I have had my O2 XDA Exec for about 4 weeks now and it really is the business but!! I am having real problems connecting to my Pc using the supplied usb cable. I have also tried using other cables and still no connection. Sometimes it connects and is fine sometimes it connects and then dissconnects itself after a few moments and sometimes it just won't connect at all. Is there anyone else out there who has experienced this problem? Is my handset faulty? Please help.....
Disable ALL your firewalls before connecting your Universal to sync. In my case, I used to be able to sync even when my firewalls are all ON. But after trying the latest I-Mate upgrade, my Exec ALWAYS failed to connect to perform active syn if ANY of my firewalls are ON. Someone said he fixed this dillema by REFORMATTING the computer. But I am not willing to do this at this point, too much work. So I just turn OFF all my firewalls before I connect my EXEC for active sync to connect without any problems. I also found out BT active sync works fine even with the firewalls ON. So it is up to you to decide which way you want to go.
Thanks cktlcmd the fire walls on my Pc are off are there any on the XDA itself? Forgive the inexperienced newbie question...

YES, the firewalls on your PC are what I mwant. The Exec has no firewalls.

I've previously been connecting my Qtek 9090 to my computer fine.
I've just purchased the Imate Jasjar and need to transfer my contacts and diary across from the pc but I'm unable to do so.
I've been getting the message "one of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned and Windows does not recognize it, when connecting the device using the usb cable given in the box.
If you've got any possible solution it would really really help right now!
Are you using ActiveSync 4?
Yes I instaled activesynk 4 also. I forget to say that my pc sees jasjar as a local connection area 2 after a while connecting it to my pc.
Is this have something to do with some settings;
 Do your have a firewall / Anti-virus running on your pc? This, from experience has caused some connectivity issues in the past. If so, disable, connect your universal, then re-enable your firewall / Anti-virus.
i been having the same prob with AS4 and jasjar
ive tried turning off firewall and antivirs but still no connection..
by any chance was your imate jasjar bought off expansys???
mine was
thanks
You might want to verify that you are connected directly to the computer and not via a USB hub. I have had problems with WM5 devices connected to hubs not detecting properly, but direct connections worked.

hi
i use the usb ports of my laptop..no usb hub..
the only way i can sync is via BT
its wireless i agree but i need to use the cable aswell...
Well I bought mine also from expansys, Is this has something to do with my local area connection at home; Iam saying this because sometimes jasjar connects to my pc only as a local area connection 2. Then it can be synchronized by taking on and putting on the cable again. But this is not the wright way. Any ideas; Thanks
yeah.. same thing mine also conects as lan 2...
but never have i been able to get it to sync.. so could you please tell me more in detail if ever you got it synced,,if so how
thanks
Do you have any kind of VPN software installed on your laptop such as Checkpoint Secure Remote?
AS4 gave me no end of trouble at first with the same symptoms as yourself. I removed the VPN software and all of a sudden everything started to work properly.
hi
no i dont have vpn software..the only firewall i have is that of xpsp2 and the antivirus program i use is trendmicro pc-cillin/..ive tried with both of them off still no usb connection to activestink.... bt AS works no matter what
Have you try uninstall the Pc-cillin, reboot the machine then try again.
same **** here
List of issues:
-as4 will not see jasjar, spins forever
-----Solution, soft reset device, this has happens due to your last sync.
-Needs to resync everything - connection resets every second time almost
really very buggy

