Does anybody know how to remove these unwanted virtual buttons?
Amen to that, ive got one extra and two 4's lol
Strange even though I have buttons 2,3,4,4 they all work perfectly :?
Go to \hklm\software\microsoft\shell\keys
and clean out any spares.
I advise making a backup before and after, because reconstructing this data can be a pain in the bum. Frankly, export and backup your whole registry while you're there.

I've just tried to unhide my extended rom with help of 2 registry keys. now my device does not boot up. It stays on white blank screen.
What can I do ? (other than hard reset ?)
Is there a way to boot up without reading registry keys ?
is there a way to edit the registry of a not booted device ?
or any way to open device without reading registry ?
Well, I'm only a newbie myself, so I don't know if this will help. I unhid my own extrom yesterday with reg tweaks. There we more than two changes to make, mind you, including the addition of a dword value that didn't exist on my 8525. You don't offer what type of device you are using, so that might limit how much help you get here, btw.
Anyway, have you tried soft resetting by using the stylus in the hole at the bottom of the device? That MIGHT do something different and let you get into the system.
There is a safe mode that some 3rd party offers ... I think SPB PocketPlus...but that won't help if it's not already installed, and I'm not sure it would help in your circumstance.
Anyway...good luck. I hope this, or someone else's advice can help you.

Btw, I of course tried to soft reset with the stylus.

What you didn't have a comprehensive back up!! Oh dear dear dear. That's a hard lesson I learned a while back. Now I could happily hard reset right now and be fully back up and running in say 10 minutes with SPB backup. A lesson for all.
Mike
in fact I am using SK tools for backup. but my backup was too old.
This is a new device and I installed a lot of software lately.
Well, look on the bright side, you have cleared out all the 'stuff' that builds up on a system after a lot of installing and uninstalling, and you're sure to build it better this time. It's just irritating that this kind of thing usually happens when you have no time.

I need a little help.
After a crash I hardresetted my Hermes and then used SK Tools to return to a backup point. But now when I try to activesync I get a message on my PC saying that the mobile device has already synced with another PC and it requests a new name for this PC.
I haven't synced with another PC. What shoukd I do ?
Hi guys..
I just got my first ever smart phone, Touch Dual, and I wish to look into it, so I have a few questions.
Since I would like to edit registry settings, edit the cube etc. I would like to know what I should be aware of? What software would come to my aid if something fail and I need to restore the phone?
And which application could you recommend for edit registry, and other settings?
Sorry for these newbie questions, but as soon as I get these things up and running, I would do anything to contribute to this forum.
Sprite backup is the way to go for..backups, 10 day trial period if memory serves, you can restore forever;
To edit the registry, you can use the regedit module of Resco Explorer.
if your worried that anything you do might completely kill your phone then dont worry... apart from flashing a new and it going wrong, a hard reset of the phone will factory reset it and fix most problems
my touch dual is shipped with sprite backup (on a software cd). maybe you can also check whether any other useful utils available on yours.
Thanks for the replies..
My phone was shipped with the backup software, just installed it - seems to work like a charm, except it couldn't save some Messenger Live files, but they didn't seem important anyway.
Anyone other recommendations?

yeah..its so cool that they give a registered copy & not a trail for the sprite backup...its a life saver for us folks who flash & tweak a lot!
(btw...the sprite backup is a HTC version....whatever that means)
I think thats because you can only use it on a htc device?
Well, my Touch's screen alignment has gotten so bad that I need warranty repair. Of course, it happened 2 months after I got it, and Sprint will only do a exchange within the first 30 days. I did not get the insurance because I am covered for "all risk" on my homeowners insurance (also, I got the stupid insurance, at $7.50 per month, with the last phone and they only gave me a "refurbished" unit).
Anyway, can the Touch be disc imaged/restored just like a PC and what is the best solution ?

Sounds like you're referring to a hard reset. This will clear everything on your windows mobile device and restore it to factory default settings.
Warning make sure to back up anything you want to save because this will clear EVERYTHING on the phone.
if you can get into the settings menu under the system tab select Clear Storage and follow the instructions there. If not then hold both the Call and End Call buttons (green and red) then hit the reset button with your stylus under the touch next to the usb port (this is kinda tricky to do). Your screen will go off for a sec then you'll see a white screen with hard reset instructions. At this time you can let go of the Call and End Call buttons and then press the Center/Action button to hard reset or the Camera button to cancel.
If your only issue is the misaligned screen then it sounds like a hardware problem and this probably won't help but it's worth a shot.
Good Luck

You misunderstood - I know all about a "hard reset" and that is NOT what I am looking for !!
HTC tech support basically said that a hard reset will not fix this. One way or another, I will probably have to send it in to HTC for repair - I already talked to them. The HTC repair depot is in Long Island and the whole process takes 2 to 3 weeks complete turn-around.
Is there a way to disc image EVERYTHING just like cloning a PC ??

