THANKS ALOT MASTER.
IT WORKS VERY WELL.
Not working for me. Installed, no error messages, but I still can't use mp3's as ringtone. Actually in file manager mp3's are not associated with any programs. Could someone give any help?
you dont need anything to set a .mp3 as a ringtone, just place the mp3 file in the rings folder under windows and go to the tone selection screen and it will be there.
PLACE MP3 FILE IN FOLLOWING FOLDER
\\My Device\Windows\Rings
then do this
Start>Settings>Sounds & Notifications>Notifications(on bottom)
Then Event:.. scroll down to Phone: Incoming Call then tap the drop down box by ring tone and it will be there.
There should deffinately be a FAQ sticky for this kinda stuff

So it can't be done without placing the mp3 in the ringtones directory? In deed it's not working for me that way either. I can see the mp3 on the list, but after choosing and pressing an OK, it sets itself back to windows default. Actually I can't use anything else than windows default. I'm really getting mad, plz help! Where is the file associations menu? Maybe there's some problem there. This thing is messed up since I've installed and uninstalled winamp...
Work great on wm2005 1.60b
Man i dont know is if its the program or the windows itself..but under the settings of notifications all my mp3 is listed ..which i never knew!...this is GREAT!

It would appear that by default mp3 ringtones are allowed, however once you install a third party app to play mp3's (you mention winamp) you lose the ability to use them(it seems that the Media player engine is used for this).Uninstalling the app makes no difference, you then have no mp3 player because the mobile version of windows does not restore the file association. The best way round this that I have found is to simply use an audio app (Nero wave editor in my case) to convert/edit the mp3s to wma. This has the bonus that most mp3 tracks are too long for a ringtone (how many phones ring for 3-4 minutes without kicking in the answering service ?) so when you convert you can also reduce the length.
I cant comment on the set ringtone cab posted here, never tried it, it may work
HTH
I am able to install the cab file without any error message but still can't use mp3's as ringtone. The mp3 file appears in the Sound and Notification drop down list, but whenever I select the mp3 file and try to play, it doesn't play and return back to Windows Default ringtone. Can anyone tell me that what is the problem?

The same problem I have. Also I don't think so that the easiest way to solve it is to convert each of my mp3's to wma or whatever. Somehow there should be a way to restore the file associations. Maybe if someone would have a media player to install (re-install) that could solve it. The problem is that I've also lost my former ringtones.
Have a look at this thread here. Ive just downloaded the files but not tried em yet. Seems to be able to restore file associations so that WMP becomes your default player. This should then allow you to use mp3's as ringtones

GO TO START/SETTING/PERSONAL/PHONE (AND SELECT YOUR MP3 FROM THERE).
CHEERS,

So the file associations are normal again, thx to your help. But how can I set an mp3 as ringtone which is stored on the sd card other than copying it to the ringtones folder as it takes far too much space from the main memory? The settings-ringtones does not find the mp3 files either on the sd or in the system memory, only wavs and mids.
@Szilu
I'm afraid there is no other choise but to copy the mp3 ringtone to the main memory.
Im sorry
That's a pity. Anyway can you suggest any programs then to cut mp3's to smaller pieces? As 4 minutes is far too much thus the size can be shrinked. THX for your kind help.
Try "Sound Forge", But im not sure if it support mp3 files or .waqv only, their you can cut the file to small pieces.
good luck.
Hey, this is probably a really stupid question, but I just can't figure it out.
Does the MDA play real tones (ringtones), that are like cuts of mp3s with words and everything? I am asking because I've tried to download them from a few sites and they all say its not compatable once I try to download it, I've already spent a few dollars that have not turned up with nothing. I just want to make sure instead of wasting more money for this bs.
PS. If there are any good ringtone sites (preferably free) could you list them? I am looking for Ludacris and Field Mob feat. Jamie Foxx - Georgia (its been hard to find, and all the places that I find it at won't download onto my phone).
Thanx
you could just copy any WAV (44KHz, 16bit) or WMA (I believe) of sufficiently small duration to your PocketPC's \Windows\ folder and they should show up in the list of possible ring tones. No need to waste $3 on 1 10 second low-quality audio clip.
However, MP3s aren't supported as ring tones without using third party applications - which might be what you're running into with the 'realtones'.
Sometimes it's not enough just to copy them to the Windows folder, so if you tap & hold on the WAV/WMA you want to use then select "Set as Ringtone" it will copy it to the right place for you.

