I have a T-Mobile MDA, and am about to hard reset it to wipe out all TMO customizations. I know how to prevent the extended rom from loading after the hard reset, but what I don't know is what, if anything, I need to install out of the ext rom, and in what order they should be installed if it matters. Also, are there programs from other extended roms that should be installed in place of the TMO customizations?
Thanks.
i have the latest qtek rom installed, without extended rom oder customizations. i personally don't need anything of this trash from T-Mobile or any other provider. they don't intigrate useful tools or settings, they only do good work in making the device as unusable as possible
Consider new ROM
If you are doing this, you might consider the new ROM for T-Mobile,

I haven't done this yet, and I am skeptical of claims of increased speed (one gets those from hard resets which clear out junk in the registry) but people are pretty happy with it.

Hi , I really need help from you guys here. I got a used dopod900 set, but when i boot up it shows O2 logo instead. meaning its actually dopod 900 with O2 rom. Well it actually do not bother me that much, but when I did a hard reset, it seems to me something is really wrong. I could no longer see SIM MANAGER, or things like Auto Config and some other programs. I can see that the rom is the latest i have but then i could not see the ver of the ext rom on the device.
I tried unlocking the ext rom with buzz's tool and it say success but I can's see it anywhere in the device even if I install Total Commander on it and also not able to see the ver of the ext rom too. I know something must be wrong somewhere. I did a hard reset as per what the manual says and follow through, and when its customizing the device automatically i can see there are installations like installing autoconfig....simmanager.. and even dopodasia.. and so on. But i don see anything on the programs listing or anywhere in the devices that these programs are around. So i wonder what happen. When i launch IE the first time i got the set i was about to see Dopod on the IE page, but after the hard reset it now shows 'Mobile Operator" and "OEM" I am still able to use the device nomally. but if when i need to do a hard reset it will be very tedious on me as I need the sim Manager to read my SIM data, presently i am learing the hard way of keying it manually.
I hope experts here will guide me through. Thanks!
Just download the ROM of your choice and flash it to that ROM.. problem all fixed.
The rom is already the most updated one. do i still need to download the rom? whether is a o2 rom or dopod 900 rom does not really matters to me that much, but at least all the major applications are able to use.
Well it sounds like your extended ROM was removed or not installed or whatever, and I take it you want it back. Flashing a new ROM (doesnt matter version) will put everything on.
Ok i still in the process of reading various threats regarding ROM backups.
Can someone please clarify the differences between the three kind of ROMS:
WINCE ROM
Radio ROM
Extended ROM
As far as i can tell the WINCE is self explanatory -- its the OS
Which one of the rest 2 ROMS hold the settings of the provider.
E.g. If i want to upgrade my device to WM6 and want to reload the settings of my provider which one of the two i will have to use?

The radio ROM does what it says on the tin - it controls the radio.
The extended ROM is about 10Mb of memory used by the carriers for configuration / customisation information. It is usually programmed to autorun after a hard reset so that the customisation files in there can be processed first. For example, with O2 UK, the customisation puts in the GPRS/3G/locale settings, makes the Uni look pretty (if you don't use corporate mode) at the expense of it being very slow indeed!
If you empty the extended ROM, you then have 10Mb which you can use for storage / running progs. I run TomTom 6 and various other key apps from there with no difficulties.
The only downsides are if for some reason you need some particular form of customisation installed by your carrier. I have happily dispensed with all of the O2 customisation and all I have to do when I hard reset (after a new ROM) is to reinstall the O2 GPRS/MMS settings, which takes about thirty seconds.
If you do empty the extended ROM, bear in mind that it will be re-locked whenever you change the main ROM so you will need to unlock it again. Also, one of the unlocking progs around also wipes the Extended ROM - there is another (which you will find somewhere on this site) which only unlocks it.

Thanks for the clear explanation!!!!

heya,
today i decided to remove some files from my extended rom, but i ****ed up a bit and ended up emptying my whole extended rom, i did back my extended rom up, but when i pasted the backup into extended_rom all i got was alot of strange icons and maps in my extended rom, also filesys is now taking up all my cpu usage (but i guess this has to do with those strange files?) :S
the problem is i can't delete those files cause they are read only, i can't change the read only extension either.
i'm running on wm5
has anyone got a suggestion for me to solve this problem? if needed i can provide screenshots of how my extended rom looks or additional info...
i would be very very very happy if someone could help me, because i am quite pissed now because it won't work.
Greetings and thanks in advance!
Unless someones figured out how to actually unlock the extended rom on a wizard lately and I just haven't read about it, you haven't actually done anything to your extended rom, it only looks like it. When you add files to it or remove them it only looks like it for some reason. Those files are locked. If you do a soft reset and look at the files again, I'm pretty sure they'll all be back to the way they were. As far as I know, the only way you can change those files at all is to flash a new extended rom.

hm, sounds pretty logical, but the problem is, even if i soft reset, or even hard reset my device, the extended rom still looks the same :S and filesys keeps using 100% cpu all the time, wich drains my battery quite fast, so i guess i really screwed something up, even tho the extended rom might be fine :S
edit* when i perform a soft reset the extended rom appears to be empty, but i can't paste my old rom back into it and filesys still uses 100% cpy, wich i think is related to waht i did to the extended rom.
If you're using a service providers ROM (i.e. T-Mobiles ROM or whoever your service provider is) just go download their official ROM from their website and reflash it to your phone. That will rewrite your extended ROM back to the way it was and you should be ok after that.

