So I can get on wifi networks anywhere but at home. My MDA Vario finds the SSID, but won't connect.
If I remove WEP encryption on the router side, it'll connect. No luck with WEP64 or 128, it'll just say 'connecting' for a while and then go on to the other networks on my list.
What am I missing? I'm using the WRT54GL, which is pretty much the same as every other Linksys.
The obvious question comes into my mind.
Did you place the WEP key in "network key".
If not that will do the trick.
Cheers,
Drifter
yeah, I have.. both shared and open, on WEP. Something more odd is happening, which is why I suspect the configuration of the Linksys.
Like I said, it works if I turn off WEP on the router.
if I wait a while, I get the "unable to obtain a server-assigned IP address" message.
Try to reset your Linksy by unpluging it for a while.
Sometimes I can't connect to my linksys and after a reset it will connect.
Some ohter question. Why don't you use WPA instead of WEP?
Have you the possibility to enter the WEP Keys in hex and in ASCII Mode on your router?
WEP is a bit tricky on a wm5 device. You have to enter your key in hex format and it has to be exactly 10 digits long for 64bit or 26 digits long for 128 bit. That means the ASCII version of the key has to be five digits or 13 digits respectively before being converted to hex. I believe your router will do the conversion for you.
BTW, the lynksis wrt54g series routers are sorta a "hacker favorite" because lynksis made the firmware open so there have been a lot of firmwares developed for it that extend it's capabilities like being able to turn up the transmission strength or add a RADIUS server. Check out DD-WRT or OpenWRT (actually a mini Linux installation). It's a fun little machine.
Gene
theres no need to enter the key in hex. i use an ascii key! but be sure you take the right format on your router!
I've not got an ascii key to work but have helped a number of people to connect to a variety of APs using hex of exact length that couldn't otherwise connect. FWIW.
Yeah, that's why I got the GL
I've tried 5-character ascii and 13-char ascii. I think I'll try the 64-bit hex now.
I may use WPA at some point, but I have other odd devices that need to connect, such as a wireless print server. They are hard to configure.
(edit: I got tired of having to type in the hex key, so I went with WPA. Reconfigured my printer adapter and MDA, now I have two laptops and a second MDA to go! I guess the ASCII-hex generation scheme on the Linksys doesn't match the WM5 scheme.)
so you got it to work? If not, give your wizard a static ip address and see if that helps. also i'm connecting to my linksys and d-link routers easily and both or them have a Shared WEP encryption.
I have a linksys and it works fine; try upping the power output of your k-jam to full power and then try...
yes, I got it to work. I think the trouble was trying to use the ASCII WEP key.

Hi all. I looked at several wi-fi posts on here, but couldn't find anything related to my problem.
I'm beginning to suspect that it's because of something stupid I'm doing, cos it really should be working...
Anyhoo ...I have a wireless router at home, and it's serving 3 PCs with DHCP IP addresses, and an internet connection. I have no issues with it.
What I'm trying to do now is get my shiny new XDAIIi to connect, so that I can have the damn thing on the internet. So far, no luck.
Now, I have got the XDA to detect my SSID. It detects all the settings, and tells me it's connected. I even have a signal strength bar on it which reads about 50%.
However, when I set it to pick up a DHCP address it stubbornly refuses, remaining with a "I can't see a DHCP server" 169.x.x.x address.
I've tried reserving an address on the router and allocating it to the MAC address of the XDA, and manually setting the XDA to have that IP address, entering my router as the gateway, and even entering 2 valid DNS server IPs from my ISP into the name server entries. Still nothing. It says it's connected with the IP address I allocated, but I have no net connection, and I can't ping that address from any of my PCs.
All the while the status screen on the router tells me that the device, with it's MAC address, is connected to the router fine.
Surely this has to be something simple. I have set up all the clients and router for my network, and the settings on the XDA are pertty much the same, and really SHOULD be working.
I'm kinda at my wits end.
So basically any suggestions or advice, or anyone with similar experiences please get in touch, cos I'm struggling to see what I've done wrong, and it's giving me an ulcer.
Many thanks in advance.

