Edge Question - JAMin, XDA Neo, S200 General

How can I know if I am using EDGE at my Qtek s200 or not? I see G sign at the top and not E. Is there a way to see if I am in the EDGE area or not? Like normal mobile phones has E letter when the phone is in EDGE coverage.

BTW,
EDGE [E] icon instead of GPRS [G]
HKLM\Drivers\BuiltIn\RIL\EnableDifferGprsEdgeIcon" value="1"
(Original Value = 0)
I tried the registry hack above but although I change the value to 1, after I soft reset I see it is back to 0. Why I cant change it? Any thoughts?

If I understand correctly changing it to E will always show E and not switch to G when on GPRS
Anyone else have more info?

So it is not possible to see whether i am in EDGE or in GPRS?
:?:

I asked this question in Howard Forums I was told the indicatior does not change dynamically depending on the network (Edge/GPRS) but will always show E no matter which one you are connected to. Based on this I did not change the reg

My Jamin has that registry key set by default, and my device does show a G or an E, depending on what it's detected.
I've seen it change from G to E and back again quite frequently, so it (registry key) does not force it to stay on E.

Thanks for the info, I will give it a try.
Guess the info I had gotten earlier was incorrect

Same here - I'm sitting at home with a 'G' right now - and I generally get an 'E' in the office.

I am making speed test to understand whether i am in edge or not For instance at home i get around 40-45k while 300mt away from home i can get 120k. But all the time i get G at the today screen. :?

I am using this hack for about 2 weeks in my wizard and fortunately it shows E or G depending the presence of Edge

Hmm.. Why I cant change the value to ''1'' then?

The G or E does change on the latest i-mate rom. You could also go and run a speed test.
go www.dslreports.com/mspeed/ and select 100k, 200k or 600k
if your reaching over 50, you are probably on edge
Edge is not great in suburbs of cleveland, but i get 85 to 135 kbit/sec....
I seem to get lower speeds on the smaller files..
I get about 130 for the 200k file in about 14 seconds on my jamin with edge and about 37 to 45 on 200k file in about 44 seconds on my jasjar with gprs (I really wish the jasjar had edge) it has utms, but usa does not have utms 2100 band..

Upgrading from PDA2k to K-JAM

I'm having slow GPRS connection in PDA2k, so I decided to go with K-JAM because of EDGE connection. Does the edge connection sometimes get slow or it is always fast?
Ok, about the processor of K-JAM, is it good enough like PDA2k or slower?
Finally, What do you advise me, to stay with PDA2k or buy K-JAM?
Thank you
I have both; and while the PDA2k has a faster processor, it can sometimes get bogged down doing Phone related stuff and appear to freeze. The K-JAM has a dual core processor, with one core dedicated to the phone, and I have yet to see the device freeze. However, it does slow down occasionally, though not often.
The radio is better on the K-JAM. In nearly 6 weeks, its only dropped 2 calls. That's all... just 2.
Edge is much faster than GPRS, so you will see some improvement, but its going to depend on signal strength, and you won't have any visible indication from the device that you're using Edge. The connection will just appear faster. As long as you have a strong cell signal, you should be able to get on the Edge network (if the network supports Edge). And yes, there are times when it does appear slow. A soft reset usually makes the device pick back up the speed it appears to have lost.
Having both devices as I do, I find that both are acceptable for my needs; but I like the size of the K-JAM better, prefer the way the keyboard slides out (its actually on tracks and locks in place, vs. the PDA2k), and prefer the size of the K-JAM keyboard keys over those of the PDA2k.
I'll still use the PDA2k occassionally, but will be using the K-JAM as my daily driver from now on.
Thank you Mr. Christopher Spera for your advice. I will buy a new K-JAM and I'll compare it with pda2k and share the results.

If you're able to connect by EDGE please try to chanche EnableDifferGprsEdgeIcon value in HKLM\Drivers\BuilIn\RIL, it's very interesting...
You're right Christopher. Yesterday I bought kjam and my service provider supports edge. The internet speed was very good. I got around 12Kb/s downloading speed. Before, when I was using PDA2K I got only 2.5 kb/s and sometimes the page can't load.

My K-JAM does not have this registry key, so i'm not certain what to change...
After adding the key I got the connecting GPRS icon with static arrow instead the moving arrows (as seen during connecting phase). The G was gone. Does it mean you get the G only when you are using GPRS and the other icon while on EDGE network?

This value must be DWORD type. It equals 0 by default, I tried to change it to 1. Unfortunately nothing changed, I got the same G with static arrows. I guess it's because my operator doesn't provide EDGE. I hoped someone gets different...

