Well, i wanted to play a little with the device so i started to flash it with various roms and then i thought that the device has warranty void if reflashed... i hope that nothing bad happens to it, because it works just fine, but i would feel much better with a backup of the original rom - just in case... do yuo by a chance have a one that shows this info: 2.79.00ENG (it came along with the radio stack that i left intact - version T310 and running the protocol 32S54)... the unit operates in Poland so i guess that the rom was built for the gsm provider - era gsm... if you do have it, or have a mda and can make a backup i would be truly grateful - to say the least![/b]

Helo Pug,
I am not an expert in this area. I have currently the french rom which I find not very stable... I am planning to switch to this new rom 1.11.162 1.04. I obviously dont need the O2 stuff. There is apparently a patch to correct the crappy camera.
So when I look into the folder your are mentionning which rom should I download?
Some of them are modified, updated, cooked, baked...
Also, after the upgrade, should I configurate anything related to the telephone/country operator?
I am a bit lost, could you please help?
Many thanks
Sayborg

Ok, now why isn't this a sticky?
Oh, great. Thank pug for soon respond. I've just try the last and feel good.
Hi @Pug!
Is it totally remove O2 Active UI in my PPC? If like that, I will trying now. Thanks
Phuong: don't what you want. If you browse Pug's directory, you must find that there are two version:
+ one is keepping as much as original from O2 (of course, adding radio and bluetooth profile)
+ one with extended rom (pug call it stripped).
If you don't want O2 Active UI and insist on using original rom, you can choose Corporation and code is 0506. You must know that Pug have posted 2 plugins of O2 (battery and time) for today screen.
Have fun.
Backup and restore
Just a quick question...
If you perform a backup using ActiveSync then do an upgrade with one of Pugs Roms, having completed the upgrade is it possible to apply the restore from ActiveSync to reinstate all the setting/contacts etc you previously had?
Tom
yup yup! better using Sprite Backup....
Backups
OK
So I avoid ActiveSync and use Sprite, hate to be a pain an' all, anyone got link to hand for Sprite?
You may well be able to solve another issue for me here...
Am I right in guessing that if you are changing between ROMS for a similar OS on the same device that backups are OK, but if you are changing ROMS for a different OS the device basically becomes a so different backups are no use?
Tom
Query on Device Info
Evening folks
Just completed the update to Pugs 162 ROM, third from the list at the top.
I used Sprite to backup before I started, update went without issue, then used Sprite to restore afterwards.
The only thing that puzzled me was when I checked the Device Information screen I see:
ROM Version 1.11.00 WWE
Radio Verson 1.04.00
ExtROM Version 1.11.112 WWE
Is this correct, kind of expected to see162 in there somewhere, has the restore from Sprite sent me partially back again?
Tom
hi,
If you wish to change the version number yourself, use a registry editor and go to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\OEM\3RDVERSION and change the MSYSTEM value to whatever you like.
thanks

OK, so I take it from your reply that the revisions are correct for a successful update? I don't care if it is simply displaying the wrong number.
Being the first time I had upgraded and restored data afterwards I was worried in case the restore had possibly returned any thing to the my original ROM state.
Tom
Restoring files after a RoM upgrade is a waste of time as all you do is replace new files with old, you're better off just copying files you want to keep to your SD card and backing up your contacts.

Ah the Man himself!
Thanks for your work chap.
OK, so if I do quick hard reset, that'll return me to your ROM as installed then I can just install the stuff I require, do a swift sync of contacts etc from Outlook and I'll be cooking on gas?
One small thing I discovered on the way to work this morning, the phone works fine on the handset, but although it dials and appeas 'in call' through the BT headset, I can't hear anything nor can the other party hear me. I did notice some....data noise (ahh the days of listening to modems).... when the BT headset opens a communication.
Tom
Tom,
What version of ROM are yu currently using, as found to my horror that the .169 version sucks with connection to Bluetooth devices, even the ones O2 recommend....
Have found the only stable version for bluetooth connectivity is .162... , albeit a step backwards....
God bless o2....

God something O2 certainly!
I'm using Pugs 162 from the top of this thread (the 3rd one without the O2 junk in it, but with the Bluetooth and Camera changes)
Seems to be working fine so far.
I meant to post a follow up regarding my Bluetooth problem, I think I might have failed to read the screen properly and chosen the High Quality rather than headset otpion.

Hi there;
I've had my K-Jam for about a year now, purchased used.
IPL 2.16
SPL 2.16
GSM 02.07.10
OS 2.16.9.1
I would like to completely wipe / re-install everything on this phone. What is the best way to proceed?
I would like the phone to be feature rich, but also quick.
It is def sim unlocked, I'm not sure about CID lock though.
Thanks!
Also, I'd love to run WM6, but don't want to suffer poor performance.

