"Not enough memory to save the document." - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro General

When I use Word Mobile on my Jasjar, it often happens that I am suddenly unable to save the file. This message appears:
Not enough memory to save the document. Please delete files or insert a storage card.
Tap Discard to close without saving or Cancel to return to the document.
Sometimes it helps to stop other running programs, sometimes not. The error message may also appear when I have recently taken a soft reset and only use Word Mobile. It may also happen with very small documents.
I use the wonderful PQz, which occupies a good deal of memory, but not that much...
Any advice??

no idea sorry, never had this problem. i have word set to save to SD card automatically so local memory shouldnt be relevant.
what is PQz?

This error happens often to me - I am surprised that not several other Universal users immediately respond that they have the same problem! And it happens while Settings -> System -> Memory tells me that 19 Mb is available for Storage and 27 Mb for programs.
I always save documents on the SD card.
PQz is the most wonderful program, which really increases the usability of the Universal enormously. And it is free. I use it to achieve fast multitasking and to get a Ctrl key. It may also be used for several other purposes. You may read about it by following this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=33343
and look at the website
http://www.nicque.com/PQz/

This problem happens to me about 1/4 of the time. It doesn't matter if the file is large or has no text whatsoever. The only solution I have found is to copy the contents of my word file into a text file and save it using another application, thus losing all the formatting.
I've never used pqz.

Anyone having trouble with Storage Card Shortcuts?

To date I have had the following problems with shortcuts to exe files located on my 1GB Storage Card:
1) Every time I switch on the device, Skype reports that it cannot load the Skype.exe file on the Storage Card, a shortcut of which is in the Startup folder
2) Every reboot, GSPMagic cannot load itself from Startup. If however I delete the shortcut, then create a new one manually in the Starup folder, it works fine! I have checked the old shortcut and it is exactly the same as the new one! They are identical, yet one says that the source file cannot be found.
3) Microsoft Money installed a shortcut in Programs. The shortcut had no icon, and again said the file was not found or needed to be reinstalled. Yet when I created the shortcut manually into Programs, and overwrote the shortcut setup created, it worked fine.
What on earth is going on, and has anyone experienced something similar?
Most other program shortcuts to the Storage Card work fine strangely!
I was under the impression that anything called at startup had to be installed in main memory.
GSPMagic did not work for me on the storage card, but once in main memory was fine.
Can anyone confirm this?
So I have to install Skype on the Device not Storage Card? I don't think the setup instructions said this :?
Glad to hear you're using GSPM++, it means that mackaby07 and I have helped some people!
I too have had trouble when loading this on the memory card, but in the main memory it's fine, and it doesn't take up enough space to worry about either!
Haven't noticed any real speed increase with that lil prog, just testing it at the moment.
However, what about my issues with Skype, and MS Money, both loading from the Storage Card. Surely they shouldn't cause a problem? Weird one this.
CJSnet - at least on the Magician, storage card shortcuts aren't always ready to be run from softreset, it seems like it takes a few seconds after boot for the storage card to be ready to use (so much OS kerchunking going on in the background perhaps). So it's as if the storage card isn't inserted at that point, so they don't launch.
I'll be trying to write a small fix for this at some point...
V
Great, please do post it back here when you have!
In the meantime any way to fix for example Skype insisting on running every time I wake the device out of standby? It doesn't appear in the Startup group so must be somewhere else, and if on the Storage Card, it won't run -- I get the same error.
4) Microsoft Reader again installs an icon in Programs, but when clicked I get the same error as all the above.
This is therefore not a Startup lag issue.
The exact error is:
"The file 'msreader' [for example] cannot be opened. Either it is not signed with a trusted certificate, or one of its components cannot be found. You might need to reinstall or restore this file".
Help!
Hehe talking to myself here, but hmm, this is odd, I just tried recreating the MS Reader shortcut.
Original from Setup: 19#\Windows\msreader.exe (<-path does not exist)
Manually created by me: 36#"\Storage Card\Windows\MsReader.exe"
Why is Setup, when I tell it to install Reader on the Storage Card, creating a shortcut that does not mention the Storage Card, and therefore cannot possibly work? This must be the issue with the other items.

This is driving me mad? Why does it make every shortcut to a prog on Storage Card leave out the 'Storage Card' part of the path? Any help greatly appreciated. Maybe a reg entry? :?

Hi Vijay, any news on this handy sounding app?
I am still getting this problem, and not just after boot.
Why is it, whenever I turn the device on from standby power-save mode, I get an error with Skype saying it can't find itself on the Storage Card?
Why is Skype trying to load something when I come out of standby sometimes, but not always?

