Device = Qtek 9000 aka Universal
OS = Windows Mobile 5.0
Location = USA
Provider = T-Mobile
GPRS = Unlimited Internet
Questions:
1). Is there anyway to turn on GPRS only from a shortcut?
- As of right now, the only I can turn it on is by opening a browser. I would prefer to be able to turn on GPRS connection with a push of an icon or a button.
2). Is there any programs that will allow streaming of music from shoutcast with streams that are 128kbps without pausing?
- Most of the streams that I listen to only broadcast at 128kbps. Are there any programs that will buffer in the background and not cause the streams to pause? Currently using TCPMP as the stream player and pauses a lot. Don't mind waiting a long time in the beginning for the buffer as long as the stream doesn't have any pauses.
I've tried searching for answers but didn't seem to find any posts on this after about looking through 10 pages of searches.
Thanks.
On question #1
Try Spb GPRS Monitor, it shows in the today screen a bar and amng other things has launch icons for data connection, PIE and e-mail.
Regarding question #1, there's a freeware program GB-SOFT Tweak that will add such a button to the GPRS bubble window (when you click the [G] icon). It's available for WM2003 & WM5 here:
http://www.gb-soft.cz/XDAII/product_gprs_tweak_en.htm
Regarding GPRS, if you're trying to stream 128kbps over GPRS (not EDGE), then the max. rate you're likely to achieve is about 50kbps (even 45kbps due to network unreliability). Your data connection is probably too slow. (If you downloaded a file to your Storage Card that played at that rate, it should be fine).

I am using SPB's GPRS traffic counter and have noticed that without my doing anything, my Jam will download around 100k of data every day (around £0.25 on Vodafone). I can just about survive the financial shock ;-) but I am more worried to know how control connections in general.
Does anyone know what programs on the Jam keep a GPRS connection alive? (I am not using MS Messenger, nor do I have either MS Explorer, the e-mail application or Activesync runnig in the background).
cheers.
I see that you have checked the usual suspects how about MMS this uses GPRS as well maybe you received some? The application you mention (SPB GPRS Monitor) does not tell you which application uses GPRS?
unfortunately is not the mms client - I stopped its installation after a hard reset.
I even go as far as killing off the messaging app and internet explorer with the memory control panel to make sure they don't accidentally run in the background.
my guess is a leaky tcp/ip stack, but i'm still looking for ways of controlling outgoing packets...

I too have the same Issue. Orange billed me for 2.5MB of data. I aint used the darn thing for GPRS.
Alternetives for SPB GPRS Monitor !?
Does anyone have any alternetives for SPB GPRS Monitor. This program makes the OS on my i-mate JAM very unstabele. So I had to remove this program.
I hope someone can help me pointing to a good alternetive app ! I also couldn't find an application like a SMS counter. Any idea's ?
Thanks for your help and kind regards,
R.
I NEVER leave GPRS connected. I always 're-connect and cancel' to drop my connection after getting email headers ....
However....
one day, in one session at 12noon I racked up £17 with 02. They can not explain it and I was sitting at my desk at work with the XDA docked at the time!!! (with internet pass through if needed!)
This is worse than premium rate calls (which are closely monitored) ... all 02 can say is that at 12noon I downloaded over 7mb !! end of story! no more details. I don't know how it is possible unless it connected to their stupid movie portal and downloaded a massive trailer on it's own? - which I would of noticed!
Well I have a complaint in with them. Just think how many people could get stung (and I know what i'm doing!)
I'm now going to try the above mentioned GPRS counter, but has anyone tried this one ? .... http://www.all-locations.com/ GPRS Traffic Counter v3.2

Does anyone know of a way to receive the BBC Radio 1 stream on the Magician
use Pocket Media Player 10 or Real player.. and enter the URL..that's it
I have tried that, hence the reason for posing the question.
You never stated that you had tried either of those options.
You haven't even stated what the problem is, error messages etc...
Ok good point PDA,
The problem is that I cant get Real player 1.0 or 1.1 to work with the bbc's stream of radio1, i have tried the website links but that just wont take me to the player and I have tried the r1live.ram & r1livev7.ram files with the player but it just says the connection faild and gives me a message about not being able to connect to server.