First, take a backup of where you are so you can get back to this point if you don't like where you end up Just use something like spb backup or similar. ALso you may want to put PIM Backup on your phone now and get a good backup of your stuff that way. Then you can restore onto WM6 with this same program (you can NOT restore from spb backup (or similar tools) from wm5 to wm6, or really from one rom to another rom for that matter due to conflicts with the registry, differences in teh PIM database, etc).
Second: Read and follow this thread for flashing and pointers to CID Unlocking your device (if you aren't sure, then just do it so you are sure )
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=298613
Third: Decide what custom rom you want to move to. If you want WM6, then currently I'd recommend XPlore 1.1 (Fast and stable). (NBD gets good remarks, and the current Faria Vanilla WM6 Beta I'm running is excellent, but not available yet). Also the Faria WM6 "the real thing" is supposed to be good and comes with lots of stuff built in (XPlore is a vanilla/clean rom so you add what you want).
If you want a good WM5 that is stable and loaded then try Faria AKU 3.3 or the Molski/Faria AKU 3.3 Crossbow themed one.
REmember that with most custom roms (Faria ones tend to be the exception) you will not have GPRS setup when you flash it, so you need to get those settings from your carrier. Same with MMS. Most carrier support sites provides cabs or instructions on how to setup GRPS and MMS.
Good luck and have fun!
Thanks for the reply, very helpful.
Will I notice any performance differences running WM6 Vs. WM5 ?
Also, what are the recommendations on upgrading the Radio ROM?
Thanks!

Overall I find WM6 faster and more responsive than WM5. But then I'm also running the phone overclocked more with BatteryStatus, so maybe that would have lessened the difference I saw (had I ran BatteryStatus on WM5).

Good question. It seems with WM6 there are issues with some carriers and the radios. I'm on Cingular and find that I can't use any of the radios above 2.19 TMo UK one on the ftp site here. The newer radios cause me to miss calls and sms. Others on T-Mobile (US and Europe) are running the newer radios (2.61, 2.69) and having no issues. But overall most seem to agree 2.19 is the most reliable (but not the best at signal performance )
A few people have had so much problems with WM6 and radios they've went back to Wm5 due to it. For me on 2.19, I have had no missed calls or SMS so I'm fine with that setup (and I get good reception at my house and even in some spotty areas its not much different than when I had the stock Cingular 2.25 rom and radio). Overall I'm happy with WM6 and don't have a reason to move back to WM5.
Thanks again for a great reply.
I'm in the process of getting some back-up software on there... I've downloaded PPCPimBackupV1.5 and SPB Backup...
Then I'll do the CID unlock to double check.
Then I plan on trying XPlore 1.1.
Thanks again
Awesome, I just finished flashing XPlore 1.1 thanks for all your help!
Now to load it up with all my apps again.
What's the best way to get GPRS / etc. settings for my provider?

Glad it worked for you. Welcome to the addiction of flashing
For Cingular they have a website with support information and it has all the settings to setup GPRS and MMS. Look at your provider's website for similar.