Storage memory is critically low

I'm getting that message.
The funny thing is, I haven't added anything to storage memory in a while. I got the phone a few weeks ago and installed everything I needed then - there was around 6MB remaining of storage.
However, whilst I'm driving today, I get an SMS and have a look and it shows me this critically low warning. I got home and tried to delete all my SMS but the phone decided to crash. After rebooting it didn't load all the today plugins properly, so I decided to reboot using SPB Pocketplus's safemode. I press the safemode option during boot and it says it will boot in safe mode but all it does is reset itself again and start in normal mode.
When it starts in normal mode it shows the critically low warning and freezes - I can't close the warning or do anything about it.
Does anyone know what could have caused this all of a sudden? Considering I had several MB free earlier today and haven't added anything to it myself... Also, what on earth can I do to fix this problem? It says to remove some programs but I can't when the device isn't responding or going into safemode...
Do a search for big files - also check your documents in case you've inadvertently recorded a lot of nothing (as I've done in the past) - also I believe temp internet files and remote desktop caching can take up quite a bit.

At the time it was impossible to search for any files - the device wasn't responding at all once it had booted up. However, I managed to connect it to my PC and access it remotely - even though the device's GUI wasn't responding and I had indeed recorded a load of nothing when it had been woken in my pocket by the SMS. Needless to say that button is now disabled.
Thanks for the reply, it's sorted now. Well, as sorted as you can get with the universal's minescule amount of memory
If you spend a lot of time surfing the net, your cache will fill up the space. Try to flush the cache and search for big files too. You should use SKTOOLS, is the best.
how
Daft question but where is the cache info stored. I can find may way around but I am not that technical. I am having the memory problem too. I have nothing on my device but its full. I have a map program on the card and thats it.
To clear your PIE cache, open PIE go to the menu and selct tools, options and then select the memory tab and click the delete files button. It will probably take a while. A easier way to manage this cache, in my opinion, is to purchase and install SKTools(a fantasic app for many uses) and run the quick clean program. I have the quick clean app mapped to a keyboard combo (using freeware PQZII) so it's very easy to free up memory.

Can I stop Camera app asking about Storage Card?

I have a storage card in at all times but I actually want photos to be saved to the built-in storage rather than the card. Annoyingly, the Camera application always checks for a card and asks if I want to change the setting. Even though I always tell it I don't want to use the card, it never remembers this.
Can anyone tell me how to fix that?
Cheers!

Usually the camera only asks about storage card when you have just inserted a new card OR you have the "network" folder enabled.
Now unfortunately the camera is only capable of saving to one of two locations at any one time so:
If the view network folder is NOT enabled you will be offered:
"Main" or Storage card" and once set it will remember your choice and not ask again.
BUT with Network folder enabled and a storage card inserted you will:
be asked if you want to use "StorageCard" every time you start Camera, but in camera tools you will only be offered "Main" or "Network" even if you chose the card. It will not set to storage card even if you said you wanted this when camera started.
So, if you want to use main memory with a storage card inserted and don't want the silly question about using storage card each time, then you must disable the network folder. (Use e.g. Resco or Total Commander to do this - forget now if regular File Explorer does it)
Equally if you want to save to storage card you will also need "network" folder disabled otherwise it will save to Main memory even when you say yes to Storage Card on start up of application.
The default setting for the Network folder is disabled, so if you are having problems it is likely to have been enabled by using the likes of Resco or Total Commander.
For those that like the underlying detail:
Specifying your own location in registry=
HKLM - Software - HTC - Camera - Image - SaveFolder - xyz
where xyz is your folder name, but note this folder will be added as a subfolder of the following (in this case storage card) auto added path: /Storage Card/My Documents
Note that setting a location or name other than the defaults will result in problems viewing pictures via the application, though they can be viewed by locating and opening files individually.
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\HTC\Camera\Image]
value of "Saveto" = 0 will save images to main memory
value of "Saveto" = 1 will save images to storage card

Mine asked about 4 times and then quit. I thought it was odd but all is good now.

Yep, that happens. Though if it just does it a few times it's more likely due to, to put it crudely, it being temperamental about recognising the SD card and storing the registry key number successfully. If it persists then it's more likely due to the network folder issue.

