other day and am totally new to this. I read your Noob guide written by Kitestyle.
I have a Telstra model here in Canada. I loaded your Cookiehometab1.6.1. Worked fine. And then Tried your recommendation to load the CHTEditor.exe to the SD card.
Ran it and got an error:
"An unexpected error has occured in CHTEditor.exe. Select Quit and then restart the program, or select details for more info.
Details indicates this application requires a newer version of Microsoft.NET Compact Framework than the version installed on this device.
Am totally gray to this....recommendations appreaciated!
Thank you
Paul
the only way to truely de-Telstra and free your HD2 is to
1. HSPL3 -> removes CID lock
and
1.1 ( might want to do a task29 to really make sure ROM is squeaky clean )
and
2. Flash to official HTC WWE ( not Telstra branded ) rom, or any other cooked ROM of your choosing
its easy, and works well, i'm on Telstra NextG network, now running the official HTC english Hong Kong 1.72.831.1 ROM ( not Telstra branded ), and now have the ability to run any ROM i see fit, thanks to HSPL. Best part is, if and when you have to do a hard reset ( and you will at some stage ), all the Tel$tra nasties stay away....permanently
Hi
