WHeres best to install progs. Card or Phone ?? - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario General

I got an XDA Mini S and a 1GB Mini SD card.
I was wondering, im putting on VJPhonetools, Papyrus, Pocketbreeze, Smartkeys, Phoneprofiles along with a shed load of MP3's etc. and want to know which will run quicker :
1. Progs on the phone and MP3's on the card
2. Progs and MP3's on the card.
3. Some progs on the phone and the other progs on the card along with the MP3's?
Ta
P.S, how do i get CAPNOTIFY to run, i have it on my XDA but when i click it nothing happens !!!

1.
Some programs don't run well from memory card - any kind of hack (like smarkskey) should be installed on phone, some other programs can be installed in the card without problems. Since phone storage memory and RAM are not shared in WM5 (like they were in 2003SE) you can get away with installing a lot on the phone. MP3s and such are fine to install on memory card. Might get some problems with jerky video/audio (never experienced this myself) but nothing major.

how to choose what programs are installed after hard reset?

hi all,
am new to all things pocket pc so have been having lots of fun over the past few weeks with my new orange SPV M500. Have been trying out lots of diferent apps etc and generally playing around! anyway my 1 gig sd card finally arrived today so i decided to hard reset m device and start over.
however i did the soft reset after the hard reset method to stop all the orange software from loading. However i have noticed that some of the orange software is actually quite usefull! so my question is can i somehow select what software get automatically loaded instead of putting it all back on? also can it be downloaded to the sd card instead of the internal memory? finally can i install all my programms like spb pocket plus, tom tom and wisbar advance to my sd card now?
many thanks,
Tom
Since this sounds like when you don't load the external ROMs (at least that's what it is on my QTEK) once you have soft reset you should have a directory (under windows) on your pocket PC.
This directory will have the CAB files that would have been installed had you not reset. All you have to do is go through and figure out which are which are run those (by clicking on them).
I did this before as I needed the MMS client and phonepad but not the called id.
Hope that helps,
M.
Oh yeah the directory is called "External ROMs"
tomtom yes thats fine on the SD card... but Pocket Plus and Wisbar i would leave on the phone main memory.

Better place to install TomTom5...

Hai guys!
Where do you have installed TomTOm 5 on your Jam?
I don't know if is better to install it on memory card, on RAM or on ROM....
Obviusly the maps on SD...
But the app?
I install everything on SD. (need to modify the registry to move the voice file to SD) So far so good.
can you indicated datail
I do install to the SD but it still intalled some files in main memory
I moved the files menually and modifiy the registry for the modified path
I installed all of it to the ROM (did the bigstorage rom hack), except for the maps which are on SD.
Install into RAM at all costs. Why? Because internal ROM and SD-Cards are way slower then internal RAM, youll slow down the speed of programs quite a lot. Using a Qtek S110 with 128MB RAM this is no problem at all but even on my old iPAQ 5450 with only 64MB RAM is was easily possible leaving 32MB for program exection.

I agree RAM is the fastest one but I don't think putting everything on SD has any noticeable performance hit to run TT5 at all (it does takes more time to load, that's it). In fact, I always run TT5 + IGuidiance 2.1 + BetaPlayer all at once without performance problem. I don't want to spend extra $$$ to upgrade to 128mb and I rather save more ram to run more programs by all the tricks. (I do manage to get 35-40 mb free with many programs installed)

Since we have to put the maps to SD anyway, I won't put the program to rom. Instead, I use my bigstorage for DLLs to save ram (by memmaid) and programs that still have to run even I need to swap the SD. Examples are:
1. Resco file explorer
2. betaplayer
3. Softick card export II.
4. Cyberon VoiceCommander (or MS Voicecommand)
5. Resco picture viewer

WM5, Vario and Memory management

Hi
Hope you can help me. I've had my Vario for a few weeks now, but i'm concerned about the way the memory is managed. I know about WM5 and the memory thing, but still I can't make sense of this:
Looking at my memory status, I've got 15.94 MB free on the storage memory, and only 2.39MB free on the programme side.
Currently running applications include:
pocket informant
and that's it!
i installed AvantGo, Pocket informant, Egress RSS reader, Phm registry editor, mortPlayer, O2Plus, total Commander, Spb GPRS, Clear Notify, real one, psShutXp and A-Z pock3et viewer. Some of these apps are installed on my storage card, and none of these are currently running, with the exception of a couple of today plugins.
How on earth can I go down to 2.39MB free programme memory ?
What would you advise to increase it?
I tried earlier to install AvantGo on the storage card, but it was not a success, as the system seems to shut power to the storage card occasionally (once a week?), leading to the miniSD being renamed storageCard2 when it restores power and access to it -which means shortcuts to programmes installed on the card are disabled unless you soft-reset the device.
Am I doing anything wrong? How can I increase my free programme memory?
Put it like this, applications installed on the memory card or in unlocked extendedROM's still seem to deplete storage on device. For example I put SPB pocket plus in my Extended ROM folder and then decided to delete it, as it remioved itselef, Storage went up by 1 meg. It wasn't even supposed to be in Storage so there is obviously 'cross contaminaton' of files to make certain progs work. You can run GPRS SPB from Storage cards tho. On my device I have MS Voice command 1.5, SPB GPRS monitor, HFR Switch programme, Wififofum, Resco Explorer,Tweaks 2K,Mort Player, a different dialpad skin,an Ext Rom unlocker, Pocket TV and a Draughts (checkers) game. I have 22.2 in Program Memory and 41.3 in Storage. The only other thing I don't have that you might have is some of the T-Mobile plugins and customisation and I don't have the PDF viewer.

Programms where to install...

So whats the best storage for install programms ? Which Programm should be on SD Card and which on Telephone ?
like TT6, any SPB, any SBSH, Resco......
What do you have where installed ???
I install any apps that have today plugins or that I use all the time on the device. Any other apps like satnav etc go on the card.
unwired4:
Thanks for your information...
tried tt6 on the card and on the tytn. there seems to be fewer lock ups if installed on the machine. I agree witht he today plugins comment but I think it simply depends on the software. some of the older stuff only works without freezing if directly installed on the machine. if you remove the card or hot swap with another then you get even more problems

Definitely agree on that. Any fixes for your OS should go to main memory as well.

It's worth doing I filled my 8gb and now I'm using a 16gb card. I went for a Duracell card after doing some research - they are reliable and have good chips.
System applications on the phone memory and other apps and games on memory card (mine is 16gb since it came with TMOUS)
wow.. stock 16gb? dat nice....