Thanks for the information. Here's what I've tried so far, based on it:
Installed Total Commander. Couldn't find an option to display the Network Folder.
Installed Rescoe Explorer. Enabled the Network Folder and did a soft-reset.
Before, with Network Folder disabled, the Camera preferences showed "Main Memory" or "Storage Card" as the only two options.
Now, with Network Folder enabled, the Camera options shows "Main Memory" or "Network" as the only two options.
However, the problem has not gone away. It still 'detects' the Storage Card every time I start Camera and asks if I want to use it instead of main memory. I'm using the latest HTC ROM (1.35.255.2 11/14/06).
I also installed PHM RegEdit to check the values you mentioned.
Under [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\HTC\Camera\Image] I have a key called "SaveFolder_0409" rather than "SaveFolder", but this has the correct value of "My Pictures".
The other key, "Save To", has the correct value of 0 for "Main Memory".
Any other ideas? (Thanks for the help so far.)

Mmmm Pesky thing because in theory if it recognises the card it should not ask each time. I had assumed you had network folder enabled already because with that enabled it definitely will ask about storage card every time. So I would reset to disable network folder. In this mode it should ask about storage card on the first occasion only and once you have chosen ot should not ask again. But as a poster above found this took four goes before it settled down.
So I can only suggest that the act of disabling the network folder again might settle it down and it will only ask you once about storage card.
I;m afraid though this type of problem is rather common and folks just find one day it's fine next day it isn't - in your case I hope the changing of settings to on and off again for network folder may reset things, can't say I'm holding my breath though.

Heheh - nope, it didn't make any difference. Maybe it's just in the design of this ROM to persistently try and persuade me that I really want to save to the Storage Card. After all, who would want to save to Main Memory when they have a Storage Card inserted? (Answer: me.)

Bump! Bump!

any other way to free up memory???

i need help with both the program and storage memory on the device itself...
first, the program memory, say i would have only one program open like right now I am on opera browser and it says about 1mb available. i would go to tasks and end it... then it would say about 3 mb available with no programs open.. i always notice that it has the most after a soft reset... any way to rectify that? i need help because it moves sooooo sluggish
2nd i need help freeing up storage memory on the device, i have tried everything i know of... deleting cookies , deleting every possible file that I put on it, including pics music sounds.. everything! even uninstalling some programs...(I usually install on storage card anyway)
every folder is virtally empty in regards to files that I put there myself...
the last thing for me to do is delete text messages but I have another post discussing why thats a problem
please help me with this, i feel its also causing the phone to move a little sluggish
any suggestions?
Ok, here's some advice, and some software. Both are free, and neither will take offense if ignored.
Load and run ClearTemp: http://mobile-sg.com/software/download.asp?dl=ClearTemp&platform=ppc
It will clear all of your temp files, cookies, etc.
Use a file explorer tool (the built-in one will do) to navigate to your Programs folder and remove all dead wood. Many programs leave behind configuration files and unpacked libraries when uninstalled. This goes double for anything that is customizable. You'll chew up a LOT of memory loading skinning programs and the like. Get an SD card, and leave that stuff on it, instead of the main memory.
Also, look through the Windows\Startup folder and see what's being started up on boot. You may be surprised just how many programs are running without being reported to your task manager. Any Windows user should be used to this. Delete any links to features you recognize and don't want to run at startup.
Optional: read the overclocking thread. Overclocking speeds up your processor. Most people experience significant improvement just increasing clock speed from 195 (default) to around 240, without any side-effects. Thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=255771
Lastly, if you're loading programs to an SD chip, you must be prepared for slower response on loading them. Wizard is slow in reading and especially writing to SD card.
well i have overclocked my wizard already to 240 a long time ago...
i have deleted everything possible on the phone's memory without anything left for me to delete
but i will run the program to delete temp files although i have deleted them through the browser itself...
thanks...
anyone else with othe suggestons?
What rom are you using? you might want to switch. task manager 2.9/or 2.7 will show you what is actualy causing the memory to dissapeare. for mine it is device.exe and another program gwes.exe that deals with activesync. in most cases that is the problem and the only way to rectify that is to change the OS because it probably hasn't been ported right (device exe)
also update your signature so that it will list your devece, OS, Ipl Spl Gsm versions. that way people will have more information and be able to give you better advice.

where is all my storage mem?

I tried to install something earlier and got an error about the amount of storage available.
so I checked.
Storage
Total 181.60
In Use 159.53!!!!
Free 22.07
Program
Total 336.97
In Use 163.13
Free 173.84
I've checked for large files using storage memory and they total less than 20MB...so what the hell is using all my storage mem??
I wonder if it's all being used up in like cache or something, if you use the facebook albums feature I've seen a folder somewhere where it's storing the phtotos you view I think.
Im surprised there's no option to clear the cache of downloaded items etc even if this isnt the cause of your missing space.