I have an MP3 as my ring tone. I just put it in my doc folder and select it via phone > options.
Works fine.
Quick Guide on ringtones: (and very rough)
1. Download EnglishSetMP3Ringtone from the FTP and install on your phone
2. Download Audacity and the MP3 Addon. Install on your Computer
3. Download/Rip your Favorite song to MP3
4. Use Audacity to get the bit of the song that you want (30 seconds Max)
5. Copy the New MP3 created in Audacity to your phone
6. Tap and select set as Ringtone
And there you have it.

Yep, no worries here. My mp3 works fine as a ringtone.
It is located My Device> Windows> Rings and was automatically stored there after selecting 'set as ringtone' within My Sounds folder in My Documents.

can you please link or direct us to "EnglishSetMP3Ringtone"? i got a headache searching through ftp folders and gave up
not for me but for a poor non-htc'er. my wiz plays mp3 ringtones from \windows\rings
gah, I was confusing it with the alarm ( don't tell me I'm wrong on that, too ). No idea why 'realtones' wouldn't work, then - but still, just grab whatever music you want... no need to help make a bunch of people filthy rich because of thousands of people selling 8s of crappy quality music for $3 a piece.
all mp3s work as ringtones on my mda, without any problem
got the jamie foxx tune, download it of limewire etc
I have no problems making ringtones at all. This is what I do:
1- Use Audacity to crop a Mp3, .Wav, or .Wma file to about 20 seconds or so
2- Choose "Save as Mp3"
3- Using Activesync copy your new ringtone to windows/rings folder on your device
4- select the ringtone in sounds/notifications
Too easy! Here's a thread with some if you aren't interested in making your own:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=45290
A commonly used technique is to go to Walmart.com and download all the previews they have of songs and copy them to your device. These are usually about 30sec and more often than not have the most recognizable part of a song.
Hey all
Have a look at http://www.mobile9.com a great site for
all kinds of free stuff like ringtones, wallpapers, etc...
Greetings
Mindmaster
- Find the MP3 files you want to use as ringtones and and save them to your PC.
- Get Audacity (here http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ )
- Use Audacity to crop the part of the MP3 you want to use and save it to your PC.
- Get the free trial of the MP3 to ringtone programme from here http://www.ddz1977.com/ and use it to compress the MP3 to a small file size.
- Copy the new files to your device (to the temp folder for example).
- Open file explorer on the device, go to the directory and tap and hold the the file, then select 'Set as Ringtone' which moves it to the correct location. In the settings window for Notifications you will now see all the files available as ringtones for any notification. (You can now delete the mp3 from the temp folder.)
As an aside, I used the programme to compress all my MP3 music and got 100 CDs on one 1GB mini sd card.
hello, first off im not very computer savy shall we say. i can do basic stuff and follow directions very good thoe. i just bought a htc p4300 which i believe in the wizard i really just want to figure out how make my own ring tones for now. do i need to sync the phone to my computer ? i down loaded some music to the phone already is there a way i can just use a song off my playlist as ring tone. any help would be great. thanks and again im a newbi to the smart phones so please be easy on me
well i figured out i have a g4 so ill go look in that section
custom ringtones need to be added to /my documents/my ringtones/ in main memory.
i tried to sync the song from my computer using windows media player but i couldnt get it to work. is there a way to do it right on the phone its self. again sorry for the dumb question but im just not to computer litereate compared to some of you guys out there
Yes, you should sync your phone to a computer, it will make this much easier for you.
First: get the sound file you want to use on your computer. edit it using Audacity, or convert it to WAV and use the Windows Sound Recorder, if all else escapes you. The final output should be .wma format ONLY (you might get away with using mp3, but I never did). Use the freeware program SUPER to convert files from any audio/video format to any other. For best results, convert to WMA at 16 bit stereo, 44KHz sampling rate, 96kpbs bitrate. Also, keep your ringtones under 30 seconds in length, or bad things will happen while your phone tries to play enormous ringtones and act like a two-way radio simultaneously.
I assume you still have Windows Mobile 5 on your phone (or you would have already bricked it if you tried to upgrade it), so you can download ActiveSync 4.2 to sync your phone to the computer (don't use 4.5, 4.2 is best for the Wizard with WM5, G3 or G4). This way you will be able to sync contacts, email, etc. but more importantly for this use, you'll be able to browse phone directories from your computer.
Deposit your new mp3 ringers in \Windows\Rings on your phone. Be patient navigating through the \Windows folder on your phone. There's a lot there, and it usually takes a while to open.
Then just switch your ringtone like you would any other. (I found that I needed to add a space between the end of the file name and .wma, as in "ringtone .wma" for it to work properly, your mileage may vary.)
im leary about buying this pocket player, because i downloaded for my htc hd2 and it wont play any music files or vid files, i went to to associations in settings and there not checked, and it will not allow me to check them.
is the pocketplayer compatible with the HD2?
change settings / associations
bought it 1 month ago, very happy with it, only listen to audio books not tried video (tcpmp meets my needs) in order to select an item settings/associations tap on the item you want to select, it will hilight then bring up keyboard and press enter, hope this helps. ps works perfectly on my hd2
thanks alot for your reply!! ive been wanting to try to find agood player.
i finally got the settings down now thanks to you!!
next question.. ive went to menu, options library and added my storage card\ music. then tried to play ANY files on my storage card but it wont play or add any of them? and they are all mp3??? they all added fine on windows media player on htc, and they all add fine tcpmp, and coreplayer, but they won't add in pocket player? but it has added all the os ringtones? and custom ringtones ive added to the ringtones folder on the device(not storage card) also it did find my videos. all avi's and it won't play any of them?
any other tips would be appreciated. i dont wanna buy a product that i cannot even get the trial to work!
Thanks for your time and patience!
To make "checking" work, you MUST enable virtual keyboard. Use up/down and enter keys.
BT keyboard also does the trick.
This is a common issue of WM 6.5. I have same problem with pocket player too.
still doesnt work .. this is sad for me caus eim a comp tech and consider myself VERY tech savy. so sorry guys
ive watched while its scanning folders, and it never goes to storage card? just scans... is c program files flip disc? wont goto storage card, and in pocket player settings library folder it shows i have \storage card\music and \storage card\video to monitor for files. and i DO NOT have c program files\flip disc selected.
adding files from memory card
as i said i only use it for audio books and dont use the library but i can tell you how i use it which might meet your needs (i assume "the library" allows you to select contents of a playlist via mp3 tags), i add a book via the "open folder" option this will recurse all sub
directories from the chosen folder and add them to current playlist. i then save the current
playlist via the browse->playlist option, as i said unless your music is well organized this might not suit.
i have just tried creating playlists via album and arist this worked fine all my files are on sd card. just checking are we talking about same player "conduits pocketplayer v4.1", have you tried emailing them, i found their tech support to be v efficient & helpful.
good luck, and happy to help
EDIT - my two pennies worth
works well with cheap ipod handsfree from ebay as play pause work
when device locked (important feature for me), it is currently my
audiobook player of choice beating out rockbox on old ipod, one less
gadget and playback speed adjust with constant pitch.

