Active Sunc 4,a firewall and the XDA Exec - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro General

Ok so I don't get this. BUy the device, install the software, choose what you want to sync and bang....it's done. Switch the computer off, go to bed, get up for work, come back from work, try to sync the device..."USB not recognised"???what on earth!!! Then O2 tell me I need to switch my firewall off...tried that, still not recognised. Anybody know how to Sync this bloddy thing?

plug the usb in with the phone off, works everytime for me, if phone is on i get that error.
failing that check yer firewall

sure that works, at least it recognizes it...but then it spends the rest of the time 'connecting' without really synching!!!

ok, it now works. It is a combination of plugging it in while the phone is off, and having the firewall disconnected. I suggested you make sure that you are not online though, cause you could be vulnerable. Thx anyhow!

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/help/activesync/default.mspx
check there out, much firewall info and how to disable firewall only on the activesync connection

I have to close my sygate firewall, syncronize and than I can resume firewall.

yer i have to do the same with my work machine, it uses corporate based firewall policies so when i vpn in all i have is connecting.......
same for bluetooth aswell as thats a LAN connection aswell, only thing i can have both vpn dialled AND AS connected is infrared, and when my lappy is in docking station the IR port is hidden.....

Problem connecting imate jasjar with pc, please help

I've previously been connecting my Qtek 9090 to my computer fine.
I've just purchased the Imate Jasjar and need to transfer my contacts and diary across from the pc but I'm unable to do so.
I've been getting the message "one of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned and Windows does not recognize it, when connecting the device using the usb cable given in the box.
If you've got any possible solution it would really really help right now!
Are you using ActiveSync 4?
Yes I instaled activesynk 4 also. I forget to say that my pc sees jasjar as a local connection area 2 after a while connecting it to my pc.
Is this have something to do with some settings;
 Do your have a firewall / Anti-virus running on your pc? This, from experience has caused some connectivity issues in the past. If so, disable, connect your universal, then re-enable your firewall / Anti-virus.
i been having the same prob with AS4 and jasjar
ive tried turning off firewall and antivirs but still no connection..
by any chance was your imate jasjar bought off expansys???
mine was
thanks
You might want to verify that you are connected directly to the computer and not via a USB hub. I have had problems with WM5 devices connected to hubs not detecting properly, but direct connections worked.

hi
i use the usb ports of my laptop..no usb hub..
the only way i can sync is via BT
its wireless i agree but i need to use the cable aswell...
Well I bought mine also from expansys, Is this has something to do with my local area connection at home; Iam saying this because sometimes jasjar connects to my pc only as a local area connection 2. Then it can be synchronized by taking on and putting on the cable again. But this is not the wright way. Any ideas; Thanks
yeah.. same thing mine also conects as lan 2...
but never have i been able to get it to sync.. so could you please tell me more in detail if ever you got it synced,,if so how
thanks
Do you have any kind of VPN software installed on your laptop such as Checkpoint Secure Remote?
AS4 gave me no end of trouble at first with the same symptoms as yourself. I removed the VPN software and all of a sudden everything started to work properly.
hi
no i dont have vpn software..the only firewall i have is that of xpsp2 and the antivirus program i use is trendmicro pc-cillin/..ive tried with both of them off still no usb connection to activestink.... bt AS works no matter what
Have you try uninstall the Pc-cillin, reboot the machine then try again.
same **** here
List of issues:
-as4 will not see jasjar, spins forever
-----Solution, soft reset device, this has happens due to your last sync.
-Needs to resync everything - connection resets every second time almost
really very buggy

It's not enough to turn off antivirus and firewalls... you need to uninstall them...

Why oh why is Activesync so awful??

Here I am, installing 4.1 for a third time....
Why is it so hard to make a stable connection utility? All I get now, no matter what I do re: firewall/connecting while off/rebooting/rerunning AS is "USB Device Not Recognized".
God I hates it.
I take it there is NO alternative to syncing my Outlook 2003 etc?
Yep, it's about as tempremental as a 3 year child.
I find best solution after that error is.
1 disconnect pc and universal
2 reboot both and let them finish starting
3 press power switch on universal to put it to stand by.
4 connect them
5 when universal awakes go to activesync and select sync.
Have you checked your firewall thoroughly?
This drove me crazy until I realized the firewall was blocking connection to the device.
Remember that with stoopid new activesync, which also conveniently removes wifi syncing, you are making a tcp connection to the device that requires a clear path through your firewall.

