I did the big storage hack thereby gaining for myself the extra 26.72 mb of space. I have a O2 mini. I used the Method C, using a copy of my own ROM (referred to notes from the Dubai forum). I then went out on to install all my programs into the newly acquired storage area. Some cab files from the saved extended rom (my extrom version is 1.12.920 wwe). Yes ! it is not blank even though I did the hack! Strange.

Earlier I had around 22 mb of memory free. Progressively as I kept using programs and closing them I find that my system is reporting less and less free space. Currently I have 5.37 MB free space, such that the systems flashes the message “the device is critically low of memory etc. etc.”
Total Main Memory - - > 57.42 MB
Allocated:31.49 MN Allocated: 25.92 MB

Free: 2.89 MB Free: 2.48 MB
Storage 26.72 MB
In use: 20.63 MB Free 6.09 MB
My contention is that after loading all programs in storage memory I should have enough free space for running programs. Since, this was the main reason to do a big storage hack. Moreover, now, at any given point I do run more than 1 program in the background.
Also assuming I did not have memory problems, how much further programs could I squeeze into the storage memory ?
Can someone please help?
It appears that you have a memory leak.
Memory can and does get consumed and lost over time due to badly written programs and other OS issues, but to be down to "critical memory" in 1 day is unusual. I run many more programs and that almost never happens to me, so I think that it's either the combination of programs you're using, or how you're closing the tasks. You should know that "closing" tasks can also leak memory potentially.
None of the programs you mention seem to be particularly dangerous, and your setup is not unconventional. I suggest that you use a systematic approach to examining your system and apps, checking each by opening and closing several times, to see which, if any are leaking memory. Run only one app at a time, checking memory before and after.
VJEschaton has a freememory display (and an alpha release memory compacter) if you don't have another one anywhere else.

Phew ! A reply at last ! Thank you. I was loosing patience and I needed some sort of explanation. I agree with your explanation. Before posting here I have been reading a lot on this forum and other forums regarding the big storage and what it does. A few questions that I have which I am listing below. I hope you don't mind answering.
(a) Do I need to flash my modified big rom again ? Then start all over again installing my programs.
(b) Could something be wrong with my Device. Which means I have to flash my old, save rom, go back to old Ext rom of 7 mb and then reflash with the Big storage ROM
(c) Stay where I am (with big storage) and install /uninstall programs till I pin point the offending program.
(d) It could be Pocket Player which is the culprit since that was the last program I installed. At that time my free memory was between 21 & 24.
(e) Can I continue to install more programs in storage memory until it is full to capacity and ;
(f) then install other programs to Card
(g) Why would my Ext Rom not show blank (since I have modified this area). Instead it is showing me the Ext Rom Version Number 1.12.920 WWE when it should be blank
(h) Would SK Tools, Freeup Ram be of any help if I install it.

Does anyone experience the free program memory problems in XDA Mini? In my case, after a day of usage, the memory reduce to 14 mb, when doing a soft reset, the free program memory go up to 24 mb, means I need to soft reset every days?
Note: normally I use the phone, Pocket Informant (calendar, contacts) and sms only.
Instead of doing soft reset, just go into:
Settings - System - Memory - (Running Programs tab).
You'll probably find a lot of open programs there. Close them.
Seems to be a major design fault in the Windows Mobile OS. But then again this is product from Microsoft we are talking about - not exactly a shock that they would, without hesitation, release software with such a major failing.
I think what IvorNeo 2 means is that even without any active programs, the storage/program memory will become very low over time. This has happened to me as well. With only Activesync and Batmon 2 active, memory level fell to sub-500K level and phone needed a soft-reset to regain functionality. Phone was not in use at the time (charging).
There are some other threads discussing how to free up memory, but I haven't come across any fixes for this particular bug (yet).
i have the same problem
in my s100 , the memory reduce to 19 mb,after 2 or 3 days when doing a soft reset, the free program memory go up to 27 mb