MDA and EDGE

ok so i updated new mda us to offical rom 2.26 that tmo has on website and it showed an E for edge all the time ok fine
now when i did a hardreset it nolonger showed the E icon for egde just G
i went ahead and reinstalled update and still showed G i check the registry and it shows EnableDIfferGprsEdgeIcon as a value of 0 why did it change and why does it not show E anyone can help
thanks you guys rock!
-shrug-
After my friend did the update, he had an E.
When I did the update, I had a G, and had to manually set the E in the registry, haha.
I guess it's just funky Windows-ness.
i agree i spoke to tmo data tech support and told them that the tweak sometimes does not hold they refused to realize this problem as after i did 4 updates with same rom i went into reg with total commander and it still showed value of 0 so i did what u did change it to 1 and vola E for edge thanx for replay
Hi.
So are you actually enabling EDGE or just the icon with this reg hack ?
just icon... edge is always enabled newb.
lol ok
what is edge anyway ?
EDGE =
A faster data connection than your standard GPRS. Need a phone that supports it, but the Wizard does, so yeah. ^_^
EDGE is always on be default, but not all areas have EDGE. Where I live in the middle of Alabama, there's no EDGE, but where I work, Huntsville, my icon changes from a G to an E.

8525 has some bugs...

I bought an 8525 a couple of days ago and have been playing around with it. The 8525 has replaced my 8125, which I loved dearly...
I have noticed 3 major bugs in the device :
1) The 8525 does not indicate when you are using edge by the "E" icon. It simply has the "G" while producing edge speed.
2) The non-3G internet connection is terrible. It times-out quite often. For instance, when I try to check my email using pocket outlook it sometimes takes forever.. or when i am trying to access a website, it says locating for about 1-2 minutes before actually opening it up. When the internet is working without the those time-outs and lags, it works great (better then the 8125 in non-3G areas).
3) Pressing the power button (when the devices screen is off to save battery life) has a weird 2-3 second delay. This never happened with the 8125...
Here is my Device info:
Rom version : 1.34.502.1
Rom date : 9/21/06
Radio Version : 1.16.00.00
Protocol version : 32.53.7018.01H
The main reason I am posting this is to find out if I am the ONLY one experiencing these problems, if so, I am going to do a warranty exchange swap. If anybody has any suggestions or comments please share it here..

Yes you're the only one with these problems. I don't know how they had the nerve to sell you it. I have searched the threads and posts here and let me see.... no ... nobody's had anything like this.
I'd take it back!
Edit: OMG look what I just stumbled on! Stop the presses perhaps not MAJOR bugs but still bugs of mass destruction!

Here is my experience so far:
1) I have yet to see an E indicator for Edge. I live in LA and we are still waiting for our 3G deployment so edge is all we get. I do want to point out that on page 25 of the 8525 manual it does not indicate that there is an edge indicator/symbol display specifically for edge.
2)The non-3G connection here in LA has always been spotty at best so I can't really comment on that. I do however notice that I cannot connect to a lot of the streaming content at locations where it was possible with my 3125 just a week ago. Also it take longer to get the streaming playing if it does connects.
3) For me the delay for power up from power save is about 1 second.
I have never used a 8125 before so I have no way of comparing the behavior of the two.

I can't confirm this because I've not left my excellent 3G signal area yet but from what I understand the current rom doesn't differentiate between GPRS and EDGE.

Mine is a 1 second delay. No DSODs though, so it's no big deal for me.
well....i too just upgraded from the 8125...and i find the edge to be a lil suspect. sometimes i take longer than it should to pull up my email.
as far as the power button....it takes longer to turn it on when the screen is locked than the 8125.
The speed of a EDGE or GPRS connection also depends on the serving cell's current capacity. If there is too much traffic, you won't get the maximum of timeslots and so bandwidth will go down. 3G is not very different regarding this issue, but the most likely capacity bottleneck is the basestation's connection to the core network. Here in Germany a lot of 3G basestations have only 2 MBit/s connections, so two HSDPA-clients can use capacity to the full.

1. I have never got a E but I am not to sure if Telstra even has a Edge network.
2. I have never been out of UMTS coverage since I got it so I don't know.
3. It takes about 1 second for mine to start-up.
Everthing working great, but no E for Edge either!

Just wanted to advise, my 8525 shipped with the exact specifications as yours. I too am not receiving an "E" for Edge transmissions. However, as one of the previous posts suggests, we may never receive an actual "E" up top in our display. Haven't had any of the timeouts you are experiencing either. My email and browsing via GPRS/Edge(Edge if I truly am receiving it) works fine. No timeouts on either e-mail retrieval or browsing at this time. Over 2 days battery life so far between charges. Woohoo! Also, in terms of actually switching from stand-by mode to power up, takes approx. 1 sec. as well. I have not yet been in a UMTS area, so I cannot advise of battery life, performance issues related to that. I'm still loving my device!

