Would someone suggest the best way to add WiFi compatibility to my XDA2?
Where can one obtain XDA2 accessories?
Regards
Nick
I use the WiFi SD-Card from SanDisk personally.
It works great, has a good connection stability and comes rather cheap wehn you compare it to the competition.
One caveat, however, the WiFi drains batteries very fast -90 minutes is the max.

I am using:-
"i-mate (ModelPH10B)" aka XDA II
Running Windows Mobile Pocket PC Phone edition (pre-installed)
ROM version 1.03.00 USA dated 09/24/03
Radio version 1.05.12
Protocol version 1337.12
I purchased the SDIO Wi-Fi card by SanDisk ("Connect Low Power Wi-Fi Card" - SDWSDB-000). I cannot seem to be able to install the driver on the handheld. The PC installation proceeds fine but the PDA screen freezes as it is installing. I have tried both versions provided in the companion CD (which are for PPC2002 and 2003). There is another version on SanDisk's site and it has the same problem.
It seems the Windows Mobile PPC Phone Edition needs its own driver. Any ideas? Which driver are you using? BTW, what did you pay for the card?
Thanks
SDIO Wi-Fi card by SanDisk - Drivers for XDA II?
The newest driver I can find on SanDisk's site is at http://www.sandisk.com/consumer/sdwifi.asp
and is called "Pocket PC 2003 V60 (new Oct. 10, 2003)"
It still hangs on my i-mate and the 'installing' screen on the PDA never progresses.
Any advice is welcome..
re
sorry, no advice but I have managed to get the sandisk wifi card working on my xda. I had no probs loading the necessary software.
Selected Quick instal on the start up screen then Pocket PC 2003, ensured my xda 2 was connected via cradle and active sync, then selected install the wifi utility.
Installed on the xda with no probs at all.
needed to change the device name afterwards.
Also have installed this http://www.pocketgear.com/software_detail.asp?id=2825&associateid=148 and it's working great. Internet through my broadband connection at home and access to my mp3 collection anywhere in the house, well struggle upstairs tbh but I may need to move me router.
Not what you want to here but at least you know in can work.
Cheers, Shire.
PS XDA 2 just ges better and better.

Thanks. Is your XDA II running 'Windows Mobile Phone Edition' or 'PPC 2003' ? Which version?
I noticed that some of the posts on XDA developers that PPC2003 is the pre installed version on sets sold in Germany.

re
ummm well to be honest I'm not absolutely sure ?
Under /settings/about
Microsoft Pocket PC
Version 4.20.1081 (build 13100)
Proc: Intel(R) PXA263
Memory: 126.03 MB
Under /settings/device info
Version
ROM: 1.03.00 USA
ROM date: 09/24/03
Radio: 1.05.12
Protocol: 1337.12
In identity the model is PH10B
Not sure if any of that helps.
I have yet to confirm whether my device uses Pocket PC 2003 which is suggested under settings, or whether it is Windows Mobile PC 2003 which is suggested in some paperwork I have.
Hence I am confused

All what you list matches what is there on my machine. Maybe there is a particular hardware or software problem with my particular machine. I will try a hard reset I guess.
What size is the setup.exe file that u used to install the drivers for PPC2003?
1,602,674 or 1,408,504 ?
Thanks for your help.
re
umm again not sure to be honest.
I simply ran the Sandisk Installation CD version 1.0 (a mini CD Rom).
The rest was as I described above, following the on screen instructions.
The only other suggestion I can make is that I have removed the O2Active app from start up.
Lastly, I have had a quick look on the cd rom and I do not see any files of that size.
There is a setup.exe in the English Folder on the disc and that is 1,376kb, but I didn't run from there, auto run took me to a front screen where I simply selected the english version for Express Install.
Cheers, Shire
Thanks for the replies so far.
I will consider the SanDisk SD WiFi Card.
Would someone advise where I can obtain this in the UK?
Additionally, is it likely that O2 are going to release something similar?
I notice a connection under the battery cover - any ideas what this is for?
I would very much like to add WiFi capability without an antenna protruding.
Aditionally, does anyone know if O2 are to release any other exciting accessories?
I got my XDA2 the other week and am very happy with it! Running it with a Jabra BT200 headset. Looking forward to the XDA3