For me there are are 3 reasons why memory starts to decline:
Activesync eats up about 3MB each time you sync up and though it returns some when you kill the app it does not return the entire amount
html cache files when I surf with the device - gotta empty these along with the cookies...etc
duplicate processes and notification ques that pile up when you soft-reset the device. Over time these tiny bytes add up.
There's no fix for the main culprit of the memory loss - Activesync, maybe newer versions won't be so bad.
the same problem to me, I`m nor sure if it`s beacuse of aactive sync
This happens to my girlfriend's Mini and she does not browse nor does she use Activesync. Also I installed a program to get rid of the duplicate ques. In theory then she should not lose memory but she still does. It is just how Windows works....when you use programs you never get back 100% of the memory upon closing. Soft resets are just a necessary evil with Windows.
The latest version of SKTools has an additional neat feature to free-up RAM.
sk tools very useful program
but even this one works not so good as a soft reset.
Or with 64 mb RAM you can use oxios memory
http://www.oxios.com/memory/
be sure your programm memory less than 21mb while trying to free your memory up.
I have quite a lot of programs installed, most of them in Storage and TT5.x in SD card. Most DLL's also in Storage. I set my Prog Storage memory to 6.5-7 MB and I have over 30 MB for programs after applying SKTools FreeUp RAM utility.

@rustoss,
does this little applet close the running processes automatically once exitted?
thanx
hibernate.exe emulate filling memory till 90% & then system trying to clean possible RAM by itself i think so, i know exactly this action do the SKtools's freeupRAM, noone prog or process cannot be terminated by both.
closeapps.exe can!

I would like to verify the amount of user accessible memory on JasJar. I have the test unit with 1.11 system, but what bothers me much is the problem of memory - In the Settings\DeviceInformation\Hardware I have:
RAM size 64 MB,
FLASH SIZE 128 MB,
Storage Size 43.72
But If I open Settings\Memory it is only
Storage 43.72 MB
Program 47.93 MB
Where is the rest to fill 128 MB??
lukasz
I think (although i may be wrong) that the OS and preinstalled apps are using 84.28mb of the storage memory (the ROM - hence only 128 - 84.28 = 43.72mb storage available) and a portion of the RAM when running (hence only 47mb of the 64mb of RAM being available). Remember that WM5 uses ROM for persistant storage of data and RAM is used in the same way your desktop PC does (state, running code, cache etc).

RAM
HI
If i see the possible amount of RAM (for the running program) it's 47,93 Mb. After hardreset (before install any application and stopping the automatic loadaded program) i can use just about 30 Mb. It's normaly? Can I enlarge it somehow?

No. 47Mb is what you get AFTER the WM5 core OS parts have been loaded. Anything that is taken up from there (47-30Mb is 17Mb) are today plugins, applications, task switchers, operator customizations etc. Unlike WM 2003SE and earlier editions, there is no slider anymore, and the available RAM memory is fixed. So either wait for PPCTechs to provide a RAM upgrad efor the HTC Universal or limit yourself in the choice of starting up your most crucial applications. (and use a task switcher to close the programs instead of minimizing them ;-)
A RAM upgrade would not increase the program storage available (and would only shorten the battery life). It woudl only increase the amount of memeory available for running applications and this si hardly under stress even at 64Mb.
A ROM DOC upgrade would be a different matter. I ntoice the repalcement for the Dell Axim X50v has 256Mb ROM - very much a WM5 design consideration!
Re: RAM
I understand, but when i have just 30 Mb I was after hardreset. No plugin, no other programs, with the reset i stopped the antivirus and other factory default program load from extended ROM. No installed programs, full empty. Just the brand new PDA. How can free the 47-30 Mb RAM?
Breki
Maybe because you have a test unit with a pre-release of the WM5 OS? I suggest you ask I-Mate to provide you with a release version of the WM5 OS first.
Eh? So are you saying that after a hard reset, prior to any operator customisation apps running (ie, a with a very clean base installation of WM5 running), you only have 30Mb RAM? (and i guess you also have a little more ROM as none of the apps have installed to storage memory from the extended ROM).
To clarify: when do you have 30Mb free RAM and when do you have 47.93Mb free RAM?[/u]