Yes your right of course, I was being petty cos these problems are already posted elsewhere. Sorry for being childish.
I have to say though here in Aberdeen Scotland my GPRS connection is super fast, faster than my wifi connection and it's not on 3G due to my ancient sim card (must get a new one). So more to do with coverage/local GPRS conditions I guess. Weird cos until a few days ago it continually timed out with page not found and now works amazingly well. I changed nothing and I do not pay for a data tarriff!! I do of course get charged for bytes downloaded but still lots of folk on o2 like me don't get this unless they have a data contract. Weird.

For those of you who have connection problems, try switching to the isp.cingular AP (requires the PDA Connect plan). I had all sorts of difficulties when using the default wap.cingular AP, but the ISP one works fine...

I'm thinking about it, I just want to know for sure it'll fix these problems because I probably can't go back if it doesn't...
Is it possible to test the isp.cingular settings (and get charged) before switching, or do they not work at all without PDA connect on my account?
Just as a headsup to everyone who got the 8525 from Cingular, one of the things I was able to find out is the "G" in this case, also stands for Edge, I also believe it may or may not be in the documentation but have not been able to confirm that yet, so in this case:
"G" - GPRS, GSM and EDGE
"U" - UMTS and HSDPA
Please take this with a grain of salt.
JB
Can anyone explain the difference between the "wap.cingular" and the "isp.cingular" configurations and the step necessary to make the adjustments?
Also, I have been having some weird connectivity issues where my cingular signal become unstable when switching the Wifi radio on and off. The only way to recover is to soft reset the 8525.
I live in metro Philadelphia and have tested this both in the city and the surrounding suburbs.
Thanks!

I've got an 8125 and an 8525 side by side in the same room, and the 8125 has an E, and the 8525 says G. Now, the documentation I have clearly distinguishes between the two. "Status Indicators" on the last page of the "Getting Started Guide."
I am using mediaNET on both.
This is a little annoying, but honestly, the speed is the same. Unless someone can confirm that this is causing lower speeds to be rejected, it's just an annoyance that, if I recally from my 2125, can be tweaked in the registry or some other simple tweak.
"Dial up"
Also, I'm having some irregularities using the 8525 as a "modem" for my computer. I have a C2D MacBook Pro, running Mac OS 10.4.8 and Windows XPSP2. With my 8125 I could use "dialup" on the Mac side via BT. On the Windows side, I could use dialup using the USB connection. (And BT in bootcamp)
I also have tested this with a regular plain HP PC laptop.
I have noticed that it doesn't always connect on the first try, whereas the 8125 always did. The connection speed is the same as tested on DSLreports mobile, but I have to say, I find this a little odd that it doesn't always connect.
I am far away from the nearest 3G area, so I won't be able to test it there until my next trip, but, oy....
Anyone else with this problem?

The cingular rom on the 8525 DOES NOT (not yelling) include an E icon, only G and U. When in G you are actually on EDGE, run a speedtest and you will see. Hopefully they will correct this in the future release. And since there is no included E icon there is no reg tweak that will correct this.

U icon instead of E

Ok simple and possible stupid question...
All yesterday my phone was displaying the E icon next to my antenna showing that there was the possiblity of connecting to the Edge network... Now I happen to work in a area where 3G is not supported but I live in one where its spotty.
I went home last night and while fooling with the phone I noticed the U icon instead of the E... Note I'm NOT using the MEdia connection either, I know this is just simply stating that 3G is currenty avilable where I am.
Now I'm back at work today and the U icon is still there, so I got to test it and when I connect it connects with a mini E above the antenna bars.... So why does my major network icon never change showing me whats avilable?
I installed the HTC Kaiser Dialer + 3G-Batt Icons for my vp3G rom, so I dont know if maybe thats causing it?
I just signed up for media maxx today so I'll test my media connection when I get home to see if it shows up with a 3G...
It doesn't show you what's available. It shows you how you connected, if you are connected.
Um, no it shows whats avilable because this is showing up when my phone is not connected to the MEdia Net service.
Right from the manual.
The LARGE U an E icons are the ones I'm talking about...
Either way I removed the HTC Kaiser Dialer + 3G-Batt Icons program, and it went back to a E icon
so I think it had something to do with that.
The manual is wrong. I am in a 3.5G area, and my connection icon routinely changes from E to U, even while using it.
You're trying to solve something that is not only not solvable, but is also not a big deal anyway.

