WMStorage 1.3 (turns your smartphone PDA into a USB Drive) - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario General

Please note that this has been taken from:
http://www.modaco.com/WM5torage-t238545.html
Version 1.3 attached here!
Version 1.3
- added prompt to soft-restart the device after installation
- when storage is attached to USB host, mobile device USB controller and flash disk are ordered to be kept in "Power On" state
- added switch to choose between "Removable" and usual ("Hard Disk") device classes. Will affect how the host OS treats the device - for instance, it will not create System Restore and Recycle Bin if class is Removable.

I wonder when it will actually work on my MDA.

ady - this is an update from a previous version - though yes, would've been better placed in one of the 5 billion other threads
mr_skot - which MDA do you have? It's been reported to work just fine on the Wizard, which is an MDA Vario

I use CardExport for this....the latest version works great.
What is the difference between this program and Card Export?
Or do the both do the same?

Hint: How much did you pay for cardexport?
Another hint: What's the difference in size between the programs?

PocketPC JAM as a USB drive- WinXP?

Hi all,
My first post here...
Is it possible for PCs (Windows XP) to recognise the JAM as a removable USB drive in My Computer without installing the active sync software? I could make good use of my 1GB SD card if this is possible.
Any information is much appreciated.
Thanks.
No
Unfortunately it's only possible @ WM2005 and thats not gonna work with our little machines. (Yes I'm a little pesstimistic  )
yup tried WM2005 and it works! hehehe!
One would consider certain things as 'essential' must haves- maybe a subject view.
So there's absolutely nothing that can be updated in WM2003 to allow to do this??
P.S. What devices are running the WM2005 edition?
I think you should develop some piece of software by yourself
I've searched many hours and there is no one who can make it run.
(doesn't mean it's impossible )
Well, is it really that neccessary? You can use ActiveSync on your home computer and bluetooth or IR for file exchanges on other computers (when they have a bluetooth or IR adapter). Usually, you don't have the cable with you anyway, do you? For the few cases where you still really need it, you can download ActiveSync and install it. No big deal, is it?
It will be much easier because you don't need a USB memory stick anymore. But when you use the same computers (Work, home) then it's no problem to install Activesync
Ok, i get the point - but still, you need the cable which you don't always carry with you. Also, you can use it like a (very slow) USB stick when using IR or BT.
There are 're-coiling' usb cables that fit on your keyring/pocket...
For me it's all about having one unit do many things- the JAM/Magician is very close to doing that.
I am using the Norton Commander clone called "Servant Salamander" http://www.altap.cz/
This file manager has a plugin that allows one to copy and manage files directly on the device -- very conveniently!
frax,
Would I be correct in saying that this application has to be installed on the PC for file transfer to be performed? If this is the case then using ActiveSync is the same thing no?
yep, it is more or less the same thing. I think it is actually using activesync for the interface, so that needs to be installed as well.
There's an application called Softick Card Export that allows you to do just this. www.softick.com
When you install it it puts a system icon in the bottom right of the today screen where you can select either activesync or card modes. In card mode it works just like a memory stick (with the SD card only readable).
Ive been using it for a few weeks now and it works a treat on all xp machines that I've tried - doesn't need activesync (at least not in xp) and is much quicker than copying through activesync.

I'll just confirm that. It works great! And like fishes234 says, it transfers files at USB1.0 speed. ActiveSync is so slow compared to USB1 (lol i'm not going to mention USB2)

Universal to be recognized as a USB Mass Storage in Windows

Read this article:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/wceintro5/html/wce50conWhatsNew.asp
It confirms that WM5 has the USB Mass Storage driver built in, means without any additional software, we can use the storage card in WM5 device just like a USB pen drive/external HDD. This is very useful to connect the device in PCs without ActiveSync installed.
Does anybody know how to make the Universal to be recognized as a USB Mass Storage in Windows OS?
The DLL usbmsfn.dll is missing from the Exec's ROM - without that you'll not have much joy me thinks.
Hopefully much faster to
With no wifi support in activesync this may be much faster.
I find it a real pain transfering video files to my mda pro over activesync so slow
Can it be ripped from the device emulator or someone else's WM5 ROM?
RE
Does the Universal requires hardware-ready for USB hosting besides the necessary drivers?
No, pls don't be confused with USB host capability.
This is not related to that. The USB Mass Storage function is basically the capability to emulate the Universal so that when its plugged to a USB port of a PC, the PC will recognize the Universal as if its an external harddrive/USB pen drive/card reader.
If you use an external harddrive/USB pen drive/card reader to transport files you should be familiar with this. The benefit is that you do not need any driver for the drive to be recognize by Windows OS (starting W2k).
I myself, everytime I want to copy big size files like MP3 or movie to my Universal, I will take out the SD Card and insert it to the card reader then copy the files as its slightly faster to do so rather than using the ActiveSync.
The idea is that, with the USB Mass Storage driver that is built into the WM5, we do not need to take out the SD Card and use a card reader anymore. Just plug in the Universal and the PC can access the storage card directly with full speed.
Though this is definetely WM5 feature, but not really sure if this is implemented in Universal specifically. If anybody knows, please share.