I have 1.12.42WWE, but that is in my MDA Pro. Anyway, 1.12.38 looks like a release verison to me, not a test version.
My JasJar, as bought from Tottenham Court Road (so definitely not a test model) is as follows:
Rom Version: 1.12.38 WWE
ROM Date: 08/24/05
Radio Version: 1.03.00
Protocol Version: 42.36.P8
ExtROM Version: 1.12.120 WWE
No idea what my free memory is like after a hard reset, but I have over 30Mb free when it's in it's normal state (with Pocket Breeze running etc)...
Memory amout -again
Sub 69 - just to make things clear could you please post the following:
In the Settings\DeviceInformation\Hardware:
RAM size ? MB,
FLASH SIZE ? MB,
Storage Size ? MB.
And in Settings\Memory
Storage ? MB
Program ? MB

Thanks to my running SBSH weather, SBSH pocket breezee and pocket plus I get down to about 20Mb free before I've even done anything!
In my case, running SPB Diary, SPB Pocket Plus and PocketZenPhone leaves me with 25Mb RAM free.
But, please do not forget that:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Init also contains services that are launched and that come out of the RAM
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Services also contains services & apps that are launched and that come out of the RAM
I am curious to see how much memory will be free when booted up in safe mode

Does anyone have any rec's. for applications that can break down memory usage on a per process basis (like the windows task manager)? I'd like to see which ones are the memory hogs and decide if I really do need them... I hear pocket plus is a killer!
Memory management...
Hmmm, Just to stop for a little while on the "Program" memory subject -
After few hours of regular use I have verified that have 15.11 MB available, after RunningPrograms \STOP ALL there was 15.21, but after softreset there is 19.79 ! so there is definately some kind of the unlisted or "system" proceses which steal RAM. I hope it will be solved in the future releases of the system. Some kind of the task manager to see what is going on would be a nice thing. Luk

i read somewhere on here that memmaid works fine in wm5, that shows processess running and alot of other info
I have a Wing Win Mobile 6 Pro CE OS 5.2.1235 (Build 17740.0.2.0)
In the Memory settings it shows Program is using:
Total: 43.87 MB
In Use: 39.42 MB
Free: 4.45 MB
And no programs are running???? I have a friend with the Dash and they have the same issue also.
I store my files on 4GB mem and only have main programs on the internal storage.
Please Advise.
Its a 12mb pagepool problem on the wing, they have a fix for it already, prob listed more than several times on this forum. Search for wing page pool. It takes litterally a second to do and you will have more memory after a reset. And the free memory is your RAM has nothing todo with how big your files are and where they are stored, Its simply what the Wings OS is using to run.
Aside from the 12mb pagepool:
1. MS Live has a severe memory leak.
2. My5 sucks up memory as well.
Many things in the standard wing ROM seem to have bad memory leaks...
There's a few things you can do.
I'm running an 8MB page pool.
What services/apps are unecessary and can delete/remove without affecting the standard image?
Hello All.
I installed on my Qtek 9090 a ROM WM6 in Spanish, everything works fine but when I see how little storage space is left and plenty of room for programs that I use, I wonder:
How can free up space or distribute the available space for storage and programs.
This is data:
Memory storage:
Total space 60.30MB, In Use 52.55MB, Free 7.5MB
Memory Program:
Total space 109.12MB, In Use 37.45MB, Free 71.67MB
What I want is to have more memory for storage, as I do this?
Or able to balance the memory as is done in WM2003.
Forgive but do not like taking a picture of the device.
Unistall programs that dont need speeds and install on Storage card, that way yu can save lots of memory space.

