What is the best web browser for pocket pc 2003 ?

- PIE is still the most compatible one I'm afraid.
- Opera Mini doesn't do https & downloads, but is a much faster browsing experience.
- Opera just isn't it in my opinion.
- Minimo (Mini Mozilla) is still beta & has quit some issues.
- Thunderhawk has some flaws & is competing for the first place with PIE. It would be my favorite if the attachments to eg this forum worked flawless (PIE doesn't attach at all)
M

Try the new OPERA 8.5 for pocket PC ( not opera mini).
for me it is the best 8)

Must be something on my device, but Opera 8.5 keeps crashing on this board. So for me, & I hate to say it, it's just not good enough :-(

I don't have any Problems with ftxBrowser...works great for me.
(But i'm using the "Online-Option" not really often...)
And with configured Buttons browsing in real Fullscreen rocks.

Still have to assign buttons ;-) Noticed that logging in with https sites is giving me problems. It opens the same url in a new window :-(
PIE gives on the same sites other errors, so nothing is lost in functions

Web Browsers

Just wondering what people are using to browse the web (other than the default browser) ?
I've tried Opera Mobile but it seems to play around with some of the text on the input area and screen (odd).
hi, had the same problem with opera. browsing seems fine in terms of speed but the language is distorted. i read the support page of opera, though it supports windows mobile 5.0 they said if you can't find your mobile phone in the support list then it's not compatible. they're suggesting opera mini instead but i haven't tried it yet.
currently im using netfront v3.3 which is so far the most stable for my atom. and browsing is so fast unlike PIE (sucks!). you should try mini-mozilla too.
for opera got funny character in input text. just copy the font arial.ttf from your pc window to atom /windows directory. and soft reset.
What do you know ... copying the font over work .... thanks Mazam.
Just out of interest, how does Opera compare to the others (Netfront etc.), are there really any major differences ?
No, don't use Opera. It's writen in Java and have good support for smartphone. Too bad. It's not really for PDA.
You can try Minimo - Firefox for PPC. Here: http://www.mozilla.org/projects/minimo/
One of the Minimo's good side is it show web pages with java script perfectly. Unlike Opera. Maybe Minimo load slower Opera little bit but it good enough for me.

what do you mean opera is java platform.. that is opera mini, what i'm using is opera for mobiles...
u can go here http://www.opera.com/products/mobile/products/winmobileppc/
Opera mini 8.5 is bar none the best browser, especially when used with the 'fit to screen' option. After using it, netfront, pie, and all the others feel 'broken'.

Best Browser?

Which is the best internet browser in your opinion? Obviously IE sucks. Opera is good but not free..
I think IE is pretty good with PIEplus.
Opera made it impossible to bring my TyTN back from standby and I couldn't scroll up/down using the scrollwheel on my bluetooth mouse, so that (crappy) program had to go...
Try Opera Mini. It is free and I find it great.
Can't be answered in one word. If you can put up with the (comparatively) weak rendering / JavaScript engine of PIE, then, PIEPlus 2.1+. Otherwise, Opera Mobile 8.6.
Please do check out my articles on Web browsers ( http://www.pocketpcmag.com/blogs/index.php?blog=3&cat=61 ): you'll find EVERYTHING you need there.
I'm using NetFront as my default browser. It's superb!!!
Just try it out and find out yourself. Cheers!
thnx guys. I am not sure though if any of these browsers play flash etc. Anyways I'll try and see

Wait, how did Opera make the TyTN impossible to bring out of standby? The only thing I don't like about Opera is that the back button is so small! And I have to pull out the stylus to go back; unless I'm retarded and there is a way.

You can also use the TyTN's thumbboard to control this - I've also elaborated on how this should be configured in the Opera .ini files. (Unfortunately, no hardware buttons yet - hope they implement this some time.)
I prefer using IE and Opera. I have tried Netfront few times, but it just doesn't work. Just exits itself upon start up, so no idea how Netfront even looks alike.
I've noticed that some pages works better with IE and others with Opera, so that's why I use two different browsers. However, there are few pages where neither of my browsers work.

You don't lose much - the Opera Mobile + PIE + PIEPlus 2.2 + Macromedia Flash + Creme JVM is a much better combo.

Could you please provide some URL's? I'll file in a bug report for Microsoft after some research.
I find PIE and PIEPlus 2.2 to be the best lightweight, overall combination that enables tabbed browsing.
I also tried the tabbed browser feature from PocketPlus, which I personally didn't care for (I like being able to see the "tabs").
I've found NetFront to be a bit too resource intensive, but I give the gang from Japan an "A for effort" on a full-featured app!
I use PIE and MultiIE at the moment. Not a bad combo, but won't render certain websites properly - in particular some website discussion forums.
I've tried Opera and recently Netfront 3.3. Opera is a bit poor and resource intensive, and Netfront was just unusable for me - very slow to download websites, if at all. Might give PIEPlus 2.2 a go tonight.

Yup, PIEPlus 2.2 is certainly worth it - it's better than the current version of MultiIE. See http://www.pocketpcmag.com/blogs/index.php?blog=3&p=1170&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1 for a complete comparison & review.

Are you using it with the built-in Intent Midlet Manager or with J9 6.1? In both cases, just answer Yes once and it won't ask any more.
Anyone know if any of these browser options mentioned support left-handed scrolling bar?
Also, on a different note, i am using regular PIE, i have had trouble logging in to some sites, anad then staying logged in. Ex: Howard forums i keep logging in and it keeps telling me i am not logged in. I'd written a message three times before i gave up in frustration!