Try this, unzip it, copy the cab to your device and run it.
auto config
doesn't seem to work on my phone: I installed the CAB, run it, I check the box, but there are no carriers listed in the drop down and when I click OK in the top right corner, it just closes the window.
Any thoughts? This could be a handy tool... if it worked.
Hello.
I want to change/upgrade my ROM to WM6. But I want to make a Backup of my existing from first (maybe I'm to stupid to do the Update) and to have the chance to get my MDA Vario back to life I want to make a backup of the ROM is installed at this time.
Could somebody maybe tell me how i can backup my ROM? And... How can I reinstall the ROM? I think it will be moved to the SD Card?
Thanks a lot.
You might want to try this then first:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=305294
Thanks for this.
May problem is that I have a "very" new ROM installed (T-Mobile MDA Vario 2.21.2.8 GER). and I'm unable to complete the the CID unlock process (the Netlock is removed allready with the lokiwiz 3a.).
If I'm entering the Bootloader and open mtty I'm .not able to open the USB port.
Does it mean I need to downgrade?
Thanks Maik
There is a newer public T-Mobile ROM on the T-Mobile website: Version 2.26.2
You need to downgrade your ROM to custom 1.05 (check the WIKI page) in order to run lokwiz CID unlocker!
I tried the version 3 of lokwiz but the only one which worked properly on my MDA was the version .2b
How ever,
the CID lock should not effect the MTTY utility. This is an official HTC procedure and should work on any WIZ.
UPDATE:
I just saw that you're talking about a german ROM? The latest public german ROM is 3.3.8 (check the german T-Mobile site for that!). If you want to keep the older 2.21 you can find it at the Austrian T-Mobile site again after downgrading and unlocking your CID
I am running the german rom AKU3.3 myself - it is much nicier than previous versions and has already some WM6 features integrated.
Ok. So I need to downgrade my Device. to do the CID unlock.
Maybe the system firewall and some other settings are affecting the MTTY issue.
I checked the T-Mobile website for the newer German ROM version.
If I check https://after-sales-service.t-mobile.de/eg_online/t-mobile/t_mda_vario.htm (what my Device is) I only see the 2.21 version and NO newer version?
1.
Go to www.t-mobile.de
2.
Click on top on the menu "HILFE & FAQ"
3.
Select on that site "Broschüren & Software"
4.
Now click on the left site menu on "T-Mobile Software"
5.
It takes you to a new page and asks you for your MDA. Don't worry if your PDA is not in the list! Just choose any PDA. It will take you to a new page and show you the selected PDA. Right underneath you will see a link: "Model aendern" - click on that link and then chose as Manufacturer T-Mobile and you will find the MDA VARIO!
Sorry for being so complicate but the T-Mobile site is set up with Flash, so, you can't just copy the link! You always have to go the loooong way! Be aware that you have to temporarely allow popup's ... !
How ever,
I will try to paste the link here to the direct download and I hope it works:
http://www.t-mobile.de/downloads/t-mobile/ruu_vario_aku3.3_3822_382120_026911_tmo_de_ger_ship.zip
Hey the link works....
Thanks. I find out that my Device is a G4 device and I also see that I can't unCID this device... Right?
I'm a little bit in fear that something is going wrong during the Update to WM6 and I have no working Backup on my SD card.
Ok. So this steps I will do. Maybe you can currect me if I'm wrong.
1. I will perform a downgrade to the custom rom 1.05 and then I make a backup after running CID unlock.
2. I make a Backup with the MTTY
3. I will install the WM6
4. If not working I can backup from SD card and maybe install the newest ROM
You only should downgrade for CID unlocking your device! This is required for installing other ROMs than from your cell phone provider!
If you want to upgrade to the new german AKU3.3 from T-Mobile - that should work without CID unlock! You also should be able to downgrade to your existing ROM version in case you just dislike the new AKU3.3
BTW:
If you're planning to upgrade to a selfmade WM6 which you can find all over the web: I tried almost all of them! None was as stabile and good as the german T-Mobile AKU3.3! Sure, they look cute with their VISTA-style look but the functionality is far away from being perfect! Also: Lots of the ROMs are very user-personalized and contain no configuration for your network (such as GPRS and MMS) - my advice: stick to your provider ROMs, either AKU2 (which you're currently running) or the newer AKU3.3 from the link above - at least until you learnt flashing and registry hacking on your device!
WOW I allready can hack the Registry but having sometimes some issues with instructions here . Like I say before... I'm a little bit in fear...
Well, it is understandable! Noone wants to end up with a brick!
There is always a risk in flashing devices! I do it since years now and was unlucky only once by flashing a SIM locked ROM to a Motorola phone. Haven't had any problems since then. The best thing is READING and if you can't find answers just post your question. Next to it is always helpful to check also other Forums or try to find guides in your own mother tongue!
Hacking the registry is not really riskfully - at leat the only one thing what can happen is that your device won't start up and you might lose your files and data. Other than that you should be able in any case to get it running with a hard reset again by holding CON button and Voice Dial button at the same time and press Reset.
Flashing can destroy the device because of it actually erases everything in the device; even the ROM before it writes the new one. But even here you will be able to enter in BOOTLOADER mode in most cases.
Yeah thats right Junner. Reading and asking... Since I flashed my SDA wrong I'm happy to have a Backup on the SD card to get the Image back. If this is the case I'm happy.
I installed AKU 3.3 and it's looking good and working fine.
Maybe I will downgrade to the custom 1.05 and do a backup. I only want to look how the WM6 is looking.
Are you German? Or german speeking?
The ROM backup to SD card via MTTY should work without CID unlocking your device! There is no need to downgrade for that purpose. I had hard times by doing it too. It took me several trials until it worked finally!
The downgrade is only necessary if you're planning to install ROMs from other providers or ROMs in other languages. I asume you're german, so, if you don't believe anything I say - this you can believe: the german AKU3.3 is the best out there you can find for the WIZ
Like I mentioned earlier: all the WM6 ROMs you will find all over the web are user created! They are either taken off from other devices and changed around until they worked on the WIZ or just visual pepped up AKU3.3 ROMs (the one you installed now). Allthough, I did not find any WM6 out ther which did not have issues in one way or another ...
I speak a little bit german , yeah!
We have WURSTFEST here once a year with lots of Sauerkraut and beer ...
Mates, if I read my rom am i going to be able to copy it to pc and Dump it with a ROM Kitchen?
the sda-music, (or maybe sda only? how may i find out what device it is? its labeled "T-Mobile SDA" but seems to be the sda.music...) which is my girlfriends phone, produces many freaking errors lately.
so i decided, to not only hardreset the device, in fact i wanted to reflash the device with WM5 or 6 so there would be some nice software and feature additions.
But i read two posts, at least, that mentioned the authors device being bricked during flash-process...
now i wanted to know if the tornado is really that vulnerable.
and what is better flashing wm5 or wm6, is wm5 more stable and final than wm6?
i think the device is shipped with WM2003(se?).
is there any possibility to back up the existing rom and extrom (if there is one), to have the original rom anywhere backuped? (to reflash it, if anything isn't nice with wm5/6)
greetings
hoping for some answers.