It's not that easy. Every program I can install in the storage card, I try to do. I also changed my email and attachments to the storage card. Prior to syncing my email, I had 18MB and the PIM file was 11MB. 3/4 of the way through, I have 8MB left and the PIM file is 12MB.
After looking in every directory, I can't seem to find why 10MB of space was used. Further, you can't relocate the PIM file.
In WM2003, you can adjust the program and storage memory. You can't in WM6.
Try this...
Go see the second post here for what I do to keep the storage running with 12MB free and still install mad amounts of software!
Best advice is to read the bit about Pocket Mechanic - it'll help move most (not all) software to the card for you - changing all the reg entries and links for you!
And if it's speed you're after, try Pocket Hack Master from the same company!
But DO remember to backup with something like Spb Clone BEFORE you paly with these tools! Saves any embarrassment later

i think you may need ramdisk
look at the following thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=382944
I started getting warnings on low "Storage Space" on my HD2. This is weired, since I keep my documents and apps on SD. I only installed few very small apps after flashing Energy ROM onto HD2.
I have checked memory allocation and it seams total memory is allocated towards Program and Storage (as in attached picture). I can see that free "Storage Memory" is rather low, but I am not sure on :
1.What is using it. When looking into File explorer, you can't see if the file is using Storage memory or Program memory. I even clicked on "Find large file using storage memory". It found many files, but all of them where on SD... so it should not cause the problem I have.
2. How to reallocate some memory allocated to "Program" into "Storage".
I have Android running from my SD, but I expect this should be only using memory on SD, right?
... and yes, it is very annoying, since it reminds about short memory every time I turn my phone on...
Same problem. 3 days I have HD2, I install Radio Leo 2.15.50.14 and Energy.Leo.29007.Sense2.5.Cookie.2.0.Dec.27 (576MB RAM) and I have:
Storage size (Total storage): 200,27 MB (Used 65,30)
Total program: 449,22 MB (Used 170,33 MB)
But after installing few apps I had only 20MB free space, but more 200MB free program RAM. But for program is enough about 50-80 free RAM, 200 MB is unnecessary...
On my Xperia X1 with 826x ROM i have Total storage 295 MB and Program 191,25 MB and it´s fine.
I´m trying some else ROMs, but not with better parameters.
Here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DSsCdwY9ngM I can see 290MB Total storage, but which ROM is it??? Or is possible somehow transferred memory from Program (RAM) to Total storage?
The problem may be with hidden caches, as in temp. internet files.
I´ve tested about 20 ROMs, and I found 3 good ROMs with large internal storage.
Best looks me Chucks ROMs http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=618787
- Lite Chucky version (but lite for Chuck - has many program and utils) has 310MB Free
- Tabtastic has 251 free
both are in GTX (white) skin, but he has there links for some old ROMs, where are some dark ROMs
And 256MB free has http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=684646
But I only flash these ROMs, testing will come, but looks without bugs (I hope). ;-)

I think the key questions are:
1. How to find out what files are using that Storage Memory. If I see that, I might figure out what I can delete.
2. How to reallocate memory from Program Memory to Storage Memory

Of course, you´re right, but:
1) too much work with unclear results
2) I didn´t find this answer (I think there is no way to reallocate memory outside ROM cooking)
So for me is simpler test ROMs and find the best, and the 3 ROMs above look usably...
I can't believe that cook like Energy, whos ROM's are used by most users would leave only memory for 2 new apps to be installed after fresh ROM... There is something either wrong in my understanding, or just needs some simple entry in registry or similar.

Not for 2 new apps, after flashing you have 130MB free, but after 5-7 apps and some ringtones I had 20MB. I have X1 with more 15 apps and same ringtones and I have 70MB free, thats enough, and same I want from my HD2. And I don´t understand, why Energy has after flash 200MB total and 66MB used, and Chucky´s ROM has 250-310MB total and 18-28 used. And same ore more apps and utils inside...
Have removed all apps via "manage applications" still low storage memory.... I will need new ROM as it looks... I have Energy ROM on my Pro2 device, and there I have 178 MB free storage memory. Go figure...
Energy ROMs I used all time on my Xperia X1 and there were wery good with enough free storage for me, so with these good experience first ROM which I install to my new HD2 was Energy too, but after I found the problem with low storage... So maybe the problem with storage is only for HD2, if you have on TP2 180MB free, this looks enough. ;-)
Now I have in HD2 ChuckyDexterDarkOne and I have 283MB Total, 172 Used (after install every apps and files which I want in Internal storage - after HR was used about 20MB only with a lot of apps and tools inside the ROM) and 111 free... ;-) NICE ;-)