google knew
think there is comming a backpack but i'm not 100% sure
"Additionally, is it likely that O2 are going to release something similar?"
unless it's a backpack making it specialy for the xda2 it would most likely be a rebadget other product and such are often more expensive
if it's directly from HTC you cant buy it from any other source then the phone companys which a backpack would most likely be
Finally got SanDisk Wi-Fi SDIO card to work..
Finally got the driver for SanDisk Wi-Fi SDIO card to install!
It took many hard resets and various combos (Imaginet software at startup; bypass it; 'Arabizer' on; 'Arabizer' off).
Dont know what finally mattered but in case someone needs this info in the future, here is what the situation was when it worked:-
..Install on 'storage' rather than default location on device
..Guest partnership
..All pre-installed options selected (Imaginet package/Arabizer) - this is probably applicable to sets sold in Dubai only
..No other programs installed or synchronization done before this
..Even so, the installer on the i-mate froze while copying files but the program appeared in the list of installed items after forced shutdown of the SanDisk installation after a few minutes of waiting.
At any rate, seems to recognize the card and picks up wireless signal and pings etc. Havent had a chance to fully check it out with web browsing.
I was able to get the Sandisk SDIO Wi-Fi driver to install on my T-Mobile Pocket PC Phone Edition, running the .21 build of the PPC2003 T-Mobile Rom, but it won't recognize the card when installed. I did see that the PPC Phone Edition is not on the list of supported devices from Sandisk, but for some reason I thought it would work anyway. Anybody know if that's the case?
Thanks
For what its worth I ended up downloading drivers for the Socket version. (Socket & Sandisk cards are identical). The Sandisk drivers would install on my XDA II, but the device would not pick up an ip address from my DHCP server. When an ip address was entered manually I couldn't ping anything on the LAN. Installed socket drivers from their website (http://www.socketcom.com) I think and it all burst into life. Used it for a couple of weeks now no probs. Am posting this from the XDA II using the wifi card - cool!
Thanks for the info but just tried that on my T-Mobile PPC Phone and the Socket driver doesn't recognize the Sandisk card. Guess it's eBay for me!
;-)
Just an update
SanDisk WiFi SD working fine now on the imate. Browsing, ping and all.
re
glad to hear u got it sorted faisal, although you appeared to have some difficulty there, but worth while i think

Hi guys,
ever since my provider changed the stock Chinese ROM to an English ROM my Wizard's WiFi is dead. Unfortunately the provider is not willing to help but refer me to HTC.
Anyway, it seems I am sharing this problem with a significant amount of Hermes users. Luckily for the Hermes users, Drummer presented a solution:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=322225
My question would be twofold:
1. any other Wizard user having same problem with a dead WiFi?
2. any chance to adapt the solution given for the Hermes to Wizard (and how)?
Basically I understand what needs to be done (i.e. to "repair" a corrupted MAC address), but how can I identify the right location of the MAC address in the Wizard?
Cheers!
Interesting ... so none of the current "active" Wizard users on this forum faces this problem except for me (... and 3 other colleagues of mine).
Hmmm....
I read that and it's above my skillset at the moment. I have the same problem but am not entirely sure it is due to this.
Mine will work sporadically for a while then quit.
Almost as if it's a hardware issue and if I take the battery away long enough, it will work for a while then quit.
But I'm baffled as well because when it works, it works well.
Ipaqkiller,
thanks for the reply. In my case I did not get the WIFI up and running at all ever.
It seems it is not worth the effort with the "repairing" of the MAC address if so few have this problem (my colleagues don't bother about the missing WIFI as they just use the WIZARD as a ordinary mobile).
Best shot is to convince HTC to restore the EEPROM data (as my provider rejects to help) ...
Any ideas?
I received a new HTC Touch from my Chinese carrier - guess what's the problem with it .... yes, also no WLAN feature, even the comm manager does not offer the button for WLAN ...
I learnt from a mobile shop that normally my Chinese carrier deactivates/ does not offer any mobile with WLAN ... so my problem seems not a bad ROM update corrupting the MAC address but rather a business model of my carrier .. don't know though whether it is based on software settings or that there is even a hardware component missing ...
(1) Can anyone confirm that they have same experience with their Chinese carrier de-activating the WLAN feature in the mobiles?
(2) How can I tell whether the WLAN module (hardware) is there (without phisically opening the Wizard) and could be re-activated via software?
(As said, I already uploaded the Wizard with different ROMs (incl. changes of IPL/SPL, radio rom etc.) but never got WLAN working ..
wlan prob
my wizard also is havin prob like this..
my wizard searches the wlan but didnt connect it..
it says connecting....then suddenly it stops...and gives error not available..what kind of problem is that..
plz tell me what should i do?
if this post is in the wrong place, let me know where it should be, or move it for me and notify me... thanks and sorry if posted in the wrong place...
I tried using the howto to run the OPIE-II linux distro, and it starts up just fine, looks great and very promising... BUT...
I cannot make a phone call. The message 'no modem' keeps appearing, and won't go away.
I noticed some settings panel, mentioning the modem selection, where I could select the serial /dev/ttyS0 at 115200bps, a SIM:local and SIM;hostpc (correct me if I'm wrong), but none of them seem to resolve the issue.
Now I'm having an issue in WM2003SE too with the reception and service of this device (MDA compact version), not making calls and telling me there is "no service", although my other HTC cell (trinity) next to it does it all, full coverage...
My questions are:
- what device or location do I need to point the modem to? /dev/...?) and at what speed if necessary..
- how can I troubleshoot this issue?
- how can I connect onto the dropbear ssh server (address, port, user, pass, ... to get into the phone)
Any ideas are welcome!
Thanks for the help...
Where you download "Opie-II xanadux" and how run on magician ?
Hi