Do any other streams work?
Are you using T-Mobile for your internet connection? If so, open the .ram file with a text editor. Replace :554 with :7070 and it will work. T-Mobile blocks port 554 but not 7070. I'm using the so called 1.1 preview version (although it's been a preview for about 3 years.)
If you're using a NAT firewall, some of the older routers won't pass the UDP protocol correctly and that will also block the stream.
The BBC page will give you the option of listening in an external player. If that option is selected, Pocket Internet Explorer will download the ram file and open the Real Player. Save the ram file as in the future you can just click on the file and the BBC will start streaming.
I am able to use the Virgin Radio Stream, but not the bbc, I have an orange M500, but I do not intend to use it via GPRS, too expensive, I have so far only tried using the internet connection via active-sync, but my PC has no problem streaming it, I have just bought a wireless card, so will be testing that asap.
I'm using a QTEK 9000. Can somebody confirm on their JJ/O2 EXEC/ Dopod 900
1) If a webpage has more than 10 frames you cannot open it
Here's the test
Go to www.numion.com. Start the test by selecting Singapore sites. Run it and a message box will pop-up saying the site exceeded 10 frames
2) If the set is being connected to your notebook through USB (with Activesync disconnected) and its being charged you cannot surf the internet usng either Wi-Fi or G/U (whatever that appears on the top bar). Have not test using AC charger though.
Thanks
Hi,
The error message is;
"This Web page contains too many frames and cannot be displayed. Internet Explorer Mobile can only display pages with 10 or fewer frames."
This to me sounds like a limitation with the application, not hardware. I would presume that a different browser may have other results; ie
- Mozilla
- Opera
- Or some other 3rd party web brower
Just a thought

RE
Hi michaelg,
You are right that its a PIE limitation
BTW, did you test item 2)?
Thanks
Jasjar Pocket IE (and Terminal Server Client) will NOT use existing WiFi connection yet other 3rd party Applications have no such problem!
MS Pocket IE (and MS Terminal Server Client) always tries to use GPRS connection and if I turn flight-mode on, it fails altogether rather than use an existing WiFi connection.
The following applications work fine over WiFi suggesting my network setup is OK:-
AvantGo Client Connect Updates
Weather Panel Updates
Opera Browser v8.5 Beta
My home WiFi hub is a Linksys WRT54G. Works fine with my old XDA II by the way.
Are there any Registry settings I need to change :?:
I have tried searching Tweaks2K2.net for a solution but no luck.
The alternative is that you could connect to your WIFI with your EXEC first and then open PIE. That is the procedure I follow. Click on the icon next to the signal bars on the top bar and you will be presented with a pop up window. Click on Connect to WIFI and after done, open PIE or Netfront and surf using WIFI.
Cheers, Vikas.

Thanks Vikas for your reply.
Sorry, but it was of little help..
Yes, I have a tower-like Icon with to and from arrows showing an existing WiFi connection. The Connectivity Dialog Box that appears when I click the Icon only gives option to "Turn off Wi-Fi", Jump to "Settings" or to "Hide" the dialog. It also shows the WiFi connection name and a bar graph showing connected signal strength.
When I hide the dialog then click on Start->Internet Explorer it shows a start page:
file://\windows\default.htm
If I click on a link on this page e.g. "club i-mate", I get a "connecting..." progress bar at the bottom of the screen shortly followed by a connection Dialog saying it is trying to connect to GPRS, 3G that I must cancel because it costs $0.02 per Kbyte! No page loads. :roll:
If I use Opera Browser, it uses the WiFi link and pages appear as expected.
Clear as mud :?:
I guess the O2 Exec ROM is OK but the i-mate Jasjar ROM has problems on my device. Easy money for Opera guys, they scored my US$29...
Well I have my data timeout set to 2 minutes (vs 10 minutes default) this is a great battery saver.
But I now find if I want to stream some videos from my pc via vlc through tcpmp the app does not automatically reactivate my data connection and stream so what I have to do is open IE or comm manager and enable data so tcpmp can have access.
Anyone know how to provision tcpmp to activate data?