Was giving error even with firewall temporarily (!) turned off.
All sorted now, uninstall etc...
I gave up on USB and use Bluetooth only (works perfectly)
I gave up on trying to get USB to work with Activesync ... after several hours of frustration. I use the "Connect via Bluetooth" option and it has worked perfectly everytime, which is a great improvement of my XDAII. I hope this helps.
I used the newest german version on buzzdev.net
Connected immediately.
So i think it's the version,

Stop exchange sync when connected to PC?

I have my 8525 setup to sync my calendar and contacts with my work exchange server. It works fine unless I connect my phone to my home PC and ActiveSync tries to sync it. I suspect the exchange server is setup to recognize mobile devices and not allow a non mobile device to connect.
Is there anyway to prevent the sync when connected to the PC and leave it enabled for getting it's own updates through it's own data connection?
Or is there a fix to let the PC successfully connect?
Turn off or uninstall ActiveSync on the home computer?
Can you just uninstall or turn off the ActiveSync app on your home PC? If you turn off the 'Start when Windows starts', it should stay off until you decide to open it on your own. The phone should still charge and that is the reason I am assuming you are plugging it in to your home PC. Just my 2cents.
Also depends upon DNS etc.
E.g. I have exchange server on local LAN, but use DynDNS to access it over the internet.
So, entry for my phone is mydomain.dyndns.org (or whatever). Thing is, when you plu the phone a PC on the LAN at home, it tries to resolve mydomain.dyndns.org, which of course it does, and ends up with my external internet address.
I solved this by putting an entry mydomain.dyndns.org in the hosts file of the PC I use to connect the phone, pointing to the LOCAL LAN address of the exchange server.
Hope that makes sense.
Could, of course, be irrelevant for you tho
Actually, I have just re-read your orginal post where you mention "Work Exchange Server" so what i have said is indeed probably irrelevant.

I do use ActiveSync on my PC on occasion to install/remove software.
I am not aware of any way to deactivate it though. I could of course remove it from startup applications but once you launch it you cannot shut it down easily.

Exactly.
The issue is work exchange and home PC.
Oddly though, I do not remember having this problem on my 8125. Perhaps I did have it and just do not remember.
Is there a way to stop the device from using the PC internet connect and force it to use it's own radio? I suspect this is not the device so much as it is ActiveSync on the PC side.
Is it a known issue that the exchange server is looking at the connecting device to determine if it is indeed a mobile device? The exchange server domain is listed as mobile.mydomain.com where our normal remote access exchange domain for Outlook Web Access would be mail.mydomain.com making me think it is specifically setup for Windows Mobile devices and it does some detection of the device type.
I do not seem to be able to setup different sync settings on the PC than on the device as they update to the other when connected.
Others must have this problem as well but I have not seen any other threads on it yet.
I'm just guessing here...
maybe you can try to erase your device from your home pc and stablis a new partnership again, but this time when the options apear, choose to sync nothing, I mean disable the sync options in ActiveSync at your home...
or set the new partnership as guest, this way the PPC wont try to sync but will let you explore or install programs.
If I understood rigth, you dont neet to sync info with your home pc, just instal programs or explore the PPC
edit: also, in Connection Settings in activesync put a checkmark in "allow wireless connection..." just to let your phone have a GPRS connection while attached to your pc.
Hope it could help.

Mablan
I cannot find an "Allow wirelessconnection" option in ActiveSync. I am running the version released a couple of months ago for the DST fix.
I think not plugging into the PC to charge may be the way to go and either plug into another PC without ActiveSync or into the AC charger. I was thinking about getting a cradle though and that would be a nuisance.
Would this same issue occur if I were using BlueTooth to sync with the PC? I wonder.
I also frequently have problems if the 8525 is left plugged into the computer overnight. It will sometimes lock up on me so that I cannot turn it on and have to soft reset, or it will seem to be working until I try and make a data connection and find that it will not connect and also requires a soft reset. This is a major nuisance when I am playing audio through a BT connect in my car and realize I cannot connect data and have to reset. The BT connect in my car is NOT automatic and I have to go to Com Manager/Settings/Bluetooth Settings/Devices then I have to Top/Hold on my Scosche adapter and select Set as Wireless Stereo. This is difficult to do while driving. Might have to look for a different BT receiver for the car as this is a nuisance that does not exist in my HT820 headset.