I'm not sure, but I had similar issues on a Universal device...
The trick was to pin-disable the sim card from WM5/6...
go to the security settings in Windows Mobile, where you can set another pin, and disable it there...
I know it's not secure! but it's a possible solution for this issue...
I know the Universal (Qtek 9000 and similar devices) has an issue with the sim-unlock-pin stuff, and it might be the same on Magician.
Correct me if I'm wrong.
I'm not able to confirm on mine, as the radio reception is dead on my Magician system, still waiting for a quote from a UK-based repair shop... or another phone to be bought...
If anyone knows a good repair shop for HTC phones, pref'ly in the BeNeLux area, or around, please let me know!
Thanks, and good luck
Once my phone has reception again I'm restarting imaging and testing on my device...
1 - Try to install OpenMoko - all work. Sound,GSM,Blootuth.
2 -Peopls who coddding OPIE, say :"The GSM is working on the Qtopia image (kernel), the fact is that the Phone application does not know how to handle it."
I have tried the opieII image and it is really nice!!! everything works quite quick and smooth, and i love the keyboard
I get the same error with the modem problem. i would use it as an everyday device with the linux image i was that impressed with it
I got the image from here http://www.linuxtogo.org/~htcpxa/htcmagician/
I tried the openmoko image from that site but i get errors in the image when i try to boot it.
I managed to install the openmoko image from this site http://grigio.org/howto_openmoko_htc_magician_s100_dual_boot_wince and while it did boot ok, it too had no gsm capability and i found it slow and hard to use. The image on there does seem to be nearly 12 months old and so there could be something so much better out there.
Anyone know where there are any newer images for the magician?? i know the openmoko project is still going full steam, but im guessing that it takes a bit of work to get the latest version of that onto a magician (adding in specific drivers etc)
anyone with information or needing help (i will try) can email me or msn me on [email protected]

hi guys im playing around with a tmobile(uk) mda vario 1 i bought today 2nd hand and am trying to set it up to acess the internet via wifi.ive just plugged in a wireless router(free from virgin) and is working fine with my daughters laptop and sony psp. but i dont know how to set up this phone ie what do i type in and where? also i dont know what the ip addy is where i am.
can anyone please help a newbie please.
Turn on the Wi-Fit, then it should automatically scan. After that, click your router, and enter your security key.
By the way, 3 tips for the future:
1) Don't call a thread "newbie help needed" or any sort of thing like that, it usually gets ignored, or flamed. A better title for this problem would be "how do I connect my Vario to my Wireless Network?"
2) search for the answer, has been asnwered many many times before, and I know that without searching myself.
3) post it in the relevant forum. Although "Networking" may seem relevant to you, there is a forum called Wizard general, which is for questions like this about the T-Mobile Vario.
And, just so you know, your device has the codename "Wizard" so the Wizard forums is where you should be READING right now.
Rory
hi thanks for the quick reply and i will take them points onboard next time i start a thread.
ive turned the router & modem on then turned my wifi on which then does pick up it.ive entered the sec key and stuff and all is fine but if i click on internet exp non of the web pages i type in load up?
Hi All
I'm looking for some help please!
I have fitted a Chinese Android Head Unit to my car. I have a 4G/Wi-Fi modem into which I have fitted an O2 Pay-as-You-Go SIM Card. The SIM card connects to the HU by USB, but rather oddly the modem uses Wi-Fi to connect to the Head Unit (for some reason not using the faster and more reliable USB, but that's not the question).
So, I can connect to the Internet and use up the time on the SIM card - that's all OK, but, O2 will only top up the card or tell me the outstanding credit if I answer a text message that they send to the SIM card - which of course has no idea what to do with a text as it isn't in a mobile phone. Their security question is "what is your most dialled number ?" - but I don't ever dial out. So I have to top up blind by going to the O2 shop and handing over cash!
The 4G/Wi-Fi modem is now in the cars roof column so not easy to get at!
Do you have any suggestions as to how I can top-up? My ideas were:
a) Find an app that turns the Head Unit into a mobile phone that can receive and make texts
b) I know that the 4G/Wi-Fi modems you plug into laptops come with software that allow the provider to connect directly (without texts). Is there one of these for Android?
Hopefully I am just not looking in the right places - I don't want any solution to involve my mobile phone as the idea is that my car can support me if I lose my phone.
Cheers
James
Well.. I just googled "02 sim top up"
seems like auto-top up is a thing. and it seems that you can install a "my o2" app, on the headunit or phone, and see the balance on there..
maybe have to put the sim in another device to get a text to link it to a account or something.
Hi pafo42
That was easy - thanks, I'll give it a try.
I did go on line to O2 and consulted two of their 'Gurus' on different occasions. Suffice it to say they were completely useless. Well I'm assuming that they are Gurus in the sense of an authorititve teacher, but I guess they are Gurus in the sense of being Hindu Spiritual Leaders and so have no particular knowledge of Mobiles and Android, etc.
It will be interesting to see if my Head Unit comes up with the same display as a phone - not sure about the fingerprint part either but it is an avenue to explore.
I also searched Google play for an app but I guess I failed there!
Cheers
James