The fastest and lightest i-net browser for Artemis?

Hi folks!
I've been trying for days many different i-net browsers on my Artemis (WM6, ROM Artemis touch 3.01 WWE), but the results are as follow:
- the 'implanted' IE - sucks, toooo slow;
- the newest Opera 8.65 - slow and after 3 minutes of workin it 'swallows' 12(!) mb of program memory from 20 goes to 8mb!
- Opera mini trough Emertec simulator - so-so, but doesn't have many functions...
My question - your 'best' browser?
My request - give me advice what i supose to do?
Many thanks from one noob...
U might try netfront, skyfire. Not many choices left.
?
I've just tried Netfront - When it' startting, it says "Can't save the file"?!? The "Cant't open the file" Then, when it trying to open a site, it's popping a "java script not running" or something like that massage...
And?
Skyfire working with this win version?
i personally use Opera Mini, its by far the quickest, it just lacks Java and Flash support...
Opera 8.5 only sucks 8-10mb of memory on my device. Even with multiple tabs opened..

I've been using it for the last few days and I love it too.
I haven't even bothered to try opera. I hope they will release a final version when the beta ends.
btw what build is this? I've been using buid 519.
Indeed better than Opera 9.5
Just out of interest, how is it better than Opera 9.5?
Surur
yeah! the rendering is so much much much better than the Opera 9.5. i wil stick to NetFront here on!
only down point is, this cant be used on a 64mb ram (~18mb actually available) touch or similar. this soft needs something more like a 128mb ram equipped one.
guess its off to ppc store for me
I LOVEE IT!! its better dan 9.5 ....seems like 9.5 had made my ppc unstable...with every rom i tried...
It's very well built. a bit slower than opera's loading time... but the graphics is good.. and the zooming is very comfortable thanks to the background viewing..
i will be using it as well
its ok but i prefer to see the FULL page when a site first loads up then be able to zoom in on th eportion i want (like opera mobile and min), if it cant do that its hard to for me to even give it more of a chnce , i hate having to blindly scroll alllll the way to the bottom of a huge page
i love its bookmarks though
edit::: ohhhhhhh, nvm ive found what im looking for lol, ill have to keep messing around with it before i judge again, seems really nice so far, no eye candy=faster/easier browsing . but im kinda upset it has to reload pages when you press back
Can someone post the cab here? Is there a changelog, or does anyone know the differences between this build/version from build 519.

Can you set it to load in full page zoomed out mode? Also having the zoomed view not filling the whole screen seems silly.
Also Opera 9.5 renders the Acid 2 test perfectly, and Netfront really messes it up.

Will do

the rendering and large choice of options is making it a really really good browser.

he he he, seems after years of ****ing PIE we have now two good browsers for wm, why not !
what i really like at opera ist this automaticly fullscreen/buttons hide after some seconds.
But both needs strong ppcs and much memory as i can see.
I like it too. Opera 9.5 is not stable for my HTC Mogul.
I'm trying..
It looks very good

Good looking out for the mirrors guys. Now on to diamond version 3, lol.
I downloaded it, I installed it, and tried it, I tried to like it...but...the scrolling around in that constant zoomed in state drives me crazy. The menu that pops up when hold your finger on the screen is a little too eager to come up, that makes the scrolling around even harder.
The nail in the coffin and the reason why I got rid of it after a little while is that it couldn't even load a PPC Geeks forum page without giving me an out of memory error. This was on a Sprint touch with nothing but Netfront running.
I like Skyfire better, no doubt!

Anyone using Opera Mini ?

I've just installed Opera Mini on my Jade and I have to say, it's pretty nice.
Unlike Opera Mobile it is very fast and the zooming and display is better for a small screen like the 320x240 Jade screen.
Since the websites and images will be compressed by the Opera servers, the traffic is lower and the speed higher. Of course, I won't use the browser for sensible data, because the data runs through Opera proxies. But for normal browsing it's great.
The only problem: I can't switch to fullscreen, because the fullscreen can only be enabled by a key combination which I don't have on my Jade. Maybe someone knows how to fix this.
But it's still a nice browser.
Yes agree, I must say the speed is pretty impressive compared with the Op Mob even by setting graphics to high. btw is is there any method to launch it direct without launching jBlend first ? Am I missing something ? Cheers.
Here is a very useful overview of the features the most popular JVMs have.
As for the direct shortcut, my jade came with esmertec jbed, here is a description how to invoke opera mini (or any other midlet) directly from windows.
The problem is there's no description how to do that with jblend (why don't you use the preinstalled jbed, anyway?)
Mine is pre installed with JBlend. I've found the direct shortcut command i.e. \Windows\JBlend_AMS.exe -R 0.jar (0 is where your Opera Mini is in \windows\java, depending on your other installations.)
Thanks.
azahidi, would you highly recommend using opera mini or the stock opera browser?
Hi !
Yes Opera Mini is Very Fast ! That Good but i have the solution for your problem !
When you are on Opera Mini go to :
Setting => Full screen
that very simple but i don't know if you want that or an other "full screen"

For me the same: I find it important that the browser is fully integrated in the operating system (Windows mobile). Opera mini as a java-applet only has limited connections to the other functions of the phone (example: direct dial of telephone-numbers listed on web pages).

There is only a java version now, no PPC version. I don't like java programs.