In Activesync...open File menu, then choose Connection Settings, a pop up window will open, in that window the last option is the one that has to be checked...
Also, if you connect your device to PC in home only for charging it, then I think the option of conect as guess is a good opction...

Are you getting an error message?
Try browsing the internet while connected to the PC. Its often an XP firewall/security issue. I had the same problem with one of my PCs. Installing AS 4.5 fixed it.
Hope that helps you.

Man I am pissed I can get my Dual to talk to my PC

Everytime I try and sync my Dual I get the messge "To synchronize this device, you must install Activesync 4.5 or newer on your desktop computer". I have been all over the internet looking for a solution but nothing works. I have installed the newest version of Mobile Device Center and updated, unchecked the usb to pc box under connections, nothing works. Can someone plese help me out.
which OS are you using in your desktop pc?
worth a try
1/turn on the speaker volune of your pc + make sure in connecton setting allow usb setting is ticked
2/connect the phone do you hear a sound on connection?
3/does connecting the phone open up the software? if so what happens next?
4/do you have a firewall installed on your pc if so switch it off and try and reconnect the phone this is only for syncing if you are going to use internet sharing then switch back on the firewall/antivirus as it will not affect the network connection
5/if you want to sync with the firewall switched on go to the manufacture of your firewalls(i.e mcfee/norton) website and under support you will find configuration info relating to activesync and firewall software, otherwise do a google search for configuring active sync with your firewall (i.e norton, mcfee)
6/if still no luck try installing the active sync software on another pc and try syncing
7/ what operating system are you using
Yes, check your firewall settings. Had the same problem with NOD.
well i couldnt get it to sync so i just said screw it and reformatted my laptop then did all updates then tried to sync and it worked fine.

ActiveSync not working (all of a sudden)

Hi All
I searched the Forum but couldn't find a solution to this problem.
1. Came back form holiday yesterday - synced up my HD" with Outlook no problem
2. Tried to do it this morning. By the normal 'connect PC' option didn't come up and activsync icon didn'tr light up on PC
3. Rebooted HD2 and PC..no change
4. Tried to repair/reinstall activ sync, but towards the end of the repair it says 'there was a network error reading from file 'setup/msi'. Guessing that the file may be corrupt, I downloaded it again..same problem..so I can't repair or reinstall
5. There is definitely a connection of some sort as the HD2 begins to charge when connected
Bottom line is that the HD2 is not syncing - and I can't figure out why not.
Any advice appreciated...
Thanks
Do you have a Norton (Symantec) firewall installed? I’ve found that the Norton product can interfere with ActiveSync.
Active Sync not working
Good point..but no. I have AVG installed (and everything was working OK yesterday)
Spooky thing is, I have managed to uninstal, reinstal and reboot..and it still won't show that it's connected with AS even though there is a connection of some kind, cos the device is charging.
Steve
ActiveSync is just a bit crap. It'll do this occassionaly, so if you use it a lot then get used to it.
A restart of the phone, whilst the USB cable is not plugged in, usually does the trick. Only plug it in again when it's fully started.
Also, try setting the AS connection to not allow USB connections, unplugging and plugging back in, and then setting it to once again allow USB connections.
Just messing with it like that usually works for me. Like I said, it's just a bit crap.
Activ Sync
Yeah, I seem to recall I had this problem a while back - I'll faff around with the settings and see if it makes a difference

Well if johncmolyneux's suggestions don't work then try disconnecting your phone from the PC, restarting both, disconnecting the PC from the network, disabling the firewall element of AVG (if it has one) and then connecting the phone to the PC again.
If that doesn't work I can only suggest removing ActiveSync, totally shutting down your PC, starting up, then re-installing ActiveSync.
I had a similar problem but I was able to narrow it down to Norton in the end but it's a real pain when you don't know why it won't work.
Good luck with this.
I also occasionally was not able to connect with Active Sync, but rebooting the HD2 always fixes that issue. You said that this did not helped you, so try messing with the settings on Active Sync, like johncmolyneux said, also try when plug the usb cable into the device by default it asks you what kind of connection you're establishing (Active sync, data transfer and internet sharing) - try using data transfer, if it connects, unplug and connect it again, this time use active sync.
Reinstall activsync and Try to disable faster data Synchonization on HD2
Active Sync not working (solved)
That'll teach me to not check the obvious! - It turned out that the cable had developed a fault. I changed the cable and it's now OK.
Case closed.