OK i get it now. You're just looking for a backup software. There are tons out there, Spb Backup is probably one of the most popular
Thanks guys, like most I have added software programs, have a call history, contacts, etc.
Will either of these essentially "clone" my entire Touch or are these primarily "file backup" utilities.
I will find them and read the blurbs ... but do you know from personal experience ??
This sure looks like what I am looking for - just I don't need 20 licenses.

I have learned that "backup" and "clone" are different - I need clone but maybe in the WM6 world backup will completely restore to a new device.
SPB Backup is definitely the best. As long as you use the same ROM when you get it back (if you never flashed you'll be fine) you can just run the exe it makes and you won't even know the difference. Restores contacts, calendar, software, reg keys, the whole works. Just like a disc image.

What would you use "if" you flashed the ROM - I have not yet.
Thanks for the input - I am currently leaning toward this app which makes the "cloning" software. I emailed their tech people asking about the functionality and am awaiting a reply.
Anyone with Sprite Backup experiences ?

You would use either that or nothing Ive upgraded ROMs and run a restore sucessfully before, but its a your mileage may very situation
I am DLing Sprite Backup eval and found this, so I will share - it shows a comparison with SPB (obviously biased, but the screenshots are great)

If ur still lookin, SPB clone is a good one. It' s use to clone company phones so they don't have to install every software and settings on each phones they use. I tried it and it restore everything on my phone. Call logs, sms, settings etc. I cloned my phone for buckup reasons. I accidently clear my storage. I did a hard reset. retore the clone and everything is back. It will clone just the phone memory and storage though. It will not clone your storage card. U can easily copy paste the card contents anyways.

I just evaluated this yesterday. Here is what I had problems with:
1. I learned they have a setting to wipe existing data on restore...I only did a one directory restore. Had to hard reset, then restore again.
2. It won't do your Messages. They have a seperate app for that SpriteArchie for $14.99. I use pimbackup after setting up my e-mail accounts.
I think an app like this should restore your e-mail settings and e-mail. I dumped it.
SPB Backup is great - does a complete backup/restore of your phone including the registry and all system/user files.
The problem with restoring after a flash/rom update, is that every version of the O/S will have version specific registry entries and system files that will be overwritten upon backup.
So if you're swapping out your phone for one with the same version of the rom, Spb is "the cat's meow" whereas the only reliable solution after a rom update, is to manually reinstall all of your apps/settings...

I'm also wanting to clone my rom. I have a Bell phone and like the way it's setup. I would like to save the my original rom and experiment with new ones, especially when/if the gps and video drivers are released.
This problem started yesterday.
All of a sudden i cannot access my settings at all.
I need to to a hard reset but when i go to the start menu and click settings, nothing.
i've tried leaving the battery out but i don't know how long the back up battery lasts.
Is there any other way to do a hard reset?

i'll let him off then,
Its sorted now anyway, i have the omnia
and if anyone wants to know how to hard reset then here ya go:
1. turn the phone off.
2. hold the power/call/end buttons for about 5 secs.
3. you will be asked if you want to format, this will only format the phone memory not 'my storage' or 'storage card'.
4. press the call button to format and hey presto working omnia again.
Why didn't you just soft reset............
is is so easy to say: "make hard reset"....
----
control panel registry branch may be deleted(then i cannot help you), or you just missing empty directory in /windows/start menu/ - look there, if it is missing, make it(just empty dir named "settings") there and make softreset....
if still problem persists, try to copy any shortcut(lnk) to that /windows/start menu/settings dir, make softreset and look, if that icon in menu start is there..
there may be other possibilities, but...it is late and i need to get some sleep now..
in future, try use ppcpimbackup to make..... whole PIM backup(sms, mms, mail, calls, etc), just in case you need hard reset(you cannot make full backup with i.e. spb backup, if system is damaged, it may be nonsense - ppcpimbackup will just make databases backup, so in case of reset it won't be such pain as loss of everything..)
btw, it is wrong forum section, imho...
Hi guys,
I wanted to give cooking a try and was wondering what the easiest approach for me would be.
My goal is to use the official ROM as a basis and
a) remove an app such as CoPilot
b) add an app such as Pigeon
What tools etc. would I need?
Thanks for any hints
remove/add prgs is no ROM-cooking, it´s removing and adding apps .........
So then tell me, how can I remove CoPilot?
Anyway, the two points were starters...
I'm sure I will do more modifications later on.
Search for 'kitchen' and you'll get more info on it

Move Copilot-prog to SD-card with Resco-Expl. and then uninstall it, Afterwards make a reg clean-up with reg cleaner (a little bit crude though but worked nicely for me )

If you do that there are still files in the ROM you can't get rid of. Plus a duplicate of what you just deleted, don't forget the files that are in Program files after a hard reset must come from somewhere
Complete removal can only be done by cooking, and it saves quite a bit of space indeed.