Hate to burst bubbles, but the originally referenced article is taking about Windows CE5, not Windows Mobile5. While WM5 is built out of WCE5, it does not support everything that the underlying OS does or can. WCE5 is a base OS that a number of products are based on including WM devices like SmartPhones and PPC, and automotive electronics and even vending machines. At this point I know of no native mass storage capability in a WM5 device. Not to say it can't happen, as Softick provided the capability for WM2003 devices. It's just not that way out of the box.
A laconic mail exchange with Softick told me that they are actually working on their cardexport product for full WM5 compatibility. No release date, no progress for now. Maybe if somebody want's to ask more?

Tested Working on Universal.
WOW. This is good news!
after installing it, the device hangs. I unplugged it and reset it manually. And it works. Really cool! I noticed the speed is not as fast compared to a card reader. Anyway, I'm happy that now I do not need to carry around additional thing, SD card reader, just to transport files.

Sweet Software....
I install it (2.10), it keeps staying at the display when it is loading the bar and then it says that it cannot load it self...
Afterwards it uninstalls automatically...
I have Qtek ROM...
I've installed it and it works great on my Qtek 9000 (Universal). I only turn on de mass storage when i really need it, but then it works great to tranfer files from and tot every PC (no ActiveSync install needed).
I am trying to install V2.10 on my Universal and get the following:
On installation an error:
"ActivateDeviceEx" and "Cannot Load Drivers\BuiltIn\CE2. Code 2"
The install then says "Cannot Start Card Export" and "Card Export Installation Failed" and uninstalls itself.
Did a registry search and cant find any reference to that in the regisrty.
Anyone with any ideas or if they have that in their reg can they post the details!
Cheers!

Ameo Micro Drive.....Perfect Now..Thanks Wu5262!!

Absolutely brilliant news (as far as I'm concerned).
Thanks to fellow member wu5262 for looking after his software so well and keeping it, he e-mailed anyone needing the file in question 'WM5torage'.
See attachment for upload.
This bit of software literally turns the Athena (as well as most other WM5 devices) into a mass storage device allowing one to transfer files directly to your SD card or Micro drive, as it will be recognized as a Drive on your PC.
It simply works wonderfully and completely eliminates the need to use the slow and unreliable ActiveSync application to simply move files from the PC to the device.
I was having problems moving large files in this manner via Activesync (AS) to the Micro Drive (MD) and AS would not cope with it on my Ameo but it works fine on the Dopod U1000, implying that the ROM on the Dopod variant is considerably better put together than others. Wu has had no major problems with his device since he got it.
I can now report that I have no issues with the UK version of the Ameo whatsoever!!
Using WM5torage, one can very easily transfer huge files directly to the MD. I just moved 2.4 GB of movies (3 DVD rips - my own legal copies ) in about 12 minutes!!
So no problems with the MD speed in this regard. I've also tested the movies and there is no corruption..everything works flawlessly!
Instructions on how to do it:
1) Download the attached WM5torage.cab...either directly to your device or any other way you want.
2) Install the cab to 'Device' and softe reset straight after.
3) Now to find the file;
Go to...My Device\Program Files\WM5torage.....there it is!
Good time to make a shortcut and place it somewhere more logical!
4) Copy the file from the folder and go to....My Device\Windows\Start Menu\....
Now click the menu button...bottom right corner of the screen...and select 'edit' ...then paste shortcut...rename the file 'WM5torage' (otherwise it will always say "shrtcut to WM5torage") that's it...we're good to go!
5) Finally return to the start menu and you should see it there...WM5torage!!
Connect your USB lead to PC & Ameo/Athena. Don't worry if Active sync says error or even connects...just shut down any pop-up messages or Active sync.
6) On your device under your start menu, Simply click WM5torage (it will say 'Inactive' - hence the reason why nothing happens when you plug your USB lead into the device and PC)...and select Activate.
Immediately your PC should start to recognize your USB mass storage device....be patient and then a window will show up as if you had plugged in a USB device or inserted a memory card into your PC.
You can check what device has now been recognized as a drive under 'My Computer' on your PC.....it'll say something like L:drive or similar depending on your PC's configuration.
Happy fast transferring.
Don't forget to 'Deactivate' WM5torage when your finished otherwise Active Sync might not recognize your device the next time you want to sync with your PC.
Let us know how you got on.
All thanks to wu5262...Cheers mate.