3COM WAP (3CRWE454G72) - XDA IIi WIFI Problems
Hi Jess,
I very much share your frustration.
I have a 3COM WAP (3CRWE454G72) which has served me well. I have a few machines at home working from it. At work we have 20+ machines working from the same model (older firmware).
My specs are as follow:
3C number 3CRWE454G72
Software version 1.03.07A
Boot loader version 1.00.00
Wireless version V1.0.2.1
Hardware version R01A
Don't have the office one's specs here at the moment ...
At work I can get an IP address (there's a windows DHCP server) .. AND I can ping google and traceroute to google. BUT, XDA IIi doesn't seem "know" that it's connected (e.g. network settings shows the WAP as available, but not connected). SKYPE even works!! But nothing else, no IE, no Terminal Services Client, no Avant Go, no network ActiveSync. They all say that the is no network card configured (but with vxUTIL, vxIPCONFIG, etc). I can see ALL the IP details from the DHCP server.
At home it's worse. I can't even get it to connect to the WAP (either with WEP 128, WEP 64 or encryption turned off). As I'm not even getting an IP address at home from the WAP's DHCP server, I've built a new DHCP server on my one linux box and it works for all my machines ... now I can actually trace requests from devices for IP's ... and the XDA IIi never requests an IP address. Which tells me that it's not even getting through the first stages of connecting with the WAP (again tried WEP, NO WEP).
To make things worse. I have been able to connect to some open WAP's in the neighbourhood ... everything functioning normal.
I'm losing the will to live here also ... ;-)
Wolfie
the plot thickens...
Hi Wolfie.
Well, at this end I seem to have more news.
By removing all WEP encryption and removing the MAC address access restriction I had enabled, I got the XDAIIi online, and all was working.
I then enabled the security a step at a time, and at each step updated the configuration on the handheld, and it still all worked. I was so pleased.
)
However this morning I have come to put the thing online again, and once again it refuses to pick up a DHCP address.
I tried my process again, and this time it wont work.
It definitely seems that it's the encryption that's stopping it, but I can't get it working this morning.
When I disabled everything I managed to get it online, but then re-enabling the security killed it and I can't get it to come online again.
SIGH
Oh well, I will try again later. Fussy thing. Anyone ever manage to solve this ??
Jess
have u tried soft reseting the device and retrying, sometimes that cures these hiccups

WIFI WOES
Jess, thanks for the reply. There's hope. ;-)
I have tried your approach yesterday. However, to no avail. At home I completely opened my WAP, e.g. any MAC, no WEP/WPA, etc. But still nothing. When I look at my log files on the WAP. I can see plenty of entries coming from my XDA IIi ...
04 min(s) 41 sec(s) after system power on : Wireless MAC address 00:09:2D:14:C9:F2 has connected with the device
04 min(s) 43 sec(s) after system power on : Wireless MAC address 00:09:2D:14:C9:F2 has connected with the device
04 min(s) 45 sec(s) after system power on : Wireless MAC address 00:09:2D:14:C9:F2 has connected with the device
04 min(s) 46 sec(s) after system power on : Wireless MAC address 00:09:2D:14:C9:F2 has connected with the device
04 min(s) 48 sec(s) after system power on : Wireless MAC address 00:09:2D:14:C9:F2 has connected with the device
04 min(s) 50 sec(s) after system power on : Wireless MAC address 00:09:2D:14:C9:F2 has connected with the device
... and it just goes on and on and on .... while trying to connect.
At the same time in all connections attemps, I don't get a single entry in my DHCP servers log saying that my XDA II attempted to connect.
Jim: I've tried hard resets, soft resets, O2 Active installed, Corporate mode, pretty much everything my single brain-cell can come up with. ;-)
The thing is definitely a little fiddly indeed ...
The search goes on ...
... anybody out there got their XDA IIi working with WIFI using DHCP and WEP or WPA?
Did you ever get this working?
I have a shiny new XDAIIi and have been trying to get connected via my Cisco Aironet 1200 WAP. The device happily detects my network, accepts the WEP key fine (complains if I enter the wrong key so I know it's communicating) but refuses to pick up an IP address. The Wireless LAN Manager just sits there "Scanning network..."
I firmly belive I'm just missing something but...........
Any help gratefully received :?