I've been using it (I assume you mean Conduit's version) for years now and am now using it on the HD2 with just the minor problem mentioned already (needing to use a soft keyboard to change settings).
Messing with Zoomify on it now, because I had some problems getting precise clicking on the bar where I wanted to jump ahead in a podcast.
If you're still having problems, send them an email - in the past I've found that they were very responsive to problems (same day replies).

hi guys, this is my first post, and i am haveing some issues with my tmobile usa htc hd2, first off, i just got the phone in the mail this morning, so all i know about it is what i have gathered from the internet (not that much)... so, i am haveing trouble putting movies on it. i have a bunch of mp4 movies that i use on my ipod, but the only way i have gotten one on my hd2 is to put it on the phone memory, which means one movie takes up almost all the space, so that just wont work, and i need to know how to put them on the memory card.
also, id like to know how to install co0kies home tab, i have downloaded everything i need for it, but i dont know how to get it on my hd2.
any help on either topic would be greatly appreciated.
thanks,
Pbleonidus
connect to usb, when usb to pc connection popup comes up choose active sync, then go to my computer (on pc) you will see a new device called something like 'pbleonidus's hd2', click to open that, you will see tw3o devices, one called \ and one called storage card.
Open the storage card one, and drag your files there.
Same for installing apps, drag the .cab file to the phone and then on the phone, browse to the file and click to run it.
Alternatively, when the usb to pc connection popup comes up choose disk drive, and teh storage card (and only the storage card, you cannot see teh phones internal file system unless you choose active sync as above) will show up as a removeable drive in my computer
Download ActiveSync 4.5 (xp) or Windows Mobile Device Center (vista and above) from microsoft. It's a much better way to browse your phones File directories, including the 16gig storage card, in my opinion.
This would also solve your second question regarding the CHT cab file. Drop it in whatever directory you want on your phone, (via activesync) then use the phones File Explorer to find that location, and execute.
ok, so for CHT, i just drag the cab file to the sd card file? do i put it in any folder, or just into the main sd card folder?
also, same thing with the videos, can i just put them anywhere on the the sd card or does it have to be in videos?
A handy little site for all of you...

