Personally, i wouldn't bother! standalone gps tom tom is so cheap now! save the phones battery and get to halfords!

I've always had active xda cradles in the car so draining the battery was never an issue.
It's worth it just for the show-off factor, quite aside from the times it really has stopped me from getting lost!!

GPS Receiver for XDAIIs?

hi,
Brand new to XDA stuff, not even got one yet but I've ordere done and it's on the way.
I've inherited tomtom5 from my brother who had it for his PDA but he's now switched to something else for the P910 so he's given me his software and maps and stuff but no hardware.
Can anyone recomend a low cost gps receiver for the XDAIIs that I can buy? I was hoping to get one for about £50.
thanks!
chrisB
PS: any other newbie tips, links, etc would be welcome!
I've got this one:

works like a dream
I ended up buying this one:

looks prettymuch the same...
it is... good luck

At last!

I just saw this post about the i-mate jamin or whatever its called, what can I say? Well I am excited very excited!
For ages I have tried to use my i-mate and safecom with no luck and miss the wifi and memory I used to have on the xda IIi also the bluetooth is crap on the jam.
I do hope it is better on the jamin! well I saw this and put an order in for one I just hope its a good ppc and I would say this is going to be BIG thinking that many mobile users will love this with all applications, I hope tomtom 5 runs on it when I get it...
By the way whats happened to the price of the jam on ebay?? it used to be steady? oh well now I can only hope for 100 - 150
I will report on this phone when it is sitting with me..
Also ordered one about two hours ago! 8)
well I have my JAMin now.
I have been playing with it for a little while. so far I can say I am very pleased with it.
I find the 200mhz enough for what I use it for, a definite upgrade for all JAM users.
as I expected an awesome pda/phone

what do you guys think???? m600 or hermes?

Hey! I lost my m600 (prophet) the other day and my insurance company are insisting on giving me a hermes in replacemnt. On the face of it, it seems like a pretty damn good deal, and i'm sure some of you are thinking "are you crazy for even questioning it?".
Anyway, i would really like som opinions on the tytn's performance.
Cheers!

I sold the M600 and bought a VarioII because wanted to try the keyboard. I do quite alot of emails so the keyboard is fantastic! The phone is quicker. With Tmob data plan and 3G its great.
Downside. Quite a bit thicker than the M600. The battery life is shockingly bad in comparison to the M600. The only way i found to get at least get 2 days worth of usage is to force a GPRS connection rather than 3G. But then Ive lost the 3G advantage. Video calling for me a waste of time. WM5 on the Hermes has many more bugs than the M600. The M600 hardly ever crashed, but the Hermes does once a week. Tomtom 6 doesn't work on Hermes without freezing, but works fine on the M600. Video playback is an issue for Hermes due to the ATI video chip, no problems with the M600. I can go on and on. The bottom line is the M600 has a more stable operating system and works with more software than the Hermes. if you use the overclocker on the M600 then in my option its a better phone. Unless you need the keyboard!

But why they are offering a phone with higher street price? TIMEO DANOS ET DONA FERENTES, was my mother lesson, have you studied troy story (trojan horse comes from that story)?
May be that phone isn't so requested and why a phone with this great hardware isn't requested?
Lot of stupids... or lot of problems?
My TyTN experience: nice toy to play, hard to put your business on It!
You NEED also to know the serial number, because below HTC638xxxx you will face (odds=50-60% in a poll here) the screen alignment (SA) issue and HTC service....., just search here
The screen alignment problem can be easily fixed. The solution is somewhere in here... But it's just a matter of slinding a credit card type of plastic all around and between the screen and bezel. I fixed mine this way.
However, the TyTN and the Prophet are not too diferent in speed under normal circumstances and except when using Skype where the Prophet lacks a bit.
You can see a "real-life" speed comparisson here (it's in spanish but you will be able to make sense of it): http://www.poderpda.tv/episodio/48
In the end, I ended up liking the TyTN more than the Prophet becasue of Skype performance and the Keyboard it's just fantastic.
Cheers!

Are u kidding? of course not, Tytn is awesome
If you don't like tytn, trinity(P3600) is a good choice, it's a tytn withous keyboard.
Eten has screen alignment problems 2.
Just go to eten-users forum and check the bugs.
Eten no thanks :x

you're probally not going to get much of a responce man, being your first post and everything..
if you would have looked around you would know its still in development and is not working right now, and that there might be some hardware issues (lack of an antenna)

Ah - new to the forum. Welcome
A few pointers:
1. Make sure your thread title summarises your question/problem
2. Do a search to be sure question has not arisen before
3. There are several boards on the forum - make sure you are on the correct one.
Regarding GPS, as JamesHolden says, the inbuilt GPS chip is unlikely to be enabled anytime soon. In fact, I'd say it never will be due to practical difficulties that make it something that in practical terms will not be worth doing.
If you want GPS therefore you'll need to buy the necessary accessories:
Go to this board:

Yes, actually I was considering getting a btooth one myself. I read today about one in the accessories forum that is very small and even picks up 8/10 sats in the car glove compartment. Also one that goes for 32 hours between charges and one that pops straight into a cigar lighter socket. Lots of choice.

[Q] IdeaTab A1000 GPS

Hey guys,
I'm looking to implement a tablet in my car. The Ideapad A1000 seems like a good alternative to some crappy chinesse no-name out there at a decent price.
But I'm woundering about the quality of the GPS? Is it good enough to use as a "in car" GPS or should I opt out for the A3000?
Thanks!

Well, TBH, I got the initial GPS lock with GPS Test, but it has to stay near the windsheild to get a lock.
But, the most problem I got is with the Bluetooth. It keeps on disconnecting so I can't get a decent read from my OBDII ELM327 device...
It's still a good tablet for the kids, and most likely better than most tablet at the same price, but just not for what I need!