I got my QTek 2020i today and for the life of me I can't get it to connect to the internet using my wifi connection @ home
I also have a 3COM router 3CRWE754G72-A and I have my home pc connected to this and also occassionally my work PC - both with no probs.
I can get the qtek to connect and I get a 50% signal strength and I can view an IP address and everything looks good but I can't seem to setup a "Connection" as required by IE?
This is what I get:
"Cannot connect with current connection settings. To change your connection settings, tap Settins"
I tap settings and I get this:
My ISP
Add a new modem connection
My ISP
Add a new modem connection
Add a new VPN server connection
Set up my proxy server
I've gone into each of these and had a "play" but I still can't get the bloody thing to work
Can someone PLEASE help as this is starting to drive me mad! - I'm not giving up easily...I've been trying to get this to work for a good 4 hours now and I can't find anything in the manual or on the web that helps...this post was the closest I could fine >>> hence the bump!

have you try to configure the network cards in the connection setting and set the internet using the tiacxwln Compatible Wireless Ethernet?

Okay, I can get the connection to read "connected" via the Wireless Lan Manager and I can get an IP address - which is totally different to all the other PC's that use my wifi connection - they're all 192.168.1.x whereas this is very different? - the address that I get isn't even the same as the IP Address of my router - I have a static IP address so I know this isn't changing???
Also, when I view the network card page I see the following:
Configure Wireless Networks
Add New...
3Com Available
I can click on this and view the settings for it or I can hold-click and get the option of connecting. If I do this, it just says "connecting"; it never actually says "connected"?
Anyone know where I can get a walkthrough for this?
Cheers

3 Com Routers
Hi, DotN
I put a 3Com router in my local pub.
I have no problem connecting to it and solving the usual pub talk problems with it.
If you are getting a connection but your IP address starts with 169.254 then I would say you have a WEP problem. The software only appears to check for incorrectly formatted WEP keys, so either turn it off or make sure you enter the correct key. When selecting connect to a router the message sticks on connecting, come out of the screen and go back in after about 30 secs. Check you ip address. I have had some issues with GRPS trying to connect, but they seem to go away after a couple of hides.
I have to say that I am not over the moon with my XDA2i, but the wifi part has worked pretty well for me.

Hi Paddy
Thanks for the info. You're bang on with the IP Address!...169.254.x.x
So what encryption can I use?
I've deffinately got the correct password but it's obviously not working

Wayne
Hi again
Okay, I've just checked the encryption and I'm using WPA-PSK authentication with TKIP encryption.
Is this what you had?

Are you using a password or 13 Hex pairs, I use the pairs. Try either turning wep of completely or entering 26 1s. Remove your setting for your ap in Configure Wireless Networks screen then reconnect.
Let me know what happens

Okay, I've basically removed all security from my wifi setup. I live in the middle of nowhere so it's not a problem - although once I get the wifi working I'll try and get the security going again.
I still can't get a connection
...stop the press!
Okay, I had a thought...maybe I can't connect because of the speed?
the router is a 11g but supports 11b (which is what the QTek 2020i/XDA IIuses) - sure enough, I had the 11g only option selected - DOH!
removed that and I've managed to connect without security.
I assume this was my problem all along...will now stick the security back on and try again
Thanks again Paddy
Cheers

Update: I've now managed to get the wifi working with WPA-SPK authentication using TKIP encryption
all along it was simply a case of me having the speed on the router set above what the PDA was capable of! I'd set this ages ago when I first setup my wlan and had forgotten about it cause everything I use is 11g
Cheers again