thanks, i'll try!
hm, i have a t mobile nl device, but i can't find the extended rom installer on the t-mobile site, what i did find is a rom update, wich i will install as soon as my battery is above 50%
All you will find is the rom update, they don't have just an extended rom installer. The rom update is going to replace all of the files installed on your phone including the extended rom.
thanks alot bro! it works, i can't tell you how happy i am, really, thank you very much!
No problem, glad it worked for you.
i have a mda vario II , its at wm6 now, with a basic rom, i want to update it to the schaps rom, because the things i hear about are really good, i want to try it, 3 questions
1 do i lose my data, (sms data, contacts enz)
2 can something happen so my phone wont work anymore?
3 where can i download the newest dutch schaps rom
my english is not that good, im dutch....
oh yea, another question, do you get your garantee if you send it back to tmobile?
1. yes
2. possible - install hard SPL V7 1st to reduce risk.
3. Do a search to find if its available.
No, you need to put the Stock rom and SPL back on.
thanks for your answers, but can i make a backup with spb backup for example?
and do my programs on the sd micro card still work?
Yes, just don't format the card. Leave it as is and everything should install as it was before. I know SPB backup has 5 trial backup/restores so you may be able to try it without purchase (I have a licenced copy so I don't know if any limitations have been imposed other than the 5 trial backups).
Cheers...
Not to discourage you at all but schapps roms are fairly old now, if you look in the WM06 part of the Hermes forum you'll find some newer roms. Read the description to find out if you like it, then the last few pages to see any problems with and fixes available.
i have schaps installed now, its really great, but it can be done better in my opinion, which custom rom do you recommend me?
I use PDAViet V27 at the moment but also like PDACorner. Roms are a personal choice though, depends what you want it for, how much extra stuff you want in it and how fast you want it to run.
The I said are WM6.1. They are pretty good for me but depending on the 3rd party apps, I found, can become unstable when the apps are installed together.
I use SPBbackup 2.0.1 so if something does go wrong I can re-install a lot of stuff without a great deal of time being spent.
Cheers...
i use spb backup too, but now my programs that i first installed arent in my programs tab, and on my phone by programmabestanden (dutch for programfiles) i can start it tough
If the apps are in you programs filke on the sd card, use Resco explorer or total commander to create shortcuts of the .exe in the windows directory. windows>start menu>programs. Then they'll appear in the programs director of your phone.
For Resco it says "startmenu as shortcut", I have to move the shortcut manually to the programs directory or soft reset will do the trick too.
Cheers...
thankzz
I can sync and copy files like several of the cabs from this site to the phone Storage card or My Documents in the phone and when I try and run any of them I always get an Unsuccessful .
is the ATT Pure Application locked? I did notice that all the applications I am running are not digitally signed or signed by a trusted provider and the phone complains and ask if if I still want to run. I pick yes and it still fails.
Any thoughts? I know some of you have ATT Pure devices!
FIXED
I did this and all is working...
1. Deleted my partnership with my laptop (Win 7 64bit)
2. boot my ATT Pure
3. Connect but dont establish partnership
4. copy over the cab files you want
5. use file explorer on the Topaz (Pure) to run them
6. all works fine!
7. loading EnergyROM now
the lesson to be learned if it does not work for you and it works for everyone else then go back to the basics!
Welcome to AT&T... yes all branded phones are app locked because they want to force you to use their apps.
You can app unlock it using a cab install... but some new phones are even rejecting that.
Official and Custom roms are the way to go. I recommend everyone with a Pure to at least flash to the newest Official WM6.5 build. It will work just the same but be clean of AT&T junk.
I have an AT&T Pure
I have no particular problems with installing Cabs
As another poster said copy the cab to a temp directory
and run it from File Explorer (delete the cab to save space after its been run)
Or you can use "CabviaActivesync" availabele on this site which makes it a little bit easier. (but I did have two cabs that had bad setups and needed manual install)
Bottom line the PURE does not block most cabs (I've tried)
(I only had a problem with the write protected weathercity database now ok)
Chances are something is wrong on your Pure or your method
To the senior poster that replied
Hey I've made tweeks and played with the stock ROM
I'd love to clean the bloated and unused ATT aps
incorporate weather into the clock ( TF3D 2.5+++)
and get a cleaner start menu (too many aps)
and certainly see an improvement in performance and snappiness
Id love to try a new ROM
but most new roms are written for Diamond2/Topaz
I'm not clear if the radios are the same on the the D2 and the Pure?
Can I burn WM and TF3D without affecting the radio part of the code?
Are the any other issues we need to be aware before we burn a new Topaz rom
onto an ATT variant of the Topaz ?
Is there a copy of the original Pure Rom available in case we need to return
it to ATT (what else would we need to insure we could return to ATT to fix any other later warrenty covered problems)
Of course I realize there is a risk invilved,
but whats the best safety prep?
I'm new to phones but an old micro hard/firm/soft ware and PPC guy
Thanks in advance
KJL
I haven't had a single problem installing anything on my stock Pure. Even software that normally requires an app-unlocked phone installs just fine.
I'm also curious about what Kenn asked. I'm getting a Pure tomorrow and I won't be able to get the crapware off there fast enough.
Specifically, can I flash the official HTC 6.5 rom to the Pure without having to hard spl? Is is just a straight flash?
I have the same problem with this ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=5743820#post5743820
Everything is OK but installing the cabs.
When I try to install any cab it wrote me "Instalation of ... was unsuccessful."
I tried a lot of cabs and all of them are the same
Any help please?
.
This particular problem gave me 4 day headache last week when i couldn't figure out why I couldn't HSPL my Pure. Had to Hard Reset entire phone, everything worked
Yes, I also hard-reseted my phone yesterday and everything works now!