GPRS / EDGE Icon

Hello,
Does someone noticed about gprs or edge icon in htc wizard.
When the edge icon is disabled ( i.e In default settings ). It shows G Icon at the top of screen, that is normal. BUT when we press the power button at the top of the device and press it again, The device wakes-up. But the G icon changes to E icon and resets after softreset ( i.e G icon )
Points:
1. G icon changes to E icon when we wakeup the device!
2. Only After softreset it goes to normal. i.e G icon but same probem after wakeup!
I tried all the roms in this site but same problem. Also changed the radio rom.
Please someone check this in your phone
Many Thanks
Srikanth.K
The GPRS / EDGE Icon 'E' or 'G' changes according to the service available in the area of use.If the Edge sevice is available in some area,it'll automatically change to 'E',otherwise,it'll remain 'G' as default.

Hello,
Ok, but why the icon should change only after I wakeup the device.
Another thing I noticed that:
When I connect to internet via GPRS but it shows as connected to EDGE in brackets when I click on that E icon. I do not have any EDGE connections only GPRS!
Thanks for reply

GPRS icon not visable after wakeup
Hello.
No reply
Just uploaded some screenshots...
After I start/boot my htc wizard it will be like G icon in top of the bar ( i.e screenshot_1 )
After I press power button the device will go to sleep mode and again I press the some button ( i.e power ) the device will wakeup. but the G icon will be conveted to E icon ( i.e screenshot_2 ) that's the problem.
Another thing I noticed that:
I connected to internet ( i.e GPRS ) before going to sleep mode and I clicked on that G icon and it showed as "connected to GPRS). But when it goes to sleep mode and when I waked it and the icon has changed to E icon. And again I clicked on that E icon and it showed "connected to EDGE" instead of showing GPRS.
I have disabled the "EnableDifferGprsEdgeIcon" setting in registry. Plz you also disable this before you test the my problem.
Plz anyone check it and tell me.
Many thanks

GPRS/EDGE is the same thing. gprs is a slower network than edge. it still comes from the same provider. If you notice, in a city you will have EDGE almost always, while in some parts of the country you only have GPRS because they have no need to update towers.
as far as the wizard is concerned I do not believe it is capable of 3G so it will only get EDGE/GPRS.
I tried to use a sim card from ATT but it did not get 3G speeds. My friends phone is also not 3G capable even though it came from ATT.
I'm not sure what your concern is. if you have E vs G it means there is a better network around, but it still comes from the same carrier.
Gprs / Edge
Thanks...
By-the-way. I edited the operator name and given it as cingular. But the my default operator is cellone.
My sim is of BSNL not the at&t.
My problem is that why the icon should change when the mobile goes to sleep mode. After wakeup the icon will be changed ( i.e E icon ) and also my connection details will be changed ( i.e GPRS to EDGE ). This problem only occors upon going to sleep mode and after wakeup.
I tryed all the wm6 and wm6.1 roms in this webiste, all have same thing. But this problem will not occors in WM5. The icon will be G and will not change upon Sleep mode/wakeup.
This problem is only with WM6 & WM6.1.
Many thanks

I sometimes get pissed when im otside of a city and it turns to G. then I feel like I'm in the boonies.
I never saw the issue you are describing. maybe it is your network.

Gprs / Edge
Hello,
OK DONE.
Now the E icon is stable/visible after startup and also at wakeup.
What I did is:
1. Enabled the "EnableDifferGprsEdgeIcon" setting in registry.
2. I Downloaded and installed the GB-SOFT GPRS Tweak app.
3. Opened the software and there was 6 tweaks in page.
4. I ticked on the "Search GPRS [G-E-3G] on start radio" box & rebooted.
5. Now: At the startup of my device, the G icon will not display and only the E icon.
6. And also will not change after wakeup ( Thats stable ).
Ok, now the E icon is stable. So I edited the "EnableDifferGprsEdgeIcon" and given it as 0 to disable it ( i.e To show G icon instead of showing E. )
But without luck. The problem rised again.
I think that, this problem is due to RADIO ROM.
I Tested some of other radio roms also but had no luck. Today morning I also flashed to WM5 offical rom but there is now problem with it ( i.e GPRS Icon is stable ).
Do you know which RADIO Roms is the best and fixes my problem.
I tested these 4 Radio Roms:
1. 02.07.10
2. 02.71.11
3. 02.37.11
4. 02.47.11
Many thanks

Try these both, they are considered to be the most stable and with good radio signals :-
Radio Rom 2.19.11
Radio Rom 2.69.11
Same problem
Hello
Tryed these radio rom also as you given but have same problem.
I think that the GPRS will search only when wake up but not at the startup of the device.
May be, there are some tweaks in registry that can be made to search the GPRS on startup of the device or an startup app.
Do anyone know that, GPRS and EDGE are the same sevice or thay are different?
Does anyone know that, any software/app that show where I am ( i.e Network Name, Name of area & etc )?
Many Thanks

Hello,
Does someone noticed about gprs or edge icon in htc wizard.
Many Thanks