Doh!...nope, not working again...back to the 169.254.x.x problem.
It's obviously to do with the encryption this time. I'll try some other variations - at least I know that it can work

bump!
pretty much same prob!
i can get an ip, have to check what it is, it tells me its connected on the scanning network page but on the other bit it tells me its available or connecting but never connects!
i've turned wep off and still no joy!
its really starting to drive me mad!
please please someone help
Take a read back through the last lot of posts between myself and MacPad - I think you'll find the answer there.
For me, I had to totally disable my security and everything else - I could then connect. Once I'd done that, I managed to use WEP with a 26 digit key - start by using something like "0" 26 times...make sure u count as u type them zero's in though as if u get it wrong it won't work!
apart from that, not sure what to say. If you're getting the 164.x.x.x ip address though then as MacPad said, it's to do with the security.
I would mention that the XDAIIi/Qtek 2020ii use 11mbps wifi (b) and not 54mbps (g) so make sure u've got ya router configured to allow both types of connection...this eventually turned out to be my main problem - doh!
Cheers

ok now im home ive re-read and done the things mentioned. with a completely unsecure connection i can get a connecation, but the moment i use any kind of encryption (im using wep 64bit, but tried 128bit as well) no matter what key i use i get a split second of connection then its gone!
firewall is not on either.
any ideas??
thank for the suggestions guys im finally progressing
Right then, I don't know much about secure Wifi, so I've just changed my access point to not broadcast the SSID. So, how might I get my MDA Pro to learn about the SSID if it's not broadcast? Can someone please give me a "for dummies" guide to the LEAP thing as I don't have a clue
When I was broadcasting an SSID, it all worked perfectly, pretty much automatically.
I cheated, i set access point to broadcast ssid just whilst i put the JJ on it, once on i turned off ssid broadcasting.
its seemed a bit flakey when trying to add it in the leap settings page. i tried both open adn eap and then just decided it'll be quicker just to enable ssid for 2 mins.
This is hardware dependent, of course, but I set my wifi router up to only allow access from listed mac addresses. That, in addition to hiding ssid (once connected) and 128 bit wep is about enough to stop me getting the crawling heebie-jeebies.
They don't call me paranoid mike for nothing.
Just because you are paranoid, doesn't mean they *aren't* out to get you

Interesting, and I think my router will do this. How can I determine the MAC address of the MDA?
OK, the following is on a blue angel but I imagine that the principle should extend to WM05.
Firstly, get the wep setup and copy the (uppercase) key to your ppc via AS so you can broadcast your ssid with relatively few twitches D).
Start > Settings > Connections > WLAN, fire up wifi and connect to your access point - in WM2003SE this means checking a tick box (or ticking a checkbox). Once you're connected, you should be able to see the ssid, tx rate etc as well as the mac of your wifi adapter.
Additionally / alternatively, your wifi ap may tell you the macs of all connected devices. The smart person would check this first and make a note of any devices and use this as a cross-check.
HTH!
Hidding the ssid doesn't bring any security
- trust me -
...
The only way is to setup a basic WPA encryption. And you will be secure as long as you change the password on regular basis (every 1 or 2 months)
Avoid WEP encryption it's just crap and doesn't bring any security.
The SSID stuff and mac address filtering are just making you think that you are secure when you are not.
30sec to 5min max to decrypt WEP encryptions, less than 5 sec for mac address and SSID stuff.
works fine on mine and I don't broadcast ssid.
>start>settings>connections>network cards
>add new
type in your SSID as the network name
fill in the rest as per your setup
ok, there is no real security on wireless, but if we are all going to use it we may as well instigate all the security options we can. if there are 2 connections for a cruiser to access and 1 is easier than the other, I know what I would do....
WEP and above do provide security, at least if you don't want any old Johnny using your network.
So, use WEP or whatever security you have.
Hiding SSID literally just hides it. However, most hacking tools easily show the SSID anyway, so don't really on this. But, if you do hide the SSID, you have to set up the connection manually, typing in the name of the SSID and WEP key.
V
most hackers tools that show ssid will decrypt wep in less than 2min.
I was just pointing it out because
1- it's to consider when you're buying an Access Point
2- If you're using it with sensible website (bank account) and such (even to check your mail - using your credit card etc ...)
fair point...
I guess it would be unthoughtful of us to give the know how without also giving the gotchas
;-)
I have got a hidden SSID and the qtek is able to find the network after typing in the name, but it ist not able to connect.
I have already checked the MAC.
It gets the right IP but after few second it scans the network for another time and so it goes on
Hi all !
As far as i can understand there is no WPA support on Universal.
Did anybody hear about the plans or is there any third-party software that provides WPA functionality on Universal ?
Regards.
Orange SPV M5000 flashed with JASJAR_WWE_11353_137_10402.

