Hello
is there a dictaphone like function in the xda exec?
i tried to do a search on the universal for dictaphone, it came up with nothing
it does have a voice recording function. Probably can use as a dictaphone. I was though not able to the same to card memory and as the phone's memory is limited it only records for short durations.
You might also want to check out this program, NoteM, free mp3 notes recorder.

thanks for the replies guys
where is the voice recording function, which format does it save in?
i have downloaded notem, can i save mp3 files onto the sd card?

Hi all,
I'm new to everything here and just had a few newbie questions.
I have an O2 Xda 2 but i want to remove everything O2 related from the phone. I am currently using a TIM sim-card but don't really want everything TIM related to be installed either. Is it possible to just have a default phone that simply uses the TIM part of things for calls n messages only?
Ringtones..... What file types are acceptable for use? And what can i use to convert mp3's to a decent length and size for use as such.
More if i think of them.
Thanks in advance
hey,
regarding:
"Ringtones..... What file types are acceptable for use? And what can i use to convert mp3's to a decent length and size for use as such."
you can use wav files, midi and wma. for mp3s; you can always find a decent mp3-wav converter...but that would mean your filesize for one ringtone would be big. what you can do is convert it to wma; that should make the size smaller. or; you could play the mp3 via your xda and then use the recorder to record a part of the mp3 song you want....(recorder to record...a little redundant there )
for the first one; are you saying you want to take out the entire o2 rom???
cheers
you can find LAME here
http://mitiok.cjb.net/
command line is: lame --decode <mp3file> <wavfile>
This is the highest quality encoder/decoder for MP3 available
as for WMA, there are 2 ways of creating this.
1. Put your device into the craddle, open Windows Media Player, put every file you want to send to the playlist. Go to CD/Devices section. On right hand panel choose your XDA as your device, and press sync button.
2. Take of the SD card, put into your SD card reader on your computer, do like above, but this time choose your SD card as your device.
There is one annoying bug at WMP9 even WMP10 beta. sometimes, if you are lucky, your MP3 file will be converted to WMA automatically and then transferred automatically. Otherwise, it's just plain copied. This is not happen to WAV files anyway.
The only O2 related item is O2 wallpaper there, and support link. You can just delete the shortcut from the start menu, and it's gone. Much of O2 related item are third party software actually. Your SIM card functionality is hidden under Programs->SIM Tool kit.
Is there an audio recorder in the Universal for recording lectures and other stuff? Can anyone recommend a good audio recorder for the Universal please?
Resco?
The built in Notes app has record function right? But well, ofcourse it's not that powerful
it does, and you can adjust the quality of the recordings in both resco and the inbuilt notes recorder.
however, you are really going to struggle trying to save entire lectures in audio due to file size.
You will need a big storage card.

Simon,
Are you using Resco Recorder on your Universal? If YES, a few question please. An hour of lecture would probably take about how much SD Card memory? I can store it directly to my SD Card right? Can you comment on the clarity and quality of the recordings using the Universal please.
To everyone: Thank you for responding. If any of you guys & gals still have any suggestions or comments, it would be nice before I go purchase Resco for my Universal.

Have you first tried the built-in one? Maybe it will suffice?
START>PROGRAMS>NOTES
Then MENU>View Recording Toolbar
You can set in options to save to SD Card
If ti is not enough, then go for resco

When cuteangelica suggested it from notes I did not find it there, silly me, it is hidden. Looks like this will do the trick. Thanks again everyone for your patience. Saved me 20 bucks.
you can also access it by pressing and holding the voice dialler button next to the camera button.
resco is also for recording music from internet, and convets wav to mp3 and back, and also to extract or cut down wav and mp3 so you can use for ringtones.
resco can also let you reduce quality on conversion to reduce sizes.
but I use notes for simple recordings of voice.
I use NoteM, it works well, saves direct to SD card as MP3, and is free.
Cheers,
Steve
Hi,
Sorry in advance if this is already on the forum but I have been looking for ages and cant find it.
I changed the sound quality of the voice recorder to some silly low rate as I was running out of memory. I now have a 2gig mem card but cant remember or find how to change it back... I think I must have used a bit of trial software which has now run out and gone....
Any ideas?
Chears,

Dont use built in voice recorder - its rubbish. Use Notem 1.21 much better sound quality and uses much less space as it records in mp3.
Get it here http://www.pocketpcfreewares.com/en/index.php?soft=626
Thanks for the lead but I ideally just want to change the quality back to 44.1khz and on the storage card.
I tried this program and for some reason it wouldnt record... just sat there....

Sorry forgot to say - needs to be installed on main memory to work.
For standard recording format - goto settings\input\options and you can change the quality to 44.1Khz
It's amazing isn't it. i was looking for it for hours (badly obviously) and I just found it, thought I would put up here for others and you just have.
Thanks anyway Mark.

NoteM it's a really great prog!! For mp3 recording I've used the eye-candy resco's one.. But surely this beat it!! It seems integrated with the ROM's one!! and u can actually install even in the storage folder (the first time u open it it displays the playlist screen: u simply have to click close in the file menu  ) another really cool thing is that it converts from mp3 to wav, perfect to make sms tones..
A must have!!

My wife is trying to record meetings on her MDA with Notes, but after 15mins or so, the recording stops and a message saying that internal memory is low. I set it to record to the storage card, the file does save to the storage card, but I believe it's initially recording to the device and then converting to the storage card. She only has about 15Megs of available storage memory left though.
So then I downloaded NoteM (since it was so popular) and was able to make hour long recordings, but the playback kept skipping all through the recording. I couldn't find any settings that would fix that. So, was there something that we missed using NoteM and Notes? Or is there a better program to use for the Wizard (preferrably freeware)? Also, do all programs hold the file on the device before saving to the card? I never noticed this problem on my phone because I have almost 40Megs of storage space available.
I use Resco Audio Recorder all the time to record lecture's. I record straight to the storage card. I also use Cool Edit Pro to touch up the recording. I think Resco Audio Recorder peforms better than Vito Audio Notes, however if you search through Menniesyss' posts you might locate a review of similar products.

Thanx. I just down loaded a tril of the Resco Audio Recorder. It's really nice! I think I'll use it as my default recorder too.
Back in the days of WM 6.1 on my other device I had a built-in notes sound recorder application that recorded wav files. In the wm6.5 roms it no longer appears to be included.
Does anyone know of a small footprint wav similar to the old one where I can choose the bitrate?
notem
Well off hand I've got nothing for you that does wavs but maybe you'd prefer something that does what you want but in mp3 on the fly, letting you adjust the bitrate and mono/stereo. Doesn't seem to let you record straight to wav but you can convert formats back and forth after a recording. Save a lot of space with mp3...
NoteM is the name. Give it a whirl and if it's not what you had in mind say so and I'll dig for something else.

I don't know how big the footprint is has and it isn't free but VITO AudioNotes does what you want plus in addition to helping you take your voice notes you can set it on voice activated mode to stash the phone somewhere and spy on people. $7
Now you may have zero interest in this but while we're on the subject you can use your phone as a multitrack recorder with MeteOR.
Microsoft Recite may be up your alley. IIRC it lets you take your voice notes and then you can later search for your old notes using your voice. That's about all I know about it. They discontinued it but I've still got a copy for you here.