It's not enough to turn off antivirus and firewalls... you need to uninstall them...
Ok so I don't get this. BUy the device, install the software, choose what you want to sync and bang....it's done. Switch the computer off, go to bed, get up for work, come back from work, try to sync the device..."USB not recognised"???what on earth!!! Then O2 tell me I need to switch my firewall off...tried that, still not recognised. Anybody know how to Sync this bloddy thing?
plug the usb in with the phone off, works everytime for me, if phone is on i get that error.
failing that check yer firewall
sure that works, at least it recognizes it...but then it spends the rest of the time 'connecting' without really synching!!!
ok, it now works. It is a combination of plugging it in while the phone is off, and having the firewall disconnected. I suggested you make sure that you are not online though, cause you could be vulnerable. Thx anyhow!
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/help/activesync/default.mspx
check there out, much firewall info and how to disable firewall only on the activesync connection
I have to close my sygate firewall, syncronize and than I can resume firewall.
yer i have to do the same with my work machine, it uses corporate based firewall policies so when i vpn in all i have is connecting.......
same for bluetooth aswell as thats a LAN connection aswell, only thing i can have both vpn dialled AND AS connected is infrared, and when my lappy is in docking station the IR port is hidden.....
Hi, I had no problem at first with my own O2 mini s, but was unable to conect my wifes to the laptop (Dell inspiron 6000) so we were about to take it back as it would NOT connect at all (just the normal connect bleep then nothing). Just in case it was a problem with the rom install I rebooted it. Still no connection. Having read about the "basic" option on this board I also rebooted my device. mmmmmmmmmmm...... now that wont connect either!!! I have tried rebooting both devices and used the "personnel" options, still no joy??? If I open active sync on the laptop and try the "connect to device" option, i get a "no device found" message. Windows!............what a pile of crap! Anyone else had this problem or have any suggestions. regards, Pete
just found this!
http://www.modaco.com/ActiveSync_4_issuesl_Microsoft_want_to_help_-t230325.html
its an upgarde, problem sorted.
The aboce link fixes the problem with a download of Active sync 4.1
seems there are issues with some firewalls.
Both of our XDA mini s now connect via usb.
regards, pete

Didn't appear to fix mine it just sits there and says retrieving settings endlessly.
My Xda mini S connects to my laptop no probs, but it won't connect to my desktop. I have Sygate PF running and Windows Firewall. Windows firewall looks to have the right settings.

WHY DOSN'T Activesync work?????
I can put up with Activesync not working under VPC on my Mac but I CANNOT put up with it not Activesyncing with a brand new 2 month old IBM laptop running XP Pro and all the latest patches.
Is it the phone that is at fault or Microsoft or a combination?????
My old PDA2K Activesyncs fine on BOTH VPC and the IBM so why not this device?
Anyone PLEASE HELP ME.......
Robin
Are you using ActiveSync v.4.1?
If it is a Windows Mobile 5 device (Wizard, Universal) instead of a Windows Mobile 2003SE Device, you need a minimum version 4.1 of ActiveSync
Yup it is a Wizard and I am using AS 4.1.
I have tried Firewall on, off, VPN on, off.
I have de-installed and re-installed 4.1.
Still NOTHING.
The Laptop see's new hardware, says it has installed okay and then AS does NOTHING.!!!!!!!!
Robin
in my case it was the firewall
you sure both your windows and software firewall is off?
also check in network connections that your phone network connection is connected
what happens in activesync... errors? does it display its trying to sync ? just "it is not syncing" doesnt help
If the laptop sees the device as new hardware and not the actual device it means that you do not have active Synch 4.1 or that the installation was borked . because 4.1 includes the drivers for this phone to be recognized by windows.. so if you had 4.1 it would show your phone name and then it might not have worked , but not the way you are describing it now.
Also you might wanna put up a bit more objective title when posting something like this if you want psotive feedback instead of flamez...
very good point avocaz
totally missed the point that it does detect but possibly does not install which would be down the active sync 4.1 not being there

1. Certainly I turned off the Windows Firewall, don't know about any other Firewall. HOWEVER the fact my PDA2K can connect surely rules out a Firewall problem?
2. Don't know how to do this? I am a Mac user and am using XP JUST to sync my phone.
3. Nothing happens in Activesync. I get the normal, bing bong chime. but the AS icon does not turn green or open.
If I manually open AS and tellit to cennect it cannot find an attached PDA.
On the other hand if I attach my PDA2K I get the bing bong, the icon turns green, AS opens fine.
Is that clearer?
Is there any more info you need?