huh?
currently supported is WPA-PSK, WPA-TKIP and WPA-WEP...
If you meant WPA2 with AES: I dont know.
I had asked (much) the same question before buying my O2 EXEC and found the answer here
http://certifications.wi-fi.org/wbcs_certified_products.php?TID=2
Select High Tech Computer Corp (HTC) and Submit and you'll see the Exec listed as (if I remember correctly) PU10. It claims to have
WPA™ - Personal
WPA™ - Enterprise
EAP-TLS

How to achieve it ? I can see ONLY LEAP in my wireless config.
Can you help ? Did you try ?
can anyone help with this issue?
I am not sure as to how to proceed (and my obvious insufficient knowledge of wireless networks is not helping...).
I am currently using WEP, so my educated guess is that if I set WPA on my router I will be automatically prompted to sign-in with my WPA encrypted password.
Can I have confirmation of this; and also - do I need to enable/disable any setting on my xdaExec before I attempt to connect my device using WPA.
I use WPA-TKIP
I use WPA-TKIP with my JasJar. Not sure exactly how I set it up, but can't remember that I struggeled with it.
Believe I just setup WPA on 3Com router and when JasJar connected I was aksed to enter the code/passkey, and then it worked. ...possible I did some changes on JasJar setup also...?
Actually I had some more problems due to that I also use MAC filthering on the router, and if I added my JasJar's MAC AFTER setting up WPA, it did not work, and I had to remove from JasJar and reconnect again, type passkey, and then it worked. ...but if you don't use MAC filthering, this will not be an issue.
If you struggle with it, I can remove and add it again when I get home, and note down the steps.
Thanks mrGydar :!:
I appreciate your effort.
Before you re-configure your setup - I'll attempt to alter my setup to WPA and see how it goes. If it doesn't work out within a day - I'll let you know!
OK
Just for info, settings on my JasJar is right now in settings for my homenetwork:
Authentications: WPA-PSK
Data Encryption: Passkey
Best of luck, and if U struggle, let me know, and I'll write down the steps.

Don't speak too loudly. I don't want my o2 Exc to discover it's been doing something it shouldn't for the last 6-weeks.
However, I have my Exec configured for my own and four different client's networks using WPA-PSK, TKIP and MAC-filtering, so it definately *does* work. I have the habit of presetting the connection settings since my key is 27-alphanumeric characters and it's a pain typing that in blind.
There is something strange depending upon which way you go about the configuration. On a few occasions, I've clicked the Authentication dropdown arrow to find only Open or Shared options listed - no WPA or WPA-PSK in sight. I've then turned the wireless off/on, sometimes reset, or just gone back into the configuration screen a different way and the options were back again.
It's usually happened when I've been rebuilding the system after an enforced hard reset, so I've never been in the mood to track the problem further - too busy trying not to smash the damn thing against the wall!
correct me if I am wrong, but wasn't WPA security for 802.11g and up.
This model supports 802.11b only so it will not do WPA.
afaik this would mean WEP is the only option.

Don't think so. I have a couple of clients with laptops only capable of 11b and they connect at 11b to multi-speed wireless/ADSL-routers using WPA-PSK without problems. Probably depends upon the age of the router device's firm- and hard-ware. Think one of my earlier ZyXEL models had only WEP when it arrived, but then a firmware update added WPA.
People
I am happy to say - I have just checked it out and it works :!: :!:
Earlier I reconfigured my router from WEP to WPA, and a few minutes ago I switched the wifi-ON, on my Exec - it just located my home network and asked for it's WPA catchphrase (password);
I didn't have to configure anything else. Just to be certain I used the internet explorer to surf a bit - and it did so with no problems whatsoever!