So you are going to use card reader to transfer file? I would love to see how you can plug the Micro Drive in the Card Reader !!
Goodness me..I just realized you haven't even got your Athena yet...so you couldn't possibly understand why I posted this 99% garbage post.
Apply that remaining 1% to your existing 1% of intelligence...you'll need it for the Athena. Sorry for calling you names just now..din't know at the time that you were retarded.

Hi wu, I remember using the following Registry Settings on my Terminal Services and this was the only way I could get a reasonable speed on it.
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Terminal Server Client]
"BitmapPersistCacheSize"=dword:0000000A
"BitmapCacheSize"=dword:000005DC
"Keyboard Layout"="00000409"
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Terminal Server Client\Default]
"BitmapCachePersistEnable"=dword:00000001
Also I definitely agree with you! Crossbow and WM5 Terminal Services are way too different! Crossbow is awesome for this!I hope this helps!

What size of the SD-card is supported with Helmi's WM6 for BA?

Hi,
what is the size of your SD-card that you are using with your WM6 BA?
Does Helmi's ROM support up to 4GB card?
I'm asking because I'd like to buy a new one - preferable 4GB.
Thanks in advance
Phily
BA supports standard SD cards not the SDHC.
So if you manage to get more than 2gb on a regular SD card that would work.
I guess that there is one company that make 4g regular SD cards.
I have 4GB card (Platinum brand) that is not SDHC and works fine in BA. Ideal for multiple navigation systems.
I think Transcend have 4 GB card that is reported to work in ba
(I have not tryed it)

teddybear3k: have you tried? I go for xplode and say, that it's not possible.
Not possible until skilled programmer rewrite the SD Bus driver
SDHC
what about this? (WARNING THIS HP offers warez aswell, but following links are, so far I know, to free ware! So please do not warn, kick or ban me for this links.)
Page Link -- http://myppc.ru/2007/09/14/sdhc_driver.html
File Link -- http://myppc.ru/uploads/files/myppc.ru-1881_sdhc.rar
Is it the same? I would like to install it, but I'm aware, if it could scratch my device....
The given page actually is a good newsticker for PPC programs, I like it even more, than HPC.ru
if this cab should work, then even SDHC Cards with more then 32GB should probably work aswell....
wfg. - Mihail
Mihail: on the list there is NO BlueAngel. Installing it won't kill your device, you will just loose SD card access (and you will need to reverse the operation or make hard reset to get back the access).
We need SD driver made especially for BlueAngel.
List only tells,
on which devices this driver was already applied! Not for which devices it is maid!
That's why!
Mikhail: test it and report. Make backup before and prepare for HR.
Test to 50%
O don't have any SDHC cards! So I could only test, if this cab allows to use SD-Cards, not more... but I will do it!
HTC driver - but not BA
Is not working for BA.... and I'm not a progger (and for shure not a disassembler/hacker) to change this.
So you just confirmed what we said. Please confirm it on your own before publishing any new "breakthru" news.
sd bus driver
Does any one you think that it is possible to use the bsquare development kits to build support for higher/faster sd cards for blue angel?
If you had source code for the SD reader driver and knew how to update it to support SDHC (by hand probably) yes, this is doable with ANY devkit. Without this you are left with desassembling and analysing it in assembler/C.
sd card
hmm i am a high level programmer. (But I like to dive into the subject for giving something back to this community) (I can program in C but have never build a driver before) (Assembly is far beyond my scope) Though I have some good system programmers in my business environment. I will post my findings in this thread and maybe it's a good idea to change the direction of this thread to making this possible (and the way to doing it) instead of asking which is the max card working on the blue angel. Making the BA take advantage of the new generation SD cards is IMHO a very important step.

Use the volume slider on the left side. Push it down a couple times to get a barely audible volume. If the conversation is going to extend for more than a few sentences, I usually just ask them to hang on and grab my headset.

Use Sprite Backup (provided on the Athena software CD) prior to hard-reset, restore afterwards.
For mass USB storage, you may want to take a look at WM5torage version 1.71 (and not later !), which is free and a regular "must-have" for PocketPCs.

version 1.73 is also okay, but not later.
I'd suggest this, from the Athena Mobile 6 subforum:

Card Reader mode is good - I've found it a lot more reliable than any version WM5torage, and there's also a Turbo Activesync mode, once you've pointed Windows at the driver, that is a LOT faster than standard Activesync for file copying.
no luck...put into turbo mode..starts copying...progress bar goes till 2 blocks,,then again goes blank..