I had the same thing happen to me. Check your "my documents" folder. Somehow my storage card documents got copied over to the internal storage. This was not something I did. It just happened.
nope, checked the my documents folder. nothing much in there.
I can't understand what is taking up the storage space
perhaps I've found it.....I have activesync sync'd to my exchange at work, so perhaps all my emails are taking the space. All I kow id I never had this problem with my HD...I always had lots of storage available
if you haven't done too many tweaks...then a hard reset is your best friend.
I noticed a chunk of memory disappearing today and looked into it with MemMaid - I think my Albums cache (under Application Data-HTC-HTC Album-Cache) seems to have bloated in size after my browsing some pictures - there is 27mb of data in there, all with today's date. You wouldn't care if the device wasn't tight for memory in the fist place, but what the hell is the point of an album cache that's a good percentage of the size of the original files!
Two other things could also have a bearing:
Mail - unlikely, but depends on your settings
One Note files - again unlikely, but could be if you have it set to sync
so, I did some exploring and stuff..and still can't find where it has all gone
Total 190
Used 151
Left 39
Recycle Bin 4.1Mb
App Data 10Mb
Music 1Mb
My Doc 7.6Mb
Prog Files 40.7Mb
Other files 4.7Mb
makes a total of 68.1MB
I've checked for hidden files....none...
so somewhere there is 80MB of files that I can't find!!..
I don't really want to do a hard reset, but I might have to just to see what my memory is from stock. I can't believe I've lost that much though...
ok..forced to do the hard reset...
181.60 Total
64.75 in Use
116.84 Free
64 seems like a lot in use when I haven't even installed anything yet!
Opera Cache
Have you tried deleting your cache in Opera, if you use it? I was running very low on memory, deleted my browsing/download cache within Opera and freed up about 70MB of space! Must have been temporary downloads and stuff.

You did not,but HTC did..................
Is there any solution to transfer temporary files and cache files locations to storage card? Some Opera registry settings maybe...
Yes, you can set the location of the cache via opera:config
Hi, can you expand on that a little please Gustopher? I wasn't aware that I could move the opera cache to the memory card? Can you point me the in the direction of where I could do that as I've looked around and can't find the option.
Thanks
No worries:
Open Opera
In the address bar enter 'opera:config' (nothing else, no quotes)
The Opera Preferences Editor should open
Scroll down to 'User Prefs' and click it
Scroll down to 'Cache Directory4' and edit it to read something like '\Storage Card\OperaCache' (doesn't matter what you call the folder on the Storage Card
Scroll down to the bottom of the 'User Prefs' section and click 'Save'
Confirm the prompt and you should be in business
You almost certainly will need to close and restart Opera, but I don't think you need a soft reset
Use a file explorer to check that Opera is writing to your directory
Hope this helps

Thanks a lot Gustopher, that's working great! It might be an idea to re-direct other stuff to the storage card too, like emails/attachments etc.. if that's possible, to preserve phone storage space...
You can certainly redirect attachments - must be done through the Inbox settings though.
However, unless someone has found a way in the meantime, you appear not to be able to redirect mail using the registry tweaks in common circulation.
For reasons I haven't yet got to the bottom of, either the mail app is quick to load or the Storage Card is slow to load on the HD2. As a result, when the HD2 tries to find the mail folder on the Storage Card it can't as the physical Storage Card hasn't been mounted yet. It therefore creates a virtual version of the Storage Card by creating a folder on the device and naming it 'Storage Card'.
When the real Storage Card is mounted a few moments later, the device calls it 'Storage Card2' and all programmes previously installed on the Card no longer work
Yes, all very technical. When you say that you can re-direct attachments you mean physically selecting where you want to save a file once downloaded or is there If there of automatically saving downloads to a specific folder without having to select it yourself every time? I hope you're with me?!!
In the meantime, if a method of saving emails to storage card becomes available, be sure to post it here if you can. Thanks for your help.
Being picky, attachments and downloads aren't the same thing. I'm talking about stuff attached to emails - if you open it and save it off somewhere else, that's a different matter.
To have your email attachments saved to the Card, open Inbox, click Menu-Tools-Options and select the Storage tab at the bottom. Tick the options that says 'When available use this Storage Card...'