I must admit I had trouble finding out where you configure the wireless adapter in the Universal... But there's no worry because WPA and everything else can be configured here...!
Firstly ensure that the wireless adapter is switched on in the Wireless Manager... FN + -> key,
Once this has done, the wireless adpater will scan for networks in range. At this point some users will be prompted for the WPA key as mentioned in previous posts (this didn't work for me).
However, if you go to Start... Settings... Connections... Network Cards now, there will be a Configure Wireless Networks tab (wireless tab)... Here you can click Add New to enter the Network Name, and specify the WPA key via the "Network Key" tab.
Hope this helps some new users of the Universal!
OK US Robotics MAXG router. All set up, laptops etc working fine. I got the mini s and the xda2i working on it too.
Then i went and stuck the security on it
WPA2 and WPA (PSK)
TKIP and AES
entered all the correct stuff on the computers and working ok.
with both the XDA's it says trying to connect but wont.
I ve looked in the distruction books for both 2i and mini s but they just say you might need to enter some password!!!
so mini s and xda 2i settings are
general tab
network name 'xxxxxxxxx'
connects to 'the internet'
network key tab
authentication 'wpa-psk'
data encryption 'tkip'
network key 'correct entry for my sys'
key index 'greyed out'
802.1x tab
nothing changeable but set to
use ieee 802.1x net access control
eap type 'smart card or cert
they both sit there saying my network is available but wont connect.
anyideas whats going on??

I recall a similiar problem some time ago and as far as I can remember I solved it by changing the encryption to WEP. It's worth a try.

cheers.... dont want to go to WEP as its crackable in under 5mins by a novice now!!
Seems a bit silly that the XDA's have the apparent ability to do this encription but then won't work.

Is WEP really that hackable??
heres the info i found on it.
http://blogs.zdnet.com/Ou/index.php?p=42
http://blogs.zdnet.com/Ou/index.php?p=43

worth a read.
I'm using the exact same router with the same wireless security config. While other clients can connect to the router using WPA or WPA2 with TKIP or AES encryption, my TyTN simply refuses to connect.
After some intensive trial/error, I figured out the problem to be the TyTN itself, which simply can't get associated with the router when both TKIP and AES is selected on the router. Changing the WPA encryption to TKIP only while keeping both WPA and WPA2 authentication on the MAXg router solved the problem (no need to use the less secure WEP encryption).
Hope this helps.
HT
cheers, i have been playing with my settings too. I found that i had to change to WPA and TKIP only to get he Mini s to connect but hte 2i still wont The only thing i really use the connection at home for is to transfer files if im on the laptop rather than having to go to my main puter and plugging it all in. Its a pain as i tend to use the PDA's at work for stuff. Ill just have to get off my ass n go up stairs and do it now. Its a pain and it should work but im learning that these things aint all they should be

You bet it is, Try backtrack 2.0 is self booting linux build for "testing network security"
I have recently changed my routers encryption from WEP to WPA-PSK
I have gone into the settings on my VarioII and changed the key, it finds the router tries to connect but fails, I have re-entered the code several times but still it won't connect, it is a pain because you have to enter the code manually (it's 63 characters long) I managed to do it on my PS3 first time

Not going to solve your problem, but if you use something like Hitchhiker then at least it allows you to cut and paste the key.
There are lots of threads on WPA-PSK often Router specific - However without knowing your router here is a listing:

Thanks for your quick response, my router is a BT Voyager 2100. I'll see if there's any firmware updates for it
Ok fixed it.
Switch off the router and remove the connection on your network card and soft reset, restart the router, when it finds the connection put in your details, all is fine again.

Good news!

Upgrade to Windows Mobile 6
I flashed my TyTN to the latest radio and Windows Mobile 6 (using the black one now, but the XDA .2 worked as well).
Pre WM6 I had no WiFi love on my WPA encrypted link, but afterwards it works just fine. I had the same symptoms as you described, finds the SSID, enter password, no worky.