ok, so i can just put cab files anywhere on the sd card, and browse to them, and click them from the device, and it will install things like CHT?
what if i want to go back to stock, can i just delete the file, or is there a process? and i think i got the movies to work, i just need to finish syncing a few...
By and large you can put anything anywhere you want, provided you know how to get to that location once you're browsing on the phone itself. In other words, you drop a movie in folder X, you need to know how to tell whatever player you use to open that movie from folder X.
Rule of thumb is to be clean and tidy about it, much the same way you would your pc. Personally, I drop the .cab files into My Documents, as it's easy for me to find from the File Explorer within the phone. Once you see it just tap and execute.
Once you execute a .cab file, you will be asked to install, then presented the option to install on Phone or Storage Card.
A program like CHT, or CHTEditor, or BsB Tweaks, I personally install on the phone itself. Any other Application or Game or what have you goes on the Storage Card.
If it's a program that's going to drastically change the way your phone operates (CHT), install it to the phone. Anything else on the storage card.
That's just my own conventional wisdom however. I think of it in terms of execution speed. You have to think something installed on the phone itself will run faster than something installed on the SD card.
thanks jimbonics, that helps a lot, and what if i need to go back to stock, can i just delet the cab file, or do i need to go through uninstall process (if so, how do i do that)?
also, do i need to run the programs in any secific order once they are put on the device? example: for CHT, do i need to run CHTEditor, then CHT, or doesnt it matter?
CHT first, then the editor.
For removal, simply go to Start-->Settings-->Applications-->Remove applications.
CHT is just a Sense 2.5 modification, so you aren't actually moving away from what is typically referred to as 'stock' (being a T-Mobile ROM over a cooked ROM), but I understand your meaning.
And, once you install a .cab file, you can then remove it from the phone, saving a bit of space.
You may want to archive it on your pc however, in case you ever need to do a hard reset. You'll find it'll help get your phone back to where it was much faster if you save all the cabs you install on your pc.
also, for the fixes that i downloaded, like a swype fix, opera mobile fixe, and something else, do i do the same thing as i would for the cht files, just put them on the sd card, navigate to them, and run them?
If they are .cab files, yes.
ok, i think i have everything i need, if there is anything you think i should know, im all ears. if i need anything else ill ask. and i appreciate the help so far.

This thread will probably give you a lot of useful info as a new HD2 owner:

And then this one too:

i havnt tried any .cab files yet, i need to get the other issues sorted out first.
im still haaving troubles with movies, i have about 30 mp4 movies and only about 5 of them are working on my hd2? whats up with that? when i click on the other movie files, it shows a black screen with a loading symbole for like a half second, then goes back to to the movies list. on the ones that do work, it shows that screen, but for like 1-2 seconds, then starts playing the movie... i really need to get these problems fixed, because, although i love the phones big screen and awsome camera, im not to impressed with much else, i dont want to have to sell the phone, after only owning it for a day...
mp4 isnt a filetype in its own right, it is just a container filetype (same with .avi files).
Inside it is a video file and an audio file. When you open the mp4, it uses a splitter to divide it into audio and video streams, and then codecs are used to decode the two streams.
The problem is these can be encoded with one of dozens(hundreds?) of different codecs, meaning two mp4 files can have completely different format video/audio inside them.
THis may not be the problem, but i would hunt down some kind of codec info prog (i use 'gspot' for avi files, dunno if it will work for mp4s, i dont have any) which will tell you what codecs the vid and audio streams are encoded in. You can then compare that to the supported codecs on the hd2, and take it from there.

i also have the files in .avi format, so what do i do with this 'gspot'?
(and last night i have been installing a bunch of .cab files, i have CHT, CHTEditor, BSB tweeks, and a bunch of other tweeks! they work flawlesly! YAY!)
also, would the fact that i dont have the factory sd card make a differance here?
when i got my phone off ebay, the guy sent me a 2GB sd card, so i had to use the 16GB card out of my old phone....
also, how do you get to the registry to make tweaks? do i need internet to do it? because i cant get any on my phone...
and also, what is the today tab, and how do you turn off htc sense on it?