But surely the fact that when I connect my PDA2K AS 4.1 opens and works indicates it IS there and working?
If I check its version it says 4.1?
AS 4.1 is the first instal of AS on this machine, never had an earlier version on it.
Sorry about the title but I guessed I would at least get some response with it.
I am pulling my hair out here and don't want to return the phone but without a computer connection it is totally useless to me.
Robin
Its not your desktop. Its the AS client on the device itself that causes these problems. Apparently, the next ROM Update is supposed to fix all AS issues. Just hold on till mid-Jan.

Sounds reasonable HOWEVER if I cannot get the damn thing to connect to a PC I am never going to be able to laod the new rom to fix the problem it won't connect to a pc, so I won't be able to connect ot a PC ...........
I am losing it big time...
How would I install the update without a PC connection?
Robin
Use the wifi to download the rom ? Sorry your having problems but this phone definately doesnt stink. Havent put mine down since Christmas day .... the wife is definately not pleased. She keeps giving it daggers
Okay
My FIRST bit of success.
I found out my laptop has a IRD port and the phone HAS connected via this so it is most certainly a USB issue.
Now the question is can a rom update be done of IRD or does it need to be the USB connection?
Robin
PS WiFI download would not help as the rom needs to be loaded FROM a PC.
Just a thought, but are you connecting via a usb hub?
Best not to, and I find always using the same usb socket also helps...

Had the same problem.

Good luck,

DO NOT INSTALL ROM UPDATE VIA IR.
It should be done via USB ONLY. Thats one of the main instructions in the ROM update page that pops up on executing the RU file.
I had problems because of the ports. AS4.X needs a hand full of ports to communicate with the PPC, in my case TCP Port 990 was already in use.

HOw do I check this, I am not very PC Literate.
I am much more used to a Mac where things normally 'just work' :?
I have just noticed a couple of things following some of the Microsoft trouble shooting guide.
If I have AS open on the KJAM it shows the spinning green button and that it is trying to connect, still nothing on the PC end.
HOWEVER what I did notice on the PC end in Device Manager is that a Windows mobile-based device appears under netowrk connectors.
So SOME KIND of connection IS happening.
Robin
PS Many thanks for being a sounding board for me and your helpful ideas, it is very much appreciated, I just wish I was making more progress.
Let me set the record straight.
This phone does NOT stink. The more I use it the more I like it.
Certainly it is a big improvement over my PDA2K in size and usability.
HOWEVER I still cannot get it to connect to my laptop and I am getting so frustrated cause its the last thing left for me before I really start to LIKE this phone..............
Any more ideas out there because I have tried everything I can think of with no luck at all except via IRDA.

Hello
sometimes when i connect my xda to my pc through the USB cable, my XDA does start charging however the activesyn application shows "Not connected".
it is big pain since i then have to retart my pc and close all the applications that i have gotten going.
can you guys tell me to get the activesync to detect my xda always?
actually this time around i resarted my pc, and activesync is still not detecting my xda i have got activesync 4.0
hey, solved part of thep roblem
it was zone alarm, i installed activesync 4.2 and then found out that the pocket pc was detected but it could not access it.
can you guys tell me
1. how to get activeasynch to run with zonealarm still on (what filetr settings should i have on zonealarm)
2. activesync sometimes does not work after a session, (some sort of settngs need to be rest), and then i have to restart my pc and then activesync works again
Not able to connect with Activesync
I'm sorry to jump in, in the middle here but I do need help.
I am running XP prof and have an O2 xda exec (Called the HTC Universal I believe). I am trying to install Activesync 4.2 and indeed have also tried the 3.8 version. No luck at all. When getting to the stage where the Activesync installation program asks you to connect the XDA there is a reaction when plugging this in on the USB cable however it then says it can't detect it. I have switched off my firewall, still no luck. I desperately need Activesync to synchronise with my desktop and install software. Is there someone who could help please. Email [email protected] if anybody would be so kind. Happy Christmas everybody.
